  • 1999 - Lucca and Robo destroy the Vision Serpent, a prototype Dragon God. They can't go back in time since the portal too was destroyed, but this cripples the Reptites, allowing the robots to rule. Lucca and Robo seemingly enjoy living with the robots, and hope to develop a way back in time.
  • 1002 - Crono, Magus, and Glenn arrive in a forest. They head up a little and find a village (all one map) and Terra Tower, where a traveler blocks the entrance but is cordial.
  • 1002 - They see Reptites doing a strongman contest. They battle a few and win, earning a dinner with the time travelers.

Chapter Eight: The Stain of Regency

  • 64999998 - Crono, Magus, and Glenn burst in to the crater to find King Zeal has sunken deep underground to unleash the spell.
  • 64999998 - They must choose once more to save Ayla or attack Zeal. A few battles happen.
  • 64999998 - Magus and Glenn are held back by a Light barrier, but Crono, being Light innate, is able to go through and knock King Zeal to the ground, disrupting the spell.
  • 64999998 - Magus and Glenn join Crono to try and finish him off. King Zeal leaves, but notes that the spell will partly finish, and hopes they enjoy the fire. Magus, Glenn, and Crono are severely wounded before they can escape.
  • 1 - The screen cuts here, where Marle is sleeping in a bed in a stone room. Cedric wakes her and they ride out to battle to find Antaeus. Cedric uses the Frozen Flame, wiping out the Porre man.
  • 1 - As Marle is amazed to find the Frozen Flame, a Chronopolis agent locates her and takes her back.
  • 2302 - Marle finds Crono, Magus, and Glenn bedridden. It has been four weeks since the event (she spent the time in 1 A.D.) She talks to Crono.
  • 2302 - Lucca and Robo arrive. Belthasar explains to the party that in four weeks, the situations have grown worse. They are smoothed out naturally over years, but many people die as a result. King Zeal has done this just to see the party suffer, and despite Belthasar's agents' best efforts, he could not be stopped. Schala has been busy tending to Ayla in prehistory, where they need to visit first.

And in the interim, here is what King Zeal has done:

  • 11998 - King Zeal plants a bomb pending remote activation in some ruins and shifts some people of Zeal there.
  • 602 - King Zeal has Serran cause a small disruption on the mainland which lures the Vanguard out, hurting the force considerably and spreading much dissent.
  • 602 - Ozzie, Flea, and Slash appear to stop the tainted Mystics, eventually driving them back to an offshore fortress.
  • 602 - With no help, they eventaully falter, and Serran turns his Mystics on Medina, effectively eradicating them.
  • 602 - Later, Porre invade in reprisal, taking over Medina and killing all remaining Mystics.
  • 1002 - As a result, Medina is now inhabited by Porre friendly humans. Guardia is in dire straits.

Chapter Nine: Animal-like Persistence

  • 64999998 - The party find Ayla wounded, but alive. Things are back to normal in prehistory.
  • 64999998 - A strong Ioka man challenges Ayla to be chief of Ioka, citing her incapacitation as weakness. He challenges her to a game of getting the most animal hides off a tall mountain.
  • 64999998 - Ayla obviously cannot participate, but Glenn steps up to the challenge, comedically scampering around to get more hides than the other guy.
  • 64999998 - That night, Magus and Schala reflect on King Zeal. Belthasar informs them that his agents have opened up new ruins in the Dark Ages, and that they might stop by.

Chapter Ten: The Gray Forgotten

  • 11998 - The party enter the new ruins, and are shocked to find a bomb has been activated that will disrupt the ecology of the fledging new world.
  • 11998 - They try to stop the bomb, but each piece of the puzzle reduces the countdown.
  • 11998 - As they get deeper in, they find people of Zeal there who say the King brought them.
  • 11998 - The party are in a dilemma; they want to save the people of Zeal, but stopping the bomb might crumble the ruins. They tell the people to flock to the entrance.
  • 11998 - They save the people and stop the bomb, but are faced with the problem of what to do with them. Belthasar insists they are placed back in Zeal. The party argue, saying that's condemning them to death.
  • 11998 - Belthasar lets a slip about King Zeal, but not enough to inform the party that he's the reason Zeal is on the loose. The party finally have to agree to let them be restored to Zeal, though it is heartbreaking (believe me).

Chapter Eleven: The Glare of Midnight...

  • 1002 - The party arrive to find Medina occupied by humans. Shocked, they head back to 602 A.D. to discern the cause.
  • 602 - The party arrive to find Zenan set back by fighting which recently subsided. They hear that the attack was, at the last minute, let by Ozzie, Slash, and Flea, and that the Mystics have since retreated.
  • 602 - As the party arrive in Medina, Serran gives the clear for the Mystic genocide. Ozzie, Slash, and Flea spread to the three settlements to stop them.
  • 602 - The invasion is repelled and everyone meets at the entrance to the dungeon. The Mystic warriors and Magus break through, and the two groups split up.
  • 602 - They reach Serran, but realize that Porre just sent humans there as a reprisal. They know the humans will be massacred. The Mystic warriors volunteer to stop Serran if the others will save their kind.
  • 602 - King Zeal arrives and punts the Mystic warriors outside the fortress. He tells Serran that he needs his Mystics for a task, and leaves Serran behind, who promptly escapes the back way.
  • 602 - Crono finds the Porreans dead and returns to find everyone else gone. They decide to go to 1002 to see if anything has changed.

Chapter Twelve: ...And the Darkness of Noon

  • 1002 - Conditions are horrible now that the Mystics have grown close to Porre after several of them were martyred while trying to stop Serran.
  • 1002 - King Guardia and the Vanguard are staging a last ditch meeting with Porre-Medina to smooth things over.
  • 1002 - Crono decides to attend instead of returning to 602 since the meeting is taking place immediately.
  • 1002 - While at the meeting, Guardia Castle comes under attack from Mystics unleashed by King Zeal. The Vanguard seal the meeting room while Crono and the others rumble in the castle.
  • 1002 - Crono makes it up to the top tower, where he finds the portal and someone gets rid of it. He returns to the throne room to find King Guardia crawling to the throne. Marle rushes in, and he collapses and dies.
  • 1002 - King Zeal appears behind them on the throne of Guardia. Marle takes a shot at him, but he disappears. The Vanguard get things under control.
  • 602 - The heroes arrive, and speak to the Mystic Warriors. They note that King Zeal knocked them out and left Serran hanging, but they can't find him.
  • 602 - The heroes ask the Mystic Warriors to lead Medina again on the condition that they'll root out the love for Porre and not pull any tricks like before.

Chapter Thirteen: From the Mirror World

  • 2302 - They return to Chronopolis, where Marle argues with Belthasar about saving her father's life. Belthasar reveals that he was soon to die anyway.
  • 2302 - Belthasar acknowledges the tremendous influence of King Zeal and tells the party to search for Gaspar at the End of Time to find the Chrono Break.
  • End of Time - The party arrive to find Spekkio, who notes that Gaspar went back billions of years to find the birth of the Entity. Spekkio can take them there if they like.
  • 500000000 - The party find Gaspar camping out near a plant colony. He goes on about the planet being alive, and the party ask for the Chrono Break and explain what happened. Gaspar denies it, and is angry at Belthasar, noting that the planet will do nothing to help them since Lavos is eradicated and the conflict exists between humans.
  • 2302 - Gaspar arrives and severely lambasts Belthasar, and it is revealed that King Zeal escapes through his fault. Belthasar notes that he's trying to make it right, but Gaspar spares nothing.
  • 2302 - Gaspar takes the party aside and gives them a modified Time Egg. He notes that King Zeal may be capable of a defensive manuevre, and that this Time Egg could crack it.

Chapter Fourteen - Once More Unto the Breach

  • 65000000 - Ayla, if the party decided to stop King Zeal, heals.
  • 2302 - Belthasar, flabbergasted, suggests the party strike at the Frozen Flame to lure King Zeal out for battle. He notes that in a day, it will be one year exactly since the Ocean Palace incident, and that the party can strike at the Frozen Flame -- inside the Mammon Machine -- in the interim period between the Ocean Palace's destruction and the creation of the Black Omen.
  • 2302 - Belthasar notes that Schala must be present to allow the party to get close to the Frozen Flame. Magus objects but relents after being told that this will give him a shot to kill his father. Once the Mammon Machine is exposed, Frog will use the Masamune on it. Whereas the Red Knife failed, the full sword should do the trick.
  • 12000 - The party arrives to find a strange Ocean Palace. It is filled with certain monsters and Zealians. They get to the throne room and find the Mammon Machine.
  • 12000 - Frog plunges the Masamune in the machine. To protect itself, the Flame discards the Mammon Machine into the Darkness Beyond Time, and the Masamune is corrupted. Schala falls in the distortion before it closes. King Zeal feels the attack and arrives with his Frozen Flame. He explains that destroying the old copy wouldn't have hurted him anyway, and thanks the party for coming to him.
  • 12000 - King Zeal is temporarily stunned to learn that Schala has been sucked in, and Frog slashes him with the Masamune. He goes into a stasis, leaving his Frozen Flame uncovered. The party (absolutely all members) approach it.

Chapter Fifteen - Born in Sin, Die in Sin

  • 12000 - The Frozen Flame beckons and challenges the party to see if they can tame it. All six members (seven if Ayla is healed) approach, disappearing.
  • ? - Marle goes through a Guardia Castle dungeon and must face the torment of witnessing those close to her die. She sees her mother, who turns into Yakra. After killing him, he turns into King Guardia, who mutters that he killed Aliza, and now Marle has killed him. She falters.
  • ? - Glenn goes through a forest / Denadoro tileset dungeon and observes scenes of cruelty in his era, and is faced with being powerless to stop them and a failure to Cyrus. He is taunted by what appears to be Magus, and is told Magus is going to destroy Chronopolis to find Schala. Glenn is tormented with the decision of killing him, and afterwards, Magus's corpse turns into Serran. Glenn falters.
  • ? - Robo enters a dome of the ruined future. He must battle robots and kill humans who blocks his way to continue. The Flame torments him by calling him an in-betweener, caught between the world of humans and robots but unable to fully participate in either. Atropos later appears and says he is infected; he must fight Atropos to survive. Horrified, Lucca seems to appear and begins dismantling him. He ultimately kills her to survive, but falters.
  • ? - Lucca must go through a series of 1000 A.D. houses, laboratories, and Leene Square. The Flame ridicules her science as merely a tool to be used by governments and those more powerful than her, and that she'll never see the bright future she's creating. The scene shfits to her house, where R-series blue robots have killed her parents. They note they must kill her and assimilate her technology. After killing them, she discovers they were piloted by children, and falters.
  • ? - Magus enters what appears to be his lair. The Flame torments him by revealing just how many thousands of humans and Mystics died as a result of the war. Magus shrugs it off and keeps going, and after passing a few rooms with broken bodies of Mystics, he shouts "Where are you!!?" and enters the next room to find Schala. The Flame taunts him and blames him for the destruction of Zeal on account of his being to weak to stop his mother. What appears to be King Zeal arrives and challenges Magus in battle; this is a new enemy and he simply sits with a load of HP while a Schala enemy throws spells at Magus. Magus wears them down to the point where Schala cannot find. King Zeal appears to launch a dark spell, and Magus is forced to counter it. As a result, Schala dies, and Magus falters.
  • ? - Crono appears in the inner shell of Lavos. As he walks, he sees bodies broken upon the ground and must fight weird monsters. The Flame ridicules him for killing scores of people across time, and notes that he's nothing more than an assassin. He continues walking and sees the bodies of all manner of NPCs (important ones). He keeps going and sees the bodies of his friends. The Flame taunts him, saying that though everyone dies, Crono will continue on killing for eternity. He finds Lavos in the final chamber but is transported to a new area resembling Magus's lair. All manner of weird crap is there...however much the palette limit will allow. Robots, Mystics, humans, enemies. The Flame tells him they're all created by Lavos anyway. He's transported to fight the central Lavos bit (weakened to fit the game's difficulty) and after its over, Lavos turns into a kid who says "Forgive me." Crono kills it, and he's told that he's just subtracted yet another lifeform from the world. He runs around in the empty room before faltering.
  • ? - Ayla, if available, appears in prehistory. She says "Home?" and scampers around before Reptites surround her. She wanders around and defeats them. The Flame taunts her for being a ruthless killer, but she echoes "law of earth. Win and live. Lose and die. No change law." (In the JP version it was the law of earth, not rule of life.) She's transported to a factory. No battles here; the Flame just ridicules her for not being able to even comprehend the future of life. She notes that life is simple; eat and live, love friends and lovers, and live for the betterment of the world. Defeated again in this little game, the Flame takes her back to prehistory. She wanders around and destroys more Reptites before confronting a Nizbel creature. The Flame interjects that humans can never co-exist with other life. She asks Nizbel if he wishes to fight. Nizbel declines, and Ayla opts not to fight him. AYLA GF Ayla states that one must protect oneself, but that all life is precious. She is transported to a black screen, and approaches the Flame before hearing a KING ZEAL: No!!
  • 12000 - The party (three of them) materialize back at the Ocean Palace, where King Zeal has recovered from his stupor and stops the party from accessing the Frozen Flame.
  • 12000 - The party must battle the Frozen Flame.
  • 12000 - After the battle, King Zeal exclaims that something huge is happening, and withdraws through a portal with the Frozen Flame. The party returns to Chronopolis.

Chapter Sixteen - Dreaming Across Time

  • 2302 - At Chronopolis, Belthasar reveals that King Zeal has gone off the map somehow, and that this would be a prime time to fix things across time.

Chapter X: Where Dreams go to Die

  • Having finished sidequests, the team prepare for a final assault. Belthasar finds King Zeal is on the North Cape.
  • They confront him, and King Zeal relates that when Schala was lost after the mini-dungeons, Lavos began absorbing her to create the Time Devourer, capable of destroying space-time.
  • King Zeal relates that he wanted to rebuild Zeal in some form, but it is too late. The new plan for making a Time Devourer takes precedence over King Zeal's being used to get revenge on Crono, and King Zeal must now be absorbed with Schala to mature the Time Devourer.
  • King Zeal opens a portal to the Darkness Beyond Time with Belthasar's original Time Egg. The party can't stop it and must follow him. Belthasar lies to the party and tells them that defeating King Zeal will stop the Time Devourer cold and taking the Frozen Flame will break up the DBT (yes, it is a lie to us, but the party believe it).
  • The party follow him in, running through a host of discarded timelines, including old places and times visited like the ruined world of 2300 A.D., Zeal, etc. all disjointed, like the Dead Sea. Maps suddenly dropping off into darkness, etc.
  • They find King Zeal, Schala, and Lavos. They confront and defeat King Zeal. He remarks that his infectious legacy recently spread will haunt them, and says something to Magus.
  • They leave except Magus, who stays behind.

~

The ending begins with a depiction of all the characters at Chronopolis. There, they say their goodbyes and enter the Temporal Dispatch chamber. Ayla notes she will build the best damn cave Cro-Magnon man ever saw, and Frog notes that he'll dismantle the Vanguard since it is overkill. Robo wants to stay at Chronopolis. Crono, Marle, and Lucca hope that everything is okay. Marle is feeling sick from bringing back the Frozen Flame; Belthasar notes that it should get better with time. They return to 1002 A.D. Belthasar slowly turns to Robo, and they enter a new planning room. There, Belthasar mutters. He notes that the Time Devourer is not truly dead, and that he stopped the party because he knew they'd kill it, murdering Schala in the process. Robo is shocked. Belthasar explains a plan called Project Kid...it is hopelessly complex, and will require unprecedented timeline simulation, but it will produce the right ingredients for saving Schala. Robo volunteers to be a part of it.

Magus descends from the shadows of the ceiling to 'Confusing Melody', shocking both Belthasar and Robo. He reveals that he deduced something -- that King Zeal did not come into being as a villain of his own volition -- but that Belthasar botched the attempt to revive him with the other Chronopolis staff. Belthasar fears for his life as Magus blames the loss of Schala on him. However, Magus then confides in the plan, noting that he must once again go to a mysterious place. As a result, he cannot take part in this plan to save Schala. He has a plan, though. Guile walks in, and Magus notes that when the time is right, Guile is to be taken to the new landform El Nido to participate in the journey to save Schala. He notes that when he returns, he will meet up with Guile to learn of what has happened, and then definitely find Schala for good. Exeunt except Belthasar, who turns and says "Gaspar...this time I can make it right."

Cut to a black screen; "1003 A.D." We see a Reptite traveler approach Porre and give them Elements. Porre guy notes that this technology will finally let them sack Guardia and retrieve the Frozen Flame, of which they've heard about since last year.

Cut to a black screen; "Two years later..." pops up. Crono and Marle are sitting on the throne, and someone rushes in to tell them that the ultimate Porre attack has come. Marle is sick but insists on fighting. They break through and they fight; Crono kills about three before Marle worries that they'll find their baby upstairs. Crono refuses at first but eventually breaks away to go save their child. He escapes out of the back, takes a look at the castle, and keeps running as he hears soldiers approach. They go to the Truce ferry; the ferryman is scared, but agrees to take Crono and his child to safety, as he claims he'll always be a citizen of Guardia. They come to port, and are welcomed to El Nido. Crono's name is asked; he replies Miguel, and calls the baby Leena.

Cut to a black screen that says "Meanwhile..." Chronopolis. Lucca arrives to help finish the programming of FATE; Belthasar expresses great excitement over the coming Counter-Time experiment. He relates some more details to Lucca. Lucca is apprehensive, however, and asks Belthasar if everyone will be all right after this is said and done. Belthasar pauses and relunctantly notes that in order for his plan to work, a painful timeline will first come into existence. Guardia will have to fall, and Porre must be brought to power. Crono may be hurt in a new environment, while Marle will have a tough time ahead of her as she continues to recuperate from the Flame's illness. Even the Masamune will be corrupted from its experiences. But he notes that ultimate, when all things are said and done, everyone will be reunited and alive. Crono will cheat the incident that might otherwise claim him, while Marle will overcome the odds and lead the restoration. At the end of the day, all will be well...and everyone will be alive...He pauses here, and Lucca walks into another room. He then utters, "even you, Lucca..." Guile walks in and ask if it's time, and Belthasar tells him to stop bubbling and surging with such excitement. He then says "Surge...Serge? That just might work..."

And the OMG moment:

Cut to a dark location, reminiscent of Magus's lair. A portal open, and Magus steps out. He walks north to a cell to reveal...King Zeal. He notes that he almost -- almost didn't save his father, and still cannot trust him. But he notes that it is extremely favorous that he was able to save King Zeal...as King Zeal holds the last key to mastering shadow magic and beginning to master time itself. He notes that no matter how long it takes, King Zeal will teach him the final power...and he will make his return.

To be honest, I don't like that ending. Guile just appears out of nowhere and seems very important for the events to come, but in CC it's totally the opposite: he's so unimportant that recruiting him is not even compulsory... As for the Crono=Miguel theory, I think it seems forced, unnatural, not only because the theory can be shocking but also because it comes all of a sudden with all the other CC connections. Some connections are pure facts, but some like this one seems like overkill, like forcing too much connections... After these few scenes, a scene telling that Crono needs eyeglasses or a scene revealing that Luccia is "Lucca's Guile" could almost fit and not shock the player more since everything is already so shocking.

And despite all these "forced" connections (IMO), the most important question, unanswered for years, is still strangely left without much details: how the hell did Porre invade Guardia?

But well, this is just my opinion and maybe I'm just nitpicking (maybe it will sound more natural when actually playing the game). I do like the last part with King Zeal though. It's a bit darker than the rather hopeful endings of the series, but it's the point here.

Well.....we have to definately keep the project Kid reference that'd be absolutely crazy if we didn't.

The promethius circuit will be alluded to during the Lucca/Robo scenario.  So it won't be completely all of a sudden.

You really don't like the miguel=Crono theory?  I think that's the most believeable theory that has ever come out of this wonderful website.  ......sigh I really really like that ending.

We are definately covering why Guardia falls.  The Time travelling reptite that gets sent back to capture Marle is still alive when the timeline gets fixed due to TTI.  He then brings elements to Porre.  That would be a huge advantage.  The porre/guardia conflict is I think the best part about CE.

I've just started to play the more recent ROM version (yes, I'm late), and I have a question: how can (Cedric) Guardia exist in a world where Zeal didn't exist? History should have hugely diverged. Also, I'm still a bit confused about the timeline King Zeal created. In this timeline, did both the humans and reptites get in contact with the Frozen Flame, or just the Reptites?

Oh and on a totally unrelated note, what's the nature of Magus' journey some times before 11,998 BC?

I don't see why it's impossible for him to exist....I mean it is still a hugely diverged timeline.  Instead of leading a powerful army of Guaridans against Porre he's struggling to keep the remaining humans alive against the no longer extinct Reptites.

I'm pretty sure that the Humans still contacted the flame though Zeality will have to confirm (I even thought about having Cedric use the flame).  I say this cause they are more  intelligent.  I'm pretty sure the only difference is that the ice age was not as drastic allowing Reptites to survive and grow to power.  Everything else should be the same.

When you played through the long Belthasar speech was it as bad as you imagined?  I realize it's long but hopefully the music/sprites made it more entertaining.

I suppose the Belthasar speech is okay... I think it would be easier to grasp with more "individual" textboxes though... What I mean is that currently the text goes on and on in the textboxes without interruption, and often a sentence is spread across 2 boxes. You don't really have time to ponder between each textbox since the sentence is not finished. I mean, a textbox with an unfinished sentence

is like a paragraph with an unfinished sentence. The flow is difficult to follow when it's

written like this, isn't it? :) I think it would be better if each textbox would actually end with a full stop (so that there's a real "pause" between each textbox/button pressing).

EDIT: Also it would add more drama if the Frozen Flame doesn't "open" itself until Schala reaches it (the "closed" form is its normal form when the Arbiter is not there or it's not awake). It would add a few seconds of suspense before the player says "ohh! that's the Frozen Flame!"

Guile coming out of the woodwork is kind of Random.
What if some background on guile is created in the ending, like what if he is a clone of Magus that was dumped out from all the bending and shttering of timelines, and belthasar decided to nab him. although he is a magus clone he has lived very different experiences, memories, and no place to go. Therefore he is going to be used to watch over project kid.

Just from skimming it, it actually looks like just about the perfect fusion of every idea that's been brought into the project.  Once my computer is fixed, I'll have time to read it more in-depth.  That'll probably end up being the last thing I contribute to the project; I'm absorbed into planning a new fanfic, and have been for the past couple of months, save for the fact that my computer's been broken for about the last three weeks, so I'm posting from a library comp.
