Astral Amulet and Magus's Amulet
« on: February 13, 2006, 02:44:22 am »
These two items may be one and the same. Magus's Amulet came from Schala; she gave it to him before the Ocean Palace Incident, and he kept it throughout his life. Meanwhile, the Astral Amulet is a mysterious artifact from Zeal possessed by Lucca and given to Kid during her infancy. It consists of a piece of wood tucked in a purple pouch bearing the Zeal crest in gold and black. Now, consider that Cross's backstory was probably fleshed out before they decided to axe Guile's backstory as Magus. Is it plausible that Magus's amulet is the Astral Amulet, and that Magus, having knowledge of Project Kid or simply of Kid's existence, visited Lucca and gave Kid the amulet for her own safety?

This possibility would not only explain the mysterious origins of the Astral Amulet, including its crest bearing the Zeal emblem, but would also neatly link the mysterious item with established Chrono canon. Thematically, it is also interesting to see Magus give the Amulet back to his sister (albeit in a different form).

What do you think? It's a possibility, and even tantalizing, since it gives Magus a better chance at knowing what happened to his sister. Lucca's letter doesn't support or refute this much, but Lucca's speaking to him as the very personal Janus may imply that they became closer friends (and that the letter was written much later after 1004 A.D., which would be likely since she had to have had met Luccia by its writing). I'm not one to assume Magus or cool characters is behind every unexplained action, but the pieces seem to fit here. We won't ever know for sure, but it is a fun possibility.

They don't look alike though. Kid's Amulet is made of wood and Magus's is made of some kind of metal... It's hard to explain except if there was some kind of translation typo somewhere...

The discreprency is very annoying. Pretty much, I see 3 pendants. The Shell necklase on Kid's neck (Schala is seen holding it in the ending FMV), The Astral Amulet and Schala's pendant (where ever it may be). Though, maybe Schala's pendant turned into that shell necklase thing Oo.

Also, I do think that Magus giving Lucca the pendant would tie in nicely. But then you'd think why Schala isn't looking for Magus and Magus isn't looking for her after the game. Though, I'm starting to think that the end of the journal before the ending fmv was actually regarding Janus in a way. Since there would be no point having the wedding photo unless Schala already married Serge, and now is ready to look for Janus in a new reality etc.

The "camera" is reading the book, not writing it. The photo could easily have been taken after the book was written.

I don't recall it being said anywhere that Magus's amulet was made of metal, but perhaps I just need to be refreshed on the exact quote.  I think that making the link between Magus' and Kid's amulets works, but it needs more discussion before we can know for sure.

It's not mentioned that it's made of metal, but it can be seen on the official artwork:

Magus's Amulet:

Kid's Astral Amulet (we just see the pouch, never what is inside :( ):

The design on the pouch looks a lot like a Zealian door though.

Damn. Well, I guess that wounds this possibility, though it should be noted that the Hero's Medal changed designs across games (though the CT design strangely pops up in Medalsome in the background).

Im going with that pouch is Zealian, the insignia of Zeal is on it, and there is purple, the royal color.

Also, if you kill Magus instead of letting him into your party, you can pick up and take his pendant, which just gives you stat bonuses instead of rewinding time to save your ass.

unless the POUCH is magical! OMG!

I never got why people would kill Magus... I mean a guy with amazing magical powers or a pendant and ending with Glenn as a human...   I was so happy when I said, no fighting you would solve nothing... Magus is just too kickass.

Inquiry

What is the nature of the Astral Amulet, which consists of a piece of wood in a purple pouch with the Zeal crest on top?

Theories

Magus Amulet

ZeaLitY

Magus's Amulet and the Astral Amulet may be one and the same. Is it perhaps plausible that Magus's amulet is the Astral Amulet, and that Magus, having knowledge of Project Kid or simply of Kid's existence, visited Lucca and gave Kid the amulet for her own safety. Lucca's speaking to him as the very personal Janus may imply that they became closer friends (and that the letter was written much later after 1004 A.D., which would be likely since she had to have had met Luccia by its writing).

The main issue with this theory is that the two items look nothing alike. For them to be the same item, the assumption that the concept art changed would have to be made. While the appearances of the Hero's Medal and Time Egg were changed between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, it is difficult to simply write this off as a change itself. Another problem is in that Magus's Amulet is depicted as being worn around his hip, which precludes the possibility of the amulet being a small item that could be concealed on one's person.

I think it's pretty safe to say Pierre's Hero Medal is not the same one as Cyrus's. As for the Time Egg, it's an uncomplete one so...
