I believe it set the idea that Serge was living a peaceful life and had no worries. Then the portal open and sucked him in...

I...don't really see that as a "sidequest" seeing as you have to do it to proceed...But Leene's a bitch.

I didn't think it was a terribly effective use of the beginning of a game. Maybe I'm jaded with years of experience and an overactive imagination, but it was almost a bore, and certainly it accomplished nothing of artistic merit in terms of whetting my appetite for the tale of Chrono Cross.

The only real thought I gave it was that it was reminiscient towards Chrono Trigger in that they both start (fairly) peacefully, which seperates itself some from Final Fantasy.

They both start with the same quote of the hero's mother, telling him to wake  up because he overslept.

I think the Komodo place (I don't remember the name) is actually an original dungeon, despite being obviously very short. It's not about running from one screen to another and defeating monsters that wait for you or pop out of nowhere... Instead there are 4 non-linear screens and you have to do special things in order to start battle with the Komodo lizards: run till it's exhausted, block it with a rock, jump on it.

It's a bit boring though since Serge is alone and so there's no dialog... Perhaps it would have been better if Leena followed him and commented his actions (like Marle does with Crono at the Millenial Fair).

Or Poshel, if she was in your party.

I remember for some reason I had a bitch of a time getting the timing right for the jump...I would always land a split-second too late. I thought I was doing something wrong

I didn't like it.  It was sloppily done, too slow (look at the jumping parts), and a bore.  Something a lot more creative could ahve been done.  Also, like V-trans said, I never considered it a sidequest.

Same, I didn't consider it a side quest. Whatever it was, I didn't like it.

BTW, do you notice the pattern in japanese games where most of the time, the character wakes up before their adventure starts?

What games are you referring to? I can only think of some Dragon Quests and Chrono.

It's an easy way to start a game/story because it's like the beginning of the day. You enter through the character as the character is beginning something, so you experience all of the things that the character does just as he or she is waking...It's relatable as well...and with someone waking them up because they're late, it gives you some (even though it's minor) sense of what the character is like....

...mebby...?
