A new, heartbreaking theory regarding Schala
« on: May 25, 2019, 03:29:57 am »
First of all, let me preface by saying I should put "new" in quotation marks here. I've been around since before 2008, and in that time never heard anyone put this theory forward, so I'm guessing I'm the first. Anyhoo...

Schala could have easily escaped the Ocean Palace, she just chose [not to.

After certain events, she tells the party that she only has enough power left in her pendant to teleport the three of them to safety, but not herself.

That...  ...is kind of BS. :/  Ok but hear me out here:

The party is able to use the Mammon Machine to power up their version of the pendant, and when Schala saves the party, they are literally sitting right in front of it.

Given materials in both CTDS's new ending and both sequels, it can be reasonably presumed that Schala had no intention of leaving the Ocean Palace, especially not if her salvation came from the accursed Mammon Machine.

Quote from: Radical Dreamers, paraphrased
Hating what she'd done, refusing what she said or heard, to simply continue living was her curse.

tldr; Theoretically, Schala could have escaped and even avoided ending up in the DBT by way of recharging her pendant. She just didn't want to, for the pain was too great.

This reminds me back when I pointed out the pendant the party had landed not far away from everyone else; and remained there despite the party and Magus being warped out. Schala could've used that one as well, it's not like it was too far to reach or even notice.

However, I would agree that in her current state of mind, she would've not done it, either.

I'm not sure the pendant could have been recharged at that time, considering the state the Mammon Machine was in.

My thoughts exactly. Was it plausible? Perhaps only Melchior (with his intricate knowledge of the MM) would know for sure.

The mammon machine was still very usable, despite obvious cosmetic damage when seen again in the Black Omen. After all, it was powering the whole structure, and the Queen.

In hindsight, I think her staying behind by choice was always the implication.

And although I hadn't quite expressed it in my topics, sorry bud. I probably came up with it before you did. :P

Implied it somewhere in this topic... And reminded me of the reason I decided to cut it up into multiple topics... >.>

Added it to the last CT section paragraph: https://www.chronocompendium.com/wiki/index.php/Schala

It is consistent with the Radical Dreamers view of Schala...

Hate to necro this, but I realized something. When we first stumble into Schala's room in Zeal Palace, she's giving Janus the Amulet. At first glance, it looks like a very 'Schala' thing to do, giving her little brother a gift to keep him safe.

But re-reading through this topic, I was reminded of a character from another game who would end up becoming a martyr. In one scene, he's giving away his prized possessions to another party member in a clear indicator that he's ready to kill himself for his beliefs.

And that's when it hit me. The Ocean Palace Incident. It wasn't an accident. Schala planned it. She was planning to martyr herself from the moment we first met her!

What she didn't take into account was Chrono's interference, and that she held onto the idea that Lavos would simply destroy the Ocean Palace, not the ENTIRETY of Zeal. The fallout of which only made thing worse and compounded those already dark feelings… of which Lavos was more than willing to capitalize on during the fusion into the Dream Devourer.

So yeah. A little bit of Fridge Horror for an already depressing topic. :o
