Chrono Reflections - Before the Fall (TV Tropes version)
« on: December 21, 2018, 06:12:44 pm »
As with the previous topic for Children of Zeal, This will be the dedicated Tropes topic for the second 'volume' of the Reflections Project, Before the Fall. And like the previous topic, this is an attempt to hopefully avoid post-clutter.

There's going to be one more of these, then I can start importing tropes from the original topic.

General Tropes

Climax Boss - The Neo Dalton Imperial, with the man himself at the helm.

Disc-One Final Boss - Dalton, ultimately paling in comparison to Big Bad Daere.

Fake Memories - Daere, upon his big reveal, accuses Cain of giving these to himself. The fact that Cain recalls events that could not possibly have happened in Children of Zeal aids in Daere's claim. Ultimately subverted in Chrono Break to have been a Xanatos Gambit on Daere's part to utterly break Cain's spirit. Cain's memories were real, but Daere's plan works for a time.

Heroic Sacrifice - Cain makes a desperate one to save Zero from Dalton's ambush, setting up the final battle of the story.

Humongous Mecha - It turns out that Lion Tanks hadn't been the only weapons Porre had been working on. Que the Neo Dalton Imperial.

Mythology Gag - The form King Zeal takes during the mid-story battle is eerily reminiscent of Queen Zeal, being that of a helmeted face and two gauntlets with a body consisting of ethereal mass. When you add Norestein Bekkler into the mix, one gets the idea that all three characters ultimately managed to achieve some form of Zealian enlightenment.

Super Mode - Cain has one in which his right arm becomes surrounded by glowing runes. During it, he utilizes the power of all six elements. In Zeal, this phenomenon was known as 'the Sixth Gate', one step away from complete enlightenment. Zero ends up opening the Sixth Gate during the final battle with Dalton as well.

Wham Episode - Of which there are plenty.

* The discovery of Daere creating countless clones of Schala in the tanks of the Porrean base, and the awakening of Zero.

* The Zeal ruins north of Medina housing King Alphard's tomb, the man himself living on as a restless spirit, and the reveal of Cain to the rest of the party being from Zeal.

* The reveal of Dalton as Porre's Supreme Commander, and the subsequent failure of any attempt to end hostilities between Porre and Guardia as a result.

* The reveal of Daere being an alternate timeline Cain, and his subsequent shattering of the latter's spirit when he reveals that Schala has been Dead All Along.

* Dalton surviving Cain's skirmish and invading Guardia from the Dimensional Distortion. Followed by Cain's Heroic Sacrifice and Zero killing Dalton in revenge.

* Daere using the planet's 'power spots' to trigger a Chrono Break, causing the world to distort and chaos to spread.

* Zero waking up moments later alone on Opassa Beach, seeing the state of the world, and collapsing in a panic, seeing of all people Serge, Kid, and Magil trying to help her before she blacks out.

[Main Characters]

[Protagonists]

- [Cain Cray]

Blade on a Stick

Knight in Sour Armor

Playing with Fire

- [Glenn Zweibreicht]

Big Brother Instinct

Combat Medic

The Gunslinger

- [Reika Onin]

An Ice Person/Making a Splash

The Archer

Cloud Cuckoolander

Cool Big Sis

Ms. Fanservice

The Heart

Our Mermaids Are Different

- [Tarvos]

An Axe to Grind - One almost as big as he is.

Religious Bruiser - As a warrior monk of Guldove.

Shock and Awe/Dishing Out Dirt

- [Zero]

Adorkable

Badass Normal - She is incapable of using magic or elements until the very final battle with Dalton...

* Empowered Badass - ...when Cain's Heroic Sacrifice causes her to unconsciously open the Sixth Gate, as well as unlocking Schala's memories.

Empty Eyes - Her green eyes have no highlights or pupils, showcasing her lack of identity and otherworldliness. She gains pupils after losing Cain.

Empty Shell - What she was before being delivered to Bekkler, and Daere attempted to make her this.

Girl in a Box - The party finds her in a generator in a Porrean complex. A stray shot during battle ruptures the generator, setting her free.

Go Go Enslavement - When the party first meets her, she is wearing a black leather leotard... thing that seems to be common for Daere's doppledoll soldiers. Once the group enters Medina after escaping, she immediately trades it for far more modest dancer's garb.

Graceful Ladies Like Purple

Have We Met? - Zero's appearance causes Cain great distress. Having Schala's face will do that.

Heroes Prefer Swords

Hidden Depths - Her fighting style is based on sword dancing, which she learned solely to help Bekkler with his festivals.

I Am Who?

Identity Amnesia - She does not remember her life at all before becoming Bekkler's guest, nor most of the time she was used in Daere's cloning experiments, and wonders if she herself is a sentient Doppledoll. As revealed in Chrono Break however, the truth is a bit more complicated.

Light 'em Up

Roaring Rampage of Revenge - Zero shows no mercy to Dalton after what he does to Cain.

Sweet Tooth - She has a deep fondness for chocolate cherry sundaes.

You Gotta Have Blue Hair

- [Lavenda]

Black Magic - Her skills have this flavor.

Casting a Shadow

Expy - Although there are plenty of Dragonians with wildly differing body types, humanoid ones like Lavenda are more or less modeled after the Au Ra of Final Fantasy XIV.

My Species Doth Protest Too Much - Almost as if to deny the heavy-handedness of Chrono Cross' condemnation of humanity, Lavenda is well aware that in the grand scheme of things, Demi-humans can be just as devious and destructive as humans, and calls out the hypocrisy of those who think otherwise.

Noblewoman's Laugh - She does this when feeling particularly mischievous.

Our Dragons Are Different

Really 700 Years Old - She may have the general appearance of a girl in her early twenties, but Lavenda has been alive for at least over twenty-thousand years.

Reasonable Authority Figure

Voluntary Shapeshifting - She can transform into a giant dragon at will. She makes it clear, however, that she is NOT a taxi service.

- [Crono]

(Eleventh-Hour Ranger - Joins up with the group in the closing hours of Porre's assault on Guardia.

The Silent Bob

Red Herring - From his initial appearance, the story proceeds to paint him as a Disc-1 Final Boss, being our heroes most constant enemy. Then the Wham Shot of him removing his mask happens and he gleefully rips the title of Final Boss away from Dalton.

Wham Shot - When he finally removes his mask, revealing himself to be Cain from another timeline.
