Chrono Trigger Grammar?
« on: April 18, 2018, 01:22:43 pm »
So, I will admit, first and foremost, I'm a grammar freak. I read a lot, so bad grammar irritates the CRAP out of me. It gets worse the older I get. LOL

So on that note, I'm curious if anyone else has noticed the overuse of commas in Chrono Trigger? I didn't notice it as a kid, but as an adult it irks me. Ha ha!

There is no way I can be the only one who has noticed this!

I'm not a stickler for grammar in informal writing, but I do usually notice mistakes in published work, and I've never noticed an overuse of commas in CT. This is the only occasion that sticks out in my mind (it's been a long time since I played the original translation, though):
Quote from: Marle
But everyone calls me, Leene!

These mistakes always bugged me way more:
Quote from: Lucca
As a result, Princess Nadia ceases to exists!
Quote from: Melchior
This is a very rare!

Even so, they don't bug me THAT much. :P Woolsey was under a tight deadline and probably didn't have an editor.

Much worse is a computer in one of the DS bonus dungeons that mentions a "secuirty" lockdown. I have to imagine there were a lot more eyes on the DS translation than the SNES one, so this really should have been caught.

Quote from: Melchior

Naw, you misunderstood. Melchior is actually Italian (thus the mustache) and kin to Mario. You know how Mario is all like, "It's a me, Mario!" Same thing.

I think Woosly did mess up the quote, though. It should be -- "This a,,,very,,,rare,,!" He needed more commas to help drive home that it was really rare.

The one that bugged me the most, and originally just confused me:

Quote from: Elevator
Emergency Elevator shut off.

This is urgent, let me use the emergency elevator! Years later I finally realized it was

Quote from: Elevator
Emergency. Elevator shut off.

Naw, you misunderstood. Melchior is actually Italian (thus the mustache) and kin to Mario. You know how Mario is all like, "It's a me, Mario!" Same thing.

They also spelled his name wrong. It should be Melchiorre, to match the Italian spelling.

All of the above also irritates me. Ha ha! However the overuse of commas is even in the newer versions. I'll get exact quotes because nothing is coming to mind right now. Of course. LOL

Boo- That has to be the ONLY explanation!!

Ok, the elevator one is really funny. I'm going to have to remember that! LOL

Yes! They DID spell his name wrong! You guys are all awesome. :D
