General Discussion / Pedophilia
« on: January 27, 2008, 03:05:20 am »
I remember watching a Law and Order: SVU episode in which they were interrogating a pedophile suspect. The suspect eventually bursts out that like homosexuality, pedophilia will eventually be accepted. I dismissed this at first, but the more I thought about it, the more likely it seemed. Many of the initial advocates for homosexuality in Western society also advocated pedophilia. Now, I'm not talking about sex here, as that is on a completely different level (as a pedophile targets pre-pubescent child, that child does not have the mental capacity to make such important decisions), but just having sexual feelings for a child, or maybe even having platonic love for the child. Can we really deny these biological feelings? Many people dismiss pedophilia as a disorder, but the same people often dismiss homosexuality as a disorder as well.

Just for the record, I am not a supporter of pedophilia, but for other reasons than just "it is wrong/it is sick and disgusting", but I thought that I might as well incite some discussion on the subject, as I am quite sure there hasn't been any such discussion on the subject recently.

Also, I might as well ask what are your views on sexual relationships with a pubescent child (aka ephebophilia), or a teen? I am definetely attracted to 15 and 16 year olds...but I am one too ;)

EDIT: This is not a place to discuss your sexual feelings for children, but rather, to discuss the ethics, and motives behind it. I welcome psychological evidence, and survey results, but seriously, if you come here and say you like little girls, chances are you'll be reported to the appropriate authorities.

General Discussion / FaithFreedom.org
« on: January 23, 2008, 09:18:46 pm »
So yeah, I visited FaithFreedom.org, willing to participate in some intelligent discussions on the forum, but what I got instead was quite the opposite. For example, what I saw were Christians reciprocating what their local priest said about Islam being for offsprings of the devil, a whole lot of double standards, the main site Admin, Ali Sina, preaching his quite violent views, a whole lot of immature mocking ("mu HAM mads a pedophile lol"), biased perspectives influenced by Christian and commerical media, and misrepresentation. Is it just me or is wherever I go a cespool of ignorance and bigotry? I don't support what Islam has done to the world today, but I don't see Ali Sinas solution of banning it outright, destroying anything to do with it and violently subduing any Muslim that objects, quite appealing.

Chrono Compendium appeals to me because, even though many of us may not agree on subjets, at least we discuss it somewhat respectfully, rather than pour a butload of hypocrisy into my ears.

Just thought I'd rant.

General Discussion / DQ8 vs. FFXII [err...tiny spoilers]
« on: January 19, 2008, 09:54:28 pm »
So, I have both games right now, and I'm wondering, am I the only person that is infinitely times more pleased with DQ than the FF? The FF one has boring and incredibly cliche characters, a pretty annoying battle system and pretty shitty dialogue, though I admit the graphics are amazing. DQ on the other hand has just as amazing graphics, incredible voice acting, a pretty interesting plot (though apparently not as interesting as FFXII) and a really cool battle system that makes random battles a lot more fun. I've been playing DQ8 for about 115 hours, and including the optional endings, I'm only about 4/5 of the way in. But with FFXII, I got up to the part where there are those phantom things that suck up energy and if all the energy is depleted, ghosts come up or some shit. Apparently I'm not strong enough, and I keep dying. Ergh! Should I continue on with FFXII (I'm a really big fan of FF8 and 9, and X was ok too), or just play Star Ocean: TTEOT or Suikoden 4 when I finish DQ8? (the problem with these games is that I'm so accustomed with the awesome graphics, voice acting and camera work that I'm a bit fed up with more primitive RPGs).

Also, how can you beat this:

Hah! Try to come up with a rebuttal to that, FFXII fans!

General Discussion / The reason MsBlack, Zeality and Lord J hate religion

EDIT: Despite what Lord J says, I'm not trying to attack any one of you, but show the Compendium samples of some of the flaws in religion, and their consequences.

General Discussion / Cultural woes
« on: January 11, 2008, 12:17:22 am »
Don't you hate it when different cultures clash? Here's an example:

So the India and Australia are playing Test cricket. You may of heard of the problems, but this isn't about Ricky Ponting, the Australian captains, bad sportsmanship (which has lead to burning of effigys, threating phone calls and boycotts - those Indians sure are crazy). One of the Indian bowlers has a 3-game suspension for calling one of the Australian players a monkey.

On the other side, an Australian player may be banned (for fairness in rulings) for saying to the Indian side "I can't wait to run through you bastards".

So what's the big problem here? Well, the Indian player (Singh) called an Aboriginal cricketer (Symonds) a monkey, which Symonds found offence from because it seemed like an insult to his race. The Indians found offence from the Aussie (Hogg) because in the Indian culture, a bastard rightly means a person born out of wedlock, which is an incredible taboo in their country. But the Indians defence of the monkey is that in India, it means a childish and playful joker, while in Australia, saying bastard is casual and not in anyway offensive.

Gargh.

I hate political correctness.

General Discussion / SPOILERS!: His Dark Materials
« on: January 08, 2008, 08:54:15 pm »
Any readers of His Dark Materials out there? I finished the series a few weeks ago, and I think many of the forumites here would of also read it, due to its glorious story and well, anti-Christianity-ness.  8) In light of the movie being released, we might as well discuss a few things here (you can break up items of discussion of your own as well):

1. Do you like the movie or the book better? (I haven't seen the movie, though Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars so it must be crap. And they took at the major themes) If the movie, why?

2. This is the reason for starting the thread. At the end of The Amber Spyglass, are Mrs Coulter, Lord Asriel and Metatron doomed to fall eternally in the abyss? If so, Pullman was able to ruin a spectacular series with a horrible ending. It just seems bad, y'know? Sacrificing your life, I don't mind, but just falling and falling? Not only is it the most cruel of punishments, it's also boring! I can imagine in a thousand years Mrs Coulter saying "shouldn't of done this, shouldn't of done this etc.".

3. What is your favourite book in the series? I liked The Subtle Knife the best, as it struck a nice balance between preaching a message and delivering a fantastic tale. Golden Compass was too early in the series for it to explore some of the wonderful themes, and Amber Spyglass really wasn't subtle at all (no pun intended), and Pullman seemed to force his anti-religion messages into it, rather than let it flow. For example, The Authority being retarded, the Church being made into the most cruel organization (I wouldn't of minded this if Pullman had putten a better motive behind them than "destroying original sin" :?) and of course Mary's heartwarming tale. That said, still a very good series.

4. Will you read The Book of Dust?

General Discussion / La Boîte Orange
« on: October 27, 2007, 11:17:53 pm »
Does anyone else have The Orange Box? Decided to buy it instead of Halo 3. Here is my current rundown of the games (noting that this is my first time playing Half Life 2).

Half Life 2:

Started playing it. Awesome environment and atmosphere. FPS element is lacking so far (though I only have the pistol, machine gun and wrench). Don't have gravity gun yet. Compared to Bioshock...meh. Storytelling however is awesome; I love the real time elements and being able to control the story using the camera (aka looking outside a window some fellow humans are looking out forwards the story). Hope it gets better, because it ain't livin' up to the hype yet.

Portal

Absolutely brilliant. Learning curve is perfect. Puzzles are innovative and incredibly smart. Hilarious, and the story is pretty good too. Brilliant last level. Too bad it is too short.

The Episodes

Do you seriously think I'll play these before I finish Half Life 2!?

Team Fortress 2

Can't play online for the time being, as I am capped. No bots, which is a shame. Checked out some of the levels using the Directors Commentary function, thought it isn't really single player because there are no enemies. Looks ok.

General Discussion / RIP Oink
« on: October 24, 2007, 04:50:13 am »
Oink is dead. Apparently, Oink was one of the major pre-release album leaking torrent sites in the world. Sad news. But the most creepy part of it is that the replacement homepage to it states that the "users are now being investigated". Ouch! What would the risk of being caught be if:

1. You are a minor
2. You live in Australia
3. You donated
4. You uploaded/downloaded a fair bit (around 10gigabytes for both).

I am hating this anti-piracy system more and more.

General Discussion / The ratings 'n' reviews thread
« on: October 14, 2007, 06:31:17 am »
I hope this kicks off, because it can be a pretty good thread. Review anything you want, or rate anything you want, or do both! Music, movies, games - even a website. Though I guess it should comply with whatever rules the compendium has...if any.

I wont constrict you to a certain rating system, so post a rating system and I'll edit it into this thread with your username next to it, and a number. Or, you can choose someone elses. In the end, no matter what you choose, all reviews should have a rating system number at the top. I'll give you and example at the bottom of this post.

This is probably going to die out slowly, or just not get any posts. I hope not, because this can be a valuable contribution to the site. Anyway, here we go...

    IN RAINBOWS - Radiohead

Radiohead decided to target both of their audiences with Hail to the Thief, mixing electronic beats with modern rock basics. It was a bit of a hit and miss, and though generally good, was disappointing with regards to previous albums. In Rainbows is a step back to both Kid A and Ok Computer, with crooning vocals and climating atmospheric songs, brilliant electronic beats, and mixing the ambient and glitchy effects with rock far better than HttT. However, it sets itself apart from Ok Computer with more jazzy melodies and interesting experimentation. Songwriting is  not as good as Ok Computer, but this is acceptable as Thom Yorke's vocals are far greater in use as an instrument, rather than a storytelling medium. Hail Radiohead, for they have recovered their near lost glory![/list]

So, what should we call the decade of 2000 to 2009? The decade is almost over I guess, so maybe a more important question is what we should call 2010-2019, and subsequently, what we should of called 1910-1919.

    General Discussion / Er, hairstyles

I've been looking everywhere, trying to find a name for the woman's hairstyle where the hair is sort of...pulled back over their head. This might give a more clear explanaition of what I mean:

But without the total fanciness. Thanks in advanced.

General Discussion / In Rainbows: Radiohead's seventh
    « on: October 02, 2007, 05:43:30 am »
Yesterday, Radiohead announced that their new album will be called In Rainbows. And will come out in 10 days. Yep, that's right. 10 days after announcement. What's more is that the album will initially be a digital download, then in two months time also be sold as deluxe discbox, then eventuall be sold also as a normal cd. However, the most amazing thing is is that due to the lack of a record label contract, all of these will be sold only online, and the digital download will cost...well, whatever you want. It's a voluntary donation. Heck, I preordered it for 0 pounds.
