General Discussion / Star Trek
« on: May 08, 2009, 02:23:09 am »
I got to see an early showing of star trek today.  I really loved it.  Sure I have a weird fascination with JJ Abrams but I think it was more than that.  It was a great mix of action and humor.  Maybe not too much character development but well you can watch the show to see the character development?

Which brings me to my point.  I'd like to know the opinion of all the trekkies out there was this a good movie?  Does it accurately depict the show (i.e. if I liked the movie will like the show, is the show better than th emovie, or is the movie better than the show).  The biggest shocker to me was the humor, but I dont know if that's just JJ Abrams of if star trek was that funny he always does a fantastic job with putting humor in non humorous situations.

I'm debating watching a little star trek cause of this but well.......thats a huge commitment both in time and with my social standing among my friends.  I'm already by far the nerdiest person in my group ;)

Crimson Echoes Beta Testing / JP's Beta Test
« on: March 18, 2009, 02:09:55 am »
I'll do my final run through here.  You'll get some behind the scenes action as I jot down whatever comes in my head for one of the features.

PROLOGUE:

Developer notes:

This chapter is pretty much the same as it was since....well a long time ago :).  Zeality's director skills show in the very first scene. Having the two NPCs in the  sort of goof around before the actual scene between Crono/Marle takes place is a nice touch.  We definitely took feedback from the fans here after the first demo and made the fetching quest optional.

Fiona's dungeon was added because people wanted a way to fight right from the getgo.  It's one of the few maps that I didn't touch AT ALL.  Oh man...the medina mayor situatoin changes a ton through the game but 90% of the people wont' even notice :) Hopefully the 10% that do notice appreciate it.

I added the closing crono's shades cause of V...now i close them every time too :). I love the spy in the porre square, another nice touch.  Chrono'99 did such a good job with the meeting.  Crono used to look ridiculous when he attacked the guard, and 99 killed two birds with one stone by having the guard not die (fan feedback was not happy about the deaths) and adding a little humor with having the guard try to escape and fake death.  This guard is also shown to have been captured later (yet another nice touch)

Mapping:
Chair in choras on right side

Dialogue:

Toma flipped guy in shrine could text box position
Guy in the arbortoreum talks about a room behind the altar....this is just mean there's nothing there anymore :)
Crono's loud and clear should be on the top

DIFFICULTY: n/a

CHAPTER 1:

This was really when i decided to take over the project.  It wasn't really going anywhere with the current people so I decided to do my own thing with Magus by himself.  When I became the project leader I made chapter 1 my little side project and it actually fit into the story pretty well.

Another fan feedback moment is here with the infamouse: daltons dungeon is hidden behind the mountain (whose bright idea was that...oh yea mine :) ) At the time I was seriously afraid to edit OW events, but Chrono'99 wasn't haha. Dalton is always good for a light hearted moment. The elder used to die from daltons attack but again...fans don't like death :)  How cool is that stasis tube??? Way to go chrono'99!!

Mapping:

First door in daltons dungeon has black over it
2 lasher fight priority issue with black floor on bottom

DIFFICULTY:

I can definitely see the complaints from before. But I do think starting him at level 5 fixes it (Sorry V, I tried to make it optional but it's super hard). It's possible to beat Golem Boss w/o leveling up even once, and using a midtonic and a tonic (both of which can be gotten from chests). So I think were good there. Lashers are hard when they are paired but it adds strategy cause you need to take them out quick.

Crimson Echoes / Chapter Names
« on: March 04, 2009, 12:19:17 am »
Some of the chapter names cause the load screen to freak out because they are too long.... I'm going to keep track of them here.  Zeality/99 if you have a new name let me know

An Emerald Dream II
An Emerald Dream III
The Gray Forgotten
The Glare of Midnight
The Darkness of Noon
Dreaming Across Time
Where Dreams Go to die

Some are easy to fix....i think I used to have 2/3 for emerald dreams cause of this (maybe 99 changed them back to II and III)?  In my opinion....the cool chapter names are worth the bugs if it's not cutting off the words in the title.  Everything is fine when you load it, it just makes the PC's level 0 or blanks out their name.

It's up to you guys what to do, I didn't make the chapter names so I'd feel bad changing them more than I already have (i've made some changes if like...entire words were being cut in half).

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Weird word in graphics packet?
« on: February 18, 2009, 11:01:27 pm »
I was editing a graphic packet, and while looking for the packet I saw some strange looking....letters?  I'm pretty sure I haven't added these and I dont know where they would be in the game?  It looks like it says

PONTPO

does that mean something in japanese?  I'll attach the pic....maybe it's a little easter egg from the developers?

Crimson Echoes / Two Party Bug (Fix'd)
« on: February 16, 2009, 05:02:19 am »
Hey, the two party code doesn't seem to be working correctly anymore.  The second party seems to only have two players in it for most of thecombinations I tried.  I looked at the code and noticed you changed it quite a bit.  Just so you know the reason I made it the system of the remaining PC's appearing and you talking to them is because I found the "reserve slot" memory to be really unreliable.  It always came out to 00 or something (it was a long time ago).  If you get it working that's awesome but i tried for awhile :-/

Anyways the game is in a playable state so I think I'm going to make the patch for the debuggers.

I'm checking out for just one second so I can import a fixed new zeal map (it had a showstopper earlier).

Crimson Echoes Beta Testing / Let's Talk Difficulty
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:21:22 pm »
OK, lots of complaints about the difficulty here.  I want to give people a little background on the why this decision was made so I don't look crazy.  But first off let me skip to the end:

*I'll make the game easier*

It's pretty evident from the beta testing that the game is hard.  While I have personally done a full playthrough (albeit awhile ago) I obviously know the game inside and out so I wasn't really a good judge.  The other person who probably has beta tested the most is cybersnarkany who is an RPG battle guru so i guess he's not really relevant.  And finally Zeality who was able to get through stuff but he did say the game was hard.  So as you can see we did need this beta testing to get a good grasp of what's going on.

Now in an FAQ that hasn't been realised I actually have a question for "Why is the game so hard".  I knew going into this that CE was going to be a difficult game but we did that purposely for a few reasons:

1) One of the VERY few complaints about CT original was that it was too easy (probably second after too short which imo isn't a complains as much as a compliment :) ).
2) The CT fanbase is older now, maybe this doesn't apply as much now that CT:DS is released, but during the majority of CE's development I thought the average player would be 20 something years old, Old school gamer who knows his way around a turn based RPG Battle
3) I wanted techs to be a much more integral part of the battle system.  I personally didn't really use many techs in CT...spire on magus, lightning on nizbel....and spamming luminaire.

The people who have gotten farther than beast forest have almost certainly see the amazingness of OmniShield.  I admit you're not going to get through beast forest w/o using this but I definitely think (actually know), that once you know about that tech that dungeon is very doable.  I dont mind forcing people to use a tech cause magus is supposed to be a sorcerer at heart.  Maybe you shouldn't have to level up a couple times but heck he hasn't been in battle for 5 years so he needs to brushen up.  I also made haste and protect affect everyone.

It looks like this was an unpopular decision and 99 said it best in another thread...it's a chrono trigger game it should be easy.  So i'll go through and tone things down, I just wanted to let everyone know that I didn't force an impossible game on you guys, it was a legitimate decision I made...

Sorry.....and thanks for beta testing I know it sucks to be like....guinea pigs or whatever I promise I'll do my best to make it better and soon.

I made it through doomsday at Microsoft....atleast doomsday round 1.

Scary stuff, my entire building felt like a funeral home.  And it totally sucks that they are dong 1400 now and 3600 "later" it's tough working with that handing over your head.  Hopefully noone else here has had to go through layoffs cause it SUCKS.

General Discussion / If you don't see me again I died a cold cold death
« on: December 22, 2008, 05:17:00 pm »
Alrighty I got my snow shovel, my chains and a pocket of sunshine.  I'm off to the airport.  If you don't see me I spun out and died in the ridiculous amount of snow on the side of the road.

Washington + snow == Total Disaster... How does your guys state handle the snow.  Back in IL at the slightest hint of snow there's be like a dozen plows on the road sprinking salt.  But now that I'm here i like...barely see the plows.  My apartment complex didn't even plow the parking lot so I had to go get a shovel to get my car out.

Hey all,

I'm trying to get a feel for who has digg/reddit accounts.  If you do you may want to start utilizing them a bit more than normal.  If you are on the fence now is a great time to get one.  It may be very useful to have a solid user base with a good voting history in the coming months.

General Discussion / Creating a DS Feature Team
« on: September 21, 2008, 01:22:44 pm »
Hey all,

I think that we need to make sure we are prepared for the DS release.  Unfortunately I dont have the tools to do any of the below but I'm sure someone here does...maybe?

1)  Creation of a rom

Obviously DO NOT UPLOAD IT ANYWHERE last thing we need is this thing spreading to the internet cause of this site.  But i really am interested to see how similar the DS release is to the current version.  And a creation of a ROM would allow someone tomake a tool to dump the new dialogue

2) Pictures

Yea I'm in the past and don't have a camera.  But "unboxing" pictures are all the rage right now.  I dont know if there's a cool way to get in game screenshots that don't involve taking a picture of thee DS itself.
