Lavos, the Planet, and other Entities / Does the Entity exist?
« on: August 07, 2005, 03:09:46 am »
That's an interesting thought.

I do tend to think the Entity exists, but I also think that it was brought up in that fashion because it's more peripheral in terms of plot. CT, like most RPGs, is full of little mysteries embeded in the dialogue, like the Black Wind; there's no true answer to what these things are unless another sequel is made that tells us, so we're left to speculate.

I don't think there's any definitive canon identity for the Entity (forgive the silly rhyme), but it does make for good speculation. After CC, I'd say I like the Planet explanation best, but I do believe it's completely up to intepretation.

History, Locations, and Artifacts / The Masamune

Hmmm.

I personally go with the whole 'residue of negative energy' theory; after all, it's made of Dreamstone, which must be exceptionally sensitive to the will and intentions of its user. It would stand to reason that after enough bloodshed and chaos the sword would be heavily tainted and in need of a spiritual cleansing of sorts.

This has probably been avoided by the nature of the users to this point, as regulated by Masa and Mune, as it's been pointed out. Frog is really an exceptional being in terms of nobility, kindness, and pure intentions - I mean, in canon he spares the life of his worst enemy, who he's spent most of his existence fighting in some form or fashion. (Also, personally, I think he must've faced a lot of discrimination as a monster-type creature fighting on the human side. My personal version of Frog actually has a fair amount of compassion for the Mystics.)

I really don't know if the fact it's enhanced by Lavos' energy in and of itself is such a bad thing. Power is just power, really, and CT on its own has several examples of Lavos' energy being used against it (Masamune, pendant, etc.). I suppose an argument against this would be Zeal, though, but their tapping of Lavos' energy was obviously on a much higher scale.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Why would Serge and Kid get married?

*shrug* I still think, given the odds, it's much more likely Serge than Janus. (Who has to settle for a mere mention in Lucca's letter... sigh.) Still, until someone translates and gives us proof, it's not canon.

I kind of doubt that Magus could get hair that... big unless he used metric tons of 80s hairspray. But that's just me. It's also way too long for him, IMHO, and there's another drape on the other side...

Also, the guy in the photograph just happens to have the same clothing as the concept art of Serge? I dunno, you're right, that doesn't make it -concrete-, but given the odds I think it's far more likely that it was Serge than Janus, 'specially since they bothered to put Kid's dress on her page..

Yay, it just so happens I downloaded scans of Missing Piece a while back. Here's where they show the concept art of Kid's dress in the photograph, and here is Serge's.

And here is the picture of the photograph. It doesn't look to me like he has long hair - there's a drape behind him. And he does have the exact same clothes as the Serge in the concept art does.

*resists urge to complain about the concept artwork in CC :p*

I actually thought it was Janus too, at first, until someone said they'd translated it. I'll see if I can find out who said it.

(I kind of wish it was Janus. I mean, nothing against Serge and all, but the lack of Janus in CC was freaking annoying. >_>)

The picture on the desk in the end of CC, apparently. People have mentioned that the clothing they're both wearing is wedding dress. (Indian, I believe it was?)

I think it was also mentioned in some guide, but I can't remember which.

Sigh. This is the part where I prefer the way Radical Dreamers handled this. Kid = Schala = Kid, it's all clear-cut, and Serge and Kid can marry and Janus can be the brother-in-law from hell, and maybe Lucca's still around and they find her too, and it's all one happy kickass family with all my favorite characters in it...

(For the record, I sort of had a 'they got MARRIED? WHAT?' reaction to this too at first, since Serge and Kid just seem like really awesome friends during the game. But those're my favorite couples, anyway, the best-friend type, and that doesn't mean they can't get married.)

That said, there's got to be something to the "Schala 'Kid' Zeal" signature, and frankly, this is one of those parts where Chrono Cross gets nonsensical and convoluted and annoying and so I just go with what I want, which is Kid gets Schala's memories and everything is happy.

As I recall, the quote was more like, "could it be that Janus is more powerful?" or something to that effect. And sorry for not knowing some oblique fan translation of some random Zealian quote...Like I say, I just go by what I know from what I saw in the game and what I know. And everything I say? Yeah, that's right, it's my opinion too. Who the f*ck else's opinion would it be? Of course it's your opinion. It's useless to state such an obvious fact...but then again, I'm stating that it's obvious, but that's because you are unawares.

Here's the quote from http://cc.herograw.com/Black/Publications/ctscript.txt:

"The Guru of Life said that Sir
   Janus has stronger powers than
   even Miss Schala!

Janus must be using her and the
   Queen to get to Lavos..."

So there you are.

There's no need to take it so personally. I was simply pointing something out and I was trying to do so without sounding arrogant since it's silly to be arrogant about something like RPG knowledge - hence the 'IMHO,' which was supposed to emphasize the fact I wasn't aiming to sound arrogant. It's not stating the obvious; it's stating the tone I was aiming for.

As for the magic thread, it's just something I was curious about, and I see no reason why I shouldn't bring it up. Thanks for digging it up for me.

Yeah sure, if you're willing to say that "explicitly stated" and "subtly hinted at" are the same thing...

One of the earthbound says, point-blank, that Melchior knows Janus is more powerful, and a translation I've read says "he's hiding his powers." This is an RPG. That counts as explicitly stated, IMHO.

BTW, the elements in CC vs. magic - how do you know there's a difference? (I'm not contesting you, I've just been confused about that and I'd like to know if anything is said about it in the games.

Isn't it explicitly stated Janus is stronger than both his mother and Schala? Schala's still wicked powerful, though, she just... doesn't use it all. (That's one of the annoying things about CC: shouldn't Kid have kicked ass with magic?)

He was probably hiding it because of the circumstances. (And if your mom's been driven nuts by a huge godlike alien creature that's about to destroy your kingdom, who can blame him?) I have a pet theory that if he'd revealed the true extent of his powers, Zeal would have used him instead of Schala, and Schala willingly covered for him for his own sake.

Oh, OK. Still doesn't explain why she's the only one who can use the Mammon Machine, though, and apparently that was sent to DBT with her....

...and apologies if I should know this already, but why is anyone sent to DBT to begin with? i wonder how it differs from the End of Time...

I've always wondered why Lavos tried to merge with Schala to begin with, rather than attempting to kill her or send her back in time like everyone else (though I suspect the Entity did that). Could there, perhaps, be a link between Schala and Lavos...?

I mean, she was the only one able to use the Mammon Machine - even Zeal, who was possessed by Lavos in a way, could use it. My best guess as to why this happened was because Schala was powerful enough to use it with the pendant, and her use of it forged a link between the two; maybe Lavos thought it more expedient to merge with her for some reason since this link exists. Am I missing something?
