I do have some thoughts, but I am sans glasses at the moment & incredibly nearsighted :) After I get ahold of new ones tomorrow I will have some time on Sunday, I think, to start the conversation afresh. In the meanwhile I hope we can get an update from our artist-types!

Hell yeah! Our first card is complete.

The project seems a dead-ish of late, and so I hope that this will enliven it a bit. I plan on posting more info and inspiration this week.

I did in fact. I am way sleep-deprived and crashing off caffeine. XD

I also like Bolton. It's the most legible & clearest without being too frilly.

I agree with alphadorredux's assessments!

I'm really pleased with the way this turned out. It matches the spirit of the card quite well! You get the vulnerability, the emphasis on water, and the expression meanings clearly.

The lifestyle design community has so much promise, but in practice, they are full of the kind of vapid, bulleted self-help that makes American culture look utterly without depth.

(If you don't know what I'm talking about, look up The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris.)

Game of Shadows was marvelous-- the purest sort of entertainment. Sherlock & Watson were all we want to see in them (and what's more, the writers understand that and give you playful winks to that effect, hence Watson's otherwise pleasant wife being catapulted into the river with gusto by Sherlock). Stephen Fry is a fantastic foil to Downey Jr, and I agree re: Moriarty-- there was something quite uncanny and fresh about the portrayal, perhaps because most villains are so exceptionally over-the-top these days, and he was so calm, collected, and sinister in the most essential sense of the word (the trout scene was horrifying). Well-played.

I'm sorry to see you go, Josh. I wish I could have contributed more to the betterment of the Compendium's culture by responding to more of your long posts as they deserved. Do stop by every once in awhile, if you feel inspired!

@Zeality: Rome did do that. Incidentally, that's why Christianity spread the way it did.

Rome did enforce policies against the Christians, but they were also exceptionally accommodating of the Jews-- incidentally, part of the reason that Christians were discriminated against.

They basically treated the Christians in a similar fashion to the more uppity mystery cults, because that's what they were acting like.

I don't think anyone can be faulted for wanting to understand how sociopaths work, but I think "sympathize" and "empathize" are dangerous concepts. We must walk a line between trying to understand and never underestimating how much we don't understand. Do you really know what it's like to be that disconnected from people, that fundamentally, deeply, it's-in-your-wiring disconnected? I think it would take an immense, concentrated, sustained effort from someone with an ability to empathize and sympathize within the normal parameters... I don't honestly know if it's possible.

I hate that monsters caused my friend so much pain that she felt that the only way to escape her torment was to take her own life.

(And if anyone has the utter gall to say "wow what a coward" or insult my friend in any way then fuck you.)

I am, too.

I'm fortunate in that nobody I know has committed suicide, but I once saw a man jump off a parking garage. When I looked up articles about it later, the comments absolutely revolted me -- all these people trying to politicize it ("the economy made him do it!"), or saying good riddance to someone who didn't want to be here anyway, or talking about what an awful, callous person he was to leave his family behind. As if they could possibly understand the reasons someone would have to look down the height of a building and jump...

I wouldn't presume to know those reasons, either, but he must have had monsters, as well.

I'm so sorry for your friend.
