They also changed "struth" to "strewth"... guess that's more accurate to the australian dialect?

And something else I noticed, they changed some item names… Bronze Dagger is now Copper Dagger and Bronze Axe is now Copper Axe… seems that all Copper weapons are now just called Copper <weapon>

Another changed line. Don't recall the exact original text, but I'm 99% sure it was slightly different.

Been playing for a bit. Couple notes:

- You have Time Shifter from the start, not only New Game+… for some reason.
- There’s a toggle for no random battles and increased random battles. No random battles means you can run into enemies on the map, they’re still there, and when you touch them they do their “agressive / start battle” animation, but nothing else happens. Battles aren’t initiated. I don’t know what “boost encounters” does yet.
- In the start screen of the game you can choose old or new graphics. Old is what you know, and a more classic looking font. New means you get updated portraits, updated menu character art, a more modern font, and some texture touch ups on the character models. Serge gets a different, sharper face, in his overworld model as well as his battle model. Dunno about other characters, Poshul didn’t look too different.
- The dialogue text speed is a bit faster I feel like, and it also skips if you keep mashing A. New players will want to be careful to not miss anything.
- Music is unchanged, including Scars of Time, but the quality is higher and it sounds beautiful.
- There’s an autosave that saves whenever you enter the world map. It always takes up the first save slot, and it doesn’t seem you can disable it.

One more funny thing I noticed: I believe in the original, when you get the 200G from under Serge’s bed, it said “Serge took out his secret savings”. This time around, it says “Serge took out his not-so-secret savings”.

So Chrono Cross has no option to sort weapons, armor, or accessories. That always bothered me, and one day, having played the game so many times I had nothing else to do in it, I decided to make a meticulous plan to get a sorted weapons inventory. I'm assuming the RD Edition also won't have this option, so it should work for that too.

Note that this is just for weapons, but you can also do it for armor and accessories. However, those are much easier, because unlike with weapons, there aren't any armors in the game that can't be disassembled, and they can be equipped on anyone (with some female / child size exclusive exceptions). Accessories are even easier because you can equip three of them on every character (excluding helmets). If you want to do this, I leave it up to you to figure out which armors and accessories are unique and one of a kind that you probably shouldn't miss.

Anyway, here's my guide for the weapons part. Please let me know if you spot any contradictions or errors. I have done it successfully myself on my PS1 copy of CC, but I don't know if I wrote all my steps down correctly.

---------------------------------------
You can go with any order of weapon types you want. But personally, and for the sake of this guide, I’m going with:

Swallows
Daggers
Axes
Hammers
Guns
Gloves
Staffs
Boomerangs
Kitchen Utensils
Swords
Rods
Shots
Cards
Lures
Picks
Carrots

IMPORTANT NOTE: As you progress through the game certain weaker types of weapons cannot be forged anymore. It’s best to forge everything you can as soon as possible so have at least one of each. Try not to disassemble the weaker weapon tiers, just spread them out on characters you don’t use much.

One of the goals of this savegame is to recruit every character. Recruit every character you can whenever you can, except for Janice. You don’t want Janice until the time is right.

Start a New Game
Recruit Poshul
Save before fighting Karsh
If Karsh drops Bone Axe continue, otherwise reload until you get it
Do not let Kid join you
Save before choosing Viper Manor guide
Choose Pierre as guide
Make a separate save with Pierre in party
Load save before choosing Viper Manor guide
Choose Nikki as guide
Make a separate save with Nikki in party
Load save before choosing Viper Manor guide
Choose Guile as guide and continue. You want Guile because the Porcelain Rod is his starting weapon and that’s the only way you can get it in the game.
Save before choosing to save Kid or not
Don’t save Kid, recruit Glenn, Macha and Doc (DON’T SAVE THE GAME UNTIL ALL ARE RECRUITED)
Make a separate save with Glenn, Macha and Doc in party
Load save before choosing to save Kid or not
Save Kid, recruit Korcha, Razzly and Mel (DON’T BRING RAZZLY TO HYDRA FIGHT) and continue
Save before fighting Dead Head
If you steal Bronze Axe from Dead Head continue, otherwise reload until you get it
After becoming Lynx and recruiting Harle, make a separate save with Harle in party

DO NOT RECRUIT JANICE. Recruiting Janice will net you the (right now) useless Carrot weapon only she can equip and cannot be disassembled, and after a New Game+ you’ll still have it (or even multiple) which ruins the whole thing.
DO NOT DO MASTERMUNE QUEST. You only get one Sea Swallow in the game, and doing Mastermune takes it away permanently.
DO NOT COLLECT VIPER’S VENOM. Viper’s Venom can only be equipped on Viper and can’t be disassembled,
DO NOT COLLECT RAZZLY’S LVL 7 TECH. It gives you the Floral Rod which can only be equipped on her and can’t be disassembled.
DO NOT COLLECT PLASMA PISTOL YET. Plasma Pistol can only be equipped on two characters and can not be disassembled.

After obtaining the Chrono Cross, make a separate save with Chrono Cross in inventory
Make a separate save before Terra Tower
Save the game right before TD

Before beating the game or doing anything else, you should forge, equip and disassemble weapons until you have these in this order:

   ⁃   Sea Swallow
   ⁃   Copper Swallow
   ⁃   Steel Swallow
   ⁃   Silver Swallow
   ⁃   Stone Swallow
   ⁃   Spectra Swallow
   ⁃   Ivory Dagger
   ⁃   Bronze Dagger
   ⁃   Iron Dagger
   ⁃   Mythril Dagger
   ⁃   Prism Dagger
   ⁃   Bone Axe
   ⁃   Bronze Axe
   ⁃   Iron Axe
   ⁃   Silver Axe
   ⁃   Stone Axe
   ⁃   Rainbow Axe
   ⁃   Great Hammer
   ⁃   Ferrous Gun
   ⁃   Argent Gun
   ⁃   Denadorite Gun
   ⁃   Spectral Gun
   ⁃   Shockwave Gun

After you have this, COLLECT THE PLASMA PISTOL. Then continue forging / equipping disassembling to get:

   ⁃   Bone Glove
   ⁃   Bronze Glove
   ⁃   Iron Glove
   ⁃   Mythril Glove
   ⁃   Granite Glove
   ⁃   Spectral Glove
   ⁃   Silver Staff
   ⁃   Stone Staff
   ⁃   Spectral Staff
   ⁃   Steelerang
   ⁃   Silverang
   ⁃   Rockerang
   ⁃   Prismarang
   ⁃   Spatula Ca20
   ⁃   Besom Cu29
   ⁃   Ladle Fe26
   ⁃   Frypan Ag47
   ⁃   Saucepan SiO2
   ⁃   Crystalpan C6

DO NOT beat the game before you at least have these sorted. You can only ever have one character who can equip Swallows, and after a New Game+ you will have 2 Sea Swallows which can’t be sold or destroyed in any way.

After Kitchen Utensils there’s nothing more you can do right now, the next weapon you need is Bone Sword which can only be gotten through recruiting Pierre.

Beat the game
Save the “cleared game” on a separate save
Continue+ on Pierre save
Beat the game, overwrite “cleared game” save
Continue+ on one of your saved games where you have access to Viper’s Venom. Make sure Bone Sword is first after Kitchen Utensils, then get:

   ⁃   Bronze Sword
   ⁃   Steel Sword
   ⁃   Silver Sword
   ⁃   Stone Sword
   ⁃   Spectral Sword

Go whoop the Mystic Trio at the Bend of Time to get Slasher
Collect Viper’s Venom
Now forge / collect the Rods in your inventory in this order:

   ⁃   Porcelain Rod
   ⁃   Brass Rod
   ⁃   Iron Rod
   ⁃   Mythril Rod
   ⁃   Denadorite Rod
   ⁃   Rainbow Rod

Collect Razzly’s level 7 tech and get the Floral Rod
Now get:

   ⁃   Bronze Shot
   ⁃   Steel Shot
   ⁃   Silver Shot
   ⁃   Stone Shot
   ⁃   Prism Pellets
   ⁃   Private Deck
   ⁃   Pack of Lies
   ⁃   Bronze Lure
   ⁃   Iron Lure
   ⁃   Mythril Lure
   ⁃   Stone Lure
   ⁃   Prism Lure

Next you need Porcelain Pick. Only place to get it in the game is recruiting Nikki.
Beat the game, overwrite “cleared game” save
Continue+ on Nikki save
Beat the game, overwrite “cleared game” save
Continue+ on one or more of your saved games as you need to collect / forge all the remaining Picks
Beat the game, overwrite “cleared game” save
Continue+ on Glenn, Macha and Doc save
Beat the game, overwrite “cleared game” save
Continue+ on Harle save
Beat the game, overwrite “cleared game” save
Continue+ on before TD save
Use Chrono Cross to get characters from separate saves (you should have all characters EXCEPT Janice)
Recruit Janice, beat the game and overwrite
Continue+ on before Terra Tower save
You should now have Carrot at the bottom of your weapon list
Go through Terra Tower and collect Betta Carrotene, which should go below Carrot

Congratulations, you have all characters and a perfectly sorted weapons list.

I've been wanting to try this out in a fresh playthrough (maybe RD Edition), but I wonder. Normally you'd pick up the Heavy Skull first, and then every time you collect a part Skelly has some dialogue. But what if you decline Skelly's request to take his skull, then collect it later when you have all the other parts? Does it just skip immediately to the dialogue of him piecing himself together? Is there a time limit where you can't collect the Heavy Skull anymore? I'm 99% sure you can always go back and take it anyway after declining him first...

   Sorry, mum.
   I don't believe in
   fortune-tellin' at all.

"Mum" has become "dearie" for some reason. Does this mean there is going to be a new translation? If so, why was it not mentioned along with the other changes? Will we have the option to play with the original script, like how we can disable the graphics filters?

If the game isn't getting a remake, I want the original translation. One of the things that excited me about the remaster's announcement was that there was no mention of any changes in that regard. Now I'm worried about a repeat of the Chrono Trigger DS hackjob.

They also changed Kid's portrait for some reason, though that art looks incredible so don't mind that change.

It's weird that they're changing some of the terms in the script, I doubt there will be major differences tho. Then again, what was wrong with Chrono Trigger DS's script? It was much closer to the original japanese than Woolsey. I understand the frustration at changing some terms for nostalgic people, but I liked it.

They're making new portraits for all the characters. Kids is much more noticeable than others though because it's more different from her original than most characters.

But yeah, this is exactly why I'm excited to replay the new version. I doubt there's major changes, but I'm interested in seeing what minor things they may have changed like this. Even a minor translation change could alter the theories we've discussed so much over these years.

It looks like they’re using the updated character art for the new portraits, which for most characters their portraits were already based off of that, but Kid’s was completely unique in that regard, and also that she had two portraits, one where she’s smiling and one where she’s not. I guess that latter trait is now lost, but like I said the artwork looks so good I don’t really mind.

New Chrono Cross figures would be cool. I only have the Kotobukiya Serge statue, which I paid more for than I care to admit... I wish I could find the Kid one somewhere. Would probably give a kidney for that.

39
Well, at least maybe Square will see there still is interest in Chrono. Who knows what might happen. A FFVII Remake style treatment for Chrono Trigger would be pretty amazing.

40
That's true, that does look a little bit off, but whatever. It's not april yet, they could still be fixing some stuff.

Fan Art / Chrono Cross wallpaper update
« on: February 10, 2022, 06:47:49 pm »
I think ages ago I posted a Chrono Cross wallpaper here that I made. To celebrate the remaster I kinda remade that. Found a pretty clean version of the Cross logo, so used that instead, added some shots, and made it for a higher resolution. It can be kinda tough to find decent Chrono Cross wallpapers, so maybe some of you will find this useful.

Look, I will be the "that" guy...let's be real... huge disappointment; calling this "remaster" is just lying. It is a port. Port. This is just the same game in HD, something that can be achieved with any emulator and swapping the background for 4K upscaled ones. Search Youtube for "Chrono Cross 4k" and there will be plenty of videos from 2018-2020 showing graphics better than this. Trying to use the wrong definition will not change what it is.

Edit: I saw the tweet about the graphics comparison and i literally couldn't tell which one of the Kid models was the "remastered" one. I kept going back and forward trying to guess. This is a fact. The other image is possible to see just because the background.

We expect for any remaster at least new models, graphics, textures. The Spongebob Rehydrated game did a remaster 10 times better. Sponge. Bob. Look for it  and you will see what I'm talking about.

Again, Square Enix is showing little respect for the series and barely doing the work that fans did years ago. I would not be surprised if these ps4/switch versions are just being run by an emulation software (probably, let's be real).

The only thing good about this is that people are talking about the Chrono series again, and just that...

And I expect a price of US$20 or something like this.

It's not just a simple upscaling job. Look at these screenshots. The font has been changed, and at the very least, Nobuteru Yuuki has redrawn all of the artwork for all of the characters and character portraits. The portraits in this remaster look super crisp, where in an emulator they would look terrible if you simply pumped up the resolution.

They've also made some kind of changes to model textures. There's no way Serge's face looks this clean in an emulator with just a higher resolution.

Then there's the pre-rendered backgrounds. I think they used some kind of filter on these. This looks a lot better than what you get in an emulator, where they end up blurry as hell.

I do wonder why the FMVs still look low resolution tho. Do they no longer have the source files? If they did, they should be able to simply re-render them in a higher resolution.

In the end, it's a remake, not a remaster. It's not a barebones port like you claim, but it's also not gonna look mindblowingly good.

Chrono News / Re: Rumor - Chrono Cross Remaster
« on: February 10, 2022, 04:45:44 pm »
Honestly, beyond hyped for this... Chrono Cross is my favorite game, and I can't believe this is happening... Also, I believe this is the first time Chrono Cross will officially be released in Europe, which is pretty amazing.

Can't wait to New Game+ it multiple times to get all the characters... and do my "perfect inventory" save like I did on my PS1...

Also really psyched for Radical Dreamers. I've played the fan translation a long time ago, but this is official, and apparently quite a bit different in the script.

Once again, this sparks the hope of Chrono Break... I just really hope this remaster sells well so Square is again reminded of how many people still love this franchise.

Chrono Compendium Discussion / Re: Encyclopedia needs Editing
« on: October 11, 2021, 01:30:26 am »
About that Rainbow Equipment page for Chrono Cross, I'm 99% sure there is no Black Dragon to interact with before the relics quest. I'm not sure if he's present in Another Marbule early in the game, but if he is, you can't interact with him. The only way you can lock yourself out of fighting him is if you don't talk to Nikki after fighting the Sage.

Also, you can buy the Master's Hammer as soon as Serge gets reborn into a new body. You don't have to fight FATE first.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Want a new Chrono game?
« on: October 09, 2021, 09:40:36 am »
It didn't really tell us what happened to Schala. We still don't know for sure if she merged back with Kid, or if they stayed inidividual entities, and what she was up to after Cross. And then there's the harrowing void of Magus' story never seeing closure. We still don't know how much Serge remembers and what the fate is of the Chrono Trigger heroes in the unified timeline.

Only Masato Kato could write the story for the third game, if he still remembers. But I think it's been too long.
