In most traditional RPGs of the time, and even some later ones, four party members was the standard. Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest being the best examples.

I've never put much thought into it, but from a developer's perspective, I wonder why they chose to have three party members at a time. The battle system in Chrono Trigger was certainly a bit more ambitious than your standard turn-based battle system, but I don't think that made it impossible to have one more character on the screen. So I believe this was a design choice, not a technical limitation.

Perhaps they felt having four characters present at all times made it more difficult to give everyone something to say in cutscenes, or perhaps they wanted less clutter in battles. What do you guys think?

According to the theory on the Compendium, it's because the timeline was split and Crono's group can only exist in Another World. Why is that though? Home World's history pre-1010 AD should be just a carbon copy of Another World. And so it should have its own Crono who departed in 1000 AD on a journey through time to stop Lavos. There's no reason for there to be differences in Home World's history pre-1010 AD if the timeline was split in 1010 AD.

Even if that would be the case though, there being no Crono to save the world from Lavos in Home World is no fault of Serge. It was Kid and Belthasar ultimately who are responsible for the dimensional split. Yet Crono, Marle and Lucca in the Dead Sea seem to blame Serge very personally. Lynx also refers to Serge as the "assassin of time". Why? If anything, they should all be pissed at Belthasar.

In the developer's room ending, one of the devs explains the automatic accent generator. Basically they would input text, and the game would automatically change it to the accent of whichever character is in the party.

I do have some experience in game programming, enough to understand the basics at least. But I can't figure out how they did this.

Anyone else here with programming experience who has an idea of how they accomplished this?

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Actually, why -did- Harle join Serge?
« on: January 10, 2017, 05:11:23 pm »
It makes no sense to join him just because he's in Lynx' body. The person inside was still Serge and Harle knew that.

The objective given to her by the Dragon God was also to retrieve the Frozen Flame. Wouldn't that have been much easier if she stuck with Lynx, especially since he literally just got the biological key needed to access the Flame?

So let's sum this up...

- A mysterious guest arrives (from Porre? Don't remember) aka Lynx and approaches the general about the Frozen Flame
- The general buys into this, which is odd as the Acacia Dragoons seemed very content with the territory they held and not out for conquest at all
- Word arrives that Porre is planning an invasion of El Nido
- The general follows Lynx to Fort Dragonia along with the bulk of his military power
- Gets nearly murdered

Why did Viper go to Fort Dragonia with Lynx? If you hear word that an enemy nation is about to invade, what sense is there in moving to an abandoned fort somewhere in a closed off mountain range?

Also, as Serge enters the ritual room of Fort Dragonia, Lynx says they'd been waiting for him. What could Lynx have possibly told Viper to convince him they need to wait for Serge? And for that matter, why did Viper not question Lynx when he allegedly sent the Dragoons to capture Serge? And then when Serge confronts Lynx and Viper for the first time, Lynx babbles about how the end of the human world is nigh and other vague shit. Why would Viper trust this guy???

Characters, Plot, and Themes / "Welcome back, Chrono Trigger."
« on: October 17, 2016, 01:24:56 pm »
This is the response from the security system outside the Frozen Flame chamber after the person accessing it is verified as the Arbiter.

Why do you think that is? Serge wasn't the Chrono Trigger just because he was the Arbiter. There were a lot of other circumstances that made him the Chrono Trigger.

Assuming FATE was the Arbiter before Serge, why would it be referred to as Chrono Trigger every time it accessed the Flame? Does it mean that the Arbiter of the Frozen Flame is automatically the Chrono Trigger?

Kajar Laboratories / Chronopolis: The Polis War
« on: October 14, 2016, 02:56:54 pm »
I've been toying around with the idea of a fangame spin-off that details what happened directly after the Time Crash, when Chronpolis and Dinopolis fought. It's just an idea, and unlikely that I'll ever be able to make it an actual game, but it's interesting to think about.

I was wondering if anyone has input regarding the subject. Mainly I've been wondering, how long did the fight last? Did Dinopolis fight back, and if so, how? The Dragon God was a thing, it's not unreasonable to think they had more dragons at their disposal. Perhaps dactyls, which they could have used to combat the fighter jets of Chronopolis.

I've always assumed it was FATE that created the elements in Chrono Cross, which would be an interesting plot point as the Dragonians of Dinopolis possibly had that power innately, and FATE derived the elements from that. But the Compendium states that elements were in fact created by Dragonian survivors at so-called power spots. I'm not sure if the game states anything concrete about this.

I dunno if this belongs here as it's not exactly a fan project (yet), just an idea.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / How did Belthasar plan out Dinopolis
« on: October 13, 2016, 02:57:32 pm »
The Chrono Cross could never have been created if not for the Dragon Tear, Fort Dragonia, and the Divine Dragon Falls. All of these are results of the Dragonians appearing in the timeline, an act of the planet itself. How could Belthasar possibly have predicted that Dinopolis would exist in some alternative timeline, and that the planet would send it back alongisde Chronopolis? Was Belthasar even aware of the Entity?

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / So the panther demon...
« on: May 18, 2015, 03:02:25 am »
I never see anyone talk about the panther demon, and even the Compendium doesn't have a page on this "character". Yet this is the creature that pretty much set everything in motion. If Serge hadn't been bitten, none of the other stuff would have ever happened.

So my question is, who or what was the panther demon? We know it wasn't Lynx, because Lynx didn't exist yet. And there's no way you can tell me that after all of Belthasar's careful planning, his whole success depended on a random panther demon biting Serge.

Also, it's not just a panther, but a panther "demon". What's the significance of that?

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Why is Gaspar the Guru of Time?
« on: March 15, 2014, 02:27:03 pm »
I've never really understood the concept of the Guru's in Zeal. Belthasar made the Blackbird and the Ocean Palace, and for some reason that makes him... The Guru of Reason instead of Architecture. Melchior made the Masamune, but never really finished it in the original timeline, and is the Guru of Life... I could sort of understand this one if you consider how he gave "life" to Masa, Mune, and Doreen.

But Gaspar is the most mysterious to me, he was the Guru of Time, yet it didn't seem like the kingdom of Zeal was temporally active in any way. Aside from the Epoch Belthasar was supposedly working on, there was little to no research in Zeal about time travel... So why would he be named the Guru of Time?

History, Locations, and Artifacts / About the domes in 1999 AD
« on: March 09, 2014, 12:34:42 pm »
Lately I've been wondering about the domes in 1999 AD. Did they make them just because it's futuristic looking, or is there some sort of ecological advantage to it?

Characters, Plot, and Themes / So answer me this
« on: January 03, 2014, 06:00:46 pm »
Yesterday I was playing Chrono Cross, and was doing the Mastermune sidequest. Then something odd struck me about Karsh's flashback:

- Why does young Karsh have a portrait, while young Riddel does not? She has by far the most lines in the flashback, while Karsh has only one, which is little more then a stutter. They're both playable characters, so I really can't see what makes Karsh so much more important.

- Karsh says something along the lines of "was I really just possessed by that sword?" after Dario's unfortunate death. However, Karsh never touched the sword. Why would he be possessed by it? The one who was possessed was Dario, which led to Karsh dealing the fatal blow. I can't think of this as anything other then a very, very dumb writing mistake, but maybe there's an explanation.

Hope you guys have some insight on this.

Fan Art / Chrono Cross wallpaper
« on: April 11, 2012, 04:07:09 am »
Hello,

I created a Chrono Cross wallpaper. Because I was searching for one, and noticed there aren't any really good ones.

So I just went with the thing I personally liked most, several FMV shots from my favorite moments in the game. I tried to recreate the Chrono Cross logo as best I could in Photoshop, since there aren't any high quality logo images of Chrono Cross. I realize the pattern is not the same, but it's the closest I could find.

If anyone wants... I've also got a smaller version (1366x768) for my laptop.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Who are the Radical Dreamers?
« on: April 10, 2012, 01:38:54 am »
The Radical Dreamers in Chrono Cross are referenced as a well-known group of thieves on the mainland. Several characters reference to the group and Lynx references directly to Kid as a member of the group.

So, if Kid ran around on the mainland stealing stuff here and there, I can understand how that rumor may have gotten around. What I don't get is why Kid herself refers to the Radical Dreamers as if it were an actual group.

Who are the Radical Dreamers? How many members are there? As far as I know it's just Kid, but she seems to think herself that it's an actual group. Or she may be referring to herself as the "Radical Dreamers", which is quite... Strange. If she really does refer to herself as the Radical Dreamers while knowing she's the only member, it sounds to me like she has some issues...

So while playing Chrono Cross again, I remember how much it baffles me that not only the fairies, but also the dwarves themself blame the humans for driving them from the forest and being the cause of the fairy genocide.

Did I miss something here? If I recall, back in Hydra Marshes, the dwarves were LITERALLY trapping wandering fairies in cages and feeding them to monsters because they thought it was funny.

How is it possible that the dwarves see themselves as the protectors of nature when they violently attack other races for no apparent reason, or commit genocide on a fairy village, even bringing a goddamn TANK?

Having to hear the fairies' speech about how humans are so evil because they chased away the innocent dwarves just always annoys me so much. Just had to get this off my mind.
