Do you recognize this cover, by chance? I saved this to the "future update" folder and have totally forgotten what it is. I see CT advertised as featured in the bottom left, but no clues through reverse image search.

Thanks; that worked. I'll plug the backup in the forthcoming update.

Got it on the scripts page now.

Check out http://chronofan.com/Black/Publications/Chrono_Cross_RDE_Localization_Files.7z

Unzip and find the "en" file. What helped me read it was opening it in Textpad (with Word Wrap), and then I did a few find/replaces on commands (especially the "wait 20, wait 40", etc.) and just replaced them with nothing, to delete them out. Same with the line break commands (the "/n" you see everywhere). The random party text is still almost impossible to read, though, due to the accent operators.

Huge thanks for the Super Famicom scans. I always hate having to keep things offsite, especially since (knock on wood) the Compendium's survived since 2003 while witnessing tons of other fan pages go down and get lost forever. I've literally got a folder nestled next to my Compendium backup of other sites' content, just as insurance.

I'll get started on adding these now to the encyclopedia. I'll then take a pass through ye olde faithful (Labx8).

~~~
The Super Famicom editor is hilarious, because he's speculating on literally every single screenshot without having a single idea what they're depicting. Man, it looks like Square didn't provide any captions or information about this first batch of mockups, did they? :/
For Game On! November 1994 -- I had this for some reason under that category:
https://www.chronocompendium.com/images/wiki/6/69/I-img1200x900-1548056574cajfow199895.jpg (November)
https://www.chronocompendium.com/wiki/index.php/File:Game_On_October_1994.jpg (october)
Do you think I may have had these out of place? I'll go ahead and put your scan under November for now.
Fed the page through DeepL as well, and nothing too interesting. The editor is once again just speculating on most of the screenshots (on the Robo one, it's "Is this a race?!")
~~~

The attached Mystical Knights concept art is totally new, right? Do we think it was done by Toriyama? I'll get it on Official Art. I have to add that Crono timeline explanation art, too, even if the magazine did it...

I checked the new script. Doesn't seem to really be any new information in it, whether Chronopolis, the Masamune, Terra Tower, etc.

It's easier to read if you do a find and replace and remove some of the commands, but the generic party text is still almost completely impossible to understand due to all the codes. Anyhow, I guess that's that for the possibility for additional canon.

37
I loaded up tirion's room viewer, but it looks like the location art actually hasn't been scaled up? Then again, it's reading from cd-rom.dat, so maybe it's reading from the old Cross files. Either way, it looks like a pretty blurry AI upscale in-game anyhow, so guess there's nothing of value to rip.

Man, video downloadhelper for Youtube really struggles with longer videos these days (the audio at the end is always cut off by a few seconds). I don't suppose you have the original video files of all these and could throw them on Mega? I will back them up on the Compendium if so.

39
I'll get it uploaded. I think I'll just throw a link right in front of the offsets section, calling it the "grab bag" or something like that.

40
Man, that's kind of a show-stopper. Has anyone reached out to Geiger, recently? I used to communicate via his Gmail. It's worth a shot in case he can output a hotfix.

It's probably going to take me another 3 weeks to update the Compendium, so I'll monitor in case the patch gets finished before then (I'll definitely include it in the update). Amazing work!

Updated that offset page in the encyclopedia. We can always get encyclopedia access going if you need edit access concurrent with some research/investigation; just let me know.

Got it. That's pretty exciting, and yeah, I agree; FF6 seems like a wonderful canvas for any setting in general. Chrono Trigger is very much locked into Toriyama's style, and the specific eras make them very distinctive and unmistakable. It did make Trigger stuff deceptively easy, of course (that was the logic behind Crimson Echoes—we could very easily just make a Chrono Trigger 2 scenario without needing to change a ton of location art or doing other graphics hacking). It was a pure bonus that Chrono'99 figured out how to make a faux-elements boss battle, and Agent 12 also devised so many ways to arrange the events.

I want to believe that given those limitations of CT's style, there's still one more good story to be told—but finding that story has totally escaped me the last few years. Crimson Echoes suffered from various issues of its own, but a big part was definitely trying to sandwich it between Chrono Cross and also make it completely mired in the Compendium's temporal theory (which is an achievement, but still amounts to a bandaid on a few plot holes the developers of both games overlooked). If I could make something in the future, it'd be much more of a straightforward Chrono Trigger 2. But alas, it'd have to have a perfect story in order to feel like CT all over again, and really have that sense of 16-bit adventure.

Welp, that concludes the big divergence off topic from my end, haha.

Added to https://www.chronocompendium.com/wiki/index.php/Chrono_Cross_Fieldscript_Notes . I'll make a note in the current site update as well, in hopes it gets more visibility.

This is potentially better in a new thread, but I didn't realize you were the FF6 hacker. Do you feel like the full spectrum of FF6 hacking has been explored, at this point? (And I swear I remember that back in the day, Temporal Flux was only made by Geiger for CT because he deemed FF6 much harder to make an editor for!)

Only asking because that's still nagging at me—this feeling that the full potential of Chrono Trigger has not yet been explored. I know there's a lot of fanfare about the MSU-1 stuff to draw upon external data, but to me, it's like an artform to maximize what a single ROM can do, which for Trigger, means things like:

  • Custom Mode 7
  • Injecting custom music
  • 8th character patch
  • More overworld events
  • Near-full utilization of the ROM (so packing in as many locations, tilesets, monsters, items, etc. as the offsets will allow
  • Other tricks the CT team didn't really achieve, such as temporarily-controllable NPCs
  • Another mini-game or two, like Agent 12's colosseum

I haven't checked in on FF6, so just curious if the limits have been pushed like that. If there's any need for a new comprehensive CT hack, I feel like it's begging to be done if only to showcase the full might of what we can now do with the ROM.
