As I recall, the PSX CT does have a ROM in it, but the music is handled by PSF, and so the extra 4 songs aren't in place as SPCs. Just wanted to check.

Chrono News / Chronicles of Time 5-Disc Fan Album Released
« on: March 07, 2016, 03:19:40 am »
That's right, this baby's 5 discs. Chronicles of Time was created by an incredibly diverse spectrum of remixers and musicians. Even Alexander Brandon, famed composer for the original Deus Ex and Unreal/Unreal Tournament (along with M.C.A & Necros of course), has chipped in a track! To boot, there's a collection of high-quality fan art released alongside the music for free. Believe me when I say that this art collection has to be seen; there are scenes and tilesets I'm not sure have ever been covered to date. I won't spoil a single thing. Get over to Chronicles of Time and check it all out. All proceeds go to Médecins Sans Frontières. The dream of Zeal is alive.

Obviously, dead franchises and fandoms don't stay around forever. People move on, and the intellectual property is slowly forgotten until it's just a footnote. The day approaches, years from now, when Chrono Trigger will be talked about as a great example of 16-bit RPG design, but nothing more—just a high point in a historical overview of the medium. We shouldn't have any deluded ideas of keeping this going forever; eventually the site itself (as it has been heading towards for a couple years now) will be a cold archive.

But until that day comes, there are enough hobbyists and fans left to get a little more enjoyment out of this beloved world. Of course, I won't have any personal involvement with something like this (no time, plus the cease & desist order), but out of the options above, what's the most sure-fire way to relive the fun one last time?

My vote's on a Prophet's Guile-style ROM hack (and CT ROM hacks in general). RPGMaker, to be good, requires a lot of work from a large team, and I'm not sure something like that can be assembled anymore. Chrono Ark had several people contributing but still had a hard time getting off the ground, as huge undertakings like that require a lot of help. Ditto for Chrono Cross; to really output something new, there'd have to be a lot of graphical talent on board to create new field maps, as well as higher-level skill to map out the 3D clipping areas/model new enemies, characters, etc.

Something like Crimson Echoes of course would be fantastic, but I have doubts that, given the diminishing community, a team could be assembled to put it out in anything less than 5 years. Even in a Prophet Guile-style hack could take one to two years, but it's something with a proven formula that, if done well enough (and centered on a Chrono Trigger player character), could re-energize things a bit.

Anyway, just curious how others feel. This polling forum's gone unused too long, too.

Chrono News / Happy 20th North American Release, Chrono Trigger!
« on: August 24, 2015, 04:24:28 pm »
...And there's absolutely no news to speak of, unfortunately. I can try to update this weekend, in case any new remixes have come out, but there's nothing else left. In the meantime, check below for the fantastic Chrono Cross Brazilian Portuguese translation and new Prerelease alpha text deciphered by RyogaMasaki.

Edit: JoaoXP has thanfully pointed out that the new CT/CC arrange has a release date (October 14, 2015); check the page out here. And if you haven't played it already, don't forget about Prophet's Guile...

Chrono News / Supporting Material Translation Trio Released!
« on: May 04, 2015, 07:14:42 pm »
We've had some generous translation help from AkaiPanda in the last couple weeks! It's now my honor to bring forward three items that have been kept from western audiences for countless years:

[  Satella Tsushin Radical Dreamers Feature  ]  Find the link here. This is truly special! As provided by a friend of ChronoMoogle, this is a feature on Radical Dreamers released in the Satella Tsushin magazine in 1996 to hype the game. It features a very short blurb from Daisuke Fukugawa, who wrote the "Enimgatic Superweapon: ParadiseX" scenario. Definitely check out this undiscovered rarity!

[  Yasunori Mitsuda 2003 Procyon Studio Interview  ]  Find the link here. This interview originally appeared on Yasunori Mitsuda's website, Procyon Studio, in 2003. Mitsuda discusses his experience composing a few games, as well as a couple tracks in particular from Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. Check it out!

[  Final Fantasy VII Developer Excerpt  ]  Find the link here. We're not sure where this excerpt came from (likely an FF7 player's guide), but it features graphic artist Yusuke Naora mentioning Chrono Trigger's courthouse scene as an inspiration for drawing seamless maps for Final Fantasy.

Archiving this here so I can put it up as a feature once I have time for an actual update:

This can probably be done with just about any combo of characters at high levels (some combos/levels easier than others), but I will share an ideal set. What you will need:

- Use Crono, Ayla, and Robo
- Everyone at level **
- Equip everyone with Haste Helm
- Equip everyone with Berzerker
- Ayla will be auto-equipped with Bronze Fist
- Equip Robo with Crisis Arm
- Equip Crono with Rainbow
- Equip whatever type of armor you want (preferably one that protects against status ailments, although it won't matter much in the end)
- Set your Game Speed to a middle gauge (4 or 5)

Here's what will happen: Due to Berzerker, all of your characters will attack on their own without you being able to command them. The positive of this is that their Attack greatly increases. With Haste Helms and the speed gauge set at 4/5, your characters will be attacking 2-3 times each before Lavos ever gets a single turn in. Note: if you set your speed gauge any higher, your Haste Helms' effectiveness are dwindled since Lavos' speed is too high.

With Crono's Rainbow, he will be Critical Hitting 70% of the time for around 2k damage each time. Due to Robo's Crisis Arm, at XX9 health he will be dealing up to ~3500 damage with a Critical Hit and ~2,500 without. The trade-off here is when his health is XX0 - XX3, because he will then be dealing <1k damage (feel free to swap him with Lucca and her Wondershot, but it's essentially the same trade off). Due to Ayla's Bronze Fist, she will deal 9999 damage regardless of Lavos' form's defense with a Critical Hit and around 1500 without. She is the key player here as you are going to get 2-3 9999s throughout the battle. I have not tried doing this without her in the party, but I would imagine Crono, Robo, and Lucca can get the job done, too.

I have tried this around 15 times and not once have I died with this setup. It is good to do when you want to get multiple endings but are too lazy to analyze the battle. This method does take a bit longer, on average, than if you were to manually control your moves, but I once got lucky with Ayla where she 9999'd Lavos' Right Bit several times early on. Probably beat Lavos in less than 10 minutes total that time.

That's very cool! That's what I love about the 16Bit generation fans, always trying interesting stuff like this. You should make this into a video, as I think you'd reach a lot more people.

You probably don't need to be at level **. I'd say level 65. That's when most character's tend to max their defense and magic defense stats.

If using Lucca and/or Marle, then yeah. They definitely need to be lv**. Even at that level, they won't quite max their defense.

This has been another (probably) uselessly informative post, by me. Booyah!

Luigi, thank you very much and I agree.
Luigi and syndicator, I will make a video and post by the end of the week.
r0x, you would need Ayla to at least be at level 96 or whenever she gets her Bronze Fist. You cannot complete this without her 9999 Critical Hit.
Global, awesome vid and thanks for the shout out.

Crap, I meant to do this last night. I will aim for this weekend. Sorry.

actually r0xm2n a quick thing to point out, you WILL need ayla at least level 96 for that 9999. Maybe you already knew that, just a reminder. Although the guy did say he can probably do it without her so maybe that's irrelevant anyhow

Right now, we only host direct output rips of the music from the Chrono Cross demo (Square's Preview Vol. 5). PSF rips would be wonderful.

Site Updates / 20th Anniversary Update: Phase II
« on: March 12, 2015, 01:14:26 am »
Welcome to the remix update! The big news this week is that Square Enix is running a poll about their future direction, including questions about what game they should develop next. Find the poll here and type in Chrono Break! Between "FF7 Remake" and whatever else we might expect, a Chrono sequel ought to rank high in the results list. Go for it!

[OTHER STUFF]  We've become aware of a Squaresoft DVD issued as a promo item in 2000 to show off the PS2's 5.1 surround sound capabilities. It featured two Chrono Cross cutscenes remastered in 540p. Check out more information on the merchandise page here[MRT]  I've prioritized the items on Material Requiring Translation to hopefully let us burn down the pecking order. Check it out above the table of contents here[TODO LIST]  The Great To-Do list has been updated with a pecking order for the items; check it out here in case you can help.  [CHRONO TRIGGER 2]  I've created a page specifically for the CT 2 promo video that's long been rumored but never found; check it out here. It goes without saying that finding this video would be the single most important thing to happen to the fandom this side of the decade.

Site Updates / 20th Anniversary Update: Phase I
« on: March 02, 2015, 02:45:40 am »
Welcome to the Chrono Trigger 20th Anniversary update! The second phase is coming next weekend, and will feature new remixes, doujins, and modification news. The update headliner is a massive find: more Chrono Trigger alpha screenshots from V-Jump magazine! Thanks to Bouillon Vincent, we now have two amazing pages showing tantalizing unused locations and art mockups, including a Mode 7 overworld and possibly the Robot Village of 2300 A.D.! Check out direct links to the screenshots below. It goes without saying that these are MAXIMUM priority for translation! If anyone can lend a hand and translate these short captions, it'd be a godsend, as we're dealing with a possible treasure trove here.

[TRANSLATION]  It's here! RyogaMasaki has kicked reason to the curb and translated some of the unpointed Chrono Trigger Prerelease dialogue! If you're not in the know, the Chrono Trigger Prerelease contains some Japanese dialogue that dates to even earlier versions of Chrono Trigger's development. The kanji table was changed at some point, meaning this text is garbled. Using process of elimination and some other insights, Ryoga's been able to map the table iterations and knock out a fair share of the interesting stuff! See the original post here (it's mirrored on the Compendium), and for a summary of findings see here[2]  Three new pieces requiring translation have been posted at Material Requiring Translation, including a mention by Tetsuya Nomura and an untranslated Yasunori Mitsuda interview in which he talks about Robo's theme. If anyone can help, click that page and go wild.  [3]  Thanks to lytron, we have two scans of a Radical Dreamers feature in a Satellaview tsushin, probably previewing the game. Check out his post here. I've added the two full-res scans to the Material Requiring Translation page.

[SERIES]  Masato Kato recently released an early sketch of Lucca and one of Marcy from Chrono Cross. Check them out here and here[2]  It's probably old news by now, but Pilotwings Resort's "Plane" theme apparently contains a leitmotif of Guardia Millennial Fair. Listen for yourself here[3]  Mitsuda considered using Kickstarter to release a Chrono Cross album...in 2012, sadly. GameMusic.net interviewed Mitsuda in May 2012, and Mitsuda expressed this after discovering the fundraising site. You can see the Wayback archive of the interview here[4]  I've fixed a broken link to Senshi Banko - Phantasien II, our merchandise listing for a Nobuteru Yuuki artbook containing some Chrono Cross material. We've never seen or scanned this, so it goes without saying that if you have a copy, we'd absolutely love to have some scans to put on the Chrono Cross official art page.  [5]  The Cutting Room Floor found evidence of a cut character named Kukuru in the Chrono Cross Demo; check it out here.

[FEATURES]  CHRONO COMIX has been updated with three old gems. Find it here and be sure not to click this[2]  It's old news, but vivify93 updated the Chrono Cross least characters run about a year ago. Check out the final conclusions here[3]  FlyingOmelette did an investigation into sprites and other inner workings hidden underneath the visible layers of Chrono Trigger's field maps; check it out here[4]  Michael Williams has contributed some additional scans of Chrono Trigger: The Complete Playstation Player's Guide; check them out here.

[FAN ART]  From last year: [ Happy Valentine's Day by fantasyanimeguy ][ Queen Schala Sprites by TheMage ][ Trigger of Life by David Goh ][ Schala and Kid by grey_the_angel ][ Nizbel Leaping by Jenny ][ Gaspar Sprites by TheMage ]  [2]  And be sure to check out the amazing Chrono Cross HD renders of characters modded into Dissidia by 2PlayerWins by grabbing this collection: Link.
