General Discussion / Writing pet peeves

Oh come on Dewey.

Is this better?

As long as the reader understands exactly what the poster has typed, then by all means, it's OK

There's no official rules on the internet about what's "ok",

its a peeve of mine.

If it's ok by you, there's nothing I can do about it.

My main peeve is still the spacing between every setence.

It takes up lots of room.

It also suggests that the poster has lots of unrelated thoughts that wouldn't fit together in a paragraph.

Although, it is "better" in the sense that you did at least capitalize and use some punctuation.

Lavos, the Planet, and other Entities / Azala Break!

I always got the impression that Azala was happy to die and lose, knowing that if they die our, then the Apes will probably too. What's why she said "You'd wish you'd have gone with us" or something like that.

Actually, I think she was happy that she lost, knowing that apes would LIVE.  Keep in mind, she said something about "enduring a cruel and harsh ice age", and when she said "you'll wish you had gone with us", she knew we'd be living and suffering through it.

yea the list is good

no prob here

Writing styles like this.  No capitalization, punctuation, and feeling the need to double space between every sentence (aka no paragraphs).  And Lord J, I'm going to have to disagree with you about the "giving exceptions to people who are still learning".  This is a forum, involving very complex and involved stories.  If you are old enough to play them, and even understand some of them, and talk in the forums, you should be able to have a basic concept of how to write at least a somewhat legible and organized post.

And this doesn't technically fall into the "writing" category, but it falls into the forum category.... which is people who have avatars that fall in the range of 500X400 - 600 X 800 pixels... and then wonder why the spacing came out all weird after they hit the submit button.

Ooh, sorry, should've added a "No more Terry Schiavos!" in the poll!

And I'm no expert in US Law, but don't all groups, including the Religious Right, have a right to have a say in the publics view? :P

Terry Schiavo doesn't fit into this category, that's really a different topic.

And sure, they have the right to argue whatever they want.  However, we can't make (or break) laws based on moral objections.  That doesn't mean to say we can't make a law that AGREES with some of the same laws as say, Christianity, but we can't base the reasoning behind them based on religion.  For example, Christians and Jews believe that you can't kill because its written down as the 5th of the Ten Commandments.  Now, the US has the same law, but not because it's one of the Ten Commandments.  We have other reasons.

The last time we merged religion with state, we had things like the Macedonian States sacrificing a girl to the sea every year because of the wrong doings of Cassandra, the Spanish Inquisition,  and children going to war in the Crusades.  Not a good combination.

Backing up what Lord J said about Zeality's claim that survival is instinct...

Not true.  What IS true is the theory of (damn I wish I rememebered the exact name, I'll just call it) genetic survival.  Basically, its the theory that each being wants to continue the existance of their genes over themselves.

For example, it's said that in most cases, a father would take a bullet for their child.  Why?  To ensure that the genes already in existence keep passing on.  Genetic pools closest to you come first, so if it came between saving your cousin or saving your sister, it would be your sister.  Somewhat sadly enough, if the choice was between your cousin and your ADOPTED sister, studies show that it would actually be your cousin that you'd choose to save.  (Once, again, closer in the genetic pool).

This is somewhat on a tangent, but I was backing up what Lord J said.

You could also make a very extreme argument, once again involving life insurance companies. Let's say you have a couple kids, and don't plan on having anymore, you can't support your family, and you've been diagnosed with a terminal disease.  Solution?  Euthanasia, collect from life insurance policy.  Ensuring the protection and continuation of genes closest to you.  Somewhat of a stretch, though.

History, Locations, and Artifacts / Larubans Vs. Iokans
« on: March 27, 2006, 03:19:51 pm »
The Earthbound/Enlightened thing could ahve come up two ways.

One, was simply inheritance.  Being born into an Enlightened family meant you were enlightened, as the same goes for the Earthbounds.

Another may have been some sort of "test" early on in life.  I think it was the Spartans who took newborn males and let them sit on a sunroof for three days.  If they died, they died. If they lived, they were deemed "worthy" to be a Spartan male and warrior.  So maybe there was some sort of test (obviously not the same thing) that just determined whether or not you were "able" to learn magic.

Another argument, although it's not noecessarily a pro or con, rather a side effect.

There's a large debate/legal battle as to whether life insurance companies are required to pay off the policies of people who have euthanized themselves.  I personally would agree with the insurance companies on this one, as it could easily be manipulated, and is really just a different form of insurance fraud.

Morally, I'm against it.  I believe that death is a part of life, and you only experience it once, and while yeah, it can be extremely drawn out and painful, it's something you need to experience, and life is too valuable to toy with like that.  However, like my view on abortion, morals have no place in government.  BUT, I still don't think it should be legal, simply because it would make everything even more complicated if it was.  (Yes, I'm aware it's legal in Oregon, I think that's the state.)  The legality of it will just cause even more debate with tons of "what ifs" and "buts", and there will never be a clear line that you can cross.

I would undoubtedly be Crono.  Not necessarily because I want to, but that's who's shoes I would fill.  A hero who goes laregly unrecognized, and has a huge impact on history without anyone knowing of it.  And as I've stated before, sacrificing of oneself is an amazing trait to have.

Of course, the cheap strategy is to just steal a Yellow Plate from the Earth dragon.  Equip that, and you're golden.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Harle
« on: March 26, 2006, 05:41:53 pm »
Harle has actually always been my favorite chatacter in CC, for those very reasons.  She IS a deep character, possibly the deepest.  Everyone else's emotion's are more or less traightforward, whereas Harle's are usually masked, but you can read them if you really look into it.

Jus out of curiosity, could someone tell me how she speaks in the Japanese verson?  I'm not really sure how you make someone sound "french" through japanese text, although I'm assuming she doesn't even have a "french" personality in that version.

Actually I DID use Quina for certain bosses/enemies in my FF9 level one game.  She does help a lot with certain spells there.  OTHER than that, never use the damn stuff, except as mystic3eb pointed out, to truly complete the game as far as perfection goes.
