General Discussion / Re: Career changes and what not
« on: August 01, 2010, 10:16:34 pm »
That's cool, Ramsus. I remember talking with you about that a while back. I mentioned my friend did the same program as you, and the same language, but she went to Hawaii instead. She told me that most guys in her program went to Korea, and the girls went to Hawaii.  She actually re-enlisted, so she will be with the army for another 5 years.  They're overworking her a lot too, and that's the reason she remained a specialist and didn't go on to being a staff sergeant. She didn't want all the crap dumped on her with no assistance whatsoever. They gave her a hard time about that too since it "made them look bad" when her superiors put her up for promotion and she refused it. She actually sent down her whole family, including me, to visit and see her re-enlistment ceremony. I was supposed to pay for my own ticket, but I was broke and was telling her I won't be able to come when she bought me a ticket too : ). That was really nice of her.

And me, as for what I'm doing, I'm busy working on my Master's Degree in Library Science with a focus in Archives. I have been doing internships at several different archives around my area and now have lots of experience that will help me get my first "real" job when I graduate in December. Just two classes left wooo. The archives profession is very small, so I imagine I'll have to be moving out of state when I'm done as it's hard to limit yourself even to one state... At least I don't have a husband/children to worry about.  I hope I will find a nice location somewhere on the East Coast or maybe stay in California. I'm applying for positions right now anyway, despite my degree not being done yet and right now I'm applying to a place in Oklahoma. I'm not sure if being in the Midwest will really suit me, but I guess it's better than the deep south.

Now that I'm done collecting all the coins in New Super Mario Bros wii, I'm going to finally be moving on to Okami for the wii. There are some other wii games I want to play. This somewhat obscure game called "Little King's Story", and "Monster Hunter Tri". Oh and of course "Mario Galaxy 2".

I'm steadily running out of good DS games to play, which makes me annoyed that Tactics Ogre won't be on the DS. I guess I'll have to play the original another way. I've known about it for years and I'm really into tactics games. After I beat "Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia", I'm going to be kind of stuck looking for good games to play. I suppose I could start Heart Gold, but I really think I'm gunna wait till Pokemon Black and hope it won't be delayed.

Oh and fuck Zelda II. Hardest game ever. I hate that game so much!!

I'll probably be there again this year.

Polling / Re: What's your favorite Chrono Trigger quote?
« on: July 29, 2010, 09:34:31 pm »
Mine is that Glenn quote, and it makes me cry every single time XD;, but also his very first line in the Woolsey version : "Lower thine guard, and thou'rt allowing the enemy in".

My other one is from Lucca. "We're from way after the day after tomorrow." For some reason, that one makes me laugh every time. ''

Have you guys seen this? http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger . Excellent : D.  Though it's missing some good ones. Maybe there is a way to edit that, since it has the wiki name attached to it.

That's awesome, J! Dad watches jeopardy every night. I always tell him he should be on it, he's really good at it. I'll make sure to tell him to root for Ilana.

I've been waking up around 8 am every morning for about 2 weeks. I kinda hope it lasts... It's better than 2-4 pm anyway :p.

tl;dr

Bitches don't know bout my WALL OF TEXT

LOL. PLease, post more.

It's interesting when you go to universities and at the quad there is a FREE PALESTINE and then a pro-Israel table. Since college, I've been on the Israel side of things. They do the best they can with what they have to work with. The latest situation with the boat, maybe they could have handled it slightly better by not blowing up the entire thing, but if the boat refuses to be checked, then they obviously needed to handle the situation.

Bad News: They STILL haven't plugged that damn oil spill. Even when they do manage to plug it, it will cost millions of dollars and have a heavy cost on the ecosystem to repair the damage : (.

Potentially on the plus side, something this craptacular might be the Three Mile Island of the oil industry. As in, it might turn public support away from that particular source of energy, freeing society to develop hopefully more ecologically sound sources.

I'm not holding my breath, but as someone once sang, "always look on the bright side of death."

I don't know. I'm actually pretty disappointed that the US is no longer interested in nuclear power. Countries like France generate an absurd amount of energy from nuclear power plants. France has something like 80% of its power from nuclear energy. When done right, it's incredibly resourceful and self-sustaining. The problem is the stigma associated with it. You know,  in this day and age, it's way more likely for a stale nuke to go off than a power plant meltdown...

I don't think that the oil spill will cause people to rethink oil drilling. Most people will just forget about this. They don't really care about the dead sea life and the hundreds of millions it will take to correct/clean up the problem. The government hasn't really decided a firm course for alternative energy. It really boils down to costs... shit be expensive to start up >_>. Long-term studies taken of alternative energy efficiency with regard to cost need to be taken more seriously as the oil crisis will only be worse and worse D:. Oil sucks, coal sucks, dams wreck ecosystems, ethanol production is still pretty bad for the environment,  wind mills and solar panels are effective in some ways, but not in others. I personally am a fan of nuclear energy, but I don't think we'll be going back to that any time soon at all. Geothermal energy is an interesting option too, Japan is leading the world with those and they've been doing pretty well over there. They only work in certain places, but once the initial investment is  made, they generate a pretty good amount of power.

I finally found it! The Red Alert cue from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

snip

Neeerrrd :p. Well I'm glad you found the first movie interesting enough. The general consensus is that's it's pretty awful. I guess it was ok for its time, it was just really freaken boring. Only the last 20 mins of it kind of amused me. ALL HAIL V-GER. Though I really , really loved that whale one myself XD. I could not get into the original series at all, though I did like some of its movies.

I'm visiting the optometrist tomorrow. I notice that my vision gets slightly worse every year too, but it doesn't really bother me other than when I go to the grocery store and have to squint to read the signs. I have some blind friends on lj, and they live very fulfilling lives without sight. It's a part of their identity, so much that calling it a disability isn't really doing it justice.

Wooo missed the abortion fight. I think that it's called pro-CHOICE for a reason. Women have the right to CHOSE abortion if they want it. No one should feel pressured to have one, nor should they feel pressured to give birth if they don't want it. There are plenty of options in the case of an unwanted pregnancy and the role of an abortion clinic and its volunteers is never to push abortion, but to give women all the choices and help them decide what is best to do under their circumstances. I also find it disgusting when others act all high and mighty about what they think women should do with their bodies when they've never had to deal with an unwanted pregnancy. Sure you can say anything you want, but  the pro-lifers aren't the ones dealing with a parasite in their bodies that demands a great deal from them.

Anyway...

I love Severus Snape. I'm over halfway through the last Harry Potter book and... *highlight to read spoilers*

I went and read later parts of the book because I really wanted to know how he dies and I'm so sad about it! Reading his last words, needing to look into Harry's eyes really brought me to tears. And then reading the end where Harry names one of his kids after Severus and says that he is named after the one of the bravest men he knew was really touching. Snape was such a complicating character with a lot of depth, learning about how much he loved Harry's mom made his final moments really bittersweet. It SUCKS to have your favorite character killed off and I really don't know if I can stand to see the movie version because reading it was hard enough. Alan Rickman does such a superb job playing Snape too. [/beige]
