General Discussion / Re: What Are You Currently Playing? (Do NOT Just Make a List)
« on: January 21, 2009, 09:38:53 pm »
I'm really too lazy to be fancy and put wiki links, but if you're interested enough you can always google it.
Tales of the Abyss: I'm kinda late playing this I guess (it's a PS2 game), but I just got introduced to the "Tales of" series recently. It started with me being impressed with the SNES version of Tales of Phantasia (Japan only release, fan-translations are available though). After that, I decided to pick up Tales of Symphonia for the GC, which led to me getting Tales of the Abyss for my PS2.
I'm not very far into the game, so I can't really say too much. The ability to freely roam around the battle area is nice, because I hated not being able to do that in Symphonia. The story is just a little confusing with all this "fon" stuff, but I think I get the general idea so far. I don't really have much to say about the characters considering I'm not very far and I know little about them. Luke is annoying, but I think it's justifiable considering his situation. Anise is just really annoying. Jade kinda reminds me of Balthier, which is a good thing because he's one of my most favorite characters. Not much to say about everyone else. The only things that really bug me right now are the long load times and laggy world map.
P.S. If you've never played the SNES version of Tales of Phantasia, you should at least check it out even if you've played other versions (there are PS1, GBA, and PSP remakes/ports). It's a pretty damn impressive SNES game IMO. The other versions are better of course, but it's interesting to see what they were able to do with the SNES version at least IMO.

General Discussion / Re: Video Game Discussion Thread
« on: January 21, 2009, 07:54:20 pm »
Well it has been confirmed (through an Ultimania guide I think?) that FF X and FF VII are directly connected, in that the people of Spira left that world and journeyed through space to VII's world. Also, Final Fantasy XII, Revenant Wings, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vagrant Story are all chronologically connected - in that order - in the world of Ivalice.
Anything else is speculation until someone says something about it. I personally imagine that they will try to connect all of them in one way or another, especially with all of these re-releases happening.
The Ivalice series timeline goes like this:
FFXII --> FFXII:RW --> FFTA2 --> FFT --> VS --> FFTA --> FFTA2
FFTA2 is supposed to be in there twice.
FFTA takes place in "modern" Ivalice in the beginning. The stuff after that is apparently not "real" or something (I haven't played much of the FFTA games so I'm not too certain on everything). FFTA2 is similar, except they actually end up in a "real" moment in Ivalice history.
I never heard of that. Though Shinra in FFX-2 does make an interesting observation when he was examining the farplane, but that is supposedly not canon.
The writer of both FF7 and FF10 said that was the case in the Ultimania that chrono eric was talking about. There's a few minor connections that can be made. I haven't looked into it much but apparently the airship from FF7:DoC resembles the ones from FFX and FFX-2 (one of the people aboard the ship even says that it's from "ancient civilization").

Polling / Re: What Square series, besides the Chrono Series, should get a remake/sequel?
« on: January 17, 2009, 08:38:58 pm »
Vagrant Story probably needs it the most out of all. The story was almost setup for a sequel, and then it never happened.
Super Mario RPG would be cool, but I don't know. That's mostly me being nostalgic I think.
Other than that, I kinda liked Treasure of the Rudra's magic system. It would be interesting to see something similar to that today.
I'd love to see a Final Fantasy Tactics sequel too. Not the "advanced" series. Unfortunately, Yasumi Matsuno left SquareEnix, so we probably won't be seeing a FFT or Vagrant Story sequel anytime soon.

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Dalton (Post-DS Revision) [DS Spoilers Included]
« on: January 15, 2009, 09:21:41 pm »
Well my reason for believing that she wanted to turn everything to nothing before merging with Lavos isn't to say that she was an evil person or anything. I think it was more of a deep down in the bottom of her heart thought that came from depression, which can easily lead to such selfish thoughts. Lavos merely brought that out in her when they merged and/or came in close contact (and I think a similar thing happened with Queen Zeal and her grief over the death of her husband and her greed).

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Dalton (Post-DS Revision) [DS Spoilers Included]
« on: January 15, 2009, 07:50:47 pm »Didn't she do it because she partially wanted to?
"It was I, after all, who wished it-wished from the depths of my sadness and despair that all that was would be erased."
What Schala says after the Dream Devourer fight. Plus, if I remember correctly, she says something similar in Chrono Cross.
Her Rei-like desire to turn everything into nothing came more from her guilt and despair that she caused the downfall of her kingdom, though I wouldn't put it past her to want to destroy it in the first place rather than have to stand up for what's right by herself for once.
Anyway, Dalton's cronies mention in Trigger that they hated working for him. This to me is definitive proof that Dalton couldn't get power on his own, unless the mayor of Porre really is that dense.
Not that I don't believe you, but could you show me the quote that lead you to believe this? Her CTDS quote was the only thing I could find regarding the whole "turn everything into nothing" thing, but I'm almost positive she says something about that in Cross, but I can't find it.
EDIT: What I mean is, could you show me what lead you to believe that her desire to turn everything into nothing came after being devoured by Lavos.

« on: January 15, 2009, 07:09:14 pm »Well here I would like to point out if we are trying to figure out if Dalton had any type of help I don't think it matters I think he was the second best engineer/scientist in Zeal. He originally built the Ocean Palace after Belthazar left, He built the Black Bird, He added those lasers onto the Epoch.
It's certainly possible that he did it on his own, but his comical nature and past record against the Chrono Trigger team makes it seem pretty implausible.
He had the Daltonites at one point and they weren't able to stop everyone. Porre's army would have to be bigger and better than the Daltonites, especially considering Guardia has an army of its own (even though it may be inferior technologically, it's still something to consider).

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Chrono Cross Ghost Children related to characters in the Dimensional Vortex?
« on: January 15, 2009, 06:46:40 pm »
I think it's too much of a coincidence for them to not be related, but that could just be because I want to believe everything new in this port has some sort of relevance to the plot (well, except maybe the Monster Arena, although it does resemble the Grand Slam in CC). Even if it is "just me," I find it really hard to believe that the ghosts in CC didn't, at the very least, cross their mind when they put these ghosts in.

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Dalton (Post-DS Revision) [DS Spoilers Included]
« on: January 15, 2009, 05:38:33 pm »Keep in mind that while she was a powerful magician, Schala had an unbelievably weak will. Before you go saying "Noo Schala-sama is so noble and wise and with a beautiful spirit and such a tragic blah blah blah, " remember that even though she knew the power of Lavos was dangerous, even though she knew her mother had gone crazy, even though she had her creepy little brother's prophecy going on, she still did her magic summoning bit for God knows what reason. Maybe she just loves being popular? Bah... well, anyway, her submissiveness shows nothing about Dalton, really.
Of course I think the whole Fall of Guardia thing is mind-numbingly stupid, so take my insight with a grain of salt. I'm only ever gonna give canonical "Why this shouldn't have happened" stuff.
