I haven't finished watching the whole play through yet (just a few more parts), but here are a few comments from a humble fan.

First, I'm extremely impressed with the amount of work that was put into this. Despite the C&D, it's still an achievement that everyone involved should be proud of. As a fan, I can't express how much I enjoyed watching this game. I'm going to be pointing out a few issues that I had with the game, but please realize that I am in no way bashing the work. I'm just trying to express a few opinions in an instructive matter. I also realize that my opinions are not more significant than anyone else's. Like I said, I'm just a humble fan.

It's been a long time since 1995. We've all grown up a great deal since then. This is reflected throughout CE, but I think sometimes it's actually detrimental to the game. Here are some examples.

-- In CT, we all knew Crono wasn’t a mute. He was talking, but due to the main character RPG gimmick, he had to remain a silent protagonist. I thought this lead to a lot of cool scenes for the player. Sure it was a little silly, but it was great to see Crono have to communicate through actions. It’s almost like the game knew how silly this was, but these are the rules we’re sticking to them. The nodding, the sword drawing, the celebratory “pulling the chain…you knew what they all meant. It was all really charming. I understand the logic behind giving Crono lines. I also understand that you were also trying to emphasize that there isn’t just one main character in the game, but when he spoke I was immediately taken out of the Chrono Universe. I wasn’t in a sequel. I was in a fan game. It just didn’t work for me. I think it would’ve been great to keep the silly silent protagonist routine going. It also leads to more creative ways to see him communicate without dialogue.

--Glenn. I understand that you based the character on the Japanese translation. I respect that, but to me he was way too serious. The silly olde English accent might have helped the character maintain some of his original charm, but it was deeper than the dialogue I think. He almost became too similar to Crono in some ways. I think he works much better as the caricature of a heroic knight. It added more humor to the game, and also helped to make Glenn really stand out from the others.

Ok enough with the negative. Moving on…

--While Glenn didn't feel totally right to me, his interaction with Magus was priceless. Loved every second of that.

--While at times I thought things were too serious, I appreciate the little touches of humor you put in the game. For example, the sandwich stealing scene was perfect! While having a deep storyline, CT never took itself too seriously. They never shied away from the odd gag. Glad to see you tried to stay true to this.

--The original characters were enjoyable and fit well into the Chronoverse. Kasmir, Cedric, and Agent 12 were some of my favorites.

--The story is massive. It’s every Chrono fans wet dream. The game wouldn’t really work for new comers or casual fans, but it doesn’t matter. This is a fan hack for fans by fans. It was a love letter to both CT and CC.

--I loved the entire theme of the game. It must've been a little overwhelming dealing with all the timeline changes, but I love the concept. Chrono Trigger only dabbled in this. You had some great ideas. I really enjoyed some of the scenarios you created. Cedric's alternating roles in 1AD were a fantastic idea. I also loved the moral dileema caused by changing timeless. At times it almost seemed like Crono and co. felt like villains. It added a lot of depth to the game and characters.

--Except for a few issues here and there (Crono’s dialogue being a big one) I didn’t feel like I was watching a hacked rom. I really did feel like this was a sequel. The new sprites looked amazing. The new maps were all great. I can’t get over how impressive this game looked.

That’s all I got for now. I’m almost to the end of the youtube vids. I really appreciate you posting them all.
The C&D sucks, but at least the fans experienced Crimson Echoes in some form. I appreciate all the hard work put into this project. I just want to say that I think it was all worth it. We may never have gotten to play it, but I feel like we got a great storyline out of it. Thanks again guys!

What bugs me about companies like Square is that they only seem to go after the well done fanprojects. The badly made fangames always seem to get a free pass.
Actually, I think this correlates to the exposure the fan projects have. Despite what many people believe, I highly doubt Square was following the project from the start. Some people like to think they were lurking in the shadows, waiting to crush the project right before its release. That's just silly. The game was a huge project done well. A growing fanbase was eagerly awaiting its release. This is probably what caused Square to become aware of the project and issue the C&D.

Crimson Echoes was a huge undertaking. Sadly the quality and scale, which caught the attention of many fans, is probably what lead Square to hearing about the project. Wanting to protect their intellectual properties, and set an example for other Rom Hackers, Square sent out the C&D. They knew a large portion of the Chrono community would hear about it. Poorer quality hacks don't receive as much fanfare. They don't even blip on Square's radar. This is just my opinion anyway.

The Company of Myself
Quite the interesting game here. Go through the levels solving puzzles while the character narrates his life story. It's a short game. Most could probably finish it under 45 minutes. Sad story he tells, though. :(

I enjoyed the game, even though the plot was a real downer. I had some trouble with the last level, but finally got through it. Thanks for posting.

I just saw two hours of a movie called Shogun, It was really good I didn't have time for the whole thing though. I need to get that thing, its a book too I found out.

Book is a brutally long read, but well worth it. The movie was actually a tv mini series. It was well done, but the book is still better.

Gaspar appears in "Koi Ha Balance: Battle of Lovers", a simple board game/dating sim for the Satellaview.

Johnny or a lookalike also appears, wearing human clothes and riding a bicycle (lol).

There's also a character that looks like the CC version of Kid. Koi Ha Balance was released in 1996 well before Chrono Cross, so unlike Gaspar and Johnny this one is probably a coincidence, unless Masato Kato had something to do with this game and had the idea of a red Kid at that time (Kid wears brown and green clothes in RD).

Great stuff! Never knew this.

Since I pretty much have done everything I could with CTDS, my DS was getting dusty. So I ordered a bunch of DS/GBA stuff from ebay. Mario Kart SC, Mario Kart DS, Final Fantasy III, IV, V advance, and VI advance. (I only paid 40 bucks plus shipping for the whole lot!)

Both Kart games are awesome. Highly suggest them to any fans of the MK series. Haven't got into the FF's yet, but I'm really looking forward to it, since I haven't played them in years.

I'm also starting to really improve with Street Fighter IV. Now that I have a joystick, I'm learning a lot.

I am currently playing Guilty Gear Accent Core +, which I got yesterday.

That game is fantastic. I've been a regular Guilty Gear player since XX. Who do you play? My main is Testament.

I'm just a casual player, I'm not big on the whole tournament/tier thing. My faves, though, are Anji, Baiken, and Ky. Howerver, Robo-Ky is just awesome enough to warrant 4th place, cause he pretty much tells it like it is. :P

I always wanted to get into the Guilty Gear series, but fighting games are so much work! I always take them too seriously. I've been playing SFIV nonstop since it came out, trying to master one or two characters. If I took on another fighting game my head would explode...although KOFXII looks tempting.

Anyway I love the graphics on Guilty Gear. Have you seen BlazBlue yet? Also looks very pretty.

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: My Thoughts on CTDS

Speaking as another guy who could fall under the nostalgia banner, I didn't mind the new translation. It was a bit too formal for my tastes in a couple of lines here and there, and the new terms 'Fiendlord' and 'Athenian Water', I wasn't a fan of. But that's really just nitpicking. The good outweighed the bad, I thought. I quite enjoyed some of the humourous stuff - originally censored / cut in the SNES version - that they worked back into it.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I missed some of the original stuff, and preferred Mystics to Fiends, but overall the good outweighed the bad. Basically I'm glad I played both versions.

Just to clarify...DS wasn't a new script. This wasn't like George Lucas revamping his films. This was an attempt of a better translation of the original Japanese script.

It's important to keep in mind that some of the changes you might not like where indeed in the original Japanese version.

General Discussion / Re: So who Watched the Watchmen?

I was a little let down by the film. The source material was epic. The film was simply interesting. I think it was a valid effort, but the comic was way too deep to translate well into a film. I give them an A for effort though.

Without spoiling anything here's a few things I would've done to enhance the film...

1) Ozymandius. His costume didn't bother me, but the actor did. He wasn't very subtle.

2)Rorshach's origin scene was way too brief. An exact translation of it would've worked much better...and enhanced the movie's climax.

3)Nite Owl and Silk Spectre brutally beating the muggers...ummm what about that scene was heroic. It was way too over the top. Most heroes don't break limbs and murder muggers.

4)I don't mind the change ending. It worked in the movie's setting, but with that change Bubastis, Ozymandius' genetically created cat makes no sense. There was a whole genetic angle that was taken out of the film. This was fine, but Bubastis should've been taken along with it.

5)This one's gonna be hard not to spoil, but I'll do my best. The changed ending was fine, but the impact of the "big event" wasn't shown at all. When I saw the devastion in the comic, I got chills. In the movie you see some debris. It didn't really sink in.

Ok so those are my minor complaints. The film's greatest success in my mind, was the scene during the opening credits. I thought this was a fanastic way to introduce the audience into this world. I was really pulled in. I was a bit let down with the final product, but it was certainly a movie worth seeing.

Still loving Street Fighter IV. I'm not too great at it, but I'm improving.

I also love Smithwick's, Slim Jims, and Chicken Franchese.

Well I got Street Fighter IV yesterday, and it certainly lives up to the hype. The game has a lot of tweaks and nuances that I've yet to learn. Like most SF games, it's very easy to pick up and play, but pretty difficult to master. I'm looking forward to putting in a lot of hours to try and improve my game.

I highly suggest this to any fighting game fans.

I'm loving Overlord on the PS3. The controls work well. The premise is great, and its actually quite funny.

59
Yea, I played it this past fall.  It was pretty fun for awhile.  I stopped playing a little while after rescuing all of the different coloured gremlin things.  Its best to play it with a dual analog controller akin to the PS2/3 type.  The PC controls are cumbersome.

Cool. They're selling it for pretty cheap by me, so I'm gonna try it out. I love the premise...like a twisted version of Pikmin. It should hold me over until Street Fighter 4.

Has anyone played Overlord: Raising Hell? It looks very fun so I'm intrigued.
