Apparently there's a chance that Nintendo may be unveiling a new platform at GDC this year. As if the URL wasn't enough of a hint.

http://www.siliconera.com/2010/02/07/rumour-new-nintendo-platform-to-debut-at-gdc/

I've never been to this site before, so I can't say how reliable this article may be. If I had to venture a guess, though, I'd say there's a better chance of it being a new handheld or DS successor than an HD Wii.

Well shoot. Good thing I just got out of the shower, 'cause I'm going to be sucking on my feet for a while.

Makes me wonder how close to fruition the DS' successor is. Thanks for that, FaFniR.  8)

General Discussion / Re: Natal, wiimotes, and all motion control

Well, firstly, few are going to trust CNN, of all things, as a source for information relating to the future of video gaming, as their ability to do the news properly is rather debatable to begin with, and that's supposedly their forte!

I largely agree with RD's perspective: It's way too early to tell if motion controls are going to have a lasting impact. It's getting publicity at the moment because it's allowing a different audience a certain kind of accessibility to video games that they may not have had before. Whether or not it sticks will likely depend on whether that audience continues to find motion-controlled games as a source of reliable entertainment.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that it won't completely redefine gaming, but rather launch a new, more refined genre or style, as the technology develops. Motion-controls, as they are now, are just an alternate means of input, like the analog stick is an alternative to the D-Pad. As players become more familiar with motion-control schemes, it's likely going to become integrated into mainstream gameplay, and will become an option that players may or may not choose to experience. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if we get future copies of Madden NFL that allow players to choose to make a pass by using the Wiimote, or some other peripheral, to track a person's arm motion, or traditionally by mashing the analog stick and the X button.

As for saturating the market with gimmicks, I'm not worried. We've got a long way to go before we hit a repeat of the 80's crash. It's cliché, but all one needs for a reminder of those times is a copy of Atari ET. I'll take a motion-controlled Bejeweled clone over that tripe any day.

@ FaFniR: Do you have an article to site, by any chance? I'm curious to see how far along that DS concept is, or if it's still just fudge spewing out of the rumor mill. Found one.

If 256 by 192 lines of resolution make you squint to sort fingers from hands or eyes from eyebrows in 3D games, imagine a version of the Nintendo DS with twice or more per screen.

No one's talking tech specs yet, but in an interview with Japanese news portal Asahi.com, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says a new DS is in the works that'll boost the handheld's visual verticals and horizontals appreciably.

According to Asahi, Iwata confirmed the DS is being developed in-house and will include both a high-definition video display as well as a motion sensor. Yep, a motion sensor. While accelerometer tech hasn't worked out so well for Sony's PS3 (the SIXAXIS gamepad, that is) it's pretty popular with Apple's iPhone, and I'm talking everything from games like Super Monkey Ball to "tilt" scrolling to carpentry tools.

Available when? Iwata understandably wouldn't comment, instead noting that the DS is experiencing record sales in the US.

Translation: Not soon.

the president of Nintendo commented that the DS's successor "[will have] highly detailed graphics" and "a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing."

The world is still waiting on a title that takes advantage of the DSi camera(s).  :P

As for anything related to Gen V of Pokémon, it's been Nintendo's / Game Freak's status quo to wait for a new handheld to be launched before the series advances. I haven't heard anything substantial coming from the handheld front as yet, so I'd be skeptical of any Gen V announcements, unless they plaster it all over the Pokémon homepage.

Likely a move on Nintendo's part to discourage the development of a Wii knock-off. They won't do anything with the name; they'll just sit on it to ensure no one else tries to use it.

Tecmo Super Bowl ranks as notable one from my history. One of the first sports titles to feature a lot of things which are commonplace nowadays: league and player's association licenses (real teams and players), substitutions, stat tracking, fluctuating player conditions & injuries, and customizable playbooks, just to name a few.

Friggin' Neal Anderson. Him and his damned Bears offensive line.  :x

EDIT: Also tourists. I've had family come visit from out of state twice since Nolan's been in China, and they seemed so awed over little things that I've always taken for granted.

Wildlife is another good example. My family once hosted a friend of my father's from Australia (we're American). She was absolutely fascinated with squirrels: their chattering, tail flicking, tree climbing; heck, just the way they move enthralled her for whatever reason. It was like watching someone on safari for the first time. To me, the things aren't much more than vehicular fodder. To her, it was, at the very least, a top-notch zoo exhibit.

I'm amused by Bug Catcher characters in Pokémon games. I love how they boast about their own awesomeness before they throw out their team members, which, commonly enough, aren't much more than Metapods or Kakunas that are only armed with the move Harden. I do have to admit that they are spot on about their awesomeness; just not in the way they were implying.

Depending on how one defines the RPG genre, it would probably be either King's Quest I (DOS) or the original Legend of Zelda (NES) for me.

My first jRPG, as they're largely recognized nowadays, was Final Fantasy I.

Gawd, that was a long time ago. I feel old.

Facebook's friend suggestion thing is my gripe. It's really annoying because it tells me to talk to people I went to elementary school, middle school, and high school with.

That's why I filled in as little information as possible. The only publicly viewable and useful pieces of ID are my name, and a profile image which, if you personally knew me, would be a dead giveaway as to who I am.

And even after I add someone as a friend, they only additional tidbit they would get is an email address. Anyone who needs it already has my cell phone number, street address, etc.

People either know me, or they don't. I'm not volunteering information just because there's a space for it in my profile.  :)

Not to be confused with Charles Martinet, the voice actor of the Mario Bros. crew from the video games for the last 13+ years.

RIP Lou.

I'm assuming you're using the unofficial English patch, king? Given the nature of it, I'm wondering if the unaltered build has the same bug, or if the palette swapping is being caused by the patch code.

If you've got the time, try messing around with it and see if you can pinpoint some specifics. Is it just the size of the lead Pokémon, or some other factor that's contributing to it, like species or type? Is every building at risk of the bug, or just the Mimic Girls house?

Thanks for posting this. Most intriguing. It'll suck if this turns out to be part of the game's main code.

FaFniR: The PokéNerd in me thinks it would have been better to keep Surf for the Pikachu, I think. It's a great way of dealing with Ground types that it would ordinarily be at a disadvantage against. Fly is a hard move to use properly, because it takes two turns to execute. It usually has to be paired with a move or ability, like Mean Look or (Toxic) Spikes, that will prevent or discourage switching out to a Pokémon that's resistant to Flying-type attacks on the next turn.

Whatever floats your boat though. If you're having fun with it, that's the most important thing. Besides, most of the NPCs in Pokémon games aren't usually that crafty.

General Discussion / Re: 3rd Gen Consoles
« on: September 23, 2009, 04:34:45 pm »
Just for the sake of clarification, as my silly mind was confused at first; the PS3, XBox 360, and Wii are from the seventh generation of video game consoles. The third was the 8-bit era: NES, Atari 7800, SEGA Master System, etc.

I don't have a traditional 7th Gen console, but I do have a Nintendo DS. Is that appropriate for this thread?

I'm pretty sure I heard the ROM was translated into English by a third party. I haven't been desperate enough to hunt it down, though, so I couldn't tell you where it is.

I'll have Scribblenauts to, hopefully, keep me happy until HG/SS hits the States.

Yeah, you know. I never understood pokemon like that. Sure they're cute, but they completely suck and are useless to me... I'm not sure why they keep coming up with more and more baby pokemon and crappy pokemon that can't fight at all. I'd rather have a slightly more rugged one that is useful to me.

That's what evolution is for. One of the recurring themes in Pokémon is having the weakest, most useless species in the world evolve and grow into something with tremendous potential, like Magikarp --> Gyarados or Feebas --> Milotic.  8)

A lot of what the developers have been doing in that regard is fleshing out many of the species that used to be limited one-stage evolutions. Having a pre-evolution to work with can sometimes help people by adding variety and management options in stat and moveset building, depending on the species.

They've been adding post-evolutions too. See Pokémon species 461-478.  :)

Oh please oh please let Growlithe be in the wild in HG!

If the developers stay true to Gold's Pokémon availability, Growlithe should show up on Routes 36 & 37 in the Lv. 13-15 range, which was fairly early on if I remember correctly.

Not that I'm against using the newer PS models, but am I the only one in the room who still uses a PS1 to play PS1 games?  :?

Just curious.
