General Discussion / Re: Anime Suggestions Thread

Last Exile is a story about a pair of young courier pilots that become involved in a drawn-out, chivalric war between two nations. Set in a Victorian-esque world where the technological focus is set on aerial machinery, the series tends to focus more on the characters more so than the world itself, as there isn't a great deal of back story describing how the world came to be in the predicament that it's in. It's not a particularly long series, spanning 26 episodes, but I felt the plot worked well given the spectrum: it didn't feel too drug out or ended too early.
There's a number of fun battle scenes, ranging from WWI-style dogfights to battalions of riflemen engaging on another from massive, airborne troop ships. Scenes like these are not everyone's cup of tea, but aerial enthusiasts or gear heads will get a kick out of it.
There weren't a lot of Japanese cultural references that I can recall, but I tend to be rather oblivious to such things if I'm not somewhat familiar with them.

Birth by Sleep is a prequel to the original Kingdom Hearts. To my knowledge, KH3 is not currently in development, although with the series being the cash cow that it is, it's likely to come out at some point.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone Noticed Few Video Sites Have Loop Feature?

Do YouTube videos get downloaded into memory, or are they streamed live from the server every time they're played? I don't see how an embedded loop feature would be a significant bandwidth drag if PCs are just pulling the same file from RAM or the browser cache.

It's a myth: just ran an emulator test on high-speed. Twenty seconds and sixty lightning strikes later, no damage.
The DS port isn't any different. Not that I was expecting it to be, but I wanted to be thorough.

At least they're being consistent. Being able to maintain a theme across multiple entries in a series does provide something of a silver lining to it.

I've yet to touch alcohol. I've never quite understood the appeal, given the inherent dangers of over-consumption.
I think I'll stick to hammering myself on milk for the time being.

deviant was able to clarify my feelings a bit more accurately; I admit I posted that while I was still feeling a bit of road rage, and didn't make myself as clear as I had intended.
One should keep both extremes in mind when keeping this perspective. Agreed, it isn't particularly courteous or safe to treat most highways like drag strips, but as deviant noted, those that don't feel any hurry to reach their destination should realize that there are others behind them who may have some kind of deadline they have to meet. To me, it's equally discourteous to not allow the traffic stacking up behind oneself the opportunity to continue on their way. It's the latter that my frustration was directed toward.
I should point out too that I was on a two-lane highway at the time, which means there is no passing unless traffic going the opposite way is clear. That's when the whole "move your crappy Pontiac" mentality tends to weigh heavily on me. It'd be different if I was on the Interstate and actually had a passing lane to utilize.
Anyway, I just had to vent somewhere. Don't mind me.
I agree; it's too bad public transportation is so culturally irrelevant in the US.

For fuck's sake, the open roads are not your personal speedways. They are for everybody to use...

People driving on state highways need to be traveling faster than 40 MPH. If they can't travel within 5 MPH of the posted speed limit sign (typically 55 MPH), they should find an alternate route, and get (the frak) out of my way!
I hate being held up.

Why would one want to institute a permanent "one life to live" policy? I would think that, after about 30 days or so, the place would be rather empty; with the combined results of avatars being killed off, and the subsequent lack of interest in a world that a good portion of the populous can no longer access.
What meaning is there for a multiplayer environment when there are no players?

Queen Zeal's doing, perhaps? It would stand to reason that she may have informed humanity of how long they had left to live. She does so as Crono's party approaches the entrance to the Black Omen, at least.

General Discussion / Re: Videogame HUDs? Your opinion...
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:45:41 pm »
A good course of action, if it's feasible, is to include everything and give the player the opportunity to toggle whatever they (don't) need. Many of the better HUDs I've used have had a number of customization options.

At least the berries she does send you are difficult to get through other means. It would be a different story if she sent you a box of Oran Berries every two hours.

-"I'm Cameron the Photographer! I like taking pictures of ten year old boys/girls, out in the field and even offer to let them use my private studio so they can dress up. There's NOTHING sketchy about that!"
It's Japan. Need I say anything else?

-I used my most under-equipped party in history(i.e., no legendaries, no pokemon above level 46, 3 full restores and only a couple of max revives) and beat the Elite Four with very little trouble. The challenge is kind of lacking there.
I agree with FaFniR; the under-leveled E4 is largely due to the encounter happening, for all intents and purposes, in the middle of the game. It only makes sense that the E4's teams would be about Lv. 40-50-ish.
Being able to tackle Red's party later on more than makes up for that, though.

the available space between the Daycare and Goldenrod is comparatively much shorter than it is in the last two generations, so hatching eggs becomes a daunting task.
Try using a different stretch of road. I've been riding the bike back and forth along the main North/South road that runs through Goldenrod. Granted, it's not the longest route ever conceived, but it's clear of obstacles if you stick to the right-hand side.
If you're not already, be sure you're carrying a Pokémon with either the Magma Armor or Flame Body abilities as well, as this will significantly cut the egg hatching time. Hatched eggs in less than 10 minutes or it's free.

« on: March 07, 2010, 09:44:55 pm »It's done me wonders in figuring them out and building a lasting relationship between all of them, something I've yet to accomplish with texting.
It depends on the people involved, I suppose. There are many of us, that, in order to have a fulfilling relationship with someone, need to have face-to-face interaction. On the topic of miscommunication, there are many subtleties in communicating in-person that can't be relayed consistently through text: vocal pitch, gestures, facial expressions, etc. It's the lack of these that could be behind a number of the communication issues that Genesis is speaking of.
In my case, I feel I can best convey myself when those subtleties are taken out of the equation. Rather than aid, my non-verbal cues tend to mislead those who aren't intimately familiar with my personality. For example, I can't look someone directly in the eyes when speaking to them. It takes so much effort for me to direct my gaze towards someone's face, and keep it there, that I lose my train of thought when speaking, or fail to entirely comprehend the words spoken by the other person. An average person, unfamiliar with my "quirks," would likely take this as a sign that I'm tuning them out, or that I don't particularly care about the conversation, when the opposite is more likely to be the case.
It's more comfortable, and efficient, for many involved parties if I put my thoughts into text and allow the reader to assign to me their own non-verbal nuances and expressions in lieu of mine.
I should point out, too, that I don't actively engage in high-speed texting as we tend to identify it today, with cell phones, Blackberries, iPhones, etc. I tend to stick to emails and message boards, since I find that txt tlk is teh sux0rz lollolomfg!!!!!1!!1oneone. To me, it's counter-intuitive, as it tends to bring up its own unique set of communication difficulties.
