General Discussion / Literature Thread!
« on: July 19, 2009, 06:00:12 pm »
I haven't seen a thread like this around here, so i thought I'd go ahead and make one. Here's the place to talk about books you've read, books your reading, recommendations, reviews, all that stuff.

A few books I've just finished are;

Lullaby by Chuck Palahnuik.  This is the guy who wrote Fight Club, and outside of the realm of that book I'd never really read any of his work up until recently and I really regret it. Lullaby focuses around a poem called the "Culling Song", that when recited, kills the listener. The poem is published into a book of poems from around the world for children, and learning of this, a newspaper reporter, an underhanded real-estate saleswoman, a pseudo-hippie and her eco-terrorist boyfriend set out to destroy all copies of the book nationwide. After reading some of his other works, it's easy to see Palahnuik thrives off of the shock factor, more noticeable in his books Choke and Snuff, but still delivers a solid storytelling experience that's sure to keep pages turning. If you're into darkly comedic horror, this is right up your alley.

Call me a slowpoke, but I recently got through Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card after putting it off for years, and I have to say I can see why it's so highly acclaimed. Besides the protagonist being a bit of a Mary Sue, I fell in love with the book, and ended up finishing it in one sitting. If you haven't read this book, do so now.

After finishing Game, I went on to read its sequel, Speaker for the Dead, which honestly I found a little disappointing, but a good read nonetheless. The protagonist went from the slight Mary Sue in the first book to a huge, almost "perfect" fanfiction like character in this one, but oddly enough I still found myself hooked. I found it a little tough to wade through the beginning, because the book throws you into unfamiliar territory with unfamiliar characters and terminology you know nothing about (a pet peeve of mine, but maybe some others dig that kind of stuff), but it quickly grew on me and ended up being almost as memorable and entertaining as its predecessor.

As of now, I'm currently reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, by recommendation of my older brother. Being the only connection I had to Sinclair's work beforehand the movie Let There Be Blood, which I found fantastic, I was excited to get to see the actual literary work of the guy behind it. I'm not too far in, but I found the introduction pretty nice, a little over-descriptive at points but I was told it's with good purpose, so maybe I just have to keep at it.

With all that said and done, what's everyone else reading currently?

General Discussion / Eureka 7: Pocket Full of Rainbows
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:42:51 pm »
Anyone else seen it? It was released in Japan on DVD sometime in late April, I think. It's a movie giving an alternate universe kind of retelling of E7, so if you're a fan of the series I'd recommend it. I couldn't download the subbed version, so I ended up watching the raw and still found it pretty easy to follow save for having to wade through the moonspeak. I think the subbed release is around 4 gigs in size, so if your computer can handle that, go for it.

For those who've already watched and, or just fans of the series, what were/are your thoughts on it?

Also, literature general thread I suppose.

Chrono Compendium Discussion / I'm starting to think we over-analyze a lot.
« on: February 16, 2009, 03:04:44 pm »
Reviewing some of the articles here, some of the claims we've made in the past to try and fill up plotholes are just kind of ridiculous. Feel free to disagree with me, and don't misunderstand, I love this place to death, but I really feel like we've been over-analyzing too much, and thinking too much into the series.

Anybody else feel that way?

General Discussion / Tact's Portfolio Thread

Sup y'all. I've abandoned my DeviantART account in the days of late, but I've really grown a lot artistically since the last time I posted anything on the Compendium, so I'm making this thread to share my stuff with you guys, maybe get some constructive criticism from some of the more experienced artists here.

Anyway, here's something I drew today, very Springtime of Youth-y. More'll come in the days to follow.

General Discussion / Question about PSX emulators.
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:36:06 pm »
I'm currently playing Chrono Cross on ePSXe, running from the CDROM of my own disk. I would play on my PS2, but when I do it freezes at the exact same spot, even though everything else works fine. So the question is: Will playing on an emulator instead of a Playstation stop it from freezing? Thanks in advance.

I have Spring Break coming up in about a month and a half, and I just had an amazing idea. I'm going to play Chrono trigger nonstop for ans long as my body will allow it.

I will not break to sleep, eat, bathe, etc. I'll be running solely on caffiene, food, and will power. I'll play through the game as many times as I can and keep a video log, updating every 5 hours or so.

Any mental and/or physical health repercussions will be prepared for in the time coming to Spring Vacation.

I'm shooting for at least 5 days of nonstop gameplay.

Will this be earth shattering?

The answer is yes.

- Keep up and intensify my workout routine
- Finish Sophomore year with a GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Write a 30 page letter to SE explaining, in detail, the need of a new Chrono game
- Quit smoking for the love of god
- Pay more attention to my dog and take him out on daily walks
- Get involved in CC:DBT and the RP board once again

In celebration of the New Year, what are everyone else's resolutions?

General Discussion / Computer troubles.
« on: December 27, 2008, 09:58:38 pm »
My laptop is currently on the fritz, as I can not start it up due to it being stuck in an infernal loop of the following:

1)IBM startup screen
2)"Windows did not start succesfully ;last time, please select a configuration" screen
3)WIndows Startup screen
4)Blue screen telling me to run in safe mode

I've already tried safe mode, and I just get the same thing. I can get to my diagnostics but that's about it. Any advice?

General Discussion / Influential Compendium Members
« on: December 14, 2008, 07:27:30 pm »
Out of the lot of us, who here do you think affect others the greatest in a positive light?

My picks would be Zeality and Faustwolf, most likely. Zeality is the embodiment of the Springtime of Youth, and some of the things he's said I'm sure have inspired more than just myself to do things one normally wouldn't. Faust is also definitely a worthy mention, seeing his amazingly large effects on the fan community, and being the head of one of the largest fan creations I've seen in my entirety in the field.

What does everyone else think?

Has anyone else watched this amazing thing? It might be Gainax's best thing since FLCL or Evangelion.

Discuss.

Could Radical Dreamers somehow have taken place before Chrono Trigger?

Chrono Cross, as we know it, took place 20 years after Trigger and used Elements. Yet Radical Dreamers,  the very game is was based off of, had characters using magic just as those of Zeal had. If RD had taken place 20 years after CT, only 3 people would remain in 1000 AD who knew magic (Crono, Marle, & Lucca). Unless they had a method to transfer the ability of magic to others, there's no way RD Serge would have known how to cast a spell (as he says in the opening battle). Unless, of course, Magil/Magus taught him the ways of magic, but that's a low chance considering it's highly unlikely that out of anyone Serge would be able to use magic, as the Zealians did.

Obviously, RD takes place quite a time after 12,000 BC and the Ocean Palace incident given the remains of Zeal and Kid existing, and possibly after 600 AD considering the use of machinery. Perhaps somewhere along the lines of 800 to 900 AD, I think.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Dumb things said by teachers.
« on: October 16, 2008, 07:09:37 pm »
Have you ever been sitting in class, and heard your teacher or professor spout out something laughably inane? Here's a few gems I've had;

"Well, it's not like you see any negative letters." - AP Algebra II teacher, explaining why negative numbers "Don't Exist".

"Don't believe anything your friend's tell you, more than 3 beers WILL kill you." Fifth Grade D.A.R.E. Instructor.

"No, not good enough, go draw something else or you fail." Seventh Grade Art teacher, responding to my question as I pointed to a picture in the textbook.

"No, you can't use beige. Da Vinci only used primary colors, you should do fine." Another Seventh grade Art Teacher quote.

"Bisexuality is a myth. It's been proven impossible." Sex ED speaker last year, after I told her of my orientation.

"No, it's impossible for a comet to hit Earth. The atmosphere would erode it away" My current Physics teacher.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / The Chrono Series and School.
« on: October 09, 2008, 09:50:20 pm »
So far into my academic experience, I've managed to novelize Chrono Cross for an English project, Draw Chrono characters for god knows how many Art and AP Art assignments, use Termina as an example for a thriving economical city for a project in AP Human Geography, create comics using Chrono characters for elementary school assignments, write a response to literature journal entry on Radical Dreamers AND get my Lit. teacher to play (and enjoy) RD.

My question is, has anyone else created Chrono-influenced schoolwork?
