It's particularly notable for having nearly universal praise in all its aspects--story, gameplay, visuals, music, everything. The single "negative" point I've ever seen written about it is that the character models are low-res... and honestly, that doesn't even count. ;)

General Discussion / Vote to reboot Breath of Fire at Capcom
« on: May 26, 2011, 07:51:10 am »
http://www.capcom-europe.com/

First off, I have no idea how influential such a poll could possibly be. But as another poster said to me upon my skepticism: "it can't hurt".

Second, this is Capcom Europe, which adds further doubt. However, at the very least, you don't have to live in Europe to register and vote. I say it's worth a shot.

The poll is right in the middle on the home page under "Polls". You must register first. Accounts from other regions (like Capcom-Unity) don't work.

Currently Breath of Fire is behind Dino Crisis by a large margin (wtf?) but is in second place overall (out of 1100+ votes). So if you like RPGs, do yourself a favor and vote Breath of Fire!

I expect that Chrono fans should find themselves particularly sympathetic to BoF's plight; both it and Chrono are neglected franchises. So, a vote for Breath of Fire is a vote for Japanese RPGs.

General Discussion / Re: Synesthesia.
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:40:33 pm »
I'm not synesthetic, but one of my favorite composers is: Kouhei Tanaka. He's relatively well-known in Japan and has scored tons of anime and many games as well. Folks here may recognize him as the composer of the Sakurai Taisen series, Gunbuster anime, Resonance of Fate/End of Eternity, the old Paladin's Quest games, Alundra 1&2, and much much more. Some of my favorites of his:

That said, I'm quite interested in the art of synesthetes--particularly music. Anything you'd like to share Sajainta? :)

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Quick question about the OST
« on: April 10, 2011, 10:55:57 am »
Wow, thanks for your answers ^^ So, the track list given in-game is different from this list?
Check the discussion thread for the album:

To clarify, the English translations I put up are from the English game's Music box feature.

So the tracklist at that link is the one used in-game.

In short, no. No track names are significantly different. There seem to be some spelling/grammar adjustments, not much else.

General Discussion / Re: Xenoblade Localization Officially Announced!!

NoA also registered a web domain for Xenoblade. It's coming, relax.

Considering Xenoblade's near universal praise, it's going to be the JRPG of JRPGs, at least this generation.

General Discussion / Re: Secret of Mana Character Popularity Poll
« on: March 28, 2011, 12:01:09 am »
One of my favorite childhood memories is of playing Secret of Mana and eating the New Yorker pizza from Pizza Hut (a type of pizza they no longer make, and in my opinion the best pizza they've ever had).
Holy crap, someone else on the planet who can actually attest that the New Yorker ever existed. Yeah, it was the best pizza they've ever had. Actually, it's the only good pizza they've ever had. It must be close to a decade now since it disappeared?

General Discussion / Re: Secret of Mana Character Popularity Poll
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:22:47 am »
It's impressive you managed to catalogue the whole game's cast, major and minor. My top vote goes to the elementals--they're just so cool! I also have soft spots for Flammie, Mana Tree, and Neko. And Jema, resident badass? Every JRPG's gotta have 'em.

I loved this game, and have probably played it around 4-5 times. Everything about it was done right. It's shocking that Square hasn't ever replicated its brilliance (or the brilliance of SD3) and instead gone on to destroy the Mana franchise.

Secret of Mana will always remain one of the greatest (video game) works of art for two particular reasons. One, it has the greatest soundtrack of any SNES game; and easily one of the greatest game soundtracks ever.

Two, the art design is unfailingly beautiful at every turn. Square showed tremendous wisdom in its commissioning of concept works from famed artist Hiroo Isono. You won't find more naturalistic and beautiful concert art in any other video game, save for those illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. Isono's illustration of the mana tree (the title screen of SoM) and the jacket art for the SD3 soundtrack are some of the few pieces of art that have actually inspired me (a complete non-artist) to try and reproduce them. Needless to say, I failed ;)

It's a coincidence, really. In my last post I addressed the "notes" you hear--their just the leading tones in the chord progression. It's a common progression, and the modulation is common to Mitsuda's style.

*  The opening theme, "Scars of Time", contains a passage reminiscent of part of the opening theme for Trigger;
Where?

Quote
    * The theme for the Earth Dragon's Isle contains passages from the Lavos Core boss theme in Trigger which is perhaps a subtle hint as to the Dragons' ultimate fate;
That's a pretty big stretch. You're referring to the four chords that modulate and repeat. By including this passage as a "musical nod" you must believe Mitsuda consciously did this? It's a pretty simple progression, and the particular stepwise modulation used is pretty common in his music.

Quote
* The Dragon God's boss theme contains nods to the Millennial Fair theme from Trigger;
No.

Quote
* "Jellyfish Sea" contains a brief portion taken from "Epilogue" in ''Radical Dreamers";
I won't argue with you on this one because the slow, floating chords with an unquantized guitar melody is indeed similar in construction to Jellyfish Sea. However, this is more attributable to the composer's style, and there's nothing evident in either track to suggest one is a "nod" to another.

Yes, I was a bit blunt wasn't I. ;)

104 Field of Time -Home World- features the main theme of Chrono Trigger.
107 On the Shores of a Dream -Another World- features the main theme of Radical Dreamers.
115 Snakebone Mansion is a remake of the theme of Lynx's mansion from Radical Dreamers.
116 Victory -Gift of Spring- is a remake of Lucca's Theme from Chrono Trigger.
211 Chronomantique features the main theme of Chrono Trigger.
220 Gale is a remake of the battle theme from Radical Dreamers.
221 Victory -A Cry in Summer- is a remake of Lucca's Theme from Chrono Trigger.
306 The Girl Who Stole the Stars is a remake of Kid's theme from Radical Dreamers.
307 The Dream that Time Dreams features the both the main theme of Radical Dreamers and the main theme of Chrono Trigger.
310 Frozen Flame is a remake of the Frozen Flame theme from Radical Dreamers.

Hope that helps.

...but a whole ton that feature passages or musical nods to Trigger.
I disagree with this. There's very little beyond what I listed above that suggests even slight references to Trigger. You must be hearing things. :)

An update - The Assembly apparently passes the bill: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110225/ap_on_re_us/us_wisconsin_budget_unions

However, I am looking for better news sources since this one seems to be lacking something. It says that the Assembly Democrats had been filibustering the process but that the Republicans pushed through a vote. If this was a true filibuster, then it seems like that "vote" (which seems to have been clearly premeditated, as it was surprising enough that not all the Democrats had a chance to respond, while it doesn't seem the Republicans had a similar problem) could not have been brought about with due procedures. More information on what actually happened would be good.
Well, it's difficult to explain. Basically, after hours of debate over amendments to the bill well, around 1 AM this morning the majority leader called a surprise vote on the bill and it was passed within seconds. It took most by surprise, hence why so many votes didn't even make it in. It was intentional, and probably illegal. There will be more to say on the issue once they figure it out.

Furthermore, the bill isn't final till the senate votes on it. And they can't without the 14 democratic senators who are still out-of-state.
