Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Armageddon arm and a Dragon tear = fun
« on: December 01, 2008, 01:01:39 am »
so I've been playing New game + with Robo equipped with his Armageddon Arm and a Dragon Tear to boost critical hits. So far, he's ended fights with Slash and Flea, Masamune, Lavos (on several occasions), and even Ozzie sorta. (he no longer counterattacks and can't be selected as a target). But most recently was the funniest.
Magus and Frog have this long-winded dialogue before the fight with Magus... then as soon as the fight starts, I wait for Robo, select him, have him attack Magus, and he jumps on Magus with a FALCON PAWWWWNCH... INSTANTLY ENDING THE FIGHT!
Shortest. Magus fight. Ever.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Magus: Humans didn't know what he looked like?
« on: November 26, 2008, 12:49:22 am »
If you put Magus in your party, you'll probably notice that nobody in 600 AD does so much as even look at him funny, save for mystics perhaps (and I will continue to call them mystics!). Walk right on into the castle with him sometime.
I'd imagine other people might have come to this conclusion too, but I think the reason for his lack of attention could possibly be that nobody knew it was him to begin with. The only likeness of him you see in that era is a statue tucked way deep into the cathedral, which most people either will never find (secret door) or will be too scared of venturing that far. Magus probably struck by night, if ever. And people generally would not see Magus and live to tell about it. (or at least talk much of it if they really aren't comfortable... ...gleeeeennn...) So, if Magus walks casually into the castle, as long as Crono or Lucca or someone is with him, nobody thinks anything of it. "Oh, another friend of Crono's." Let's go hit up the inn!

History, Locations, and Artifacts / Was Zealian blue hair dyed?
« on: November 24, 2008, 11:24:24 pm »
Apparently, there's a version of Chrono Trigger where someone in Zeal tells you that the royal family dyes their hair blue as a status symbol. Can anyone confirm this? and it may explain something about Schala's hair in Chrono Cross.

General Discussion / Okkusenman and Chrono Trigger
« on: July 26, 2008, 01:03:13 am »
Has anyone heard about the Okkusenman craze in Japan? I found out thanks to the magic of youtube... basically, if you're familiar with the Mega Man games, specifically Mega Man 2, you know about the hype surrounding Doctor Wily's first fortress theme. it's been dubbed one of the greatest tunes in the series by some. apparently, it was good enough that it became the melody of this song, Okkusenman.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yATI48dcsMU
nevermind the fact that the guy singing sounds really REALLY funny. The reason I bring it up is because if you look at the English subtitles, you'll know what the song is really all about: a poor guy who once had a good group of friends that he'd do anything with, a group that he got the courage of today from, and now he's grown up and they've all split. He misses those days, when he'd do stuff with his friends and make memories... that's all he has now is memories.
Just about everyone can think of a similar situation of some sort for themselves. A time they wish they could go back to, friends they'd like to see again, groups they'd like to reunite... for sake of ease, I've dubbed them "okkusenman" moments. I've got a couple myself, what with church youth group back in '01 and '02. I've grown up though, as have they, and we've had to split up, but if I could do it all again, I would. That's an okkusenman moment.
...One of the great things about Chrono Trigger is that it makes a large use of that. Generating the group of young people that take back memories and wishes to do it all again and see all their old friends. Chrono Cross abuses this principle, openly lamenting in the narrative about how he misses those days the game takes place in...
...what's really kind of weird and funny? This has had the same effect on the Dream Team. If you pay attention to interviews, the dream team got pretty close, and they all seem to miss working together on the series. You might even say they parallel the characters in their own RPG!
anyone else have moments like this? I think it's kind of cool, and perhaps one of the reasons we still enjoy the game. A person can get past it being "just a game", and assume an endearing friendship with the characters, then never get over having to split up with them. So, they play it through again... and again....

Chrono Compendium Discussion / To vent that sense of humor and break ice with the guy next to you...
« on: December 24, 2007, 01:45:31 am »
Have you considered a spam forum? It doesn't have to be one full of forum games like "avatar above you" or something, it could just be a place to make forum posting tests and experiments, or for anyone to make stupid hilarious threads about nothing. At PureZC, a major resource site for Zelda Classic (Zelda 1 editor), we use a forum like this mostly for showing off bizarre, hilarious humor (which quite a few people here have, I know.) Said place still keeps rules of conduct against inappropriate content, flaming, etc. but rules regarding spam, double posts, etc. are all waived. Nobody gains any post count by posting in it either, so it's no fast pass to anything.

Kajar Laboratories / *Explosion and loud clanging noises

*comes out of the lab/garage, covered in suite.
Yes, well... over the course of the last few days, I started something that was brewing in my head for awhile... It started one day when I was thinking about Lavos shell and his weakness... then it hit me: Lavos would make an excellent boss in a shootemup! Then I started tooling with the idea of piloting the Epoch, and making powerups different characters...
=Chrono Beat=
So far it isn't much. One stage, three weak kinds of enemies, and four out of seven powerups. Still, the powerups have some interesting effects. check it out.

Captain B, from order of the black wind. Sad sign of the times, it seems a lot of Chrono Trigger sites are dying out.
...what's to say? I'm 21 years of age, currently persuing an associates in Graphic design. I rarely do any fanart anymore, unless it involves Zelda, and even then it probably isn't anything you would recognize. (I draw from the first two games, released back in the 80's.) I do have some (a lot) Chrono Trigger content in old storage, but it is all preliminary line images, quickly cheaply doodled (and done back in high school.)
As for me and Chrono Trigger? Well, one Christmas, we were picking out SNES games at Toys R Us. My brother picked out Chrono Trigger (which I'd read about in Nintendo Power with little interest), while I picked out... (sigh) ...Power Rangers Zeo Battle Racers.
Needless to say, one of those games didn't last too long before we started using it as a cutting board, and it wasn't CT. I was actually playing my brother's game more than my own, and I was liking it. To this day, CT remains one of the only strategical-type RPG's I'll actually play, along with Pokemon blue and Super Mario RPG.
I'll check this place out for awhile, see how it is. not much going on at OBW, really.
