I thought I'd swing by and drop this information.

Atlus USA has announced a DS RPG that involves time travel and "channels the heart and soul of fan-favorite 16-bit RPG classics."  I can only think of one fan-favorite 16-bit RPG classic that involves time travel, which is why I'm bringing the news here, as Square-Enix is unlikely to give us a Chrono sequel (and I doubt it'd be satisfying, even if they did).

The release date is February 22, 2011, the trailer is here.

I can't guarantee that it'll be Chrono-like in the least, but those of you adventurous enough to give it a try should do so.  Even if it isn't Chrono-like at all, the premise looks interesting enough for a go.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Elaine and the Statutory Rapist

Quote from: Ted Woolsey
ELAINE: I guess he's forgotten me.
I think this is the main reason I concluded that Elaine and Fritz were going out.  This doesn't seem like something a sister would say.

Thankfully, the Compendium retranslation cleared it up:

Quote from: Compendium Retranslation
Elaine: He...... Fritz is away on a journey, and
hasn't come back......
Yet if he were here, I wouldn't need anything
else......
The liner notes suggest that 彼 could also mean "My boyfriend" as well as "He."  It's not exactly an outright declaration, but it seems to be enough evidence for me.

Case closed, I guess.  Thanks for the feedback. :)

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Elaine and the Statutory Rapist
« on: February 04, 2010, 01:58:19 pm »
Way back on early drafts of "Unofficial Chrono Trigger 2," I had assumed that Elaine and Fritz were fiancees, and so wrote them as married.  However, in my recent game of Chrono Trigger for the DS, I can't find any cues that would indicate that they're betrothed: in fact, since the Truce item store is family-owned, they may be siblings.

Can anyone provide any concrete evidence for one or the other interpretation, be it from the Woolsey translation, the on-site Retranslation, or the DS translation?

I actually wasn't aware of this CD until I stumbled on this thread, during a recent spate of lurking.

Glad I did, though, since it has a lot of the songs from quite a few of Mitsuda's works that I liked, as well as a sampling of the more recent stuff I haven't heard yet.  Bought it from Play Asia, so it should come to me in a week or two. :)

I personally loved how difficult the alpha was, but with difficulty rebalancing it would have been accessible, difficulty-wise, to a wider variety of gamers. The Chrono games have always been known to be kind of on the easy side I think. At the end of development CE was shaping up to be very challenging, but not bite-your-controller challenging.
It's been so long since I've last seen footage from CE (the association is something I've forgotten, I was getting massive deja vu as I watched the vids), but I do remember the beast fights being rather tough.

Yeah, I'm very fond of challenge, myself.  I'm also one of those who thought (and moreso as time went on) that CT was too easy, so any increase in challenge was welcome to me. :)

I'm definitely subscribing to this channel.  Regardless of whether there's a leak or not, it's best to see the closest-to-final product rather than some buggy, incomplete alpha version.  Obviously, the CE team feels the same way.

It's a shame I won't be able to play it.  I've heard that the game was deliciously hard... but, c'est la vie...

At I can check out the story that you guys have put together.

General Discussion / Re: Star Trek
« on: May 11, 2009, 11:43:43 pm »
Trek had fallen out of favor with me for quite some time... about the last decade.  First Contact was the last decent movie, and even then, I didn't really like it.  After that, things went downhill with both the movies and television series (DS9 being the last decent series, in my opinion).  In any case, I had gotten tired of the pseudo-intellectualism, pontificating, and clear lack of anything that resembled subtlety.

So, when I heard that this re-imagining was coming out, I was excited.  I hoped that this would revitalize sci-fi in the American mainstream, 'cuz without it, there's no interest in space.

Last night, I watched it and it blew me away.  I would've been happy if the movie simply didn't suck, but it went past that and became a truly enjoyable experience.  To put it another way, the two hours I sat in the theater felt more like one: that's the mark of a fun movie.  The action was intense, the characters well-written and likable, and the tech was fun to see.

Really, I have no complaints.  I'm just happy to see Trek beginning its rebirth.

Hear, hear!!

Thank you for sharing this and reminding us all that we must walk on toward tomorrow!

Haha, no... Square-Enix never touched us 'cuz we've never shown definite signs of progress. :?

I haven't made any real updates because I don't want to talk much about it until I've got something to show for it, to make up for all of those updates we made that were a bit on the overblown side.  One thing I do want to say is that I've drastically collapsed the story into something much more manageable for me and less stupidly ambitious.

Essentially, I'm trying to create a dual-track story for which both parts are necessary.  This is a sort of writing experiment for me, while trying to apply everything I've learned.

I've also selected UCT2 as my subject for my Computer Science capstone.  Whether that leads to anything is a completely separate matter.

Actually, this reminds me a lot of George Carlin's justification of sun worship. :P

Beautiful.

Excessively nerdy, but beautiful.

Yeah, that's right.

Site Updates / Re: Arena feature and Japan release date revealed

Huh... the extra dungeons remind me of Soul of Chaos, more than anything else.  Y'know, that sort of hodgepodge of minigames within a dungeon.

Of course, I say that because Soul of Chaos was the only one I've delved deeply into, before I got bored enough with FFI to move on.  I'm currently dealing with the Sealed Temple of FFV Advance, which is shaping up to be the same sort of thing (capture a Behemoth...?  What the hell?!)

Looks like the sort of thing Square does with reissues, these days.

I must admit I didn't see the monster arena coming... then again, it's not really a surprise, either.

History, Locations, and Artifacts / Re: Fall of Guardia / Viper
« on: September 20, 2008, 11:11:29 pm »
A government can fall while the nation still technically exists.  So, if Porre goes up and just abolishes the monarchy, that doesn't mean that the Guardian territory must be absorbed.  They could just install a pro-Porrean government, a rather common occurrence in situations like this.

So, Guardia can fall and still exist immediately afterward.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: A note on Miguel...
« on: September 20, 2008, 09:27:21 pm »
Unless I'm mistaken, and it's been awhile:

Crono is left-handed.
Miguel is right-handed.

Even if Crono went incognito to El Nido, there's no reason for him to change his dominant hand, especially since he never pulled the "There's something I haven't told you: I'm not right-handed, either!" gambit during his battle against Serge.

Besides, the people of El Nido are sometimes quite xenophobic.  If Miguel and Leena were foreigners, somebody would've said so.
