Chrono Compendium Discussion / Re: Compendium Pages Disappearing
« on: January 01, 2019, 04:51:50 pm »
It's been a completely random issue for me. Sometimes I'll click a link and be fine, go back to look at something else, come back to the first link and it goes 404.

I figured there were some mass edits going on or something, but since I haven't been around in years I got no clue.

Super hyped but I can't get it to work on my comp. Any troubleshooters?

I was discussing with my husb about how that setting would end up looking, a B-villain from a technologically and magically advanced time picking a random RPG village to turn into an empire with limited resources and a blatantly evil social movement

...and we realized that's the entire plot of Mother 3.

Ultimately I'm sure she is just a character made for the story like the rest, but I'm all about streamlining stuff and think that's a good place to put her if there's a Save Guardia plot

It's a tenuous connection at best, tbh. I think it was that she cast healing magic in the same prayer pose Marle uses, was unusually kind to the crew, and knew about Kid and who/what she really was. Gil actually hides during the scene she's in and helps Kid escape at the end so they're not captured by Porre, so that throws a wrench into the theory unless there's something EVEN MORE COMPLICATED going on.

Having her be Zeal would be interesting for it's own reasons, but I didn't get that vibe from her.

Oh yeah, if we didn't still like Cross for one reason or another we probably wouldn't even BE here.

Epoch is a good standby, but since she'd be the Chancellor of Magic for Porre, and specifically shown seeking time-travel adjacent artifacts like The Frozen Flame, and if she stilll has her OG pendant (since Kid doesn't have Schala's in RD), she's got more than enough resources to build a simple and stable loop.

Trigger's cast wasn't "deep" in the traditional sense, but it worked because of the dynamics between each other and the rest of the world. I compare them to characters from One Piece a lot, where they do each have a back story, arcs, clear desires and such, and you can picture what each character would do in different situations, but the main enjoyment comes from watching them as a team more than "THIS CHARACTER IS SO REAL".

Cross's characters are literally meant to be interchangeable in any given situation through the course of the game. So even if there's a character you like before they join your party, or an inkling of depth, they do hardly anything to differentiate themselves after that, and because you can only have 3 at a time most of them are like accessories you can't throw away.

So even if the PREMISE of certain Cross characters are more interesting than those of the Trigger cast, they're realized very poorly in the game itself.

I think the general consensus around here is that Vera from Radical Dreamers is Marle doing some infiltration coup stuff, but what's your favorite explanation for "why she so old tho"?

I figured some kind of magical disguise made sense, but my husb likes the "Bill and Ted" style option of Marie's future grandma type self going back in time to fix shit and help the Radical Dreamers out

That aside, it's really aesthetically beautiful even today, and a good half of the characters I really liked/wished they were more fleshed out, or even just used as archetypes for characters in modern games/comics/etc. Like if games latched onto Macha or Sprigg as a stock character type, that would be awesome.

But it is bizarre to me that games from that era are judged on a completely different scale than anything made before or after. It's fine to like it, but to say the problems don't matter at all is... weird.

I wish that when Square made remakes and rereleases and such, that they had focused on rangling in Cross's plot instead of making Trigger's more convoluted to suit it. Being dark or different isn't the main problem (RD is nice) but making you wanna throw your hands up in frustration trying to understand or explain it.

Can't remember if I said this theory already, but I figured the Ruby Knife was originally meant to be for Janus. It fits with it being the brother(s) of Schala's pendant, also meant to control the Mammon Machine/interact with Lavos, how it can be used for good or evil depending on the wielder's will, why its called "The Demon Sword" in both sequels, the whole Wind association, and why Magus used a seemingly useless RED!!! scythe to try and beat Lavos at the Ocean Palace.

General Discussion / Re: Schala's Last Scene, Memory Corrupted?
« on: January 02, 2018, 12:56:51 am »
There wasn't visible rubble, but it's not strange to think she could/should have died, since she was in the same room as the Mammon Machine and it was pretty banged up after that scene.

Interesting to note that every time Lavos' theme plays in the DS version, it's the full version with this interlude.

I feel kind of relieved hearing it's not usually played, because I only actually heard the full version a few years ago when I downloaded the soundtrack.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Magus/Masamune connection
« on: July 12, 2017, 12:52:16 am »
I think that Janus could have been intended to be the original "wielder" of the Masamune. It makes sense given that Schala had Doreen, that their respective brothers would be meant for each other, too. When he was approaching Schala et al in the original timeline flashback, he could have had the red knife (essentially taking Crono's place), or Melchior decided last minute not to put that responsibility on him.

This also makes the moral ambiguity of the Masamune in RD and CC make a little more sense, imo.
