General Discussion / Re: Anime Suggestions Thread
« on: April 30, 2011, 05:48:26 pm »
Okay, fine, I guess there aren't a lot of fellow fans around here. It's Neon Genesis Evangelion - the anime that redefined anime, and understandably so. Fascinating plotting, perfect pacing, great characters, provocative themes and unforgettable imagery - it has everything I could ever want from an anime series, and is quite likely the reason I'm still an anime fan today. Be warned, though, that by the end it gets extremely dark, introspective and mind-screwy, so I hope you like that sort of thing. (If you like Chrono Cross and Xenogears, then you probably will.)

Rurouni Kenshin is also gooood stuff, although I vastly prefer the manga to the anime (the TV anime, at least - the OVAs are fantastic) and there's word of a new anime coming down the line. But really, aside from broadly recommending "the classics" (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ranma 1/2, Evangelion, Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc.) it's kind of hard to make specific suggestions without knowing what exactly you look for in anime/film/fiction.

Polling / Re: If you could change Chrono Cross, how would you do it?
« on: April 24, 2011, 05:15:41 pm »
Why isn't this a multi-choice poll? Personally I would vote for "Increase difficulty" (let's face it, Cross is even more of a pushover than Trigger) and "Other" - "Other", in this case, being "Give it another 2 years in development", which I think would pretty much solve every major problem it has and help bring the things it does halfway-right to their fullest potential - specifically, make the game big and long enough to properly accommodate all the plot elements that ended up being crammed into the last couple hours.

My Steam and PSN names are the same as here. My Brawl code is... shit, I don't know, I'll fetch it later.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Quick question about the OST
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:44:59 am »
If you're referring to the track names given in the in-game Sound Test on the DS version of Chrono Trigger, yes, Tom Slattery translated a few track names differently than the commonly held translations. The most significant of these that I can recall is the changing of the end credits track, "To Faraway Times", to "Outskirts of Time".

I'm guessing it has to do with Square Enix's Game Archives, i.e. PSN re-releases. See here: http://www.siliconera.com/2011/04/04/chrono-cross-still-sailing-to-game-archives-in-japan/

General Discussion / Re: Video Game Discussion Thread

I have finished Radiant Historia and I'd love to buy a 3ds to make it look even better
You might not want to do that, as from what I understand due to the differing screen resolutions between the two systems DS games tend to look significantly worse when played on the 3DS.

General Discussion / Re: Xenoblade Localization Officially Announced!!
« on: April 04, 2011, 02:20:39 pm »
I think the odds are higher than ever that Xenoblade will come to the US (and will most likely be announced at E3) but that doesn't make this particular announcement any less maddening.

Also, Xenoblade Chronicles?? "Chronicles" is one of those words that's become horribly abused by the video game industry, kind of like "Heroes" or "Adventure(s)". When you see the word "Chronicles" attached to a game title, it might as well be "Second-Rate Video Game Spinoff". I think Xenoblade deserves better.

@FaustWolf: I heard rumors that Xenoblade has a secret Xenogears connection; I don't know how truthful they are, though.

...for... Europe. Alright, now Nintendo is officially screwing with me.

Where?
At 1:32.

That's a pretty big stretch. You're referring to the four chords that modulate and repeat. By including this passage as a "musical nod" you must believe Mitsuda consciously did this? It's a pretty simple progression, and the particular stepwise modulation used is pretty common in his music.
It really isn't a big stretch at all. Listen to the Lavos Core boss theme from Trigger, then immediately listen to the Earth Dragn Isle theme from Cross. I think you'll hear the similarities.

No.
Yes. Again, listen to both pieces, one right after the other. "Dragon God" has a signature of roughly 20 notes from the beginning of "Millenial Fair", though some are shifted to minor pitch.

However, this is more attributable to the composer's style, and there's nothing evident in either track to suggest one is a "nod" to another.
There's style, and then there's self-homage. I can assure you that the listed songs in Chrono Cross fall into the latter category. Though if you want clarification directly from the source, why not bring it up on the "Questions for Mitsuda" thread?

...well, in Japan anyway. But it'll probably make its way over here sooner or later. Good news for anybody pining for the Woolsey translation or the ability to play it on the big screen, as God intended.

I can't think of any reason not to mention Radical Dreamers. I mean, it's a game. He worked on it.

Personally I'd wait for a response before sending in all the questions. It's a lot as is. Also, of the three closing statements I would definitely go with the first one; the other two might come off as a bit pushy.

44
I disagree with this. There's very little beyond what I listed above that suggests even slight references to Trigger. You must be hearing things. :)

Check out the "Musical Nod" entry under this page: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChronoCross
Compiled by yours truly.

Do you want to know which songs are direct remakes of Chrono Trigger songs, or do you want to know which songs feature reprises/homages of Chrono Trigger songs? Because there are only a couple songs that are outright remakes, but a whole ton that feature passages or musical nods to Trigger.
