The year of 2014 is nearing its end, and the last of the remaining holidays are fast approaching. As we forever wait for Crono to rise from the ruins of Guardia, we should follow Guile's lead and continue searching for our own new enigmas. Perhaps some of you are in the process of solving them! In any case, I hope you all are striving to better yourselves and the world with each passing day. Before I delve into a wonderful tribute to Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross from a live concert, I would like to share some information I recently found (in case anyone may not have heard) about the fate of Chrono Trigger 2 from PAX Prime 2014.

A very special thanks go to GameFAQs user W_Mark_Felt_Sr who I credit for sharing this information. During one of the many PAX Prime panels, Hironobu Sakaguchi shed some light on trying to make Chrono Trigger 2 possible, and his efforts to push the Chrono name forward with a series like Final Fantasy.

You can watch the full feature below this paragraph. The Chrono-related content can be found at time index 12:22 of the video. However, I highly recommend watching everything in its entirety if you have the free time (or watch it in small portions). I personally found it to be an excellent view. Sakaguchi talks about the most prominent and influential RPGs spanning the past 30 years. Also, you can watch the video here on Twitch for better quality.

Moving forward...

I had the privilege to attend a Video Games Live (VGL) concert in Rochester, NY (USA) on November 21st, and it was an experience I will never forget. For those of you who may not know about this incredible experience, I would invite you to check out their official website here and to read up on Tommy Tallarico, the creator of Video Games Live.

Additionally, I will quote a portion of background info taken directly from their general "About" page:
Quote
"Video Games Live™ is an immersive concert event featuring music from the most popular video games of all time. Top orchestras & choirs perform along with exclusive video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, solo performers, electronic percussionists, live action and unique interactive segments to create an explosive entertainment experience!"

The event took place at the Eastman Theatre; named after George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak. I took the liberty of scanning the program for those interested in learning more about the venue and people involved:

If you hover over any of the images from Photobucket, javascript should display a zoom option if you need. I also took additional pictures from inside the theatre so you can check out the surroundings and stage setup:

This was VGL's 301st concert, and they had just recently performed in Budapest, Hungary. Their visit to my hometown was a first, and I was pleased to have been there in person. One of my main motivations for going was to hear music from Chrono Trigger and Cross that had been reported by others who had attended live performances from around the world. Overall, they performed a wide range of diverse music spanning more than 30 years of video game history. Before and during the live performance (between songs), they added humorous skits (sometimes with dubbed voices) that you would normally see on YouTube or meme sites from classic or current video games. Below is a picture I took featuring scenes from Super Mario World before the live performance began:

You can watch the actual video they used here.

The concert was divided into two acts with an intermission. The first act included music from Castlevania, Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 5, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Journey, God of War, and Cave Story, to name a few. Additionally, they performed an amazing choir rendition of Liberi Fatali, one of the main themes of Final Fantasy VIII.

One of the "interactive" performances in the first act included Tommy selecting a random concert-goer from the audience to play Space Invaders, while the orchestra played in the background to mimic his every movements as the in-game timer counted down.

As the first act came to its conclusion, a very clever mock "Loading" screen popped up, essentially counting down/loading up the next portion of the concert. This was the scene during the intermission:

The second act began with a Codec call from Solid Snake (David Hayter), personally addressing the audience to make some noise so he could hear them. He then told them get ready for the next act in the performance. Music from the second act featured scores from even more amazing titles such as Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, Mass Effect, Street Fighter II, and Final Fantasy VI, which consisted of the opera scene. What was great about this sequence was that the vocalist, Jillian Aversa, cosplayed as Celes (Maria). The second act ended with a truly unique Tetris opera, which can be viewed here. One interesting fact about Jillian is that she was one of the founding members that made OC Remix possible.

Now, I was totally blown away by the music and talent. I did not want the event to end. The audience applauded, stood, the orchestra stood and bowed their heads, the stars of the show bowed, and then moved off stage. Everything went black. The concert really was over, and I was told by several sources that the event would feature music from each Chrono game during the performance. At the end, I felt really bad, but it was still a memorable experience. Then, all of a sudden, a classic "Continue" countdown screen popped up. At this point, several audience members had begun to leave, as is the standard at most concerts for those who want to beat the human and vehicle traffic departing the area. The counter began to slowly count down from 10...then 9...8...7... and the audience was growing ecstatic. They began to shout "YES!!!" and an individual somewhere shouted "Someone push start!!" Before the counter had almost reached zero, the screen went black, and Tommy came back out on stage. The suspense in the audience had eased, and Tommy asked if we wanted an encore. We shouted every verbal form of approval, and he proceeded to say that they would be treating us to one of his favorite songs, performed on his third Video Games Live album. That game was Chrono Trigger. The audience erupted with applause and shouts of joy. They began to play the intro jingle, followed by the main theme of 600AD, and ending with Frog's theme. I was in tears after they started playing the music of 600AD... just to be there, in that moment, hearing the music of one of my favorite video games of all time in a concert setting usually reserved for classical compositions and live ballets... words simply had no meaning. Only raw emotion ruled the air. They immediately jumped to Chrono Cross, and the audience once again voiced their approval. The entire opening FMV (Scars of Time) was performed, and Tommy was jamming on his guitar with such fervor. I managed to dig up a couple good links for you all to check out:

Here's a good reference at what the live-event was like.

A closer look at just Chrono Cross, from a different venue.

And just the music without any live footage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x33RbKZXUP0

As I looked around at this joyful gathering, I noticed a good majority of the cheers were coming from the younger audience members. Then I started to think... hope for the future. There is already a new and fresh generation of young adults and kids who know the Chrono name. Those jubilant expressions I witnessed were not just aimed at the great music, but what the music stood for. More importantly, I saw a connected community of human beings from every demographic in peaceful harmony. Given recent national news in my country within the past several days, this concert had banished all of that unsettling imagery and conflict, much like Yuna's song in the Thunder Plains in Final Fantasy X-2 as it eased tension among the New Yevon and Youth League members in order to unite the people of Spira. I went home that night with a smile on my face that lasted well into the next day.

Video Games Live is an event everyone should try to see, and if it comes to a location near you, I highly recommend attending to support your local orchestra and to hear some excellent video game music. You can check their updating tour dates here.

I have been very troubled with the lack of Chrono news and activity here, especially from several failed attempts at contacting the organizations in the past. But the concert gave me renewed assurance that we will see the likes of Chrono/Serge and company once again. The cogs of fate are in constant motion. The fanbase we help to represent will never disappear, and it is still very much alive. Dalton is going to show his face again, so I want you all to be ready, even more prepared for those of you still waiting for the news we all want to here. The Chrono name will never die out, and as Guile states at the end of Cross, "Let us toast, in hopes that our paths may cross again...!"

With that, I leave you with one of my favorite tracks from Final Fantasy X HD Remaster :

Chrono News / Video Games LIVE concert featured music from CT/CC
« on: June 22, 2014, 04:46:55 pm »
This is over 10 days old... but if someone would like to archive this, or if we have an area where we archive news like this and/or a kind soul would like to point me in that direction...

Anywho...

There was a Video Games Live concert in LA, California during E3 2014, and they supposedly had music from both CT and CC

First things first... greetings to my fellow Compendium folk!

Yet another mention of Chrono Trigger was asked in a very recent Final Fantasy XIII-2 interview. This time with producer Yoshinori Kitase.

http://www.oxm.co.uk/36521/interviews/final-fantasy-xiii-2-remaking-ff7-kinect-rpgs-and-killing-the-girly-feel/

The interview as a whole is actually quite interesting, but skip to the very last question on page 3

I am curious to know what your reactions were to Kitase's response.

(Note to mod: Feel free to edit in any way if news worthy)

In a recent interview with game director Motomu Toriyama, he explains the time traveling theme of Final Fantasy XIII-2, the sequel to last years Final Fantasy XIII.

https://member.eu.square-enix.com/en/blogs/we-discuss-time-travel-with-final-fantasy-xiii-2s-Motomu-Toriyama

Fast forward to the seventh question:

Jem Alexander: This is the first time time travel has featured so prominently in a FINAL FANTASY game, is this something you'd like to explore more in future games?

Motomu Toriyama: For the FINAL FANTASY series, each game has its own new game system, so it is not as if we are intending on making time travel key to all future instalments. We want fans to look forward to each FINAL FANTASY having its own unique system. For FINAL FANTASY XIII-2, we are experimenting with carrying out repeated large scale user tests to reflect the opinions of users in the game itself. We really have received a lot of feedback about the game, but among the voices there are those who say it reminds them of the classic RPG, CHRONO TRIGGER. For FINAL FANTASY XIII-2, we are aiming to make time travel a major thematic direction, and be able to express this on high-end game machines.

[hidden]The seventh question is extremely juicy... perhaps us fans have done something after all? Could this rekindle our series? A lot of speculation is floating around about this being the spirtual successor to Chrono Trigger, and I just saw a slew of new forums posters everywhere, whom I have never seen before, starting to post wanting to know more information, most likely in part to hearing about the "time travel" and "Chrono Trigger".[/hidden]

Welcome / Birthday / Seeya! Forum / Can it really be that day again?
« on: December 22, 2010, 06:11:20 pm »
Unbelievable.

Today is the day of my 24th year on this planet (I have turned 23).

Still no new Chrono game, but several ports... even my activity here has plummeted greatly since years past. I do however still check it every now and then, but my participation has waned.

Even though it's my birthday, I want to give a shout-out to everyone who continues to support this fan site. It is the best, and nothing else comes close. I want to thank Zeality and the other founding fathers, as well as those daily members who contribute to the health of the site.

In about an hour we'll leave for some Chinese dinner, and then the cycle shall repeat itself, once again, after the day has finished.

General Discussion / so TGS is right around the corner...
« on: September 07, 2010, 04:23:05 am »
I hear there are several unannounced titles from SE that will be getting introduced before Versus & Agito XIII...

What is the probability that SE drops the Chrono nuke? Is it safe to say the audience attending has a better chance of getting rick-rolled on the big screen?

Anyone hear about this? It is a pretty cool read regardless. I for one love the fact that 65.5 million years ago, gigantic creatures roamed this planet. We need a Jurassic Park damnit!

There is a reason for this post in relation to the Compendium and Chrono.

After you have fully read it, check about 3 comments down at the user named "Sky"

General Discussion / Sarah Palin's book tour at my home town...
« on: November 20, 2009, 08:03:08 pm »
Well, tomorrow, roughly around 6pm, Palin will be making her one and only New York book tour stop. The location is none other than a bookstore only 20 minutes away from me in upstate New York. Again, this is the only location in New York where she's stopping at.

I am still deciding whether to go or not. There is still time. What I have to do is buy her book at the location (around $30ish), present the receipt to the employees working the morning shift when the store opens (around 9am), and obtain a special wristband that is the admittance to see Palin face-to-face, where she can sign your book, smile at you, and possibly shake your hand. Now, the bookstore is only giving out 1,000 wristbands to first-come-first-serve people who arrive (or camp/sleep in their cars) until 9am. Given the information here, proceed onward.

My question(s): Is it worth it? Is it worth possibly the whole day of Saturday on this potential, and possible, yet meager endeavor? Should I attempt to seize the moment and "once in a lifetime" opportunity?

The situation is sound, right? Stuff like this do not come often. I'd have to stand with all those people too. Could it be a healthy experience though? I have never done anything like this before.

Any helpful suggestions? Positive or negative? Am I wasting my time with it all?

EDIT: Bill Cosby is also coming to my area in a few weeks. yay or nay?

I have recently began CC again to fill in my Spring Break until I have to go back to the University in a couple weeks.

For the first time, I rejected Kid on every occasion and was able to get Leena, Glenn, and Macha (plus more frames I missed on my playthroughs many years ago)!! Since I am using New Game+, enemies are no problem - Serge has a Spectral Swallow and I gave Pierre the Slasher (these are my heavy hitters) from my previous playthroughs. NOW... I finished clearing the fog and Ghost Ship from the Sea to get to Mount Pyre, but do I have to go back to Guldove to get Kid and Doc? OR can I advance up Mount Pyre and keep healing the lava HP drain to face the Devas and enter Fort Dragonia (without also getting aide from the Water Dragon)...? I know I'll have to get Kid eventually, but when do I have to make that pit-stop?

*phew*!!!! Once answered, I'll remove this topic, but I am just dying to know... as I have never played these particular paths before and I am hitting the hay now to pick it up sometime in the new day (I had a hard time rejecting Kid... LOL!!!!). :picardno

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Your "Chrono" collection?
« on: January 06, 2009, 03:23:15 pm »
This is a thread where everyone can post pictures of their "Chrono" related merchandise. They do not necessarily have to be pictures! A simple post of your personal (Chrono) items that you have obtained throughout the years is perfectly fine. Any item that ranges from the official game products, to the official soundtrack releases, and/or any knick-knacks found that you have bought or received. Again, anything "Chrono" related that you would like to share with the Compendium is encouraged!

So how about it? What does YOUR "Chrono" collection consist of?

--------

Below are direct links to different pictures of my current collection...

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q3/GUILE22/100_1367.jpg

I have the original Super Famicom Chrono Trigger imported directly from Japan, Final Fantasy Chronicles, Chrono Cross, and yes... I have the new Chrono Trigger DS which was released back in November. It is still sealed with some kind of poster inside. I was just able to get my hands on the DS version as of a couple days ago. I do not have a Nintendo DS nor do I plan on getting one.

I have supported the prospect of a new Chrono game. Have you?

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Black Omen - Queen Zeal
« on: January 05, 2009, 02:57:53 pm »
I am ready for the Black Omen on my current PS1 CT playthrough (since I do not have CT DS).

I read in the Encyclopedia that you can get 3 Prism Dresses and 3 Prism Helms from the Zeal Hands by first going to 1000A.D. - then by going to 600A.D. - and then to 12000B.C. to face Queen Zeal 3 times but warping back after you defeat the Lavos outter shell. My question is... could I start at 2300A.D. in the Black Omen and work my way backwards to get 4 Prism Dresses and 4 Prism Helms?

(Right now I am currently farming to LV.99 at Geno Dome's 5 part conveyor belt which gives 8200 EXP each run... repeating by going back down the Dust Chute.)

15
I had recently started replaying CT on PS1 after hearing of CT DS. It takes a couple playthroughs to get everything straight and to recognize certain aspects of the game which may occur in the beginning of the game and which are then discussed later in the game (whew! what a run-on-sentence). I like talking to the NPCs, as maybe I miss something or do not catch it the first time or hope I will find out something new.

This quote from the man at the first Ioka Hut, after Lavos arrived from Deep Space and destroyed the Reptites, caught my attention almost immediately having played through both CT and CC multiple times...

Quote from: Man at Ioka Hut 65,000,000 B.C.
Found strange rock! But feel icky when touch, so throw away.

Could this have been the FF? Where the man threw it is also a mystery. Any speculation or reaction towards it? Could it have been just some normal rock or perhaps leftover Dreamstone, rather, could it not have been a rock at all?

The woman who gave you the "Sweet Water" to replenish HP/MP is now suddendly out as well.

Quote from: Woman at Ioka Hut 65,000,000 B.C.
No more Sweet Water. Never happen before.

This is what I love about CT and even CC. Mystery. I love mysteries and unanswerable questions. What was that "Sweet Water"? Why was it suddendly gone after Lavos obliterated the Tyrano Lair? More importantly is this thread title. This possible FF reference here at the Ioka Hut has me questioning the FF origin. What do you think?

One other thing... with regards to the Melchior and Janus of the keystone timeline where Crono and company attempted to save Schala from the Ocean Palace... they were sucked into a "black" gate, presumably due to Time Bastard. Lucca states that it was actually a Time Gate like the ones created by Lavos. I believe this to be Time Bastard, but if they were not discarded, where would they have gone?
