Magic, Elements, and Technology / What makes someone an Innate?
« on: February 16, 2006, 07:45:17 pm »
There's nothing to suggest that innate colour or element is hereditary. Siblings and parents of characters don't seem to, as a rule, share the same colour/element.
Personally I think that though elements and colours are different things that they probably operate in the same way. The innate nature of a person determines their elemental alignment. The magic used in Chrono Cross is artificial magic, but I think it follows a lot of the same rules and the same elements work well for people as with magic, since both come from personality or nature.

Yeah, if you've got the time and drive, learn to hack.
Sure you have time and drive, but those things alone won't make a project, what are YOU planning on inputting into this? You can't just decide that you're going to be the 'leader' and that'll be your job. You can't just flounce in and say 'I want you guys to revive this project, I'll tell you what to do and you do it.' In real life, you pay people to do stuff with money, on the internet you have to pay with effort. The effort you make drives others to make an effort.

Magic, Elements, and Technology / What makes someone an Innate?

We know very little about Schala. Though she is wise, pure and insighful seeming, like a white innate, she still shows some traits of a red innate, such as she makes decisions based on her own feelings and is passionate, she does things on spur of the moment.
Theories:
Schala toned down her personality because she's from Zeal, where everything and everybody is very calm. By Zealian standards, she probably is quite wild and fiery, going to see the earthbounds even though she isn't supposed to etc. She just comes across as being very calm and gentle to Lucca (I say Lucca, since she's the one who mentions it in her letter in CC).
Kid, on the other hand, having the same innately fiery and passionate nature, but raised by another Red innate, Lucca, in a much less subdued environment she ended up with a much more prominent and obviously fire aligned nature.

Theory 2:
When the clone, Kid, was made, she had a different innate. Perhaps because she was born from Schala's passion, she was created as a fiery, passionate girl. Or maybe it was random? Maybe some higher power, or even Schala herself was aware that only a driving, passionate personality would be able to set events in motion.

Theory 3:
Element isn't set at birth, it becomes only set when the person's personality begins to form. Kid became a fire innate like Lucca though emulating her guardian's passionate nature.

I think a person's innate element is to do with their inherent character traits. In fact, a few years back, I made a little quiz based on what I'd observed in Chrono Cross!
http://quizilla.com/users/darthmongoose/quizzes/What's%20your%20Chrono%20Cross%20innate%20element%3F/

If I redid the quiz of course, I'd take into account that really, Crono is more
likely to be a white innate than a yellow (not really sure, could be either).
But generally (there are some exceptions, but in general):
White/Heaven element are spiritually in tune, insightful and benevolent, but naive.
Black/Dark are intellegent and organised, but scheming and self serving.
Red/Fire are passionate and creative, but hot tempered.
Blue/Water are nurturing, level headed and brave, but hard to fathom.
Yellow/Earth are homely, stoic guardians who like the simple things.
Green/Air are lofty and adventurous and can be loners.

Lavos, the Planet, and other Entities / Where Did lavos come from?
« on: February 14, 2006, 07:14:32 am »
I think the thing about Lavos that I really love is how mysterious it is, it's never really fully explained exactly what it is, where it came from or what motivates it. I think that makes it a rather terrifying creature. It's not like those villains who feel the need to follow the heroes around trying to stop them and failing, it just waits there, at the centre of the world.
It's just so alien to everything, it doesn't try to explain itself, justify itself or anything. Fantastic end boss!
Personally, I think Lavos is an extra-terrestrial entity that finds a world, feeds from it, gives birth to young and sends those spawn off to find worlds of their own when they are big enough, like an insect that lays it's eggs inside the body of another creature, but it does it with planets. That's just my little theory of course.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / How does she do it?
« on: February 13, 2006, 12:23:59 am »
If Crono can cut through a tank using a katana and Marle can heal injuries by spreading her arms, I'm willing to believe that Lucca can build a robot. The nice thing about CT is that for the sake of fun it occasionally ignores logic.

The crowd at the fair are heard saying that Lucca's inventions go wrong a lot.   Maybe that's why they're not widely used.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Favourite Music
« on: February 11, 2006, 06:36:27 am »
CT: Secret of the forest. I was never that keen on it until I discovered that if you stay in the forest a while, listening, it goes into thise beautiful piano bit.
I also like the Black Omen music.

RD: I don't know what it's called, but I love the ending theme of RD. The one that plays when the credits roll.

CC: Voyage, Another World. One of the most relaxing pieces of music I know of. Time's Scar is also superb, and Radical Dreamers....man, I love the whole soundtrack of CC!

Hang on, I just remembered that at one point in the game, the Epoch 'follows' the gang through time to find them. Maybe the guru was sent to the future just as he was, but was then followed by his prototype Epoch?
...Of course, even with that being the case it doesn't explain his lab coming through as well...unless it was a time and space traveling lab, which would be a rather silly theory. 0_o'

When I first found the site, I spent ages reading all the articles and features, I'm still working my way through all the Encyclopedia, the amount of information is pretty overwhelming!

The sketch isn't my best stuff, just a quick doodle. I assure you that lots of English girls can draw. Beatrix Potter was an English girl!
I drew the sketch below quite a while ago (about a year ago I think now) but I still like it.

If you reverse a swastica, it becomes the kanji 'ban' (yes, like bankai in the anime Bleach) which, on tourist maps and stuff here in Japan, is used to show a temple. Even knowing this prior to coming, I did a double take the first time I saw a Japanese tourist map that appeared to be covered in Nazi logos!

I don't think Porre is meant to equal any real world thing, perhaps it's influenced by some, but it could well be influenced by the Japanese Imperial Army taking over China and Korea. I don't think even by drawing a paralell, you'll end up understandting the game better.

CT: Dragon Tank. It's cool looking, the fight takes place in a really fantasic looking location, and the way Crono Finishes it at the end of the battle is really spectacular.

CC: The Time Devourer. It was an occasionally irritating fight, but using the Chrono Cross was so cool, especially when it started playing the tune from the CT opening and brought the whole thing full circle, that and seeing Schala there was just...whoah.

General Discussion / Top 10 RPGs of all time
« on: February 07, 2006, 12:33:51 am »
I'm afraid 'Dirge of Cerberus' really is lame. I was SO dissapointed too! The Music is superb, the graphics aren't bad, the cutscenes have fantastic Advent Children graphics, but the gameplay is really badly balanced, to the point that sometimes you wonder if anybody play tested the game at all. The story is ok, but doesn't live up to FF7. Bosses kill you by exploiting gameplay flaws and Vincent can do none of the cool stuff he can do in cutscenes. Only two main FF7 characters have been rendered into game graphics (the rest appear only in brief cutscene cameos)...Oh, and the WORST thing, they have inserted Japanese pretty boy pop star Gackt into the plot of FF7, as a super powerful Sephiroth-esque (complete with one black wing) character called 'G'. *cries* WHY?! WHY!!?!?!

Kingdom Hearts 2 on the other hand, and Drakenguard 2 are both excellent sequals that build on their previous games. Especially KH2, it's beautiful! The graphics are excellent and the animation quality is...well, almost as good as a feature film in places. The improved combat system is really cool (want to pull off Advent Children style stunts in real time combat? You got it!) and the gummi ships, which used to make me groan, are now almost criminally good fun. Oh, and the bosses and monsters are better, involving much more strategy and stuff. Summons stay with the party rather than being like special spells, and the darker plotline and atmosphere makes it a little bit more grown up, but it still retains the nostalgic charm of the original.

Polling / 09/30/05 - What's your favorite Radical Dreamers scenario?
« on: February 06, 2006, 09:16:18 am »
I like the main scenario a lot, but 'Shadow Realm' actually SCARED THE PANTS OFF ME! To manage to leave me genuinely terrified with just text and some simple pictures...now that's the sign of a really well written story, so my vote is for 'Shadow Realm'.

General Discussion / Top 10 RPGs of all time
« on: February 06, 2006, 09:12:20 am »
Hmmmm, mine would be...

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 7
3. Kingdom Hearts 2
4. Xenogears
5. Final Fantasy 8
6. Grandia (1)
7. Chrono Cross
8. Final Fantasy X-2
9. Star Ocean 3
10. Final Fantasy X

My explaination:
I haven't included PC RPGs in this (If I had, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and Neverwinter Nights, as well as maybe Morrowind would feature) I haven't included 'Radical Dreamers' even though it's one of my all time favourites, because it's more like a text adventure, and the original 'main' scenario is pretty short. Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time and the Wind Waker are two of my big faves, but they're not really as much 'RPGs' as the others.

1. CT is the best RPG I have ever played. Umm, yeah that's why I'm here. It balances gameplay and plot, has memorable scenes and characters and is extremely high quality, it feels like a lot of people put real effort into it.
2. FF7, some people don't like it, personally, I think the cyberpunk atmosphere, great music, detailed backdrops and convoluted plotline all work together really well to make a memorable game.
3. I'm in Japan right now, so I've played and completed this. It's actually one of the best games I've played in years. It feels like an all round quality game (oh since I'm here, I can also inform you that sadly, Dirge of Cerberus is utterly crap...no, really, it's a shoddy, rushed out game.)
4. If the second disk hadn't been so rushed, this would be number one or two. Fantastic plotline, interesting battles, wonderful music...big robots.
5. The first console RPG I ever played. Loads of people hate FF8, and I admit, it's a flawed game in gameplay and plot, but it has an atmosphere and artistry that no other game I've played shares, oh and the best cutscene coreography of any game...ever.
6. Tough coin toss between Grandia 1 and 2 here. Three also seems good, but the plot is just a bit too complex for my Japanese, so I can't tell enough to add it to the list -_- I think 1 wins out on creativity and storyline, but 2 has the crazy ending and also Millenia, who rocks.
7. Chrono Cross! Great storyline, Fantastic music, maybe too many characters and a rather wierd battle system, but it was trying to be different and I respect that.
8. NO, I'M NOT CRAZY! Oi! Stop laughing! I like FFX-2 okay!? Why? Maybe it's a girl thing, I just liked the idea of the main heroine being a nineteen year old girl who acts like a nineteen year old girl rather than a self righteous 'I stand here supporting the hero and being nice!' little wuss. It was fun, creative, and unlike any other RPG I've ever played.
9. I've only played a little of SO 1 and 2, otherwise they would probably rate above this, as I hear they're better. But SO3 is a solid game, good graphics, cool battle system, decent voice acting, very good music.
10. FFX rates below FFX-2 for me because FFX-2 was the more creative and doesn't have battles that last ten minutes each. FFX does have good music, a sound, if predictable, plot, an interesting, strategy based battle system and some memorable moments.
