Kajar Laboratories / Major Chrono Crisis Update
« on: March 24, 2006, 06:17:40 am »
Love the concept art, the artist has a really nice style, simple, understated and with confidently drawn flowing curves. The female characters look great, they're not over the top or slutty looking (which as a female gamer is always something I like in a character design!).
Can't wait to see more!

Kajar Laboratories / RPG Maker Chipsets
« on: March 18, 2006, 08:58:09 pm »
The End of Time will not GO on a chipset correctly! IT IS ISOMETRIC! AND TOO BIG TO FIT ON A CHIPSET! We've already told you that.
The only way you could do it, as has already been said, would be to make it a picture that is placed under a blank chipset with walkable and un-walkable squares placed in the right places.

If you're going to use RPG maker, you need to learn how to make and modify resources for yourself. Go on some RPGmaker communities like Skytower games, play some games, like Naufragar Crimson, Sunset over Imdhal and Legion Saga 2 and 3 to get an idea of how to make a decent RPGmaker game before trying to make your own.

What I meant was, if they'd left him called 'Kaeru' rather than translating it to the english for 'Kaeru', 'Frog', hardly anybody would understand why he was called that because most people don't speak Japanese. Since Frog isn't Glenn's real name, just something he's calling himself because he feels he's lost his true self, it would be a bit wierd to the English speaking audience if his fake name sounded just like some random Japanese name, but some translations of things do stuff like this, assuming that keeping the Japanese name is best even if it won't make sense to the player.

Magus' name would actually be translated as Maou, but if you say that in English, it doesn't have a particularly pleasing or imposing sound to it. Plus the meaning of the name is lost. 'Magus' has a much stronger sound and keeps relatively close the original 'feel' of the name.

The changes made to the names, I think were all totally correct. I mean, would you really want Ozzie, Slash and Flea to remain with the names 'Vinegar', 'Soy Sauce' and 'Mayonaise'? Would you have any idea why Glenn, when in the form of a Frog was called 'Kaeru' if they hadn't translated his name? Also, personally I think 'Shala' is a much more interesting, exotic and memorable name than 'Sara'.
The only name change I disagree with is 'Grandleon' to 'Masamune', simply because it  doesn't really make sense to name a broadsword after a famous legendary Katana. Grandleon suited Frog's medievil ethos better and was more original sounding.

Ok, I've made a simple tutorial using somebody's star ocean chipset I found on a site:

See? It's really not that hard. All you need to do is arrange the parts of the chipset in the correct parts of the rectangle. Most people work it out after looking at a few chipsets. Most of the time, you're best off just using other people's ready made chips though.

If you need sprite rips to use for things. I have found an awesome site:

http://sprites.fireball20xl.com/

Basically it's got sprite rip sheets from loads of games, including CT. Just look under 'square-enix'. You should find pretty much any sprites you need to use there, all you need to do is then re-arrange them into tilesets, character sets and the like.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / I know why Frog talks like Shakespeare

Kansai dialect is a dialect of Japanese spoken in the kansai region of Japan. It's often associated with comedians and comic characters. There are specific types of Kansai-ben, the most famous being the Osakka dialect.
Characters in anime who speak with Osakka dialect and relatively common, often pose a translation problem:
Osakka from Azumanga Daioh was translated into English speaking with a soft southern american accent in the anime, but in the manga speaks with the dialect of a New Yorker. Nandeyanen was translated as 'fuhgettaboudit', which worked surprisingly well.
Keroberos from Cardcaptor Sakura was translated into English speaking regular English but with occasional wierd words. I've seen his 'Konnonachiwa!' (dialect for Konnichiwa) translated in the manga as 'Hellololo!' and in a fandub as 'Whassaaaaap!?''
The best localised translation of Kansai dialect I've ever seen is that for the British release of the manga of Excel Saga, they made Sumiyoshi (the fat guy who speaks only in Kansai dialect subtitles) speak in Northern English, which due to it's industrial heritage and use in comedy is a perfect British equivalent for Kansai-ben....Plus it was special for me because I speak with a Northern English dialect hahaha.

Kid's accent I always thought of as Cockney (London) English rather than Australian. I think they thought it'd sound cool for a sweet young thief to have an 'Oliver Twist' sound to her voice, but wrote Cockney so badly it came out very Australian sounding.

The way a character talks is an integral part of characterization Smile. Or that's what my English teacher told me.

Really, if Lucca spoke in Ebonics, you'd think differently of her, wouldn't you?

Which is precisely WHY I'm not a fan of the way Frog was shown in English. It changes how his character is shown. In the Japanese CT, Frog speaks in a very straightforward and direct manner, like a Warrior. The English version makes him speak in a flowery and superfluous way.

Though the English Frog is kind of more fun, the Japanese one sounds cooler because of his calm and serious way of speaking.

Hey, he's talking about us translation project people! That's cool, he's saying why we're doing it and stuff! ^_^ ...Man, if he can read English enough to translate the jist of that Ted Woolsley interview, he'd be a real help to the translation project...

Luckily in Japanese, Frog speaks normally. I was worried (as a member of the CT retranslation group here) that Frog was going to talk in very old, meandering Japanese like a kabuki actor, or in super long-winded uber polite keigo or something. He speaks standard Japanese with occasional croaking.

I'm pretty glad of this, because the 'Olde English' he speaks in the English translation is mostly pretty damned awful. They've just shoved in a few 'thou' and 'th's and 'st's inconsistantly. As somebody who's from England, and who studies English lit, I find some of Frog's dialogue makes me cringe, even though I love him as a character.
I think the translators thought it would give him more character and make him more 'medievil' sounding if he spoke that way. Though the problem is that he speaks more rennaisance than medievil. If he spoke like a medievil Englishman, it'd be like reading Chaucer, making him close to impossible to understand to almost anybody playing the game!

Yeah, I always figured it was because of the traditional fairytale connection of turning the handsome knight or prince into a frog. CT twists the tale a little so that the frog is still a fearsome warrior and a knight of noble bearing despite his form.

Ok, since it's actually easier to show you than to teach you, I'm going to just GIVE you a load of CT chipsets I've collected off the web. I think after looking at some, you'll understand the dimensions and arrangements. For further questions, I suggest you consult an RPGmaker site.

Here are the resources for you:
http://home.graffiti.net/darth_mongoose/ULTIMATE_CT.rar

This is a really good RPGmaking community. I used to hang there. The people are nice, they have FAQs and tutorials and I'm sure they'll help you (please read their FAQs and tutorials before asking them questions though or they might get mad at you).

Wait a minute. You didn't jus take screenshots and put them into RPGmaker, did you? You DID arrange the image pieces into a chipset of the right dimensions. Also, did you put it into 'indexed colour' mode rather than 'RGB' or 'full colour'? If it's not in 'indexed colour' RPGmaker won't recognise it,even if you have arranged it as a chipset.

That great northern pyramid's seals have never been breached once. [end]

"The seed we humbly recieved from the guru of life, which the Queen ardently desired to burn. The mysterious seed that the guru said has the power to protect all green things."

Well, there's my translation. Sounds like something from Lord of the Rings hahaha.

If there's ever any doubts, I'm female.
