Interesting take, HadesKane.

It reminds me of a fic where Belthasar turned out to be batshit and greedy about taking Lavos's power.  The author seems to speculate that Belthasar's real goal was to harvest the power of the Frozen Flame, and rescuing Schala was just a side job.

However, taking some inspiration from that, Belthasar trying to become like Lavos-the perfect being.  Belthasar already played god and pretty much destroyed Wazuki in the process of his grand schemes, so then he may make the leap to wanting to become Lavos in some way, to become god, and the ultimate god of fate and magic.

I also had the impression that he destroys the world in 1999 because he sees human civilization as a threat. Whether the culture of 1999 was siphoning off his power to create Magitek, or if they had conventional technology that was a threat to Lavos (such as nuclear weapons), or if he just wanted a safe playground for his spawn, we're not really sure. What is certain is that he destroyed Zeal for that reason. When the Mammon Machine was on the bottom of the ocean, he could feel his power being drained, which startled him awake and presented him with a direct threat to his life and livelihood. We all saw what happened next in that iconic scene. The fact that Lavos destroyed only Zeal, and not the Earthbound, is one of the strongest arguments imo that Lavos is a highly intelligent being and not just a space tick.

Lavos clearly was manipulating Queen Zeal, as her servants note that she changed overnight after the Mammon Machine was turned on.  It's possible that Lavos manipulated her to get closer to him so he could destroy the Mammon Machine.  Or maybe just Lavos's eldritch alien, maddening, inscrutable, incomprehensible, vast, mind drove her completely batshit the way all alien space gods who sleep for eons like Cthulhu do.

Speaking of that, Lavos is much more easily understood if you interpret him as a being inspired by Cthulhu and the other Great Old Ones.  Which is to say "your puny human mind cannot comprehend his motives at all."

Speaking of such, it's interesting how the Chrono series can be interpreted as "Lovecraft Lite"-basically cosmic horror in which the humans win in the end...for now.  Lavos being a being that is not exactly evil, but whose existence threatens humans is very much like how in the cosmic horror genre there are often beings who are threatening to destroy the world but it's not really that they are evil, that we are just insignificant bugs to them.  However, despite that there is a chilling thought about how humans wouldn't be there if it weren't for Lavos, and that even magic was a gift brought by Lavos, and that their world was shaped by Lavos.  So despite humans winning in the end, the influence of Lavos is their own existence, and there are probably thousands of other Lavoses out there.

The incubators from Puella Magi Madoka Magica(which is also cosmic horror inspired) operate by targeting girls who have the most despair tied to their fate, then they grant them a wish-in exchange for having them be magical girls.  The end goal is to build of a great amount of hope and empowerment, only to crush it all in the end into a big ball of despair.  Of course CT came before PMMM, but I wonder if Lavos gifting greater intelligence and magic to humans is similar to this-create hope, dreams, etc. then crush them and harvest the immense emotional energy coming from that.

If I recall correctly the only character stated to having the aura/scent of the black wind is Crono.

The main thing unique about Crono is what transpires with the Chrono Trigger. Many time travel but I think he is the only one that is removed from time itself (though I suppose that is open to interpretation on what the Chrono Trigger actually does).

In that regard I thought it was Janus sensing that Crono no longer belongs to this existence, or something else space-time related.

Edit: Changed Krono to Crono. My apologies if that caused confusion.

Janus tells Schala that the Black Wind is howling, and she says she feels it too.

It seems to be something that some people are sensitive to, some kind of omen (or was this added by Ted Woosley?).  It might be something unique to shadow users(does that mean Schala is a shadow element user?).

Personally I would try to incorporate the fall of Gaurdia into the plot, if that is going to happen.  Maybe Dalton is going to play a huge role.

I personally like the idea of Schala being the main character, not Kid, but Schala.  Schala teams up with Chrono and Marle's son or daughter to save Guardia from Porre, but it uncovers some nasty revelations.

It also uncovers a group of people who worship Lavos, or the Frozen Flame, they see Dalton as their prophet, and where able to sway the people of Porre to join behind him (also because the mayor was no longer an asshole thanks to that jerky you gave his ancestor).  The group was formed at first by some mystics who hoped for Magus to summon it, but later it became some undergound cult due to no support, but *something* happened in which is spread to a few mad humans, maybe Lavos, whose consciousness transcended time and space, spread nightmares and dreams to people in hopes of securing its legacy long after its demise.

Of course the thing that SHOULD be there is the Schala and Magus reunion.  Perhaps Magus could also be a main character as well.  Maybe Schala rescues Magus from some terrible fate, involving the Frozen Flame.

The death of Lavos begins to attract the attention of some very powerful beings.  The origin of Lavos is explored, but not fully explained.  The "lavoids" from other planets begin to show up on the planet, a little different than their fallen brother/sister and weaker due to not landing on a habitable planet or having spent their energy reproducing already, but they don't burrow in the ground, they just barrage the world in a deadly meteor shower.

Destroying them then draws the attention of a dark being who created the lavoids, perhaps a being that wanted to reshape the universe in some way, by spreading hope and magic and only to end it wish despair and powerlessness-over and over again, a terrible cycle that cumulates into a greater, darker end.

And to boot, this being has secured its existence with a time loop, so that if it were destroyed it would break all of reality.  The group encounters many other time loops, but has to do something the break these loops (hence "Chrono Break" XD) and destroy the chains this being has on reality.

So I had this idea about what if Schala went directly to the "current" time instead of the whole Kid thing (both CC and RD).  I personally like this idea a lot better, where she would gradually develop from a meek victim to a heroine in her own right.

So I started drawing some concepts of say, Schala appears in 1005 A.D and starts her own journey.  Also ties in with a fanfic I wrote wherein Magus trades places with Schala on Dream Devourer to save her, and so she has to start her own journey to save him.

As you can see, I made her outfit and weapons be reminiscent of Kid:

This is going by the "Magus sacrifices himself for Schala", but he leaves behind his weapons and items for her and she learns to use a scythe, but more of a "finesse" rather than a strength weapon:

A color pic, this time she has a staff:

Am I the only one who wouldn't mind if Chrono Cross was disregarded as canon and we just moved forward with Chrono Trigger 2. You could have Schala show up again and resolve her deal... Hell, you could have all new characters and only encounter some/all of the originals. But it'd be directly after CT.

But then, sequels of 20 years later, if Hollywood is any indication.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I agree.  Technically it never happened anyway despite El Nido existing at the end.

For the people who wonder why there should be a Chrono Trigger 2, it's because a common criticism of CT was that it was too short!  Even the multiple endings weren't really what I'd think multiple endings should be, there was little difference between endings, but nothing really timeline diverging, they seemed mostly like Easter Eggs.

So the game often left you craving more.

Nah, come on people, just think, we can make a way for this theory to still work. It's too good to give up on!

We could do the 50/50 thing like Serge went through if nothing else...

Actually, I have a few ideas:

-This does happen, but in an alternate timeline because why not, and he winds up in El Nido because of Opassa Beach.

-The relationship between Guile and Magus is actually more like Kid and Schala, Guile is actually a fragment in some way.

-The above could have happened like this:  Somewhere along the timeline FATE or something else starts to tamper with Magus's timeline.  Maybe someone wanted him out of the picture so they intentionally weakened Magus's morale and spirit so he couldn't save Schala.  Maybe Magus figured out why and did something to save himself, and so retaliated by splitting himself in some way, that fragment becoming Guile.  Hence why Guile is hardly like Magus and maybe that whole sequence where he gives up saving Schala is just his "son-clone" or some shit like that, I don't know this is getting too weird.

-Or maybe he doesn't actually wipe his memory, that was actually his "son-clone" dumped into Guardia and the true Magus fled out of the timeline so he wouldn't be destroyed by whatever was out for him, and then had to watch over Kid from outside of reality, hence appearing like a shadow.

-Well he does say "if some part of me" can make it...

And of course, the same fruit that bears it, also bears the seeds of destruction.

Underneath this stuff about Lavos, the Frozen Flame, magic, and dreamstone seems to underlie some pretty dark themes about the direction people are heading.  Taking Lavos into account adds a touch of cosmic horror, that these things were only given to humans so humans could be harvested.

Of course the heroes prevail over these things, but not without a lot of sacrifice and tampering with reality, and Lavos is only one out of countless many.

I don't know, I just wanted to know about any good remixes using both Magus's and Schala's theme together or if anyone had done a Black Midi version of any CT track.

10
Dunno if this has been addressed, but where would we post stuff about music remixes such as requests, ideas, or seeking a specific one that is likely to have been done already?

11
Well I guess it's debunked then, unless you want to add more timey-wimey things to it.

Okay bear with me here, this is a theory someone brought up to me some time ago, and while the evidence for it is almost nonexistent, I think it's still an intriguing thing to think about.

The theory is that Guile is Janus, but from a different tangent, so to speak.

Magus would negate his own existence as the Prophet and become a time bastard(actually that's not the right word) like the Epoch.  He would "warn" Janus about what he would become in an indirect way, influencing Janus's decisions and behavior later on.  But the most important thing Magus would have done to negate his existence would be to bar Janus from going to the Ocean Palace and leaving him with Melchior.

Here's why I say "almost nonexistent".

After the fall of Zeal, someone says that Melchior tried to grab onto Janus as he was sucked into a time gate, but then both slipped in.  I assumed at first that they would get sucked in and Melchior and Janus would be both separated afterward.

But what if they didn't?

What if say, Janus AND Melchior landed in 1000 A.D Gaurdia.  Melchior raises Janus like a kindly grandpa and Janus does not grow up to be a dick.  He becomes Guile instead.  If Magus knows, it would give him a little more peace to know that he did give a second chance to "himself".

I secretly hope that Tokyo RPG Factory, makers of I am Setsuna, would buy the intellectual property.

If Zeal never fell, the changes would be drastic enough that it would be likely that Guardia, and the protagonists except for Ayla would not exist.  It may be possible for Lavos to be defeated anyway without them, but they are too integral to the timeline(as Gaspar pointed out that the Chrono Trigger would only work for someone "important" to time) for that to happen.
