Chrono News / R.I.P. Akira Toriyama
« on: March 08, 2024, 07:45:09 am »
Akira Toriyama has passed away.

The man is a legend but it is immeasurable how much his art was crucial for Chrono Trigger and setting the visual tone of the series. Just looking at the sprite icons and how the pixel art was translated directly from his designs is making me feel some type of way.

Edit: Posted this in the wrong forum.

This means after all these years, we're going to finally get a real, adaptable Chrono Engine.  :D

If so, thank you. If not, thank you for making the attempt.

I do have a question.  Is this engine going to stick strictly with the limits of Chrono Trigger (magic system, number of tech combinations, party size, etc.), or will it offer a some flexibility in terms of expandable content?

Edit: I read what this actually is now.  I misunderstood, but still, thanks.

Fan Art / Re: Recent original CT art

I guess I'm weird because I always saw the characters younger than what they were.

I had always assumed Crono, Marle, and Lucca were all 15, no older or younger. They didn't seem like fully grown  adults, but they weren't young kids either.

I also thought that Frog was in his early 30s at oldest. He was clearly barely an adult when he set out on his journey, and his special sprite was that of an adult, but not a middle-aged man.

This really changes my understanding of the story.

When I think of Chrono Trigger I think of awesome sprites, Dual/Triple Techs, and multiple endings with New Game +.

For me, I think of the gameplay and presentation more than the story.

Fan Art / Re: Radical Dreamers Lynx manor in Chrono Trigger style
« on: January 10, 2020, 06:51:00 pm »
I'm just piling on to say that I love this, even though I've never played Radical Dreamers.

Since RD is a completely different style of game than Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross, it wouldn't apply for this project, but I've always been fascinated by the idea of recreating other RPGs' overworlds and interiors with Chrono Trigger's style. Part of me wonders there wouldn't be a tool that could be used to use the tile map from one of these other games  and replace them with the corresponding tiles from Chrono Trigger as a rough, first pass, and from there the map would be adjusted so that it would not only be more accurate (in cases where the automated system introduces errors), but a more polished finished product.

So it is kinda difficult topic to manage because it is very important.  I have been in touch with a few musicians and prices for original composed music is pretty expensive. On the low side, I have been quoted $500 USD a minute.  Because of these prices, I have to create the environment first, then request composition.

$500 a minute is kind of pricey for a project of this level.

I found this user who charges $200 a minute, which is a lot more reasonable.

Or you could take CptOvaltine's offer since it's right in front of you.  :D

Also, have you tried to contact William Kage or MyNewSountrack/Luis Sies and ask them if they do comissions, if you're looking for a SNES vibe?

Fan Art / Re: Chrono Trigger 1000AD map Edits to 1020AD

This is great!

From the title I was expecting there to be a recreation of Chrono Cross's overworld with Chrono Trigger's tileset as a pure art project, but the idea of merging the two worlds visually never occurred to me.

A winner is you!

I voted three options.

Schala/Kid - Yes, I know Kid is Schala's clone, but it feels like Schala's story isn't truly complete. Cross raised more questions than answers and want to know precisely what happened to this girl and if she would reunite with her brother and the main cast.

Human Glenn - On one hand,  Glenn's story is completed in Chrono Trigger. Cursed knight overcomes his guilt and inadequacies to prove himself  to be the hero that he was always meant to be,  then helped to save world on top of it. On the other hand I am intrigued at the further adventures of this figure, especially since he is so renowned that he actually has people named after him 400 years later. He didn't stop being a hero but what did he do?

Reptite - In all the games, so far, the Reptites got burnt hard. Not only did Lavos wipe them out originally, preventing them from ruling the planet, but then time-travellers came and put an additional beatdown on them. Then worst yet in the timeline when they actually did evolve in line with the planet they still got corrupted. Since the protagonists are largely humans, our sympathies are supposed to lie with the cavepeople, but tis case makes a really good case that humanity ruins all it touches. I'd want more from the Reptite point of view to flesh them out from being either victims or villains.

The stills and screenshots do not do this video justice.  The animation is incredible.

I voted for the unpopular RPG Maker option.

Hacks are wonderful ways to make fan games, but Chrono Trigger is limited in how it can be hacked at this time. As wonderful as the existing tools are...they aren't exactly easy for a novice to work with. There needs to be a way to bring in people who have ideas but who faint at seeing raw hexadecimal. Hacks also limit fan games to the relative constraints of the original game.

A Chrono Cross hack would be even more difficult and divisive, given how much of the remaining Chrono fanbase holds mixed opinions of the game.

The only way to make a fan continuance is to make something that fans can recreate. RPG Maker is the best option of the four presented.

As far as the whole "make a new IP with the same gameplay" plan, that's not a bad idea, but it you want to make a lasting fan legacy, in my opinion a Chrono Engine, one designed to not only mimic the existing Chrono Trigger game but to expand on it, would be the best idea. People could then make their own fan games, tweak the engine if possible, then move from there

We also lack actual doers -- coders who can put the game together. We've seen a dozen projects fall because everyone wants to be an idea man but no one wants to really get their hands dirty with coding and assembly (and I blame myself for being guilty of this at times).

It is true the community lacks doers, but that's more of a lack of skill, not necessarily a lack of willingness to do the work. I'm not a coder and even though I have an idea for a very simple task and conceptually know what needs to be done, I am aware if I were to dedicate all of my free time to it, it would take months. Therefore it would not be an efficient use of my time to work on a tiny project, especially when it would take people days at worst.

Besides, unless you go the hacking route there isn't any need for assembly. (Bad joke, I know.).

General Discussion / Re: Important Differences
« on: July 29, 2018, 04:59:04 am »
It could be worse. I have absolutely no musical ability or knowledge at all (I never could grasp reaing sheet music...it was too abstract for me) and because of this, I have relaxed boundaries as to what is melodically possible. That sounds nice, except whn you have a remix of Schala's theme fused with Bloody Tears from Castlevania stuck in your head and aren't sure if you imagined hearing it one time  and it became an ear worm or if you imagined it outright but can't reproduce it.

Personally speaking, I love Chrono Trigger's setup for combining attacks, encouraging players to experiment around to see what attacks from which characters can work. I know the game was always popular, so it baffles me that no one ever thought to use it again after this.

Also, I think having to prove I'm not a robot and answer two trivia questions about the game in order to post is a little much.

I remember having to answer questions like that to join other fan forums. In a spam-filled world, it's an unfortunate reality.

As for why no one ever duplicated Chrono Trigger's system...probably because it is hard to duplicate, and only SquareEnix would have the source code...and they might not even have it any more.

It's telling that to this day, there is still no Chrono Engine that could be used to create similar games. With Chrono Trigger you not only have to worry about area of effect of character abilities or even all of the different combination of techs (factorials of the number of cast members), you also have to worry about individualized enemy behavior.

Unless we attract the fans with the skills, time, and drive to dedicate themselves to making a game -- or at least an engine -- with a Chrono-like system, it isn't going to happen. And if diehard Chrono fans won't do it, game developers definitely aren't going to bother with re-using a system from a nearly 25 year old game.

I'd love for it to happen, but I've accepted it won't happen.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Was Crono Supposed to Die?
« on: January 19, 2018, 08:23:57 am »
Back to the original topic, I don't know if killing off Crono permanenly would be a gpod idea,  but I will admit that having him die and not be replaced would serve as an interesting meaning of the title itself.

Instead of the Chrono Trigger being the egg, Crono would be the trigger for the party to go on.

I've gotten decent at 65816 ASM, but you can't practically make a game using that anymore. 22 years ago, sure, but not today.

That sounds like an interesting plan. Any chance you could throw it together?

You can make a homebrew SNES game, and given that people have been injecting roms into  NES and SNES classic this still may be a viable distribution method for a brand new game.
