General Discussion / Re: Earth-Like Planet Discovered!

I am still baffled why scientists think that just because we survive this way, a alien life form has to also. Humans adapt to their environment, and not everything on earth lives off the same elements. I am confused why a alien race, if there be one, could not live of carbon dioxide or what not on their planet. They could have entirely different body systems we do.

« on: April 19, 2007, 05:43:57 pm »Yeah, but Snake is so cool he raises the coolness of the game just by being there.
And yeah, Raiden kicked ass too, people just hate him cuz he replaced Mr. Cool, cuz he did kinda whine a lot, and we had to see his ass, which is not cool at all. Damn, Kojima blew my mind with sons of liberty . I don't get when people say the plot was too convoluted, I got pretty much everything that was going on.
Maybe you can enlighten, how are dead people running the nation now?

What he said was a statement to an entire team, not just to the blacks or whatever. This is a simple case where nothing actually *racist* was said. I have found that most people will take something out of context to make it racist because they want it to be. Gives the nappy-haired-ho's something to complain about.

« on: April 03, 2007, 09:11:15 pm »No, I didn't change what I think. I continue to say the same thing: as it stands the depiction is degrading and thus the depiction should be more realistic. How is that contradictory? Realism means realism: it means a person should look like what they should look like for what their character is and their situation. What is hard to understand about that?
Because what you dictate as unreal is in fact real. There are many people who are strong without being well defined. There are many self respecting females who dress like many games portray.
Ie. You say Ayla should be muscular because of her strength, when there are many people in the world who are the same way. Its is contradictory to say that something real, is unreal.

« on: April 03, 2007, 08:26:34 pm »Actually, here I disagree. Crono might be a teenager, but not a teenager of a 'modern' world. Times were when someone that was, say, sixteen could be a good fighter and soldier, better than a full adult. I suppose this example is more for comand prowess than outright fighting, but Alexander did a brilliant job commanding his father's cavalry at a battle when he was merely sixteen. In times past, people matured faster, and someone we'd consider a kid and teenager could have had a place with the men. I think, if he's a swordsman, he could well have had that strength, though, technically speaking, his muscles should be stronger on his left arm than his right.Fair enough. I suppose I hadn't considered that as fully as I should have, especially where Magus is concerned in terms of scythes. I still think they're a little bit too muscular, but it's more true to what they are than I first thought.
For Janus, it is absolutely warranted. I've always seen him as the perfect warrior - capable in everything. Yeah, sure, he uses scythes and sickles, but that's a choice to make his appearance more fearsome. If he can choose to use such difficult weapons (rarely used in the history of war - though, I must stress, there were times in which they were), and use them well, he must be utterly masterful with other weapons, such as swords, spears, axes, and so forth. I would say his physical strength is warranted.
But that's CT. It has a right to do all that.
You can't hold games in such realistic opinion because the same rules to apply. Sure, if they are strong, they can be muscular, but not all strong people are. For example, myself. I am rather skinny at 135, but I can bench 225 and curl 180, yet I dont have much muscle tone because of my weight.
You confuse me because, as I said, you keep changing around what you think. First you said it was because of girls portrayal in games, and how it degraded them and such. I agreed some games do, but I think you exaggerate the amount. You then change it to a act of realism, in which the people in games should appear as the would to your standard of realism, which you can't apply to games. More realistic games, Metal Gear, army games and the like do this more accuraly then say, Final Fantasy games because most are modeled after our world. However, you can't expect, not condone a game such as Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy and the like because our rules don't apply.
Being as such, realism of the type you speak of can be good, but when not applied I dont see how it can be degrading anyone. Going with which, as I stated, there are many more male characters in games then their are women and because of those vast numbers, there are more males that fall into the category that you apply the females to, but seem to focus mainly on females, which is why I say its a double standard. The platform of the game, and its origination also come into play, as you can't expect a country, say Japan, to adhere to your expectations. And different platform games would require more realism then others.

General Discussion / Re: Final Fantasy 12
« on: April 03, 2007, 07:50:11 am »I find movies that shamelessly exploit women like that to be equally offensive. Any form of popularly enjoyable media that turns women into sex objects just to try and target a specific audience disgusts me. I hate it in video games; I hate it in movies, and I just plain hate it. It's stupid, it's wrong, and it shouldn't be done. Where are the mildly attractive women in games or in movies, hmm? Where are they? Because I can't find them anywhere, at least not in anything popular.
Hell, even Chrono Trigger disobeys this...consider how Ayla is shown in all art with barely any real muscle at all despite being far stronger than all of the men. Conversely, Lucca in Chrono Trigger is something I want to see more...a realistic depiction of a woman rather than an artificial one.
I've been talking about games specifically here because that's what we're focusing on: video games. Stop targeting the horny teenagers, video game companies, and give us realistic people, men and women alike. I'd like to see, for once, a hero that actually looks HUMAN.
As opposed to...magus...or even chrono? Same rules you stated apply to these to characters also. If the only thing that keeps someone like ayla from being realistic is drawn muscle definition, then you have to be the pickiest person I have ever seen. People hardly seen defined women in the real world that fit this. Most are rather just fit, or toned, but not really defined, which more or less, would be what ayla is, except she is strong? Are you saying it is sexist and a poor betrayal of women because ayla shouldn't that strong? Thats the only conclusion I can get from your statement. You yourself seem to be all over the board on what you think is a good portrayal and realistic. Having ayla (and this applies to any game/movie) with someone who might look like they come from a muscle magazine is unappealing to anyone, women and men alike.
Again, the only three games I can see that portray women as sex objects has been DOA Extreme/2 and Rumble roses. Please list for me some games which degrade what a women might be accurately portrayed and no male cast isn't just as bad. As of now, your moot point to me seems nothing more then a double standard.
My we got far off topic and im sure this will be locked soon.

« on: April 02, 2007, 11:20:53 pm »Aye, there are, and that certainlyu is a problem, but my main focus is the latent sexism inherent in these depictions of women in video games. It's like saying "Hey, guess what, women? You're nothing more than sex objects to gamers!" It's no wonder that despite being somewhat mainstream video gaming is still looked down upon...this is one reason why.
It's an insult in the face of female gamers, AND many male gamers like me who would like to see female leads and female characters that aren't half nude everywhere. It'd also help if there were some stronger overall female characters. Too often we see them turn helpless in many situations where they should be able to escape and/or otherwise defeat the situation easily. It's sad.
I want realistic depiction of women. Men too, but women first, because it's much more offensive.
But this isn't restricted to games. Many movies (horror types mainly) are the same way. Yet it isn't looked down up on the same way. While I do find unneeded panty shots, large brests, whatever in bad taste, but do welcome it when it is appropriate, I dont think that is as big of a reason as you make it out to be.
Games like DOA Extreme beach volleyball and rumble roses xx are bad, and are bad because of the reason you stated. But games like...pfft, I honestly can't name a game that is coherently bad with its women. Tifa from FF7 is the worst I can think of.

« on: April 02, 2007, 09:44:33 pm »I don't see game companies making women wearing revealing clothing, or having large busts to be an insult at all. It's called catering to your target audience. As in, males. If there were more female gamers, you would probably either see less of that, or more, I dunno, men with their shirts off?We have so few female gamers precisely BECAUSE the game companies try to reach a target audience like this, and frankly it's been turning me off of their games too. I don't have a problem with attractive female leads, but if you're going to have one, make it realistic! Stop catering to this idiotic media idea of what makes someone beautiful or sexy! It's pissing me off.
Regardless, people want to like what they see in their games. I don't want a fat, no chest zombie as a female lead character. I would want a female lead who is attractive.
I hardly see how ashe was unrealistic when comparied to other games. There are just as many unrealistic males as there are females, so I dont see how that is a issue at all.

« on: April 02, 2007, 07:37:05 pm »Final Fantasy XII plays far too much like an MMO without the interaction between players. I played EverQuest extensively for a few months before I tired of it because that's all it ever is...grinding levels here and there.
The inability of the game developers to let players know about special thing inside the game like the Zodiac Spear also bothered me, as well as the fact that the chests are randomized. While it's nice to see reappearing chests, you rarely get anything decent out of them. Also, it's massive. That wouldn't be a bad thing except there's almost nothing to do in these massive areas except wander around fighting enemies.
Overall, it's a single-player MMO, with about as much of a story and plot as your typical MMO: in other words, not much but mindless exusess to romp through various dungeons. It's pointless, stupid, and I'm selling my copy on eBay.
In that sense, all games are pointless. Its a matter of having fun. Alot of people like dungeon crawl grinding games. All MMO are like this, the ever popular diablo's, Neverwinter Nights, dungeon seiges. Hell most FPS games fit into this category minus the ability to level up.

And which series is the Turn A Gundam from?
Believe the series is named, Turn A Gundam (just something I think I thought I saw, but the Turn A, means a upside down A, dont kill me if I have this wrong).

« on: March 31, 2007, 11:29:41 pm »There were 5 original gundams in Wing, then they got Zero and Epyon, and Deathsythe Hell and Altron. Not even counting the 3 versions of Tallgeese.
So, which ones of those were you considering "convential", or did I miss your point somehow?
anything standard really to the military. Dinns, Buckoo's, basically anything that a standard person would pilot.

« on: March 31, 2007, 07:10:53 pm »You think the other gundams in Wing would be stronger than something like the Strike Freedom? Heavyarms for example, would get it's ass handed to it by any SEED gundam, since their Phase Shift armor blocks conventional, non-beam weaponry. And the Deathsythe Hell seems to have most of it's potiental in defense, with limited ranged attacks at all.
The Strike Freedom has tons big cannons on it, and can send out those laser-bit things to attack from all directions, not to mention its incredibly fast.
Nu Gundam had similar laser-flying around thingers, and like... Amuro pushed an asteriod away from a collision course with the Earth practically alone.
But Wing Zero is definitely the strongest. Not only because it's guns can destroy an entire colony in one blast (that could be dodged), but because the Zero System or whatever reads your oppenent's mind or something. Epyon would probably be in this tier as well, since its supposed to do something similar.
Maybe Kira or Athrun's SEED mode, or Amuro's Newtype ability, would compensate for that, I dunno.
Sorry, I thought we were talking about hero type gundams only. I was talking about the 4 gundams from Wing, not the convential ones. I do however, think strike freedom can give zero a run for his money because kira somehow posses newtype abilities. However, in the end, zero is godlike so.

wing zero would be the strongest. Followed by all the gundams in wing, and the rest follow behind.

« on: March 28, 2007, 05:45:19 pm »Is this a fact? Because SEED Destiny has WAY too many reused scenes, I really doubt Wing has more rehashed scenes than Destiny. I may be wrong though, I haven't seen Wing in like 3 years.Gundam Wing had the best fights....SEED fights were ok but the talking was gay. SEED Destiny had 1 or 2 good fights but most of the rest (actually, about 90% of the show) were rehashed animations from earlier in the show and even from SEED.
Right, if you think that gundams that were invincable and never hit, as a good fight. Wing also used more rehashed scenes then any other gundam.
"Gundams that were invincible and never hit"
You've got to be joking me. What do you think SEED Destiny is? >_> I'll admit that SEED may be better than Wing, but SEED Destiny, hell no. SEED Destiny only did reasonably well because it's SEED's sequel and because well, it's Gundam.Quote from: SentenalAnd Gundam Wing didn't have rehashed animation? It had plenty, and the quality of animation wasn't nearly up to SEED's level.Once again, maybe when comparing it to SEED, but Destiny's animation--except for a few key moments--has incredibly bad, rehashed animation. In fact, I'd say about 60% of the fights are just rehashed animation. I'll even use examples.
Freedom does it's "All weapons unload" attack way too many times in SEED...and way too many times in Destiny as well. Even the Strike Freedom has an edited version of the attack. Freedom always has the same boring moveset which gets annoying fast.
The I. Justice has most of the original Justice's moveset except for a few animations. These new animations are rehashed twice (in the two fights its in), which looks really lame.
Basically the entire Strike Freedom vs. Legend fight is rehashed from SEED.
Destiny has 3 or 4 animations that it repeats in every single fight and gets annoying, old, boring, and stupid really really REALLY fast.
These are the most notable in my opinion. There are others like the impulse stuff, but w/e. I guess there might be a lot in Wing as well, but like i said, I haven't seen it in a while. But that's just sad if it has more rehashing than Destiny.
That comes from me having watched them in the past 3 years and that is what I honestly noticed. I also found destiny not as up to par as seed was though. However, wing is most known for having the strongest gundams there is, especially zero. Practically the only time they were even ever injured was when they fought eachother. The theme I got from wing was "The invinciables". Besides, the women in it were so ugly.
