News Submissions / CT Figurines
« on: February 22, 2011, 03:26:06 am »
Hey Chrono community, just popping in to drop off a valuable discovery. Someone in Square-Enix must have been thinking about CT, because Kotaku is reporting that a four piece set of Chrono Trigger figurines recreating classic moments from the game's artwork are currently available on pre-order. Maybe there's renewed interest in the series? One can only hope...

EDIT: Looks like it's actually a five piece set; not sure why the Marle one isn't being sold with the rest. Various vendors may have various supplies, or something thereabouts.

Have there been any sprites of the new main characters for CE released to the public? If so, I'd like to try and do something like this with them... give it a nice epic, mythic feel.

Indeed, the sprites were actually the starting place for the entire project.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this, things have been a bit hectic on my end.

I've got to say, leave it to someone named after the Chrono series most enigmatic mad scientist to rebuff all possible illusion. Kudos to you, Bekkler. You saw straight through me, and for that I cannot help but acknowledge the superiority of an art major like yourself over an amateur like me.

THE TRUTH:
The image was a Photoshop job, though for those of you who were pointing at the background as proof, you were way off. That was an actual photo taken by Ian Britton (found on FreeFoto.com). My goal was to test out a technique I developed for making realistic stained glass from virtually any image (as well as contribute a bit of fan art to the CT community) and, judging by the votes, enough people thought it was authentic to make my experiment a success!

Compendiumites, you have my thanks for putting up with this little fancy of mine. And, should anyone be so awesome as to ever make actual Chrono Trigger themed stained glass, I would gladly bow down to your awesomeness.

I plan to put up a tutorial on how to do this at some point, so I'll post an update for anyone who's interested. And again, Bekkler, you totally kicked my butt. Bravo!

Well well well! it seems I'm not the only one interested in crossing over these two series! I haven't had a chance to read over everything you've got here, but what I've seen has promise indeed. I promise to post again with a fully developed opinion as soon as I've read the whole thing.

I also started a CT/Metroid crossover fic a while back... haven't worked on it in a few months, but this is making me want to write again. Would you be interested in critiquing what I've got thusfar? I'd be glad to email you my current draft.

As an aside... I found an AWESOME remix of Magus' theme on Newgrounds that has a VERY strong Metroid flavor to it. Hopefully it'll be of some inspiration to your writing: Magus' Midnight. Enjoy!

I'm honestly a bit surprised no one has posted this yet:

And I'm afraid I have to disagree with that statement. CT > SW. Magus could take Darth Vader any day.

Hey Compendiumites! Been a while since I've dropped in to contribute... but this time I've got a real winner of a fanart to share with you!

However... there's a catch. :)

I'm not going to say right away who made this, nor whether this is actual stained glass or just a clever Photoshop job. I wanna hear what you, the unbiased viewers, think. At the end of two weeks I'll post and reveal all the relevant info regarding this and the truth will be known, but until then you'll just have to discuss amongst yourselves.

Let the voting... COMMENCE!

In the meantime, feel free to check out this CT & CC fanart gallery that I stumbled across: CLICK HERE. I found a lot of pictures there that I'd never seen anywhere else, rather high quality stuff too. Enjoy!

EDIT: Oh, and I almost forgot... a little something I made a while back that I've been meaning to show the Compendium. It's part of a big Flash project I started last summer, but haven't yet been able to finish. [CLICK HERE]. Warning: pop culture reference to be expected.

I think it's safe to say that most of us will have our eyes on this until the day it comes out, but let's not forget that this could be the "signal flare" for a new era of fresh life in the Chrono series. To some, those words no doubt ring of empty enthusiasm and hollow hopes, but consider this: the last time Square-Enix touched the franchise at all it was as a nostalgia nod to long-time fans and came coupled with another back-in-the-day title. Not so now. This is Chrono Trigger, standing on its own, strutting onto the stage of arguably the most dominant portable next-gen game system of the moment. This is Chrono Trigger back in the spotlight, rising like a phoenix from the ashes of time to embrace a younger generation of gamers within the folds of its wings. Is there a chance the new add-ons will be gimmicky and underdeveloped? If we're honest with ourselves, yes there is. But there is one inexorable fact that this new re-release embodies, one that simply cannot be ignored.

This is no nostalgic nod. This is Square-Enix acknowledging Chrono Trigger's potential. If this goes well and young gamers embrace it like its 1995 v2.0, then the chances of a new game absolutely skyrocket.

I, for my part, am already planning on doing my part to help draw in the new recruits. I've been out of action lately, but I have currently begun work on a Flash movie to promote the new game. More on that once I have something to showcase.

Polling / Re: If you could change Chrono Cross, how would you do it?

My vote goes to the CT Crew, although Ye Olde Battle System is a close second (who doesn't love double and tripple Techs, am I right?), with Smaller Roster placing in at third.

Bravo! An excellent rendition of the V-Jump art! That's quite a talent you've got there; keep up the good work!

Looks like a great body-build to work from. Can't wait to see where you take it from here! :)

Yeah, that's essentially what Mugen is. I think the original genesis of it was someone hacking a Street Fighter game rom so that custom character data could be added.

Well, through some rather unusual circumstances I ended up chancing across this YouTube video of a MUGEN survival run featuring Magus. Thing is (as you can see in the video) this MUGEN fighter version of Magus didn't just simply apply ripped CT sprites . . . no, these were custom Magus sprites made by someone known as MugenTrigger!

Being the crazy insane Magus fanboy that I am, you can imagine what followed. 8)

And so, it is with great pleasure that I present to the Compendium the following sprite sheet, assembled from MugenTrigger's original file (scroll down for Magus).

...Yes, included in the sheet is a fem-Magus. With green eyebrows. And that's NOT an edit. I dunno about you folks, but that's just unnaturally disturbing to me. It was so absurd that it demanded an equally absurd joke to point it out... but I couldn't come up with one. So instead you have Marle having a Sailor Moon moment and Crono self-narrating in Alya-esqe fashion.

That's almost as messed up as gender-bent green eyebrows Magus, right? :(

Indeed so, Justin. For the curious, you can find a link to a YouTube copy of that video trailer in my first post. Chrono shows up at around 1 minute 30 seconds into the video; watch for him in the lower right corner.
