Chapter 1. Crippling Defeat

December 3rd - 600 AD

Tar Tar rolled over in his sleep. The simple fact was that he could not sleep. The war was over and the entire encampment of Mystic forces knew it. Yet here they lingered on, entrenched in the Denadoro Mountains, surrounded by Allied forces at every mountain pass, fiendishly retreating further and further up the mountain with no end in sight other than defeat. The situation was horrid. The 3rd Mystic War was over in just 2 months with Gen. Ozzie's quick rise to power halted in it's tracks with the sacking of Ozzie's Base of Operations by a band of irregulars as well as the re-mobilization of Allied Forces to prevent any Mystic gains.

In the East, the Allies had stormed the Fort after it had already been sacked and abandoned by the Leadership. In the North, Mystic Tribes and Clans were all laying claim to lead the Heckran Alliance which had all but disintegrated. In the West, only small pockets of Mystic forces remained, and all were trapped and surrounded by Allied forces. The Mystics were trapped in Denadoro, and the coast line with no ships after a failed raid on Porre.

Tar Tar got up, it was early dawn. The column had been ordered to move further up the mountain. All Mystic forces on the mountain were ordered to regroup after their previous loss at the base of the mountain. Their goal was to unite the Mystic columns in a holy defense of the Mountain's Summit. "Useless" Tar Tar though to himself. A hulking 7 Feet, and a massive Goblin build to match it, Tar Tar was not one to admit defeat by nature. However, even he knew the end was at hand.

Just then, word reached the camp via carrier pigeon. The message was from Heckran Headquarters (which was essentially the village now pretending it led the Alliance). The message was short and brief. It read:

Break through the Allied Column and attempt to rendevous with Mystic Units on the Coast to evac back to the homeland.

A look of bewilderment fell upon the soldiers. What good would there be in trying to rush the opposing column and return home? "Most of us would be slaughtered!" One of the soldiers shrieked. Tar Tar knew better. "This can't be suicide. There has to be some secret ploy here" He said to himself.

As per orders, the word was spread to all of the Mystic columns to halt their retreat up the Mountain and try and ram through the enemy lines. The day was early. Clear and Sunny on this day of great blood. Waiting for the signals, the columns lay in anxious wait. Then, the signature Mystic Horn blazed. The Battle Flags risen. The cavalry charging. The infantry rushing.

As anyone looking from afar would notice, the Mystics were doomed from the start. The Allies had brought in experimental catapults to help the War Effort. Man after Man in the Mystic Columns fell victim to the Allies superior weapons. However, a lucky few did manage to find a way to desert the Army and sneak around the Allies. They regrouped at the base of the mountain to discuss their strategy. Tar Tar was among the lucky few.

Immediately, he stepped up and took charge of the situation. "We must regroup with the others and then get back to the homeland" He began. "If we allow ourselves to stay here anymore, we'll fall victim to the Allies coming out of the mountain, and the Porre reinforcements from the South!". With no opposition, the remaining men rallied around Tar Tar and headed for the coast.

It was now night. The day had produced a great deal of deaths. However the lucky few (600 of an Army consisting of  5,000) were crossing the Ocean now on their return home. "God be with of us, and may we live to see many more days to come" Tar Tar said to himself as he finally tossed over and fell asleep.

For some reason Chrono and Co.'s actions in Zeal do not seem to have a tangible impact on Mystics.

Let's take a look at the apocalypse timeline (no changes from Chrono and Co.)

- Mt. Woe never has it's chain severed
- Lavos awaked and goes on rampage
- Zeal falls to earth and starts massive flooding
- Mt. Woe's elevation may spare it from massive flooding.
- Magic wears of and Mt. Woe eventually falls to sea, but some may survive

Then at the Keystone Timeline (changes by Chrono and Co.)

- Mt. Woe chain severed
- Lavos awakened and destroys Zeal
- Zeal debris falls to the Earth and causes flooding
- Mount Woe no longer on a high enough elevation to save it from flooding
- Mystics still appear unchanged between the Apocalypse Timeline and right after Chrono and Co. make an impact on 12,000 B.C.

Could this mean that Mt. Woe is an irrelevant factor?

Humans WILL ALWAYS kill the Reptites if Lavos comes to the planet.
Humans WILL ALWAYS be killed by Reptites if Lavos does not come to the planet.
The reason being that the planet sides against Lavos, bringing what it thinks is the best civilization to this dimension.

So the planet sides with the humans because it knows they can kill Lavos? Usign that argument, the planet could have sided with the Mystics because they probably had the second best chance (behind Chrono and Co.) of killing Lavos at Magus's lair.

many of them could simply be the products of Zealian technology.  Most mystics are vulnerable to magic, or weapons that are particularly tailored to damage mystics, among which that ones that I remember off the top of my head (at least one sword for Frog) are also related to Zeal.  I've generally gotten the impression that Zeal was a kingdom established through warfare, so the early 'mystics' could've been cannon fodder for Zeal.  Bearing magic/tailored weapons they exercise control over the mystics.  Then when the kingdom falls/without magic to maintain control over the mystics, they spread out into the wilds and propagate and evolve as the years go by.

If they were indeed used by Zeal in such a manner, that would certainly give them cause for hating humanity later on.  Since Janus was there, he might also know more particulars for keeping the mystics in line.

But we don't find many of these mystic creatures anywhere in 12,000 B.C. You can make the argument that Mount Woe creatures evolved into Mystics, but the key problem with that theory is that Mt. Woe Creatures (on the whole) don't really resemble 600 A.D. mystics enough to have become them in 13,000 years. Possible ET origins? Probably not, but possible.

Then again, Speckio makes it clear that Magic manifested itself in the form of a Gene. He also states that in Humans, the Magic Trait is recessive. This could potentially mean that Lavos mutated human DNA allowing for Magic, but the trait has become recessive. It's possible that the same happened to early Mystics, but their gene never went recessive and stayed dominant.

Yes. After all, before Lavos...

Quote from: Zealian Man
That's the Sun Keep you see on the
southern continent. A Sun Stone, once
the source of this world's power, was
   kept there.

But when we began using our new
energy source, it was sealed up just
   like the north palace.

They claim we don't need the energy
   of this tired, old planet.

There was the Sun Stone and whatever kept in the Northern Palace (with Safe Helm and Swallow being products of what was kept there) used before the Mammon Machine was built.

And don't forget the Dragonians had their methods too (and never had contact with Lavos or FF at all), with the Elements created for the ones who couldn't.

True.

Considering Mt. Woe has some creatures of the same species as some of the Mystics' (Gargoyles and Stone Imps at least), though those are among the non-magical, so at least it could be said that the non-magical Mystics are descendants of the monsters of ancient times.

Now as for the magical ones, that's the big question. Well, I have always thought that their ability to use magic is related to the planet somehow. Like the Elements of Cross except using your own power instead of an artificial artifact's. And that they learned the whole thing over time. Well, that's how I think it is.

So is getting power through Lavos (Zeal way) just one of several ways to get magic on Earth?

I've always wondered this. The Mystics aren't exactly a "race" but rather a giant coalition of separate races (in the beginning, opposed to humanity), many of which seem able to use magic.

So, why would several different races all posses Magical abilities when humans, the (presumably) first users of magic can no longer do so.

Which leads me to three possibilities for Mystic Magic.

1. Janus/Magus brought it with him when Lavos sent him 12,5?? years in the future
2. The Mystics are somehow harnessing Lavos's energy Unlikely though as they seem to be innate magic users instead of having to use a Mammon Machine like source of power
or
3. The Mystics are not Terrestrial Would explain the very awkward nature they bring, their magic abilities and their seemingly having appeared and evolved as a race between 12,000 B.C. (when Zeal fell, we knew they didn't exist) and the late 500 A.Ds (Let's say Magus was brought 20 years before 600 A.D. giving him time to train and become King of the Mystics)

Any thoughts?

The "foreign travels" of Ozzie, Slash, and Flea got me thinking a bit of making an Unofficial (Official if Crimson Echoes team likes it) Crimson Echoes fan-fic detailing the wherabouts and the timeline changes from the point of view of the Mystics (more specifically: Ozzie, Slash, Flea and a few other characters). This is cross-posted to Fanfiction.net and I hope you enjoy it. Note: A work in progress.

Prologue:  The Mystic Wars

LeReaux got up from his desk, to yawn as well as to stretch his arms. For two months he has slaved, and for two months he has been all but isolated from the rest of his friends and family. Shrouded in secrecy from the rest of his fellow peers, LeReaux worked and toiled in his new dwelling inside the Royal Guardia Dungeon.

One might ask how such a respected Professor and Nobleman could have ended up in this position of work and enslavement. LeReaux, better known as Professor Vincent LeReaux, had immersed himself in knowledge and the written word since he was a small child. Growing up in the town of Dorino, he often witnessed first-hand the skirmishes between the Mystics and Humans in the run up to the First of the several Mystic Wars.

Leaving home early to escape the Madness, LeReaux quickly found himself in the service of the Crown of Guardia. However, much to his anguish, his service was as the Military Historian. It seemed as though LeReaux’s attempts to leave the battlefield only drew him to a place where the battlefield was front and center.

However, LeReaux did not dwell here long. He soon found himself far from the talk of war and politics in the Guardian Mountains north of Guardia. Here, he (along with his colleagues) set out to implement Royal Charter 60210 to establish His Majesty’s University in an attempt to not only implement the largest fighting force, but the smartest one.

In his letter to King Guardia, LeReaux had pleaded for the Charter with the simple reasoning:

     My Liege,

How  can we continue our resolve to fight against our hardened adversaries if we choose to put our Swords and Armor above our Books and Knowledge? The Mystic foes have out-classed us in several ways including their innate use of Wizardry, and their powerful natural boundaries, but the few successes Guardia has seen in this war have resulted through our superior tacticians and Naval Power. But the only war to perfect on these two advantages we have is to educate a new breed of minds to set forth a vision for battlefield success through the use of the mind. This is why I, once again, request that his majesty would be visionary enough to ensure not only that the Kingdom survives this war, but for Hundreds of years to come by establishing a Guardia University System

        Sincerely,
-   Vincent LeReaux, Guardia Royal Military Historian

But one would still have the basic question, “How did he end up in here?”.  That story takes us to a dark night when King Guardia officially recognized the Third Mystic War as over and declared victory against the forces of the Heckran Alliance.

LeReaux celebrated along with the others in his family, but pondered to himself, “Guardia would collapse without some form of external fear keeping the rulers in power.” These words would turn out to be prophetic and two Guardian Knights burst through LeReaux’s front door and started dragging the decorated Professor off into the night.

He quickly found himself in the Royal Guardia Dungeon in the presence of a Knight Captain. “You will illustrate Guardia’s military success for the last 20 years!” He shouted. “We shall never survive a day without or citizens either fearing or in awe of Guardia’s supremacy. That is why King Guardia has himself commissioned that you create a History of the greatness of Guardia during the Mystic Wars to be preserved in the Guardia Archives as well as re-printed and distributed as Royal doctrine.” He said. “You have 8 weeks. We will give you food, shelter away from distractions, and necessary materials. Do not disappoint the crown” He finished as he began bringing down the cell gate.

Now LeReaux, finished with his Royal order, began urging for the guard to come. “I have finished your requests” He said in a voice that had grown monotone in the last few weeks. “Now undo my shackles and take me away from this hell…” He said, his voice trailing off as he witnessed the Guard undoing his chain.

As LeReaux departed the Dungeon, the Guard reminded him, “You were kept in Royal Study and labored for the past two months out of love for your majesty. Understand?” LeReaux silently nodded his head and departed the Dungeon Gates.

The Guard thought to himself, “Shouldn’t be any superior in here until the morning. I might as well look over his work.” The Guard went inside the cell and began looking over LeReaux’s work. He began flipping the pages to what he thought to be the more ‘interesting’ parts of the war.

Chapter 7: Building a Coalition

   Section 1: The Mystic Juggernaut

As the Mystic Juggernaut continued to gain steam in the late 580’s in the after math of the First Mystic War, the Kingdom of Guardia stood by and saw tribe after tribe of Guardia aligned Mystic Tribes fall prey to the totalitarian march of the Heckran Alliance (see: The Aftermath; Chapter 6, Section 1) under the command of the Wizard Magus and Decorated General Ozzie  (see: Principal Commanders of the First Mystic War; Chapter 5, Section 3).

It was not long until the victorious Allies began to grow worried of the new growing Mystic threat. In a letter to King Guardia, Grand Marshal Bandeau Marcel of the Porre Legion detailed his worries:

“King Guardia,
Every Day I grow worried by the ever increasing Mystic Hostilities. If we do not act fast, the sum of our fears at the height of the Great Mystic war will surely be realized in a Second Mystic war. Any action by Porre cannot be substantiated militarily without support by the Guardian Commonwealth of Nations. “

It was clear to Grand Marshal Marcel that the Mystic Threat needed to be confronted, however the Guardian Commonwealth of Nations (see: Guardia Territorial holdings; Chapter 1, Section 2) would not confront the Mystics as it was well known that many Mystic sympathizers in Dorino would certainly require Marshall Order by Guardia which would end up diverting troops from any potential Mystic front.

As the Mystics began their savage and barbaric destruction of dissidents, the only nation to watch with the intent to not allow the Mystic threat to grow out of control was Choras. King Lear of Choras quickly reigned in a Provocative approach against the Mystics under the rule of Lord Magus.

………………. "

The Guard kept flipping pages until he got to section 4 of the same chapter. “This should be good” he said to himself.
"
Section 4: Rallying up the Troops

It was a sad day indeed. As mourners began their procession at the Choras’s famed Collateral Palace to honor the late King Lear, many came to the funeral with a sense of vengeance. After King Lear had been struck down by a Mystic Assailant, the state of Choras had gone down hill (as you read in the previous section).

By the time Prince Casputain had finally arranged a burial for his father (and a coronation for himself), Choras was now embroiled in what was the run-up to a Civil War. Prince Casputain’s first act of reinstating the credentials of the Mystic Ambassador sent furious crowds of Lear supporters to the streets of Choras.

Then, Prince Casputain further angered them when he chose not to invoke the Lear Doctrine
(see: King Lear and the Mystics, Chapter 7, Section 2) when the Mystics under Magus savagely massacred the last Choras-backed Mystic stronghold.

Indeed, the Casputain reign was opposed by many, including the ruling elite. Guardia and Porre did not turn a blind eye to the situation in Choras however. The possibility of Choras becoming a Mystic ally was unacceptable to King Guardia or The Porre Council. "

“Yea Yeah.” The Guard said flipping the pages. “This guy’s a real book-worm. Anything else in here?” The Guard said turning to the last page of the chapter.

       "        ………
With the deployment of Guardian Royal Vessels off Choras’s coast and Porrean Strike Teams assembled, Choras digged in, ready for war.

The first shots of war came on April 15th, 586 A.D. The HMS Truce was patrolling off the coast of Choras when officers began jumping overboard with the onset of a fire, which gave the appearance of Arson. “The Damn Choras bastard lit up the place!” Boomed on Guardian Soldier. “Time to take the fight right up their arses!” Echoes another one, who at this point was floating in the water.

The situation quickly defused when various Allied forces began their assault of Choras without the command from Guardia or Porre. It did not matter for the Commanders on the ground however. The time to strike was now, when moral was still high.

Unknown to the Allies was the extensive Rebel organization which had already laid the ground-work for any Coalition Assault on Choras. As Porre strike teams quickly began taking positions in the Town-Square, they were greeted with rebels having already detained Choras Royal Guards chanting “The Liberation of Choras”

Very soon, Choras Castle fell and leaders from Guardia, Porre, as well as the Mystic Exiles you read about, met alongside the defeated Choras leaders in what would be known as the Choras Accords.

The Accords laid out the following 4 fundamental principles that would steer the direction of Choras for the next 15 years.

1.   The Monarchy of Choras shall herby be abolished and be temporarily replaced by  Guardia Marshal Law until it is deemed possible for Choras to take up self-government
2.   The Nations of Porre and Guardia reserve the right for full access to Choras coast and land for all military purposes
3.   Choras will be obligated to act as a protectorate of both Guardia and Porre if such a need arises
4.   Choras shall be prohibited from any diplomacy with the Heckran Alliance that is not conducted through Guardia

The harsh terms of these treaties would lay doom for Pro-Mystic Chorasers who had secretly been inclined to join the Heckran Alliance. However, as you will read in the next chapter, the Heckran Alliance soon dissipated and was replaced the Holy Mystic Kingdom when Lord Magus began his annexation of members of the Heckran Alliance and his own Kingdom as the seat of power. "

The Guard looked up.  The sun’s rays began arcing into the Dungeon signaling the end of his shift. He got up, took the completed Account on the Mystic Wars and walked out of the Dungeon to hand the final copy to his superiors.

Actually accents can be manipulated at a young age. For example, the child of immigrants will usually have a flawless accent but the immigrants themselves will have a hard time having a "proper" accent. Strictly speaking, accents would be influenced by what the child experiences at a young age.

It could be likely that Lavos (who crosses Time) could have foreseen the efforts of the heroes to repel him and may have used the Black Omen as a last ditch effort to deter them.

This is the first of a three parter called 'The Mystic civil war'

Part 1 - Rise of the Heckran Clan
Part 2 - The Founding of Medina
Part 3 - Old Hatreds, New Alliances

It has been 3 years since Guardia's victory over the Mystics in the Great War and the Mystic Alliance has splintered and fractured in the years since. The two Mystic contents have been forgotten and treated as the forsaken nations. The Mystics are no longer considered a super-power by any stretch of the war. Guardia, Porre, and Choras are the powers leading the new world be researching steam, and naval power. The various Mystic tribes fight over the remaining forests and fresh-water, while the rest of the world researches steam and water-purification methods. The fate of the Mystic nation is a bleak one.

  April 5th, 603AD

The Heckran clan ravaged the northern plains of the Western-Mystic continent. After the fall of Magus's Empire, the Western-Mystic nations fell into ruin after all wealth and power transitioned to the East. Now, scrambling to find the resources to revive his shattered clan, Lord Heckran leads his party into some of the remaining woods of what used to be the base of Magus's Castle.

Has his clan starts to fan out across the woods, Lord Heckran thinks back to the glory days of the Grand Mystic Empire under Lord Magus. The Heckran Clan had been the back-bone of the Mystic army, always being the Van-guard of an invasion. It was the Heckran Clan that had fought the forces of Guardia on the Zenan Bridge and it was the Heckran clan that had sacked Dorino for resources on their march back to Magus's Lair.

Lord Heckran was furious when he had first found out that the de-facto Mystic leader Ozzie, after the disaster at Magus's Lair, had signed a peace-accord with Guardia and had fled to the East like a coward. However, Heckran decided to count his blessings by the sheer fact that the Heckran clan was at sea during the disaster at Magus's Lair.

"Sir, we've caught one of the Kasmir Clan's agents!" Barked a Mystic Goblin in the woods. Heckran quickly scrambled to find the captured spy.

"So, you dare spy on the mighty Heckran Clan you tiny imp!" Heckran shouted at the spy. "Sir you misunderstand I was merely..." the Imp began before Heckran silenced him with his blade.

"Scour the forest to find anymore of that Bastard Kasmir's men!" Heckran yelled at his forces. "Yes sir!" "Right away sir" the troops responded as they began scouring through the woods. Before long, one of Heckran's scouts had found a Kasmir Clan base camp along the banks of a nearby river. He immediately reported back to Lord Heckran.

"Sir, Kasmir's men are using the forest as cover to gain food and water from the river's banks! They're draining our resources!" The Scout informed Heckran. "Hmph, an interesting development" Heckran responded. "We'll wait until night fall. Then, torch the camp and kill any survivors" Heckran said with pure savagery in his voice.

  Early April 6th 603AD
The sight of fire illuminated the light sky as Heckran's forces carried out his orders and began torching the Kasmir Clan's base camp along the river. "Burn the damn thing!" ordered one of Heckran's lieutenants.

Several Jugglers and Mages popped out of the tents on fire before quickly succumbing to their injuries. Most of Heckran's forces knew that in a head-on confrontation, Kasmir's magic-oriented forces would have the upper-hand against Heckran's melee oriented fighters.

Lord Heckran stood up on a nearby hill to congratulate his forces on a victory. "This is a great day for our clan. For too long has the Kasmir clan stolen our resources and cut down our woods. It is time we exacted our revenge. We must strike them a blow they will not recover from! We must march towards the Kasmir clan's capitol!" Lord Heckran shouted with authority.

    April 10th
After the long grueling march to the Kasmir capitol, the Heckran clan stop to rest and analyze  the enemy's defenses.

"Sir, the enemy is using part of the ruins in Magus's castle as a base! They're are sentries scattered about the forests as well as an army of Mages and Jugglers assembled in the ruins. We believe that Kasmir is hold up in the ruins surrounding himself with loyal followers" A Hunch reported to Lord Heckran.

"Excellent. We should probably formulate an attack by..." Heckran was cut-off by the appearance of a hungry man in the bushes. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the man was the Fmr. General Slash.

He was quickly recruited by the Heckran clan as a commander to storm the Kasmir Capitol. It was learned that in the months following his release from Guardia prison, Slash had fled into the forests after being repeatedly hunted down by Kasmir's troops.

  April 11th
The plan had been formulated. Heckran's had taken most of the sentries the night before, thereby preventing them from alerting the enemy about Heckran's presence. The Hunches and Goblins would storm the ruins and provoking a drawn out battle. With the advantage of surprise, Kasmir's forces would be taken by storm. Also to their advantage, Kasmir's magic troops performed better in long distance combat and were disadvantage in a hand-to-hand showdown. While the Hunches and Goblins would distract Kasmir's forces into defending the center, the outlaws would swarm the flanks and quickly dispatch of the few Kasmirians guarding the flanks and quickly surround Kasmir's main battle group.

After that, Lord Heckran accompanied by Flash would charge a special ops unit tasked with finding and killing Kasmir.

  A Few Hours Later
The plan was in action. The Hunches and Goblins were going toe to toe with Kasmir's mages. With ease, the outlaws took the flanks, but the plan encountered a problem.

As the battle was progressing, the ground began to shake and the entire ruins began to collapse. At the hour of Heckran's triumph, an Earth-quake had to complicate matters!

Most of Kasmir's and Heckran's forces were cut off from each-other after the Earth-quake subsided. Heckran climbed atop a tree and promptly addressed his troops. "Men, wherever you may be, whether you are cut off from the main force or not, kill every Kasmirian you can!"

The final stage of the plan, to lead a special ops force proceeded as planned. Slash and Heckran charged through the ruins to find Lord Kasmir. As they neared the sight where scouts had reported Kasmir to be, they were presented with an odd scenario. There was fire before them and several dead Kasmirians.

They moved on and found a Lord Kasmir strapped to a pillar with his mouth shut. "Looking for someone?" A voice shouted from the treetops. The figure descended from the trees and revealed himself to be his/her bisexualness Fmr. General Flea him/herself.

As Slash began informing Flea of the situation, Heckran approached Kasmir. "No! Don't hurt me!" Kasmir begged as Heckran approached. "I meant nothing of the base-camp at the Northern-Plains! Don't kill me!" Kasmir begged before Heckran brought a Blade down on him.

Kasmir climbed on top of the pillar and addressed the men on the battle field "Kasmirians and Members of the Heckran clan alike! The Bastard Kasmir is dead! Those of the Kasmir Clan, you are welcome to join the Heckran clan as our underlings or face certain-death. The choice is yours. As of this moment, the Western Mystic Continent is united under one rule! Outlaws! Spread the word to the smaller clans that they have an ultimatum to join the new Nation of Heckran or be slaughtered! Now Mystics shall be united under one rule!" Heckran thunderously shouted to a chorus of applause from both Heckran clansmen and Kasmirians.
