Apologies if that bothers you. I can edit it. I wrote it out of habit.

Most people pronounce Crono as Chrono. In that respect, phonetically, Krono makes more sense to me, so I used that instead of Crono when there was a 6 character limit.

You are correct though, Crono is the default so I should be using that.

I like the Schala with scythe sketch the most. It also seems like something Janus would do, though he would probably be trying to free her and have a mishap (as magic gone wrong seems to happen to him). She sacrificed herself to save him, so I am not sure she would agree or even allow (if she had any control merged with the time devourer) him to just sacrifice herself, but I can see complications going wrong in a rescue attempt.

Also a Janus fused time devourer sounds terrifying.

If I recall correctly the only character stated to having the aura/scent of the black wind is Crono.

The main thing unique about Crono is what transpires with the Chrono Trigger. Many time travel but I think he is the only one that is removed from time itself (though I suppose that is open to interpretation on what the Chrono Trigger actually does).

In that regard I thought it was Janus sensing that Crono no longer belongs to this existence, or something else space-time related.

Edit: Changed Krono to Crono. My apologies if that caused confusion.

A printed copy would be neat, albeit less feasible for some.

A digital copy however would be something that everyone on the forum could participate in and own a copy of once done. If we made it something that can be shared (such as Google docs) we can even do updates every couple of years with changes to the information. Then we could have volumes and editions like a real compendium.

I think everything on here not directly related to anything in the game is covered under fair use. They can't Cease and Desist our thoughts and musings. Fan art is usually safe. Anything related to the games worked on is probably a no-go, thought I feel they should at least get a mention.

I mostly agree with ThatGuy on this. What she says can be interpreted many ways, so I definitely understand how you got this impression. I always interpreted it more like ThatGuy, where she was worried about metaphysical place in the world, not his physical one.

I agree that Doan's presence is really the thing that is inconsistent. Unless we agree that the changes caused split timelines across multiple dimensions. Several plot inconsistencies support this, but based on how the characters interact and think I do not think this was the intention of the developers.

6
Chrono Cross has two dimensions, one where Serge is dead and one where he is not. This sets precedent for dimensional splits. In Chrono Trigger Lavos sends people through dimensional gates in the "original" timeline and when Krono/adult Janus are meddling with affairs. Maybe in one timeline Melchior got to him and in another he didn't.

I get Chrono Cross implies that the only reason the timelines split is because Serge is special, but that reason I never felt was concretely supported by the game. Plus there are minor plot inconsistencies in Chrono Trigger unless multiple timelines can exist, so the is support in both games for this I think.

Admittedly, once you add multiple timelines things get much messier to keep track of.

I have been thinking about this myself. While the most likely answer is developer oversight in the Nadia paradox that is not much fun, so let the thought exercises commence!

I never thought of it that way, but the Nadia paradox being because they do not have time travelers immunity yet is an interesting idea. I also propose the following ideas:

01) The end of time is where the main characters learn magic as well. I could argue that it is creating a magical connection with the planet/dream/universe, what have you, that gives Time Traveler's Immunity. The Gurus exist in their new time periods regardless of what you do. Magus is a very powerful mage by the time he becomes the prophet. Schala ends up in darkness beyond time. Queen Zeal ends up existing in multiple timelines simultaneously. There are probably holes here, as I am sure I am missing people that would debunk this.

02) Once the party reaches the End of Time they are dimension hopping as much as they are time traveling. If you defeat Lavos before he emerges from the planet I think an elder from the future still shows up at the end. How is that possible? How can R66-Y return to his world as it existed after the apocalypse if it was prevented unless there was still access to the timeline when it happened. So in that respect Crono and crew could be dealing with a different Kingdom of Zeal than in the first timeline that led to the original events. Admittedly this falls apart a little with the Black Omen. Unless it can exist in all timelines and dimensions. That would imply it is existing outside space time. It is connected to Lavos though.

I find it fascinating that someone mentions veterans returning, as I myself just recently felt drawn to revisit this forum again. I was around when the cease and desist hammer came down and it did get dark for a while. I think I haven't been around in five or six years...but I digress.

I am one of the people that liked Chrono Cross. It had issues, but I feel like a well done patch would help a lot (akin to the restored content patch for KOTOR 2). I am not sure a full blown remake needs to be done, though I also wouldn't be opposed to it.

Chrono Trigger is a great game, but I do not think I would call it perfect. It has some plot inconsistencies, even if they are minor.

As far as a direct sequel, I think good points are brought up about the vastness of the world created. We saw in Chrono Cross the unintended consequences of fighting Lavos and changing time. There is a lot that could be done there. Especially since time and dimensional travel are canon.

Lavos is very intriguing. And it sucking the life force of the planet implies more than just eating minerals. I would imagine in would need to target planets with "life" to reproduce, though I suppose that is a debate for another time.

What if Lavos wasn't natural, but created? Maybe there is a planet in the universe going through its own energy crisis. The people delve in dark science (or magic or both) and shady means to solve it. You play an RPG style game (do you help? hinder? both?) and the end result might be the creation and expulsion of Lavos into the universe. The entire game could be unrelated to the Chrono verse except for that end and it would still be a powerful connection. It seems reasonable that if the planet in the Chrono games has Balthasar that there are other people willing to meddle with space-time out there as well.

Got it. So if you are basing it on home world and events that created the situation are being nullified (like fate) how are you handling people that died in home world? Do they stay dead, or are they now alive, but people are going to remember them dying? Are they going to remember dying?

That...would actually be an interesting topic to get into. I would it would drive people crazy if, while alive, they had this vivid memory of dying that kept replaying in their mind over and over...

There is the potential for many other things to work with. For example, that rich artist in another world that is a poor artist in home world. So he is still a moral guy that is poor, but now has memories of being rich and all the things it got him. Would he be glad he did what he did, or would he be tempted by that greed and now feel regret?

So many possibilities. You'll have a lot of material to work with if nothing else. I am getting very interested in how you plan to develop things now.

Yeah, I know it has been over a year since the thread was posted on, but I dislike starting new threads for just one thought. You clarified how you interpreted the meaning of the newer translation to fit your theory, and I thank you for the speedy reply.

While the looser wording of the newer translation was able to lead to different interpretations and was more flexible in this case, I wonder if there are other cases where it could work against existing theories? That is not really the point of this article though, so I will not get into it.

So, if the re-translation is that different, does anyone know how it is translated in the DS version of CT (is it the same as the SNES version, or was it re-worded)?

Also, if it is now based on time period, how much time constitutes the "same" time period? Technically Chrono, Marle, and Lucca all went into time the first time at different periods. In order for this theory to work would everyone at Chronopolis have to be sent through time at exactly the same time (down to an infinitely small number) or is there some leeway? If there is leeway then where is the line drawn? A second, minute, hour, day, year?

I am intrigued by your task and think it will be an interesting read. Especially considering all the possible combinations of characters that can result (since there are two versions of many characters and the corrected time line would only have one). Do you already have a version picked for your story, or is that part still open to debate among fans? You could always set up polls for characters and people to explain why they think one version of a character is more appropriate.

At least with characters where one is dead in a world it would be easy to pick, since there is only one living to base it off of (though interpreting the correct time line of events to be that a character did actually die may be an interesting twist if used properly).

That newer translation, if it is correct, does not make sense then, at least not in a way to support your theory. If any number of people from the same period can time travel without being taken to the End of Time, then it should not have happened to Chrono and company because at the time Chrono, Marle, and Lucca are all from the same time period. Only Robo is from a different time period (Frog and Ayla are not with you at that point in time).

In order for that translation to work in game would be if it meant that if you have more than three people and at least one of them is from a different dimension then you end up in the End of Time. Still, it is a stretch, I think the original translation fits the game better.

Actually, Radiant Dawn is also a Wii game over there.

I did not realise that, my mistake. I had read that when it was designed it was intended to be a game cube game. Either I misread it or it was converted to a Wii game everywhere.

Thank you for correcting me.

However, I suspect Zaulche's original point had more to do with the immersiveness of the environment provided by combining these details than whether or not his game of choice really was the first one to provide each one individually.

Right, I was talking about how much immersive the game is. While I have seen many games with food I believe Ultima Underworld is still the only game I played where food was required or you died. I may have to look into this Rogue game you mention if it is similar in nature.

As far as Fire Emblem, it started on the NES, then SNES, GBA, DS, and the Game Cube and Wii. As it has already been mentioned several of the GBA and DS games are remakes of older Fire Emblem Games. The two on GBA I really liked, more so than the original remake on the DS.

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are good, so if you have a Wii and can play both games I would recommend them. Keep in mind in Japan they were both Game Cube Games, so even though the second was ported to America as a Wii game they were meant to be played together and it is identical graphically.

I thought Marathon was the first game that allowed you to look up and down? Or was that just the first shooter?

I checked out Marathon on Wikipedia and it says it came out in 1994, two years after Ultima Underworld. Therefore, I would say that Marathon is the first shooter that lets you look up and down, but not the first game.
