Special Event Polling / Re: Rate Cross Characters 32: Razzly

Character Design: One of the coolest character designs in Chrono Cross, IMO, Razzly's design is both quirky and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Combat Usefulness: Her magic and tech skills are devastating. It's also notable that she is one of the few characters in the game that have a triple tech. To be fair, the god-awful HP and defensive stats are a bit of a hindrance for Razzly. Her magic stat is off the charts, though, so maybe her frailty is necessary for balance.

Tilt: Razzly has a fair bit of character development, and offers you some useful insight in certain scenes, which is nifty. She doesn't have a profound effect on the plot, but she's fun to have around.

Final Grade: B.

Sarcastic though I am, I actually completely agree with Chao on this one. If it's his honest opinion that Poshul deserves an A, based entirely on character Tilt factor, then that is totally fine.

Thank you. There are 3 categories, and I happen to love Poshul as a whole - her design appeals to me, I have always found her to be useful in combat, and her tongue-in-cheek, non-serious, "comedic relief" personality type speaks to me as well. She's just so quirky and out-of-place in this game, and I love characters like that. Cait Sith (FF7), Quina (FF9), Chiepoo (Suikoden IV)... all favorites of mine. In my opinion, these types of characters are the best ones. Some people like the "badass", no-nonsense types like Karsh and Sephiroth and such, and that's fine, too. I can't stress enough that we are given more than one poll option for a reason.

On the topic of objectiveness; Even objectiveness is in the eye of the beholder in this situation. After all, who is the mighty being that decides that Poshul deserves a C, objectively? Emotions told me to give her an A, but honestly, I thought she deserved a B. And in the end, that's the grade she got from me. So yes, I was being objective. You can even try and prove me wrong if you wish. Have fun with that, though.

How can you be objective and still give Poshul a B? That has favoritism written all over it...wait, you DO write that...If Poshul isn't supposed to play a serious or important role in the game than Poshul should STAY AN NPC (and at best only get a C)!!!

Again, who is the judge of that? According to your viewpoint, Poshul should only get at best a C. But your opinion is no more valid than mine in this debate, and there is no right or wrong answer. Obviously, if you like a character, you are going to give them a higher score, and such is the case with my rating of Poshul. If she is my favorite character in the game, why should she not get a high score from me? If I dislike Karsh, why should I give him an A? This is a poll for a reason. If which characters are good and which are bad were clear cut facts and not debatable, there would be no need for a poll, now would there? I don't have to sit here and rationalize to you why I like the things that I like, and frankly I don't care if you don't understand or agree.

Character Design: Cheeky, quirky, funny, and cute. Poshul is a charming character.

Combat Usefulness: If you use her throughout the game, Poshul is much more of a tank and physical powerhouse than her image implies. Not as deadly of a pure attacker as someone like Karsh, but it's notable that Poshul on average has a higher hit-point rating than Serge and can do very notable damage on the physical side when trained. A lot of people are oblivious to this, since they shelf Poshul after the early stages of the game.

Tilt: Poshul doesn't have much of a backstory to speak of, but she doesn't need one. If you recruit her in the very beginning before you leave for home-world, she adds a lot of color and personality to an otherwise dreary section of the game, and it's also noteworthy that she is the only character that you can recruit before being teleported to Another World. Speaking of which, I've found that having her around after being teleported to Another can be rather comorting, because it feels like even though all the chaos of the game, you always have a little piece Home World with you in Poshul and all of her comedic goodness. XD Poshul is just a tongue-in-cheek character, and some people blast her for it, not realizing that she isn't supposed to play a serious and important role in the game - there are plenty of other characters to do that if you wish (though I generally don't like the generic, angsty "badass" characters that are all carbon copies of one another). Having Poshul in my party is always a delight.

Final Grade: B. Poshul is my favorite character in the game and as such SHOULD have gotten an A from me, but I'm trying to be objective here.

Well, I wouldn't say it's perfect. I agree with everything you said other than that. Please, quoting me and then calling the game perfect is not helping my argument.

Please quote the exact part of my post, where I said, specifically, that Cross is perfect, and then we'll talk. I defended the parts of the game that were being criticized (and wrongfully so) by pointing out that Cross is a game that was never intended to focus on character development. If you want character development, you're looking in the wrong place with Cross. CC is more open-ended and less in-depth than Trigger on purpose - this was not a mistake on the developers part, and I think it's safe to say that it worked for most people. So the idea of 44 PC's in a game didn't appeal you in particular? Boo-hoo, let's all complain about it incessantly nearly 10 years after the game's release.

And yes, I do win, because in the end, all of your whining will be in vain since it's not going to change a damn thing about the game.

RPGs in the style of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are not meant to be games where you have that sort of control over characters. That's not how they work. They're supposed to be purely about the story with the characters highly involved in every little aspect, and as such the game suffers from having so many characters, because the ones that did truly matter suffered greatly, and for what? NeoFio? Funguy? Mojo? Come on!

According to what? Is there some kind of RPG god that sets all of these rules? The fact that games like Chrono Cross and Suikoden exist totally disproves your point. Chrono Cross does not = Final Fantasy, and it doesn't = Chrono Trigger, either. Character development was apparently not meant to be very important in this game, or else there would have been more of it. It was a different type of RPG from Trigger, that focused more on variety and freedom of choice, and it worked for what it was. The fact that every character didn't have 30 hours of backstory didn't stop of it from being hailed by critics and fans as one of the best RPG's ever.

If you want freedom of choice with your characters, go play a game that allows you to create characters. There are plenty of good ones out there.

If you want to play an RPG with a small and invariable cast, than Cross probably isn't your game - but there are plenty of good Chrono fangames out there. Or, you can try Final Fantasy. You're basically telling me 'screw off and play something else if you don't like it', but that applies much more to you in this situation, since you're the one complaining.

Cross has already been made, and I will continue to enjoy it for many years to come, while you continue to bitch about it. But the fact is, it isn't going to just magically change into your dream CT sequel, so I win in the end. Keep moping.

So... let me get this straight. There is a fan-edit of CC being made that only includes the characters that are deemed "good enough" by the community? Whatever floats their boats, I say. I think it's a horrible idea and I would never play it, but if that's what they want to do, let them.

A huge factor in my love for Chrono Cross is the freedom that I have to make any character I want seem important to the plot if I choose to. When I play, Poshul is a main character. When others play, she might not be in the story at all. Such is the beauty of Chrono Cross... You can play it however you want, unlike other RPG's, where you are forced to use certain characters and play a certain way. In Chrono Cross, your gameplay experience is tailored by YOU, and to take that away is to ruin the essence of the game.

But whatever, do as you wish. I just think it's a disastrous idea if I've ever heard one. I don't see the point in making a less flexible and variable version of a masterpiece of a game, just to cater to the minimalists and CT fanboys.

Special Event Polling / Re: Rate Cross Characters 27: Orlha
« on: September 24, 2007, 05:15:53 pm »
Character Design: Her design unique, and when I first saw the images of all of the CC characters before I played the game, she was one of the ones that caught my eye, for some reason. Attractive, yet dangerous... reminds me a bit of a blonde, pig-tailed Tifa Lockheart.

Combat Usefulness: From what I have played of her, she is excellent in combat, being able to deal large amounts of damage with her physical attacks.

Tilt: Her backstory was very vague... It was never explained how she and her sister were separated into alternate dimensions. If this were elaborated on, she would have been a much deeper and more intriguing character. Also, she should've been introduced as a relevant character earlier in the game, so that she would've had more time to develop this interesting backstory of hers. This is what really holds Orlha back as a character, and I would've given her a higher score otherwise.

Final Grade: C
