Site Updates / Re: CuteLucca Auctions CT Collection
« on: June 30, 2009, 07:26:12 pm »
No, no, no.  Its not ROM as in 'illegally pirated game' its ROM as in 'the base game files from the preproduction phase'  the ROM cartridge I have is an OFFICAL CT ITEM released by Square to stores in Japan for people to play to try out the game.  It's basically the store display model of the game, and it has a TON of really interesting differences from the final cartridge.

You actually think I'd be trying to sell a pirated game cart for $200???
Weird how I never heard this term before. I also never read anything about it in compendium. Anywhere where I can read the differences?

What is a ROM cartridge?

Huh, isn't the japanese CT cartridge a bit overpriced? I got mine for something like 8 dollars and it was in mint condition.

Not a fan of the new equipment names. They don't seem in the spirit of CT, and some of them seem too outlandish and try hardy. Also, armors should've been clearly labelled as such, rather than "Inferus" for example, have "Infernus plate" or mail or vest in it same with helmets.
I disagree. The equip names always felt CT when I looked at them =/.

So okay, it's finished. Good job guys, probably one of the few fangame RPGs that are actually done. The first for the Chrono universe. Congrats! =D

Now 2 weeks ago I promised to comment on each video, BUT, I realized that I'd have to watch CE again for 11 hours and I simply don't want to do it right now xD. However, I'll comment on the things I can remember off the top of my head:

About maps:
- Most new maps were faulty, they had either:
* Bad tile placement
* Too empty at parts
- Usage of glitchy tiles. ok I'm talking about the destroyed ocean palace and that last dungeon (which was indeed awesome) but you could have avoided using glitches. They look wrong, especially in the fangame realm.
- The glitches used in the 1000AD map, though those were minor and in a way they were done right
- Did I mention how awesome Dalton's castle was? Still I wanted more monsters in there, or at least in different places

- Lack of new sprites
- Lack of new tiles
- Lack of new graphics overall. New graphics make the game more attractive, and it helps fix problems like glitches. =p

- Lack of new music
- Lack of new sound effects, though this is minor
- Changing music too much. Like, some videos ago there was a scene where we had 3 songs in the same dialog
- Some songs simply didn't fit the scenes imo.
- The 2300AD song in the 1000AD map felt wrong because of the snowstorm effect

- Battles:
- Techs:
* Robo had waaay too many new techs compared to others
* Characters shouldn't have the techs from the old games. I'd say it's ok if you changed the animations or only kept the classic ones like Cyclone for Crono, etc. But keeping them all is kinda boring. "Hey I leveled, what tech did I get now? Oh, Spincut... again...". It's no fun and feels too fangamey.
* Double Techs! Triple Techs! I've seen 0 of them in the videos xD. You just killed the best point of the CT battle system xD
- Monsters. There weren't any new monsters. I mean, we had bosses like Kasmir but I expected and overhaul of the monsters, even if just changing palettes for some of them.
- Bosses: Some bosses felt just wrong. I can't remember right now but I remember some boss fights where the bosses were equivalent to Imps.
- Battle placement. A great number of battles required the characters to move whole screens in order to fight, and it just feels wrong.

- I disliked every Glenn line. I don't know why, maybe I'm just used to Woolsey's Glenn?
- At the beginning of the game where you see 384309 things happening at the same time, it scares the player.
- Some of the names felt not Chrono, like Ashley. Though I liked most names
- The dreamtime (or whatever it was called) felt off. Maybe I expected new graphics, dunno. The battle that occurred there felt rushed.
- Some things inevitably felt fanficsy, but that's because of the nature of the game
- Dalton shouldn't have died. He's just not the kind of person who should die in an RPG (then again I never pictured him destroying Guardia)
- Marle killing Cambyses (or whatever he was called) with poison felt completely not Chrono. You should have made them just make him give up or lose a battle, but death by poison is so wrong
- King Zeal was cool
- I liked Crono getting mad over dead Marle in reptite timeline. I didn't like Crono saying "Die" or whatever he said after that though
- I didn't like Crono saying most things he said (yeah, I know)
- Sidequests felt completely rushed. Go there, kill X, receive Y. Go there, find Spekkio
- Spekkio battles lacked Spekkio music
- Lucca liking Crono is just a No imo
- Kino dying could be cool, but we just saw him there going off and never got any details iirc
- Prehistory had so few stuff to do
- Ayla was unplayable for too much time imo
- The possibility of Ayla dying is cool, but since Ayla didn't do anything epic etc the players easily wouldn't be compelled to save her life
- The Cedric dude using the Flame to kill people felt so wrong. Specially when the players were on his side. I liked the Reptite timeline Cedric more =(
- Last boss should have been 3 fights, not 2 ;D

There are more things but I'd have to rewatch the whole thing. Damn how I wish I were a beta tester so I could have said this before. =p

Nice game/hack, I liked a lot of it and it definitely was fun to watch it. Will post again once I remember more stuff (either that I liked or disliked). Ah, yeah, obviously by now everyone agrees that 98% became more like 90%, right? ;o

- Guardia's fall felt wrong, specially with the Mystics siding with Porre. Some things there also felt rushed "hey we are partyvan we break in and kill king in 2 seconds"
- Most important: As much as I like Gurren Lagann, I dislike how Lavos' race was just an anti-spiral ripoff =(

Weird question;

Why is Crono barely used in the play through, and why didn't he receive any new techs?
Was wondering that too. Why not use Crono? The most used character was like... Robo? That's like using that dog in Chrono Cross.
It's just wrong.

Dalton's Castle seems to be your guys' best map. It's fucking awesome although I disagree with the monster placements.

knuck, you probably won't get to this before you make your post, but I'll say it anyways...maybe you should make your comments either 1) in each YouTube vid or 2) in each respective Chapter thread depending on what your comments relate to...*shrugs*
I'll do it in each chapter. Youtube is a troll-heaven, so I'll avoid it.
Nice to see that you guys are interested in criticism. Made me want to post it today but I can't xD. Wait for my posts tomorrow~

We endorse freedom of speech here.
Ok, I wanted to post now but I have to go. Also I'll have to rewatch everything in order to comment. :P
Get ready for a huge post and I hope you guys don't kill me xD. It's just a few things that need to be polished, I swear xD

So I'm wondering, are we allowed to give constructive criticism? It's great and all and I love watching those videos, but there are some things that are just weird and I'd like to comment on them.

I just want to remind everyone that, regardless of Dark Serge's actions, it was SE who made the decision to C&D us. I would hope that nobody forgets that SE are the ones responsible for where we are now.
Actually, it's your own fault, but let's not get into that yet again.
Nice video.

I for one welcome the ongoing enmity. Square Enix will not change its ways until forced by a court, a legislature, or a huge wad of money. That's how progress happens. The villains usually have the law on their side, until suddenly they don't anymore.

The people who defy the big media companies are the ones who will eventually trigger the events which bring about better copyright laws. I recall that it was you who said, earlier in this thread, that the CE team is a bunch of cowards for complying without a fight. Maybe there was some of that. But it was a pretty straightforward strategic decision. Not every single injustice can be a trigger for change. This time, the ingredients simply weren't there. All of us at the Compendium management and everyone on the CE development staff disagree with SE's legal reasoning, but it's definitely a gray area. The development team stood an excellent chance of losing any suit, for lack of money, for lack of solid legal arguments, and for lack of friendly legal precedent on this matter. Their only real mistake was publicizing the game ahead of release. Had it been released, and then followed up with the marketing blitz, there would have certainly been a C&D letter, but probably no lawsuit, because the development team would have complied, but the game itself would have already been out there for the world to pirate as it saw fit.

The development team got a firsthand taste of the story of Icarus. They knew there would be a C&D, but they had not truly grappled with the ramifications of it. In all my time here, I have consistently counseled "serious" fan projects to stay underground. No one seems to take me seriously. Oh well. Maybe this will change things. One thing is for certain: Square Enix has won this round decisively, but, if the thinking of the fan community evolves as a result of this disaster, then the next feature-length fan game will be released under the radar, and thus the long struggle for intellectual property law reform will be that much farther along. I expect the video game industry, and SE in particular, to "get it" much sooner than, say, the music industry--which has been eviscerated by its own trade group--but for that to happen there will have to be compelling fan works out there, accessible to the world, and thus able to demonstrate their value. If you're looking for a show of contrition from the development team, they would certainly tell you that they regret being so visible with the game prior to its release, which undermined their ability not only in releasing a feature-length Chrono game, but to participating (productively) in advancing the relationship between game companies, fans, and fan projects.

Being an ideologue isn't very useful. Strategically, the dev team undermined their own ability to put up a serious challenge to Square Enix by being so loose with the game prior to its release. Once the C&D was sent out, it was already too late to defy it. Any show of resistance would have, very likely, cost JP (and potentially ZeaLitY) a lot of money--possibly in court judgments, but certainly in legal expenses defending in court.
Hey, other than my second or third post in this topic, this is the best post in here! =D

A good solution would be to make copyright last a lot less, say, 3 years at most. That would fix a lot of things.
It's easy to fix copyright. However, solutions that coexist with copyright simply won't work, because people are greedy and will always go for copyright. You either have to kill it or change it.

Copyright, in the way it's used today in amerikkka, is wrong. If you disagree you should fuck off and die.
However, for those who aren't 30 year old closed minded faggots who think copyright is "the way things are supposed to be", here is a nice video about it:

Dunno why people are still talking about this. You people know what needs to be done. Begging for some lawyers to allow you to use SE's IP won't do shit.
Until the day comes when a fangame says "fuck you" to C&Ds, this will keep happening. When/if that day comes, SE will realize that it's more profitable to work with the fans (Valve anyone?) than simply sending C&D letters.
We need fans with balls. Fans who don't care about being recognized and are willing to never be credited for a fangame, just because they believe in the dream of making the fangame become a reality. If you're not willing to do that, you shouldn't be called a real fan. :P
