Hey, all! I've seen plenty of you getting excited for the hack over on r/chronotrigger on Reddit and on these forums, and I just wanna say thanks for the support! I just wanted to give a quick status update and mention some things about how the hack will be downloaded.

First of all, the hack will be downloaded in a traditional .zip file, which will be available here until I get it up on (which I will announcer BTW). The .zip file contains the two patches (regular and Jr.) and a readme. The readme contains general notes on what's improved, but also a small "Q&A" section, where I'll answer some questions that I know I'll get. Here are the questions now:

Q: Can I play/livestream the hack?
A: Sure! Just make sure to credit me for making the hack.

Q: Can I make a repro cart of the hack?
A: Sure, just do NOT sell it. I don't want people profiting off fan works, more specifically my own work.

Q: What are the main differences between this hack and regular CT?
A: Not too much, mainly just some new content, cut content coming back and increased difficulty if you play the regular version of this hack.

Q: Any future projects to look forward to?
A: Not yet. I have plans for more ROM hacks for many different games (including some more CT hacks), so make sure to check those out! I'll announce new CT hacks on the Chrono Compendium forums first.

Q: Should my Chrono Trigger ROM be headered or headerless?
A: I made this hack on a headerless ROM, so that's probably what you should use. There are ways to remove a header from a ROM, so find out for yourself.

Q: Where can I find a Chrono Trigger ROM?
A: I will not point you to directly where you can find a Chrono Trigger ROM, as it's technically piracy, which I don't condone. It would be best to backup your own ROM.

Before I go with this rather quick update (I just love doing them!), I'd love to give a huge thanks to Geiger for creating Temporal Flux (the program used to edit almost all of the hack), Mauron who created various plug-ins for Temporal Flux which were used in this project, Boo the Gentlemen Caller for beta-testing this hack for me (hope you're enjoying it, dude!), and also all the people from the Chrono Compendium and beyond who are hyped for this hack! March 7th's only a fortnight away, folks, so get ready for another spin on this classic RPG then!

Hey, all! Consider this the start of a little series of posts where I discuss potential what-if scenarios in the Chrono universe, basically saying "Hey, what if this happened instead of that?" Today's topic is probably one of the Chrono franchise's most important scenes, the collapse of the Ocean Palace and the disappearance of Schala. But what if she survived and escaped? Let's begin!

We start at the usual scene, right after Crono's death, when Schala is preparing to send the 2 party members (in this case, they'll be Marle and Glenn) and Magus up to the surface. Before she does so, Marle quickly points out that her pendant should have enough power to let them all escape. She immediately gives it to Schala, who has to prepare her spell quickly as the palace is literally only a few seconds before it's fully submerged. All 4 escape, leaving the Ocean Palace to crumble...

Everything is normal up until the 2 party members now wake up, now accompanied by Schala. After their talk with the elder of Algetty, Schala expresses her guilt for letting Crono die, but Glenn assures her that it was her mother's fault. At this point, Schala joins the party! In battle, she would basically be a better Marle but have terrible physical strength, as she only fights with a knife, just like Kid in Chrono Cross. To make it up for it, her healing powers are the best in the game.

Schala's optional for the Blackbird, but if you bring her along, there's a little bit of extra dialogue Dalton has. After the Blackbird falls, the trio of party members (Marle, Glenn and Schala) all head to the North Cape to confront Magus. Although Schala doesn't recognize him at first, after Magus tells of his story, she immediately knows he's Janus. Schala quickly rushes to Magus's side, distraught that her little brother went through all that he described. Magus tells the two party members to go, as he wants to speak to Schala privately. This now starts a completely new scene between the two.

"I can't believe..." Magus mumbles before Schala cuts him off. "I can't believe you suffered the way you did, Janus. You suffered for a lifetime, just to see me again." Schala says in her calm voice all too familiar to Magus. "Well, we're back together now. And those fools think I'll help them? Pathetic." Magus scoffs. "Please, Janus, they helped you bring back the one you love, why not help them do the same thing?" Schala pleads. "Hmph. Very well, Schala. I'll do this for you, and for you alone." Magus says before the two head back to the party members.

Everything is mostly the same from here, although since Schala is now a party member, she appears in several key moments and Magus also warms up to the party a bit more. In this version of the story, Crono, Magus and Schala head to the Black Omen. Once they encounter Queen Zeal on the top of the Black Omen for the final battle, there's some more unique dialogue: "Schala, why are fighting alongside them? Join me, and we shall reign over the world forever!" Zeal demands. "Don't you ever hurt her again, you pitiful woman. Your reign ends here!" Magus shouts, in pure frustration with her single-mindedness.  "Why do you care about her so much, Prophet? Unless you're who I think you are?" Zeal questions, but quickly gets back on-topic. "I'll crush you foolish children, and teach you to never interfere again!" Zeal laughs before transforming.

After the battle with Lavos, all is well until the ending scene, in which Schala also shows up at the Guardia Castle to congratulate Crono. Once everyone gets ready to leave, Schala goes alongside Magus, who actually has some parting words. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but thank you all. You made my dream come true, and we stopped Lavos together. If trouble shows up, you know where to find us. If we ever meet again, call me Janus from now on." Magus says before he and Schala depart. The credits are the same, except now that Magus and Schala are standing on the North Cape as the Epoch flies by...

So yeah, that was it! Tell me if you guys enjoyed it, and potentially any other Chrono what-ifs that I could do!

Kajar Laboratories / Chrono Trigger - Master Quest: Update #3
« on: January 31, 2020, 09:07:46 pm »
Hey, all! I'm here with some bonus news about CT - Master Quest! Shall we get started?

Well, to start it off, development of the extra content included in this hack is basically 100% complete! The only things that need to be added are the enemy stat changes in the regular version of the hack and also to properly link up the Erpon Village exits with their places on the world map. I won't be doing Compendium-wide beta-testing, as I don't want the hack leaking out too early! (By the way, expect the March 7th release date, everyone. Who knows? It might come out earlier than expected!)

Kajar Laboratories / Chrono Trigger - Master Quest: Update #2

Hey, all! I just wanted to drop a quick update about this hack before the new year. Let's begin, shall we?

I've already made a post about it over on r/chronotrigger on Reddit, just so I can get the word out. The hack is almost complete, I just need to finish the Erpon Village maps and harder stat changes for the hack. I haven't had the chance to develop recently, as I've been playing a lot of Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled on my Switch recently. (I promise I'll get to work soon!  8) )

I expect a trailer to release around a few weeks before release. And speaking of release...

Expect a March 7th 2020 release, everyone! I should finish it around the middle on January, and then I'll start beta-testing. However, I won't do beta-testing with multiple people, as I don't want anything to leak out.

Kajar Laboratories / Chrono Trigger - Master Quest: Update #1
« on: November 30, 2019, 03:48:19 pm »
Hey all, I'm back with a little more info on CT - Master Quest! I'll be able to actually show some stuff this time around, so let's begin!

I mentioned that "Battle 2" and "Singing Mountain" are now used in-game. Well, where are they played? Battle 2 is used in the Zenan Bridge encounter with Ozzie, as a battle theme for the Mystical Knights (Ozzie, Slash and Flea), the Lavos Spawns and the bosses on the Black Omen with the exception of Queen Zeal and the Mammon Machine. Singing Mountain is used on the Denadoro Mountains, Mt. Woe and Death Peak.

The Ocean Palace escape scene is extended, and it shows Schala interact with the Frozen Flame, as well as Sealed Door playing instead of Manoria Cathedral. The main ending has a few more friends from around time to interact with, like Gaspar and Spekkio. Magus also says a few things in the main ending, as well as Glenn being human even if the former is alive. A few others are slightly changed, but those are surprises!

The Lost Village that was seen in the CT prerelease is included, and is now known as the Erpon Village, a village of friendly Reptites. There's even a shop that has some unused items such as the SeraphSong!

I mentioned palette changes in the announcement post, remember? Well, here's a full list of what's changed:
Magus (Has red cape instead of blue, like he does in promotional artwork, an unintended side-effect is that the Prophet's cloak is also red, as it shares the same palette as Magus)
Heckran (Has black skin and white nails, like he does on the boxart)
Dalton (Has blue uniform, like he does in artwork)
Ozzie (His chest place things are altered)
Flea (His skin color is the same as in artwork and the rest of the cast)

A few inconsistencies and censored text is fixed, like a character in Zeal saying Janus was Schala's step-brother. This is still the Woolsey translation mostly, so no major changes in text.

So, that's wraps it up for now. Without further ado, here's a few screenshots of some changes:

Kajar Laboratories / Chrono Trigger - Master Quest: Introduction
« on: November 19, 2019, 05:52:26 pm »
Hey all, it's me again!

After deciding to cancel my previous hacking project, CT: The Radical Dream, I've went back to the drawing board for CT hacks and have something familiar yet new, on the way...

Today, I'll be showing off my newest hack that'll almost definitely get released:
Chrono Trigger - Master Quest!

Aside from making each enemy in the game slightly stronger for a more tough experience, there'll be a ton of nu changes that tie in the game with Chrono Cross a little more, as well as some surprises along the way!

A few of these surprises include:

The unused "Battle 2" and "Singing Mountain" songs are used in-game now! Where are they used? Play the hack once it's out to see!

Some cutscenes are expanded to tie in more with Chrono Cross or for other things, such as the Ocean Palace escape scene and the main ending.

Speaking of the main ending, Glenn will be always be in his human form, even if Magus is alive! (Let's just say he reverted the spell, okay?)

Some locations like the Lost Village from the CT Prerelease are included in this hack and re-imagined (No Singing Mountain or Zeal Dungeon unfortunately, unless someone knows how to make those maps playable and wouldn't mind helping me out with that).

Some color palettes (mainly Magus's blue cape and Heckran's blue color) will be altered to match their artwork counterparts a little more.

If you don't want to play a harder version of CT but still like these changes, a separate patch will be included named "Master Quest Jr." that keeps the bonus features but keeps the enemy stats the same as in vanilla CT.

That's all for now, folks! Hopefully the hack should be out near the start of 2020, or March 2020 at the latest.

P.S. I am working on another hack during this time, but that's a surprise for later...

Kajar Laboratories / Chrono Trigger - The Radical Dream: Final Update
« on: October 27, 2019, 06:32:48 pm »
Hey all you Chrono fans out there! As you may or may not know, I was developing the ROM hack CT - The Radical Dream. Unfortunately, I have decided to pull the plug on the project.

The reasoning for this is because the project's scope has grown wider than I'd imagine it would be, and I don't really want to spend too much time on it. I am sorry if I dissapointed anyone who was anticipating this hack, but I do have some things to share in another post that I had planned for CT - The Radical Dream.

I do plan to make more CT hacks in the future, but they'll probably be on a much smaller scale. That being said, expect some news on this next hack very soon...

Maybe.

Kajar Laboratories / Chrono Trigger - The Radical Dream: Update #1
« on: October 16, 2019, 07:49:38 am »
Hey all!

If you have read my last post, I am working on the ROM hack Chrono Trigger - The Radical Dream, a new story taking place in the Radical Dreamers timeline that shows how Magus became the mysterious mage Magil.

Well, I'm happy to report everything's going smoothly and that I'd like to talk about some new things original to this hack:

The first is a brand new character named Cid (yes, his name is a FF reference), who is leading an expedition in 12000BC to study the remnants of Zeal that have been popping up around the world during this time. He'll mainly be prominent during the beginning part of the game that takes place in 12000BC. After that, he will mainly stay in the Last Village commons due to events that happen later on. For his sprite, the unused version of Melchior in a grey robe is used.

The second thing isn't a character, but a minigame: a Chrono-series quiz show! There are 3 tiers of difficulty with 5 questions each, and each tier has 3 random rewards you can earn. The prizes get better the harder the difficulty, so put your brain to the test! (Oh, and don't cheat, please?)

The third thing is about the demo. Now, I don't have a release planned but it will only stop once you have Frog/Glenn in your party, so it may be a little short.

I'm almost done now, but I would like to thank Mauron for what help she's given me with learning a little more about hacking CT. If you stumble onto this post Mauron, thanks!

Well, that's all for now. How about some more screenshots, maybe?

By the way, feel free to ask questions about the hack!

So yeah...

If you've read the title, I am indeed working on a brand new ROM hack of Chrono Trigger. It will be based around Magus and Glenn/Frog as they attempt to uncover the unsolved mysteries of the past and save Schala once and for all...

The game will take place in the timeline of Radical Dreamers, where Magus becomes the mysterious shadow-sneaker known as Magil. The events of this hack will cover what happened during this time.

As for a release date, I do not know. I have only just started making this hack, but I can show some screenshots of what's to come. Remember I have a life too, and I'm doing this project alone. I am attempting to keep the project under wraps so a C&D doesn't happen like with Crimson Echoes.

Now, here come the screenshots!

Chrono Trigger Modification / Help with overworld tiles?
« on: October 13, 2019, 07:30:49 am »
I am attempting to create new areas on the overworlds, but I cannot seem to figure out how to make exits so they can enter the new areas and solid tiles so players can't walk straight through the new areas on the overworld.

I am sorry if this sounds confusing and doesn't make any sense, I've tried to explain it to the best extent that I can.

Is there a way to change the character you first take control as in CT? For example, you could start the game with Robo instead of Crono.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
