Chrono Trigger Modification / Not Learning a Triple Tech
« on: March 06, 2023, 05:50:10 pm »
Hi, everybody. Long time no see. I'm working on a cleanup release of the Schala Edition patch that fixes some bugs reported over time.

This one actually wasn't reported, but I noticed that Chrono-Frog-Ayla never learn their Triple Tech. I've double and triple checked Hi-Tech in Temporal Flux to make sure I have the Performance Group and Tech Requirements set properly, and I do. I also looked at that spot in a hex editor to make sure that what Hi-Tech displayed was accurate, and it was.

Any ideas? This is only happening to this one Triple Tech.

Site Updates / Schala Edition v2.1 patch
« on: January 14, 2021, 02:01:58 pm »
Hi, everybody! Version 2.1 of the Schala Edition hack is now available!

Patch and readme:
http://www.bwass.org/bucket/011421schalahack.zip

I've also submitted an update to the project's page on Romhacking.

2.1 is a mild cleanup of 2.0, correcting typos and addressing many bugs reported by users. The primary game content remains unchanged from 2.0.

First-timers, be sure to use the "Chrono_Trigger_(U)_[!].smc" version of the base ROM.

I'd just like to thank the community here again for its support while I worked on the project throughout 2019. It wouldn't have happened without the Compendium.

Cheers!

Chrono Trigger Modification / Text extraction
« on: December 16, 2020, 02:51:39 pm »
Hi. I'm the guy who made the Schala Edition hack a while ago.  I'd like to make some updates to the hack, but one big frustration are... simple typos! I found way too many and would want a future release to have zero.

Is there a utility that will allow me to rip all text content from a modified CT ROM? Even if it can't reinsert the text--I could spellcheck the exported text and then manually fix any mistakes in Temporal Flux. I've used this strategy for other projects and it worked well.

Thank you!

Chrono Trigger Modification / Call for playtesters!
« on: November 14, 2018, 11:13:03 pm »
Finally time for playtesting of my "Schala Edition" hack!

The headline, for anyone who doesn't know, is this hack changes events so Schala is rescued from the Ocean Palace. But there's a lot more to it than that.

Right now I've got three signed up (chrono.source, DK_Donutlicious, Pictou). If you want to join, please reply to this message by Friday night.

I don't want any more than 10 testers, and it's just first-come, first-served.

What I ask is that you play through one new game and preferably a New Game+ as well. And just... explore. Talk to everybody. Read signs. Try all the Techs. Go everywhere you can go. Steal from enemies. Do any side-events you know of. And basically try to break what I've made.

Specifically, I'm looking for any bugs or typos. I'll start a thread for reports this weekend, after I send the patch to the playtest group.

What I'm not looking for is a co-author. The decisions on what to do with this project are already made, so if you've got a great idea for something, go make a hack! The more the merrier!

Thanks!

Chrono Trigger Modification / 1000 AD map during bad ending
« on: November 02, 2018, 10:48:28 pm »
The designers had the 1000 AD map load during the apocalypse sequence because the 1999 AD map was incomplete.

Well, my hack has a complete 1999 AD map. Does anyone know how to make that sequence load 1999 AD instead of 1000 AD?

This is literally the last thing I have to do. Everything else is finally done, after like 8 months.

So, after many adventures, I'm about ready to release my Schala hack to a small group for play-testing.

But during my current playthrough, something weird happened. Crono learned Wind Slash, but then also immediately learned *Lightning.

This did not happen when Marle learned Provoke, Lucca learned Hypno Wave, or Frog learned Slurp Cut.

Any idea what might have broken?

Chrono Trigger Modification / Map weirdness
« on: June 16, 2018, 01:39:52 am »
Every time I think I've completed this damn hack, I find a bug on my next test playthrough.

So, what causes this now?

As you can see, the tiles that are a solid near-black color are appearing in the wrong shade, creating a visible separation in the floor that looks weird.

This also happens sometimes with the Blackbird air duct map.

Anyone know how to fix it?

I've had to start over with a fresh ROM so many times with this project. Never had to do that before. I really don't want to do it again.

Chrono Trigger Modification / Just stopping in to say, I'm not dead.
« on: June 08, 2018, 10:15:41 pm »
I had some messages asking me if I was okay, which was unexpected and really nice!

I've just been busy the past three weeks or so with family and job stuff. The Schala hack is still on track to be released soon.  I'll have more updates for you all shortly.

Chrono Trigger Modification / Sprite Palettes
« on: April 26, 2018, 05:35:59 pm »
You know that scene where, if you haven't rescued Crono, all the party members and Gaspar come flying out of the Gate near the Telepod?  This is part of scene 57, which includes many variations on the ending.

I changed the scene so that Schala comes out of the Gate instead of human Glenn, and then Glenn shows up separately for the bit about how hot Lucca thinks he is.

So, when Schala is present, there are these sprites on screen:

  • Marle
  • Lucca
  • Robo
  • Ayla
  • Magus
  • Gaspar
  • Schala

Last night, everyone's palette was displaying properly.

Today, I worked on tons of little touches in event 57, things like making sure everybody's looking the right direction at the right times, etc.

But now, when I play the scene, Schala uses Magus's palette.  Everyone else looks normal.  I tried to look back over my changes and couldn't remember what all I did today and what I did over the past few days...

Anybody have an idea of what I might've done to cause this?  Something to look for? Or how I could fix it?

Chrono Trigger Modification / Can you add a 9th overworld?

Without major surgery and relocation of the other 8, I mean.

Just wondering.

Chrono Trigger Modification / Sprite Insertion
« on: March 06, 2018, 09:41:43 pm »
This is what I've been dreading.

I've tried reading the old discussions here, as well as Geiger's documents, but I'm not putting this together right in my head.

I want to add three special poses for Schala. Is there "room" to add three poses to Schala's existing sprite, or do I need to make these three poses separate sprites, and then switch between the sprites as needed?

What offsets are available for inserting additional sprite graphics? Once inserted into the ROM, can I manipulate them in Temporal Flux in the normal way?

Does Chrono Trigger compress its sprites? If so, what's the best way to access them?

Thanks.

Chrono Trigger Modification / Slash & Flea question
« on: February 20, 2018, 07:29:04 pm »
This is probably my last question!

So, I want to make a very simple scene where Slash and Flea are both on screen.  However... any time I put these two together on the screen, I get a pink screen of death upon loading the map.

The game will let me have two Slashes, two Fleas, or just about any other combination of PCs, NPCS or enemies. But it won't let me have these two on screen together.  Pink screen very time.

Tried all the different versions of these enemies. Tried creating NPC versions of them. Tried every combination there is. Nada.

Any ideas?

Chrono Trigger Modification / Lavos boss rush
« on: February 18, 2018, 10:29:16 pm »
I'd like to skip the entire Lavos boss rush, where you fight versions of earlier bosses.

For example: when you beat Queen Zeal at the Black Omen, and go through the screen transition, you would immediately launch into the battle with the Lavos shell. The whole boss rush would be skipped. Once beating the shell and having the hole appear, events would proceed normally.

I looked at the event script for the Lavos location and wow, it is an absolute maze of flags and goto's. I can't keep track of it.

Is there a quick and easy way to make the desired change without major surgery on this event code?

Thanks.

Chrono Trigger Modification / Multiple battles on one map
« on: January 24, 2018, 09:33:26 pm »
So, is there something that needs to be set or cleared between battles?

I've created a new area and put multiple battles in it which you can fight in any order.

Whichever battle I do first runs perfectly, but any subsequent battles crash after the party members move into place. (Specifically, all enemies disappear and then the game locks up.)

I've checked to make sure that I didn't reuse any enemy slots and am not calling the wrong functions.

Any ideas what to look at next?  I've been staring at this for hours and can't look at it anymore!

Chrono Trigger Modification / Disable Epoch time gauge?
« on: January 20, 2018, 12:32:39 am »
Just wondering if, once you have the flying Epoch, is it possible to disable the time gauge? So you'd have a flying car to tool around 12,000 BC in, but you wouldn't be able to time travel until you do some event that makes the time gauge available again.

Thanks.
