So, originally I was going to put this in a much larger AU-based plot (The original game, except what if Yakra was secretly behind everything? Cooler than it sounds), but I'm really not up to that kind of chore, and this has just been such a strong concept in my head that I decided to make something out of it.

The story is an AU version of the events which follow Magus joining the team. Right away, there are some obvious changes to the game's plot, changes which vastly serve to set the framework for exploring the mind of a man who refuses to accept the team as friends, not because he doesn't like them, but because he can't accept that he deserves them. Everyone deserves a friend though, and in this story Magus learns this with a little help from an existing friend.

===================The Friendlord================

Ch 1 - The Survivors

The scene was iconic enough - Marle and Frog, stood upon the North Cape, facing off against Magus. Marle and Frog had come to this era with Crono in tow, but now he was gone, and the only other person they had left from outside was Magus...    ...except not really, as they had just learned.

"So..." Frog muttered lowly, as if overcome with a sympathetic sadness, before regaining his composure and reminding himself of who he was speaking to.

"Thou art...     ...thou art that filthy urchin!!"

Magus made no gesture or reaction whatsoever to Frog's insults, merely continuing his story.

"Ever since Lavos's time portal landed me in the Middle Ages, I have waited to even the score...  Had you not interrupted me at my castle, I... !!!"

Magus caught himself - what if they hadn't interrupted him? Recent events implied he would have fared poorly.

"...anyways, drawn into another portal, I ended up here - ironic, seeing as how this is where I was torn from. With my knowledge of the future, I convinced the Queen that I was a mighty oracle...  ...but no history book could have prepared me for what happened here last night."

As he continued, a small hush of hopelessness fell over Marle and Frog both, as it seemed even their most desperate avenue - an unlikely alliance- had given up hope.

"Great is the power of Lavos," Magus spoke, as if comprehending it for the first time. "All who challenge...   'it'...   will surely perish."

At those last words, Magus's ten-yard stare curled into a slight smile of satisfaction.

"Now... heed these words, and leave my time period. Unless of course, you wish to end up like your idiot friend, Crono!"

"Now wait JUST A MINUTE!" Marle shouted. "Crono saved your life! The least you could do is..."

"NONE OF YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE", Magus snarled back. "Don't you get it? You keep meddling in affairs which are none of your concern. Perhaps I was ill-prepared for battle with Lavos but I have spent decades of my life studying everything about it! Where it unearths, what its weaknesses are..."

Marle glared, knowing that Magus would shout over any protest she gave him.

"...only for a Frog and a stupid group of CHILDREN to swarm in and lay claim to my mission? And how long have you even known this thing has existed? Do you profess to know what you're doing any more than I?"

Frog wanted to draw his sword.

Magus just scoffed and turned away.

"If you hadn't been here... Schala could have escaped, too...   but I guess you already planned ahead for that, right? Knowing so much more than I?"

         "..."

Magus turned back around and looked them both in the eyes.

         "Crono got what he deserved."

Frog immediately unsheathed his sword and pointed it right at the wizard. "Thou hadst best rephrase thine words, Fiendlord."

"Very well," Magus declared. "How can I put this, so that you understand? 'Play with fire, and you get burned."

"So be it!!" Frog shouted. "Raise arms, Magus!"

"Yes..." Magus smiled, tearing off his armor, and tossing away his scythe. "Attack me if you will...  Did I ever tell you what Ozzie did with Cyrus's bones before tossing the whole heap off the mountain? This is your big chance! I am unarmed... my defenses are down... and my magic is drained. You'd best hurry."

Frog stared into Magus's eyes... there was supposed to be a blood-curdling fury in them, only giving way to fear once he'd realized Frog was not to be crossed... except now, all the knight could think about was that Magus was expecting the same thing out of Lavos... for far longer, and over far worse. This...    wasn't right.

          "No," Frog refused.

Magus's manic grin disappeared. "What do you mean, no?"

"No," Frog repeated, sheathing his blade. "Killing thee won't bring Cyrus back.... or Crono. I art concerned that thou will not terrorize or threaten mine kingdom ever again, and I canst now confirm that quest is over. Lo, to stay here, in this frozen wasteland, is punishment enough. Come Marle... let's return to the End of Time...  we've much to tell the others."

A rage brewed in Magus, that Frog would not end his misery... but there was nothing he could do with it except stand there, looking out at the sea in meditation.

"And then what..." he thought to himself as the waves crashed in. "Are you still going to challenge Lavos? What good could you possibly do without me? Would you even consider it? Even if I told you there was a way that Crono..."

Magus's meditation was interrupted by the sound of someone crying, getting closer and closer. Whoever it was at least wasn't approaching out of curiosity, but he disliked having his solitude threatened all the same. When he bothered to look up and peer south along the cliff's eastern edge, he was met with a rather shocking image...

...a sobbing girl in a tattered purple dress and voluminous blue hair.

"Schala..." Magus whispered to himself, in surprise. In truth, he knew that Marle and her friends were not to blame for his sister's presumed fate, but he wanted them to feel like they were the ones to blame for everything. If his sister really had wanted to escape, the resources to do so would have been within mere feet of her - assuming of course her pendant was truly so low on power. Otherwise she simply would have teleported herself out as well, and now it appeared as if that was exactly what had happened.

"So..." he said to himself, with some keen interest in the other party, which had paid him no mind as it sobbed and looked longingly out at the ocean through a blur of tears. "It seems your sense of self-preservation was stronger than you had anticipated..."

Magus then immediately watched as Schala raised her arms, closed her eyes, and toppled forward, directly into the sea.

"...perhaps not" Magus said, more in disappointment than in grief, as he adjusted his gloves and began levitating over the spot. "I'm sorry, Schala, but I cannot allow you to kill yourself, today."

Not far away, Marle and Frog heard a loud commotion of water and wind coming from the North Cape. Curious what Magus was up to, they elected to head back and see...

===================================

So, yeah, a little different than the norm. I've got some stuff to explore with Magus and this is how it all starts.

So, I normally just kinda try to ignore this, but lately all I ever see out of the discord is political arguments, namecalling, and a generally sour atmosphere that scares new users off.

Making matters worse, some users have taken it upon themselves to approach every single new join and warn them away from the server for it, claiming that anyone who leaves right away "isn't worth having around anyways".

Supposedly, the admin for the server simply up and disappeared? This is a bad light on the compendium community - is there *anything* that can be done about it? I'll gladly help moderate.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Racing Johnny without Crono
« on: February 15, 2021, 10:26:24 am »
This just popped into mind, but as far as I know, the Jet Bike only has Crono sprited into it, and I've never really raced Johnny all that much.

Will Johnny accept a race from you if Crono is not present? What if you're between Zeal and Death Peak? Does Crono's sprite still appear in it?

News Submissions / Dragon Quest XI! Featuring... Schala!?
« on: March 11, 2020, 11:55:07 pm »
Ok, so AcaciaSgt pointed this out to me on the Discord, and I have to say, I am highly amused, but I also have some serious questions.

Mia is a character from Dragon Quest XI, with strong personal connections to one of the player characters. I could go on about how she is coincidentally some sort of tragic sister character yada yada yada its not important and nobody needs the spoilers.

What does matter is her very curious appearance.

Everyone has questions about Chrono Cross, its ending, and its definition of "Daughter-Clone", and it looks a bit as if even Akira Toriyama is asking questions :P It's not just the hair color, but the fact that she even has the face of one combined with the hairstyle/outfit of the other.

Coincidence or not, I laughed for a good half-an-hour today due to this. Thanks AcaciaSgt :P

I have been mulling over the events and dialogue between Magus, Schala, and the party in the Dream's Epilogue ending. Particularly, I'm thinking about something Schala said to the party before sending them all away.

Quote
dwell not on this.

Originally, I was under the impression that she had wiped their memory, since many sources erroneously claim she did this to future!Magus (Rather, he did this to himself.) On seeing it again, I am highly doubtful she wipes anyone's memories here, merely asking them not to dwell upon it.

Honestly, this seems to gel better with Lucca in particular, but more to the point: What happens if party!Magus is there to witness the failure of his future self? Does he adjust accordingly? Has his life's mission changed from searching for Schala to freeing her?

I find this very curious, as it may imply that Guile has something of a Schrodinger's memory: unless something canon is stated or shown in the future, Guile both is and is not amnesiac! (how fitting for someone named after a cat in the Japanese version)

"that Janus of Zeal grew up to become... this?"

Just something I did based on a scene in the new hack, Chrono Trigger: Schala edition

8
First of all, let me preface by saying I should put "new" in quotation marks here. I've been around since before 2008, and in that time never heard anyone put this theory forward, so I'm guessing I'm the first. Anyhoo...

Schala could have easily escaped the Ocean Palace, she just chose [not to.

After certain events, she tells the party that she only has enough power left in her pendant to teleport the three of them to safety, but not herself.

That...  ...is kind of BS. :/  Ok but hear me out here:

The party is able to use the Mammon Machine to power up their version of the pendant, and when Schala saves the party, they are literally sitting right in front of it.

Given materials in both CTDS's new ending and both sequels, it can be reasonably presumed that Schala had no intention of leaving the Ocean Palace, especially not if her salvation came from the accursed Mammon Machine.

Quote from: Radical Dreamers, paraphrased
Hating what she'd done, refusing what she said or heard, to simply continue living was her curse.

tldr; Theoretically, Schala could have escaped and even avoided ending up in the DBT by way of recharging her pendant. She just didn't want to, for the pain was too great.

Fan Fiction / ((FINISHED)) Rise of the Fiendlord
« on: October 29, 2018, 08:13:01 pm »
This is a bit of WIP that hopefully I'll be able to maintain the time and inclination to work on. It's a scenario that has been brewing in my head for some time, and I want to try to give it manifestation.

Basic summary is that, as the name implies, this tells the tale of Janus as he grew to become an adult in the middle ages. It begins shortly after his arrival in the time period, and ends just before the events of 600 AD in the game. Along the way, it also seeks to explain certain things, or set up how certain events came to be. There are some rather surprising twists and a select few OCs as needed, but everything sets up the events in the game, nonetheless. There is also a little bit of fourth-dimensional thinking involved, as far as "original timelines" goes.

other than that...        I hope you enjoy it.

         Rise of the Fiendlord

    Prologue:

    Keeper's Dome, 2299 Kingdom Calendar

A lone figure in a tattered gray suitcoat and gray skirt stood on a mezzanine, looking out at the world. It was always a cloudy and dirty world, with little vegetation left and almost as much human life. Buildings would lay toppled or half-buried in the ground, ash flying everywhere you looked. The sunshine however could still be felt through the cracked glass and it warmed this woman's soul a bit.

"You know...." said a voice from behind, "The Ozone layer is weak here. You might not want to stay there too long."

"Will I wither and die?" she asked, not moving or even turning to face him. "Will my fading husk finally shrivel up and kill me itself? I care not. I have destroyed the world, Belthesar. Look out upon it and see. I have no right to leave this time or look away from it, and she has no will to leave my side. There is only punishment for me, now."

Belthasar shook his head. "Your Majesty...     ...I won't pretend that you don't bear your sins upon your back...    but the power of Lavos....    the promise of the Mammon Machine... you can't deny that in some way, you succumbed to the same illnesses that have plagued mankind since they first came upon the Frozen Flame: greed, envy...    madness...     Schala does not condemn you for it...    ...why do you condemn yourself?"

Zeal shook her head. "Schala does not condemn me because she thinks herself just as responsible. If she had said 'no', or used force to oppose me..."

Belthasar put a hand on Zeal's shoulder. "she doesn't condemn you for it because she loves you. She didn't stop you because to her, deep down, you were always her mother."

    "..."

Belthasar removed his hand. Touching her like that was *certainly* was not something he would ever have dared to do back in the Kingdom of Zeal, but he felt that after everything that happened...  now that they were living together in this... observatory of time... well...      ...maybe they were friends too now. ...or not.

"Actually...   these domes were built in happier times. Have you not seen the video record of the 'Day of Lavos'?"

Zeal remained facing the window, without a word.

"The destruction you see about you came about in 1999, Kingdom Calendar. That's... umm... let's see...      13,999 years after what you did. In that time, the world not only healed, but grew warm and habitable. Not a dreaming paradise perhaps, but a world with grass and trees all its own."

"Is that so?" she asked. "And in all that time, nobody else brought about the end? Just me?"

"Mother, stop", Schala called out. "It was a dark time for you, then. You can't blame yourself like that."

"Hmmm..." Belthasar replied. "Actually, there was one other incident in 600 Kingdom Calendar. That's..."

"65,012,600th year of Lavos", Zeal replied. "I'm well aware of the new system."

"Erm... yes, well...    during this time period, Lavos was briefly awoken by a powerful sorcerer named Magus, who hoped to weaponize it and destroy humanity, paving the way for his own kind, the fiends."

"Fool", Zeal snorted. "So he destroyed the world as well?"

"No. He had succeeded in making some sort of contact with it, but then his castle was destroyed and he was never seen again, inadvertently saving humanity in the process. Still, he is regarded as bringing knowledge of Lavos back into the history books, as well as...      ...oh... yes... you might both find this interesting, but...         ...the black wind as well."

Zeal looked surprised for once. "That's impossible! That curse only affects royal family."

An alarming thought crossed Schala's mind. "Belthasar, is it... do you think it is possible that he..."

"Hmm?" Belthasar replied. "Oh, no my dear...  no, not likely. Magus was a fiend, not a human. Besides...

...I don't think Janus had any actual powers..."

News Submissions / [Hip Hop] so, this flew under the radar it seems...

Before today, I had no idea who Whiz Khalifa was. I am not a fan of the Hip Hop genre personally, but this is just too damn confusing/hilarious/why for me *not* to post.

back in 2010, he released an album called Kush and Orange Juice. One of the tracks on that album is called Never been, and...    well...

it samples something awfully familiar.

So, folks on the discord server might have heard me mention these once or twice, but a very talented vocalist on youtube named Laura Shigihara (Supershigi) has lent her voice to a few very famous songs in the game: Corridors of Time, and Schala's theme.

So I had an interesting thought regarding the Day of Lavos in 1999, the post-apocalypse in 2300 AD, and the fate of the planet itself afterward.

In Arris Dome, the party recovers some seeds from the basement and presents them to the people above, telling them that the seeds "could be their last hope" if the enertron fails. For the first time in possibly over a hundred years, Doan and the others become a little more optimistic, and "The Day The World Revived" begins to play.

..."the day the world revived..."    That's what I'm curious about. What if it really did?

So, obviously there are a few obstacles at play, here. Time, robots, mutants, crap weather, etc. Given the game's themes of dreams, determination, and perspective on life, is it that hard to imagine a *tiny* population of humans surviving and slowly repopulating the Earth?  What if the party found a gate going even further ahead, say 5,000 years? 10,000 years? Would the planet actually be far more habitable?

If you revisit Arris Dome later in the game, Doan will remark that, of all things, the seeds they planted are actually beginning to sprout. So, the soil is not infertile. After awhile, the seed very well could bear fruit, and thus Arris Dome could eventually gain a small garden. A garden of what exactly?? Unknown - if they are a mixed variety of a seeds though, there might be some survival essentials. It wouldn't be easy, but it is possible that not only could Arris Dome eventually become a functioning greenhouse with a healthy staff, but more healthy people could brave the ruins and set up greenhouses at other domes.

As for Lavos? It's mentioned that in the future Lavos is leeching off the earth, slowly killing it. Thing is, it has already begun to produce children which will soon leave the planet. After that, it seems reasonable to assume Lavos will probably simply die off on its own. It might not survive long enough to completely kill the planet, especially when that planet clearly still has fertile soil and is capable of at least growing food.

So, greenhouses start cropping up at domes, people get healthier, heck maybe even some repairs are done over the decades/centuries. Maybe even more unique seeds are discovered/planted? The machines try to stop them, and might set them back a little bit, but Mother Brain I think mentioned that part of the plan hinged on humanity becoming weak. That is starting to not be the case. Scrappy little humanity, the race chosen in prehistory for being tough survivors, manages just that. It wins out against the robots, and ekes out its own survival against the mutants as well. Eventually, the dust clouds over earth will settle, and though Earth *might* not be the same ever again, it at least might become something new. Ultimately, the Day of Lavos is no worse to humanity than the ice age, or the world post-fall of Zeal...

...aside from possibly saving other worlds from suffering the same fate as their own, as well as paving the way for the foundation of Chronopolis, the rest of the game might not have even been necessary.

Fan Fiction / Radical Dreamers - An Epilogue
« on: February 28, 2018, 12:15:43 am »
Radical Dreamers is the only game where Janus officially gets his happy ending, but we never really see exactly how that goes down because Serge, the narrator, isn't there for it. So what would have happened? What would that conversation between Janus and Schala have been like?

That's the idea here.

It's been awhile since I actually logged in here, hasn't it?

I can't recall exactly when, but I know the community has started to go cold. Not too cold, I hope! The Dream of Zeal is alive and all that jazz.

Anyway, I'm doing ok. Still up to my neck in memes, but I've also been doing a lot of cosplay. Just yesterday was my first time as a very special and beloved character to both myself and (I'm sure) this community :)

Hope everyone is doing well, and hope to see you around
