Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / 2 Cross Glitches and An Easter Egg.
« on: January 23, 2007, 01:11:52 am »
I don't know how many people already know about these two glitches, but I guess I'll share what I know anyway. If this isn't in the right section, I apologize.

Anyway, I recently sent a message to Zeality about some things, and I mentioned two glitches I know of for this game. One is, as far as I know, only for the Japanese version of the game. The other works with both, but doesn't seem to have any real use (other than entertainment value).

I'll start with the Japanese version glitch, which causes your in-battle element levels to act in a strange way. Keep in mind, I didn't discover this glitch. I learned about it from http://radical.or.tv/koryaku/renkei.htm, which is a Japanese site with some cool information on it.

The basic idea (if I remember correctly) is to have two characters who can use a double tech in your team, and place someone other than Serge as your party leader (he can be in the second or third slot, if you wish). Build up the appropriate element levels for the two characters that can use the double tech, and build about 5 or so with your new leader character.

Everything seems normal until you unleash the double tech. This causes weird results which depend on some formula I don't understand. Basically, you can have Glenn go up to element level 8 and have your third person lose all their levels (even though they weren't involved) after a single X-Strike. The site I linked to should have an explanation on how/why things work that way, but I apologize if I didn't explain things very well. It's been a while since I've tested the glitch, but I know it works.

The other glitch works for all versions of the game and is more likely to be common knowledge. Simply put, enemies in Chrono Cross cannot die from Poison status. This may be a "duh" fact to some people, but if you InfoScope an enemy who is poisoned and let their HP hit 1, you'll notice it stops draining...even if you defend multiple times. The trick is to use an element (something harmless), which will drain the monster's HP by 7 points instead of 1. This causes the HP stat to rollover and display a totally ridiculous number: 4,294,967,292 or so. Nitrodon (a friend of mine) figured that out, so thanks go to him for that number.

The number is completely for show, since the enemy will still die in a single attack. You also cannot heal the enemy to 0 HP to make a kill, so there's a little fun taken away. Obviously if the enemy was undead, you could, but where's the fun in that? For those who just want to see a picture, here is a screenshot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/DarkKnightSparda/poisonfails.jpg Yes, that is using the Japanese version, but that's where I first discovered this. Yes, Serge's name has also been shortened to one character. If you know me, you know why. ;)

Anyway, I'll share one other thing that people may or may not know about Cross that is quite interesting...even if it isn't a glitch. I learned about this from the same site I linked to with the element level glitch, if you want to see the source. Here's what you need to do:

Start a New Game+, fight the final boss as soon as possible (Poshul is ok too, I think), get poisoned, and run away. Go to the Hydra Marshes and speak with the guy guarding the entrance. He should say you don't look so well and he'll cure your poison, if I remember correctly. Thing is, Serge steps past the man while doing this...allowing you to roam the Hydra Marshes quite early.

But wait, there's a catch: your path is blocked by two enemies. One is a dwarf on the first screen toward the left, who says some amusing things and you can fight him. He'll pass out when you defeat him, blocking your path in the process. The other enemy is a Beeba, who is in the second screen. If my memory isn't too fuzzy, he'll fight you and then say something about you being mean to him. Either way, he blocks your path.

Other than that, you are free to roam around in those spaces as much as you'd like. When you want to leave, just speak to the man guarding the entrance again (I think).

Honestly, after as many playthroughs of Chrono Cross I've had, I didn't know about that area until a few months ago or so.

Anyway, hopefully someone enjoys this list and gets some entertainment/use out of the stuff here.

I know there was a similar question asked not long ago, but I have a few different questions. I should also say that I know what the status effects do, just in case. I'll see if I can make a nice numbered list for my questions:

1. What is a status inflicting element's "hit" percentage when it comes to giving the status?

Say I use FirePillar on Dario with no red on the field and it doesn't cause burns. Now, if I use FirePillar with 1 or 2 red spots on the field, he gets the burn status. Now, I've heard that for each color that matches your element of choice, the power is boosted by 11.11%, so does the same apply to the status infliction rate (whatever it is)?

2. What bosses can be given "burns" and "afraid" status?

It seems like the dragons are immune to burns somehow, though I doubt the Water Dragon is. Technically, I could use Revenge and basically force the status onto whoever I want (not the dragons though), but I'm looking to inflict it by using FirePillar and AeroBlaster (like usual).

3. Do some bosses have a natural resistance (not immunity) to the above status effects?

It seems difficult to give Dario burns unless there is at least one red spot on the field beforehand, so it makes me wonder if he somehow has a resistance to such a thing. Considering the red element method is quite effective against him, you really wouldn't notice any resistance...since you'd be throwing red elements at him constantly.

4. What elements give status effects?

I know these (I'm sure I'm missing one somewhere):

Bushbasher/Poison
FirePillar/Burns
AquaBall/Flu
PhotonBeam/Fatigue
IceBlast/Frozen/Flu
MagmaBurst/Confuse
AeroBlaster/Afraid
ElectroBolt/Dizzy (I guess)
MeteorShower/Fatigue
HellSoul and HellBound/Curse/Darkness

Now, the reason I ask all this is because I'll be doing another speed run on this game sometime in the future, and I want to know how many bosses I can hit with useful status effects. I figure "burns" and "afraid" are the worthwhile ones, since poison is too slow to do much of anything (if it actually does something to bosses).

Any help is appreciated.
