Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Post-Lavos Core silhouettes
« on: August 02, 2015, 05:28:10 pm »
Hey Compendium folks. I just happened upon someone's last chapter of their Chrono Trigger LP in my suggested YouTube videos, and for whatever reason decided to watch it. After the Lavos Core fight, I saw something I don't think I'd ever seen before. The screen flashes through all the eras, fades to white, and then (this is the new part for me:) silhouettes of the party appear facing off against the silhouette of the Left Lavos Bit. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/fvESTN94Cc0?t=24m.
I've beaten this game countless times, and do not remember ever seeing those silhouettes. The LPer on this video skips the Black Omen, so at first I thought maybe that's what triggered them, like they were there to indicate that there's more you need to do to unlock New Game + or something. Then, I watched other LP videos where the player had completed the Black Omen and they showed up anyway (https://youtu.be/HzCmh44xSe8?t=29m31s). One LPer (who seemed very knowledgeable about the game) was a bit surprised by the silhouettes showing up: https://youtu.be/O_4k500z4Xs. And on other LPs, the silhouettes do not show up at all: https://youtu.be/YJcbscptQ0A?t=37m19s. I also popped in my own SNES cart to make sure I'm not losing my mind, and sure enough, I did not get the silhouettes either.
Now some Googling and more LP-watching seems to indicate that these silhouettes never show up on the DS version of the game, leading me to believe that their appearance was unintentional. But why do they appear inconsistently in the SNES version? Is there something you have to do in the game to trigger them? Do just some SNES cartridges have the silhouettes and some not? Is it just some strange byproduct of playing the game on a certain emulator (or maybe the most commonly used ROM was taken from a "glitched" copy of the game)?
Though the silhouettes show up in a lot of LP videos, I can't imagine a ton of people have seen them, because there are a lot of implications that can be drawn from them that I've never seen discussed in my years of lurking and posting on Chrono fan forums (that Lavos survived the final battle, that maybe that Lavos Bit is what first merged with Schala, that the Bit actually "saved' Crono & co. from the time explosion thing that seems to happen at the end of the battle, etc.).
Needless to say, this has really sparked my curiosity. Just when I thought I knew everything I could know about this game, something new showed up on my radar! Does anyone know anything about these mysterious silhouettes?

Characters, Plot, and Themes / About Starky

Nope, we never learned anything more about Starky. Like most characters of CC, he's just fuel for fanfiction.
Actually, Starky is much more important than many characters in CC, considering he is one of the few required characters, as he provides the transportation to Terra Tower.
Anyway, in one of the endings (I believe the one you get after the rebirth, but before Terra Tower rises), Dark Serge, Kid, and Harle all go to the bar in Termina, which is run by Luccia, Karsh, Marcy, Solt, and Peppor. A few star children (who look exactly like Starky) are there as well. They converse about how there are no unique substances on this world and they should begin their invasion soon. But first, they have to wait for their scout, who is traveling with the world's natives, to report back.
Interesting, eh?

Just a quick note; it wasn't me that you quoted there.
Oops! Sorry about that!
*Just went to fix previous post*

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Two questions and an observation about Kid.

Schala has what can be considered a transdimensional existence. Since Kid is an entity who exists in multiple dimensions, she may have inherited a connection to her alter ego in Radical Dreamers from Schala.
Is it possible that it could be the exact opposite? Is there perhaps only "one" Kid?
This could be possible because Kid either does not exist, or is off doing something on the mainland in the Home World. (I've always found that ironic that she never appears there, though, because she is responsible for its creation.) If the case is that she does not exist in the Home World, we can assume that she can only exist in one world at a time.
Let's say Schala used the Astral Amulet/Pendant/whatever to bring Kid to the Radical Dreamers world, for purposes of...
- meeting Serge
- meeting Janus (or perhaps vice versa, so Janus can meet Kid)
- sparking interest in the Frozen Flame
- getting hints towards who she really is [/list:o]
Then, after the adventures are over, Schala brings Kid back to Another World, and Kid forces herself into believing the RD adventure was simply a dream, similar to what Schala did to Serge after the CC adventure. This would give reason towards how Kid seems to know Serge during their "first" encounter at Another Cape Howl.
Unlikely, yes, but possible.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Concerning Schala/Kid, the Ideal Timeline, and Serge
« on: January 11, 2005, 12:21:27 am »
As for the merging of Schala and Kid, I'm still debating with myself. There are definite reasons the two could have or could have not merged. But anyway...
I do believe that by using the Chrono Cross, all of the timelines were merged into one. Whether you believe that all of them or just Home and Another were merged, I think it is important that we realize that Serge was allowed to exist, even though FATE had not planned for him to.
Anyway, I believe that it was in Schala's interest to free herself from Lavos/the Mammon Machine/a Lavos spawn/whatever you believe the other part of the TimeDevourer to be but more importantly to save the world from it. She used the Arbiter, Serge, to do this in either one of two ways:
These statements suggest that in one way or another, Serge's presence in the world disrupted the future the CT Crew had created. Whatever Serge did to cause this is still a mystery to me. Regardless, it is implied that the world can be saved if the original CT timeline is restored.
The previous statement most likely caused a lot of fury among CC players. Discovering that everything in the game except a simple quest for three dragon scales was a dream can be quite a let down.
Interestingly enough, though, this part of the ending occurs only when you use the Chrono Cross to defeat the TimeDevourer. Otherwise, you simply see the credits roll. This implies that the world did not need to be saved (as it already was by Crono and Co.), and that Serge truly would never embark on his epic journey.
It's just a theory - and every theory has its holes - but it makes sense enough to me. That's why I believe that the ideal timeline includes a combination of all the timelines, specifically those of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, not just the two from CC.

- Completely destroy the TimeDevourer from whatever dimension.
- Merge all the timelines into one using the Chrono Cross, therefore merging the Chrono Trigger timeline in which Crono and Co. had already killed Lavos with the Chrono Cross timelines. [/list:o]
My textual evidence follows...
Quote
Illusion of Child Lucca: We... No... Everyone worked to save the planet's future for nothing... It's all because of you! You killed it! You...!!! So many lives were supposed to be saved... This planet was to be healed with love, hope, and dreams...!

Illusion of Child Marle: How could you? How could you do such a thing...!? It's all your fault that the world is going to end up like this! It's all your fault, Serge!!! Murderer!!!

Leena: Don't scare me like that! You just passed out all of a sudden! Hm? What...? Terra Tower...? FATE? What are you talking about? We just got here. You got some Komodo dragon scales for me... Don't you remember? You sound confused... Come on, Serge... Get with the program. Our summer's just started...
