Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: The Elusive Mirrors...

Or replace it with a Gold Stud and replace the Apocalypse Arm with the Crisis Arm, and spam Rapid-Fire Fist instead, since that does more damage per turn on average.

Seriously, I don't know why everyone's all "Dragon Tear + Apocalypse Arm = instant win!" It doesn't. Even with the Dragon Tear, Robo only crits 30% of the time -- three times out of ten. With the Crisis + R-F Fist combo, you can deal ~6000 damage constantly unless you need to heal Robo back to a point where he has xx9 HP. On average, you'll find yourself doing more damage with that.

With Ayla, it actually is worthwhile to do that, since her techs can't outclass that damage like Robo's can. But by level ** you're pretty much gods already...

The reason it is win is because you don't have to wait for the lavos core to stop defending to do major damage.

Yes, but the probability is still so low that you're only likely to get, maybe, one hit in. It's not even that hard to make the right bit lower its defense... You can kill the left bit in one turn.

But V's right, we're straying off-topic.

Oh, I think a "Nice Job Breaking It Hero" could work, what with Zeal's quote near the end...

Quote from: Zeal
Ah. So it's okay to kill one if I save two? Splendid! <b>You've just bestowed on me a blank check to carry out my dreams.</b>

I dunno though... Like I said, I'm not a troper... o_O

I'm not sure I really agree with "Downer Ending" -- It's more of a Bittersweet Ending, in my opinion. It's not like Porre is totally evil or anything, and Marle even says herself that she wouldn't have made a good ruler, so it isn't like a "OMG MY LIFE IZ RUINEDZ!!!1!!!1!" moment for her. Plus, if you didn't use the Time Egg, I'd consider Crono and Marle going on adventures in the Dreamtime to be a bit of a "Happy Ending" for them.

Also, we see at the end Janus being taught how to make a Gate, so we know he hasn't given up yet and will probably find a way into the DBT again to rescue Schala.

I agree that overall, CE was a lot darker than CT, but I wouldn't say the ending is a "Downer" one -- the other characters have very happy endings, I thought...

But I'm not an expert troper. I just read, I don't edit, so what would I know. :/

The mirrors are crappier versions of Rage Bands, basically. They have a 25% counter rate on any attack that isn't the characters' element. And there's one for each character. Not worth it at all, but you'll still need them if you want to fill out your item list.

As for Nu Arcana... I got it once, but I have no clue how it works. o_O

And that's an interesting strategy, Rocky! I'm sure it'll help some people. Interesting that you can get all the mirrors on Tier 1... Aren't the chances higher on higher tiers, though? o_O

** is the maximum -- you can't increase a stat above that. Once a stat reaches **, you can't increase it by use of capsules or anything else.

Also, Strength Capsules are much less valuable than Magic ones -- I'm pretty sure that every character other than Marle and Lucca either maxes out Strength or comes close to it by level **. Magic, on the other hand, I'm pretty sure never maxes out for any character. (Janus and Lucca probably come close, though)

Oh, and make use of Ayla's Charm spell in the final dungeon. There are enemies there that you can steal capsules from. You can also win capsules in the Arena.

Oh, I see... So Braveheart isn't so ungodly when Glenn doesn't have a max of 999 HP... That makes sense. Nirvana Strike isn't dealing 3000+ damage either. So I guess I'd have to retract my statement about Glenn being broken. Still, it doesn't seem fair that all the others get awesome new techs, yet CML are stuck with their originals... "Ice Pulse" for Marle would have been awesome and made her more bearable as a solo character. Ah well.

But...when you said that we might see new techs in a playable ROM modification soon, did you really mean it...? I thought SE said "Not just CE, no ROM modifications, PERIOD!", so... o_O

Oh, and I loved the alternate endings. I always thought the majority of the endings in CT were dissapointing or "joke endings" -- the only "real" endings were What the Prophet Seeks, Reuinion, Beyond Time (obviously) and (maybe) the developer's ending. (By the way, I'm a bit sad you didn't put in a developer's ending, would you have done that in the completed version? Then again, you do have the developer's room already, so I suppose that's already a bit of a "developer's ending"...) However, in CE, the endings actually had purpose to them and were actual endings. I liked that. They helped flesh out the story, and I loved "Zeality's Dream". XD

Sigh...what a month this could have been! :( Oh well. The Compendium's still alive, and overanalyzing as usual, so...life goes on, I guess. :)

Hi, sorry I haven't been posting recently, I'm more of a reader that a poster. However, I would like to give a bit of a "review" of Crimson Echoes, not that the playthrough has been fully uploaded.

First off, awesome job. Truly a spectacular piece of art. Loved the storyline; ties up a lot of loose ends and connects CT to CC extremely well. However, there are some flaws to it, and it's a pity it was never completed. I must say, though, there were so many things that weren't added that I have to say I think it had a bit more than just "2%" to go before it was completed... I'd say it was more ~95% completed.

Battle balancing is one issue. I agree with a lot of people; Glenn is waaaay too overpowered. (So is Ayla, but she's optional, and is only available for the last third of the game or so...) Braveheart pulverizes pretty much everything even when Glenn isn't in critical health, and Nirvana Strike deals over 3000 damage?! o_O And yes, you did go crazy with Robo's techs...I liked them though. However, I think you should have toned down Braveheart a bit and had it replace Leap Slash, (though with the same animation: I think the "brave" would fit well with jumping really high into the air... o_O) and have Braveheart just be a normal line-hit tech. (I believe someone said this in an earlier thread) Some of the Flame Trial bosses, too... When comparing Yakra to Lavos Core, you see what I mean. Even though Crono is undoubtedly better than Marle at solo fights, that seems a bit...unbalanced. I agree that you should have made Marle a better solo character...

Plus there's the techs, like previous posters have said. How come Crono, Marle, and Lucca don't get new techs? D: Everyone else got awesome new techs, but they just had their normal ones... :/ I agree with other posters that learning the same techs that you learned in the original game can be a bit boring. Though I don't know a thing about coding, and you did say that editing Crono's techs messes up everything else... But I still would have liked to see some new techs for those three.

Music placement is another thing. You did well for most of the scenes, but some just don't work well in my opinion. Boss Battle 2 for the Atash Kedah scene, for example. Lavos's Theme would have worked better there, in my opinion. Also, A Ruined World for the Yakra battle in Marle's Flame trial and destroyed Truce don't really fit in my opinion; it sounds too futuristic, and the wind effect sounds really weird and out-of-place, too... The Day the World Revived/The Last Day of the World would have worked better for destroyed truce, in my opinion. Finally, the character's themes for the flame trials were a bit out of place...they sound too upbeat most of the time. I would have gone with something like "Strains of Insanity", though since they are supposed to be personal for each character, I can see why you'd think the themes would be good choices... Still, I think a creepy theme would have worked better for the trials.

The only other thing I didn't really like was that the destroyed Ocean Palace looked...weird... It didn't really look "destroyed", just had its pieces moved around a bit... o_O But you did the best you could, so I don't mind. Oh, and the Time Eggs being handed out like party favors, though that's already been discussed to death...

Not that all that matters, since the game will never be completed... *sigh*, SE, why did you have to kill such a wonderful fan project...? Oh well. The rest of the game was great, though. I loved the storyline, even if it was a bit dark, though I don't mind that. The new areas and such were pretty cool too. It was great to watch. You guys definitely outdid yourselves with this.

The Chrono Compendium - Just because your mother went insane, your father got vaporized, and your sister got devoured by a monster doesn't mean you have to become a vindictive monster.

...Works better, I think. But that's just my opinion. :p

Sigh, I can't seem to make up good slogans anymore... :/ Oh well. I made a lot of them. Hopefully at least one of them got used... (Did they? Does anyone know...?)

Site Updates / Re: Cease & Desist Letter
« on: May 13, 2009, 07:48:05 am »
Agh... And just when I was looking forward to this so much...

I know this is a bit late, but... I kind of suffer from this too, since it includes all ROM hacks, and the main reason I joined here was to give my input on some of the hacks... (The Schala Project especially -- I spent a lot of time writing up the script for that...)

Sigh... It's sad, but that's life. It's cruel and unfair. And I don't really blame the development team for their decision. Sometimes you just have to play it safe. The people swearing and bashing SE saying "Who cares? Just release it!" need to stop. You're only hurting the Compendium's image. I know it's been said already, but if this got released, the development team would get blasted to pieces by SE, who has actual, experienced lawyers for this kind of thing, wheras the Compendium does not. Oh, and they might shut down the Compendium too. Do you really want to risk all that on the off-chance that the team will actually win?

I only play these kinds of games for the story anyway, so if there were playthrough videos or plot summaries uploaded (if that won't get the Compendium in more trouble) that would be fine with me. It's not as good as actually playing the game, but I'll live. Someone suggested earlier in the thread to make a "shrine" to Crimson Echoes, and I think that's a good idea.

Well... *sigh* I won't leave, but I won't be posting much anymore. Kajar Laboratories was an amazing place, and I'm sad to see it leave...

Oh man. Really? That must have been...confusing. And embarrassing for Justin. -_-;

And honestly, the bolded CTDS font is...hm... I don't like it all that much, honestly... I like the other one that gave more space. The spacing also seems a bit odd - the spaces between letters look a little too big. But eh, whatever Justin wants to use.

Wow, Z, I read the interview FaustWolf posted, and wow! Amazing job! One suggestion I have, though: If you want to stay faithful to the Japanese names, try using the VWF hack to give you more room. (I absolutely hate item names that don't show what they are... e.g. "Platinum" instead of "Platinum Vest"...)

But great job nonetheless, Z! I'm really looking forward to this! :D

I voted Other: All of the Above. o_O

And as much as I like Pokemon, I still think the Chronomon thing would be terrible.

Actually, ALL OF THEM WOULD BE TERRIBLE. o_O I just couldn't choose, so I voted "all of the above"...
