Lavos, the Planet, and other Entities / How did lavos absorb DNA?
« on: March 23, 2012, 08:41:55 pm »
One thing that has always bothered me is that I keep hearing about Lavos "absorbing" DNA into its own and also directing the evolution on the planet, but it is not clear to me how it can do so.

Seeing as how Lavos is buried (and possibly dormant) deep within the planet, it never actually is able to make any physical contact with organisms from the surface world except for possibly upon its landing on earth and the 2 times that it had surfaced (12000BC and 1999AD).  Is it physically gathering this DNA?  If so, by what means?  It certainly does not have access to the corpses of deceased organisms when it is buried that deeply in the planet.

If it is simply observing the genetic makeup of organisms and integrating certain traits into itself, how is it performing this observation?  To my understanding, other than the frozen flame and mammon machine, there is no other way in which Lavos can sense and influence anything on the surface.  That is the whole reason why it had to burst through surface in 12000BC and 1999AD, because the only way it could influence the surface world was physically.  If instead it were able to "psychically" read and alter the genetic makeup of organisms on the surface, then it could have just easily unleashed some sort of genetic disorder or disease that would wipe out surface life in 1999AD from the comfort of being below the surface instead of putting itself at risk by surfacing (which ultimately lead to its demise).

Any thoughts?

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Dream Devourer's Diet
« on: January 29, 2011, 02:56:34 am »
One thing that I've been wondering is why the Dream Devourer was given its name.  We know from dialog in CC that the Time Devourer "consumes all space-time at maturity".  From my recollection of CT:DS, there is no dialog even mentioning the dream devourer at all.  Does it actually consume dreams?  And if so, how?

Looking at the Compendium entry on Lavos, http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Lavos.html#Chrono_Trigger_DS, we see that the Dream Devourer is "capable of feeding on thoughts, memories, and dreams across time".  This is exactly what happened when Magus spoke with Schala while she was part of the Dream Devourer.  His dream of freeing her was destroyed after their conversation and as a result, he abandoned all hope and ultimately inflicted self-amnesia, thus also being robbed of his thoughts and memories.

Is this a coincidence?  Was the dream devourer given its name because of its encounter/effect on Magus?  Another possibility is that the Schala whom Magus spoke with wasn't her consciousness at all, but really the Dream Devourer controlling her body the entire time to deceive Magus so as to feed off of his dreams (whom we all know has one of the strongest "thoughts, memories, and dreams" of all the characters in CT).

Thoughts??

We don't actually know whether Company 2400 is really from the year 2400.  For example, it's the year 2010 but we still have 20th Century Fox.

When fighting Crimson Shade (Dark Lucca)... the Eggsterminator that she had with her reminded me of the mini-robo that Lucca had in the ending movie when she finds the baby in the woods.  Although they do not look all that alike, Eggsterminator might possibly be the "battle mode" of the mini-robo.

If this is so, then are the shade versions of Crono, Lucca, and Marle future versions of themselves in some dimension?  In all 3 boss fights with the shades, it is always the shades that initiate the fight, meaning that they have some reason to want to fight chrono & co.  Are future versions of Crono & co purposely trying to stop the present versions from venturing further into the dimensional vortex?  Would Dalton have traveled to 1000 AD and raised the Porre army against Guardia anyways if he did not encounter (and was defeated once again by) Crono in the dimensional vortex?  Does the defeat of these future versions of Crono & co have anything to do with their absence in Chrono Cross?

Earthbound.  At that time (and maybe even today) it is one of the strangest game I've ever played.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: What gives the Mystics magic?
« on: September 23, 2009, 11:03:07 pm »
I think that the creatures on Mt. Woe (Creatures such as the imp, gargoyle, ogans, and the birds carrying the imps) are the early ancestors of the Mystics that we see in 600 A.D.  These early mystics were NOT creations of zeal as shown in CTDS where we see that similar "early mystics" appear in the Lost Sanctum (Reptite dimension, lavos didn't fall).

The early mystics that we see in 12000BC tend to be more primitive in that they rely more on brute strength (which is why they're stronger physically), don't have knowledge of magic (magic is usually associated with intelligence), and their bodies are colored to allow them to camouflage with their surroundings better (as opposed to the more brightly-colored mystics in 600AD).

So now, I have two questions:

1.  Did the "early mystics" in the Lost Sanctum have "magic"?  Some of them could use abilities such as Thunder II and Lightning II (if i remember correctly).  Does that count?  If so then that should shed some light on where mystics got their magical abilities from (the planet, not lavos).

2.   If mystics weren't created in zeal and even appear in a dimension where humans died early on and lavos didn't fall, then where did they come from?  Were they created by repitites?  Or have they always been around and in hiding since 65 million bc?
