Hey skylark, good to see you again!

And PrincessNadia, pleasure to make your acquaintance. It's a little late, but welcome to the best digital coffeehouse the Internet has to offer (if I do say so myself).

Looking forward to it! It'll be interesting to parse out potential plot threads Chrono Break might have had.

TUSHANTIN! Your work on Ronin and the Legends of the Kodiaks is seriously awesome, dude! It's amazing to come back and see how much you've progressed as an animator over the years. And I can't help but love how the old guy is portrayed, 'cause old guys should rock. And in your capable hands, he rocks! As Boo said, you're epitomizing the Springtime of Youth here.

I'll check into the "Story Grid" concept, that sounds really useful.

And since you invited non-Chrono works, I'll bite! This is a fantastic idea for an artistry-sharing thread. Your animation and Boo's mentioning screenplays inspired me to dust off a little ditty I did back in 2015: an adaptation of The Hollywood Standard screenplay format for a JRPG concept. I've just gotta figure out why the heck Final Draft is misbehaving on me...

Hah, no need to celebrate. I should be celebrating YOU, Guru of Life! For the most part, I'll be hanging back and quietly going through the forums as time allows. I have some PMs to catch up on too. I do have to admit seeing Dream Splash 2018 has given me a little itch to try a brief screenplay, but it depends on how other things in my life go over the next couple months. C'est la vie!

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Manabu Daishima: 1971 - 2016
« on: May 07, 2018, 10:16:36 pm »
Sorry to make my first thread after coming back such a downer, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else here --

While I was unplugged, Compendium signup manucas shared this link from Anime New Network. It's about the passing of Manabu Daishima, who did graphics work for Chrono Trigger among a number of classic Squaresoft/Square Enix games. I wonder which field graphics he might have contributed?

The only other thing I was able to dig up about him is his line from the Developer's Ending:

Manabu Daishima: Hey out there in TV land! How're we doing today? It's me,
Manabu Daishima! Let's all buy games, okay? None of this renting and borrowing
stuff!

Let's all raise a glass of hard cider in his honor!

Well hot damn, a lot's happened since I last checked in here! Huge congrats to the new Gurus -- a great deal of real sweat goes into safeguarding a community like this, and it's a huge relief to find the fanbase thriving again with the help of great caretakers. Well deserved honors all around!

Phew, gotta take some time to digest all this. I'm really surprised that Kato wasn't overseeing the story in the official Chrono Break project after all! One would hope that they would have pulled him in if it had gotten further. I would have enjoyed a blend of both his and Tokita's ideas for the story.

All right folks, it's time to throw on your "walk through walls" code and party like it's 1999! Check out this awesome episode of "Boundary Break," a YouTube series that delves into obscure secrets of game design as revealed by the camera's roving eye. In this episode Shesez and team explore some ingenious things the Chrono Trigger programmers did, from object pre-loading, to hidden event triggers, to hiding lots of down-and-dirty graphics work with layering. Whether you're a rank-and-file Chrono fan or a veteran member of the Chrono modding community, give this a gander -- you're sure to appreciate it, and you may even learn a thing or two!

Special props go to Compendium member utunnels, whose Chrono Cross model viewer gets a shout-out toward the end of the episode. Thanks to Shesez and company for helping to keep interest in this franchise alive!

I remember Square Enix put some Xenogears-related stuff into a game they were working on last year, so I'd say they still have a full awareness of their more obscure intellectual properties.

I just wish they'd realize the gold mine they've been sitting on with Chrono, how indies would kill for that kind of built-in brand awareness, but anyway, that's preaching-to-the-choir stuff. I do worry that with each year that goes by, more Chrono fans pass into the Grey Havens that exist beyond following videogames day-to-day, and thus said gold mine has shrunk to the point that SE will no longer care about it at all. BUT -- for sure Xenogears is a step below Chrono in SE's catalogue of IPs, so there's always that faint ray of hope.

I'm no artist, but as a sprite connoisseur I must say the frames are excellent, stewelement!

I wanted to make an animated gif to check out how natural the flow is, but I'm not quite sure the proper order the sprites should go in. So far I've got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and then some additional progression would end with 7?

General Discussion / Re: Anime Suggestions Thread

Holy crikey, it's been five years already? Time really does fly!

How do you feel about Princess Mononoke? Strong central female character, and lotsa animals. But then again, there's freaky monsters and gunplay and I think some intimation that the antagonist's factory is staffed by former prostitutes... Dang, I never appreciated how tough these media decisions must be for parents!

The other things that spring to my mind are Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Howl's Moving Castle, but of course they're already Miyazaki.

Going outside anime for the moment, there's always Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal. But to this day I find the Skeksis and the eyeball-holding witch pretty disturbing, so yeah...
