Magic, Elements, and Technology / Re: "Luminair"
« on: April 10, 2007, 10:16:16 am »
Sorry to be reviving an old thread but I thought I could clear a few things up that were raised.

Just to point out, Luminaire is used in industry these days as a more technical word for lantern. In other words, a source of light from an electrical base. As Google brings up a few definitions:

# A complete lighting unit consisting of a lamp or lamps together with the parts designed to distribute the light, to position and protect the lamps and to connect the lamps to the power supply.

# The lighting industry uses this term to encompass a "lighting fixture" or "fitting." Luminaires are grouped by mounting type and locations.

Now doesn't this strike a bell. Electrical source of power... providing light. In the Americanized version, Crono's innate element being "Lightning", his most obvious type of magic is his source of "Lightning" element. Moving on Chrono Cross, where Luminaire is an attack based on "chi" or spiritual energy, as the game directly states... This is also supportive of Crono's innate element in the Japanese version, Heavens, which may be interpreted as a source of spirits (but that's not to say there are demonic spirits). So there you have it, Luminaire, an attack based on "chi" related to the "Heavens" that not necessarily means the attack is based on "Lightning"...yet, comes from a source of Lightning element, just like a symbol for its literal definition.

Using the definition of Luminaire, its pretty interesting that both arguments raised in the thread are supported!

Magic, Elements, and Technology / Re: Alchemy in Chrono Trigger

Coming back to the topic in relation to the elements, "everything", Spekkio and the sort.....

Very rarely does "everything" ever mean "everything" literally. For example, when you say you want "everything", you cannot want happiness and want sadness, let alone want to have one thing and want two things at the same time. Whenever the word "everything" is used, you cannot assume every single tangible and intangible object or subject is being included. When Spekkio says Everything is based on the four elements in Chrono Trigger, he was not meant to be talking in relation to willpower and whatnot. Even in the slim chance that those WERE meant to be included, it does not mean elements are the only deciding factors for which willpower etc occur.

Also, with the point on different magic being made up of different chains of "S,S,W", etc... I don't think it can be simplified to be so easy to understand if we are talking about the understanding of the Chrono Trigger world, of course you may say so if it were based on the "video game" sense, but I see magic more as a infinite scale on which "elements" (out of lightning, water, ice and shadow) have variable strengths, assuming that magic is purely based on these four elements as Spekkio said.

If you understand what I mean, please help me clarify my ideas, or if you don't, you might as well question my ideals.

Magic, Elements, and Technology / Re: What makes someone an Innate?
« on: April 09, 2007, 02:33:54 am »
Magic then must be within every descendant of a Zeal, which is why Ayla doesn't have magic herself. The Enlightened ones joined with the Earthbound ones and over time, the Zealean bloodline must have spread to the entire population of the CT world. So what is magic then? It could be that because every human has a inner strength known as magic, that everyone could be able to awaken their magical power through special circumstances. Spekkio's role in CT is to unlock those circumstances within each of the characters as to allow them to use their innate element.

Is there any evidence on what affects the strength of a character's magic is? For example, why do some characters have stronger magic just generally over other characters? I'm proposing that it could be how strong the Zealean bloodline resides in that character that affects their magical prowess...Lucca? Any ideas?
