General Discussion / Re: My SNES portable, for sale!
« on: September 19, 2006, 02:21:51 am »
I just listed my SNESp on Ebay. So what are you waiting for? GO BID, LAZY!!!

As for a website with all my mods, I have one, but it is currently being re-vamped. You're best off just going to the forums at www.benheck.com and looking up my work there. It's not too hard to find; it's everywhere! :D

I'm not finding it in the rules, unless it's on SMF. I think exchanging Chrono items is fine.
Thanks a bunch, ZeaLitY! So, any takers? I could probably throw in a couple of games from my generous supply of SNES stuff, if you wanted; I know I have a few copies of LoZ: ALttP to spare.

It is? Crud. Sorry for breaking the rules. I'll just lock it, I guess.

General Discussion / My SNES portable, for sale!

Yes, that's right. My portable Super Nintendo that I built a while back is going up for sale. It can be seen here. I'm selling it because I'm currently building a PSTwo portable; I opted to have the case professionally built via vaccum former, so it's costing a bit more than I expected. I would include the charger and the system itself. For price? I'm thinking somewhere in the ballpark of $200, but that's negotiable. I've got this up at a few other forums, so I'll let you know if it gets sold.

Thanks,
CTFan

PS: Let me know if I'm breaking any rules by doing this.

I think we've all had a dream of getting into the gaming industry at one point in our lives. Some pass it off as unlikely, others pursue it; in my case, I am a pursuer.

I grew up on the greats, of course; Mario, Kirby, Star Fox, and Battletoads were some of my favorites. Back then, of course, I had no idea what being a video game designer was all about, but I knew what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing.

As my mind started to develop, though, I began moving on from simple side-scrollers to RPGs; I understood the battle mechanics, and could follow the basic storylines, and the structure and scale was mesmirizing, especially for a 5-year-old. It wasn't until much later, though, that I started to realize the TRUE scope of the RPG genere.

Before I go any farther, I want you all to understand this: I'm not exactly a normal kid. I think that's the best way to put it. While others are watching MTV and Spike, I'm spending my free time watching Fox News, listening to Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity (and have done so since the 4th grade). While others still are playing basketball and football, I was playing golf and doing martial arts. An ideal vacation for me would be going to a museum or art exhibit rather than gallivanting around town or attending mindless social gatherings. Now that's not to say I don't enjoy normal stuff as well, it's just that what is defined as "normal" by most is just not that high on my priority list.

Now, back to games; After being drawn into the fantastic world of RPGs and Adventure games, around the age of 10 or 11, I began to replay some of the games of my younger days just for fun. Enter Chrono Trigger. The first time I played Trigger, I loved it for the combat, the action, and the fact that Chrono looked like Goku. But this second time around, it was different; I began to notice all the social commentary, religious aspects, political statements, and philosophies instilled into Chrono Trigger. Ever since, I've been analyzing game plots, where they're rooted, and where they stand.

I've always been very opinionated, philosophically rooted, and not a bad writer to boot. I've been giving programming a shot, and although I'm pretty good at math, it's just too....linear for my train of thought. So how else do I get into the gaming industry if not by way of programming? Well, I recently read an article on Kazushime Nojima, and then it hit me: Scenario writer. I could create the worlds I wanted to create, add the philosophies and political statements I wanted to add, and fight back against the things I hate most about this world and its citizens; I could create a new generation of thinkers through a beautiful yet entertaining mass-media.

Recently, I've been getting into writing plots heavily; one has developed to the point that it has been suggested to me countless times by many to get the work copywritten before I let anyone read it, which is the process I am now going through. I've got great ideas, sure, but where do I go with them?

I'm now 14, and am going to be a Freshman this year; so now to the ACTUAL question: From here on out, how should I gear myself towards getting myself into the gaming industry as a scenario writer? What high school/college courses should I take, how do I get my name out there, are there people who look at this stuff, even at such a young age? This is my dream and has been so forever. Thus, I am willing to do anything to chase it, and achieve it undoubtedly. Any other advice from you guys would be much appreciated!

Sorry for this abnormally large post, but I think you guys had to know a bit more about me before giving me advice; I know, it's a departure from the usual CTFan, but it had to be a bit more serious; it's the emotion the time called for.

Thanks for reading,
Josh, aka CTFan

Lavos had no reason to destroy the planet(except he needed the wasted land for his eggs to hatch, but I don't think so, it would be more likely that humans may have been a danger to these eggs), and so do we Humans.
Well in that case, look at the eggs of Lavos not as actual beings, but beliefs; look how the Taliban is run, Hesbolla(sp?), and other terrorist groups. Their sole purpose is destruction, and that wasted land brings way to new followers. Same principal, no?

Lavos may be a mirror. Ok, maybe an abstract mirror, but still one. It could show us, that, if we go on like we do, the world is doomed.
My opinion.
That's exactly what I meant when I said "philosophical statement"!

As Chrono fans, I think we sometimes tend to take Lavos too literally; we view him as important to the world of Trigger and Cross, (as we should, but just go with me here) instead of possibly thinking of Lavos not as a being, but a statement.

Perhaps the creators of the Chrono series put Lavos in the game to represent their believed destiny of our own world. In a sense, our world definitely has its seemingly emotionless "parasites". Lavos a political statement? Perhaps. Lavos a philosophy? Also possible. Not one I'd like to live my life by, but a philosophy none the less.

We know Square has a history of sneaking social commentary into their games, and I think we should view Lavos as no different. Whether you view him as a simple parasite or something more, he, as I now believe, is a statement.

General Discussion / Shadow of the Colossus: Is it THAT good?

Just answer that simple question! :D I've wanted to purchase it for a while now, but I'd like some opinions of game philosophers such as myself before I do.

Lavos, the Planet, and other Entities / Re: Lavos' "persona"
« on: July 22, 2006, 04:16:34 am »
Good and Evil is based on opinion. if Lavos acts at will or instinct isn't shown ingame as far as I know. Maybe the TD who tries to stop ya from rescuring Schala by interupting the Cross pattern, but this way of thinking could also come from the fusion with Schale or the Dragon God.

Just to make sure I got it right:
Lavos came to earth "good"-> he collected the Human DNA(changed by the Frozen Flame, if it was Lavos' intention is beyond me) -> humans are corrupted, so he became, too. Okey?
To a certain degree; Lavos may not have come to Earth "good", however, because he may have recieved DNA from his previous generation that was corrupt to begin with. Although the aspect of the Frozen Flame being part of Lavos's plan is intriguing; perhaps Lavos was just a test sent from The Entity, and the Frozen Flame was was humanity's ultimate right of passage, depending on the decisions made for mankind? Something tells me I may be on to something here....

Plus, the whole thing would be very shinto, a cliche SquEnix compilation...

Now that Magus's desire is sated, should he be punished? He will not be. His actions, self-will, and genius transcend what others would do to him. He may have killed thousands, but he helped save the infinite progeny of the human race by destroying Lavos. It's not that he has to do some act of good to tip the scales back towards being a good person -- it is that he has truly changed. Would you punish him after the fact?
You forget, he CAN be punished! And as Magus sought vengeance on Lavos, others still seek vengeance on him....namely a little character known as Frog.

Lavos...  Well, he was powerful.  He did succeed for a time.  But he didn't really have any personality, nor did he make you fear him.  That's why I don't put him up top.
For a time? FOR A TIME?!?!? LAVOS SUCCEDED FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS! I think he deserves a bit more credit. To me, Lavos was terrifying; true, he may not have had a personality of his own, (or at least one that we could see from the outside,) but it was everything that he signified, and the things he caused on the surface because of that. He stood for EVERY ONE of the Seven Deadly Sins in his own way, and thus corrupted mankind for it, causing social havoc and mankind screwing itself over time and time again. Fear is a great weapon, and Lavos instilled more fear than any other SE villan just because he was there; because destruction was inevitable. That's more than Sephiroth ever did!

Well, I did find the full song in torrent form that I downloaded (it's in mp3 format), but I didn't know if we were allowed to post links to torrents on this forum. Are we?

General Discussion / Re: The best animetion show????
« on: July 21, 2006, 03:35:58 am »
Here's my personal best animation list:

Top awards:

Samurai Champloo
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Iria: Zeiram the Animation
Lupin III

Runner ups:

Akira
Berserk
Hellsing
Mobile Suit Gundam
Trigun
Tsubasa

Honorable mentions:

Card Captor Sakura
Dragon Half
Excel Saga
Neon Genesis Evangelion
School Rumble

WHAT?!?! Where's FMA? I mean, those are some okay anime, but for FMA not even to make the cut? That scares me. ESPECIALLY when Card Captor Sakura is just taking up space...

For all of you who've been asking, here's a guide to make your very own PSp! Jeffslot, of the benheck.com forums, typed up this how-to. This portable is to be built by people who we at the hacking forum call "technologically retarted". It's the every-man's portable; pretty much anyone (and boy, do I mean ANYONE) could build it. Take a look:

http://portablesofdoom.org/page.php?page=playstation

You can get a better battery for it, because the one shown in the how-to, quite frankly, sucks. A mere hour (if not less) of playtime, plus it's Ni-Cd to boot! You can also LED mod the backlight of the PSp to give the system a HUGE power consumption knock-down.

In the end, you'll have a very simple, laptop-style PSp. However, you can turn it into something like this, provided your soldering skills are competent:
(This isn't mine, it's Atkafighter's, but one of the PSp's I made looks exactly the same)

So, there you have it! Good luck for those trying this out, and I can help if you get stuck. PlayStation was the system I was getting the most questions about; however, if there's another one that you'd like to see a how-to for, I could dig up a good one. If one is not in existance, I could probably write one for you!

I'd say Lavos, with Kefka as a close second. I'd also throw Magus in the mix, but that's only if you count him as a villan...

I looked into the log, and somebody did ban CT Fan last night for about five minutes...but I don't know who did it or why. This is something one of the admins should look at.
Thanks for looking into it! Whatever it was, it scared the crap out of me; I had no clue what I did!

On another note, after a couple hours of research, I found out that the song is called Karma, and it's by Bump of Chicken. Now if only I could find an mp3 download...
