Title: Anime Suggestions Thread
Post by: Mr Bekkler on April 10, 2011, 02:25:25 pm
Anyone who knows me pretty well knows I'm generally not a fan of anime. As such, I am quite ignorant of what's out there. However, I am familiar with DBZ, Sailor Moon, and some others that came on cartoon network years ago, and I don't like them very much. I remember enjoying Robotech, but tried to watch it again in sequence on Netflix and had to stop.

It's just that I don't like stuff taking place in a seemingly entirely fantastic fictional world,  then suddenly including a lot of overtly japanese cultural references for the sake of the japanese audience. This is because I'm not japanese, and just don't get it. I don't think it's stupid, I will recognize it as simple cultural differences.

What I'm looking for is anime in the vein of Full Metal Alchemist/FMA:B, Gurren Lagann, and Cowboy Bebop. Something made for American and Japanese audiences equally, with engrossing storytelling. To specify, each of these series features a minimal (or specific to the series) amount of japanese weirdness. For example, Robotech, Gundam, Voltron, etc are all just giant robots. Gurren Lagann is giant robots that look like faces, which makes it different from "typical" anime.

So I'm creating this thread in hopes you Compendiumites can give me good suggestions for what to tackle next. The more like Full Metal Alchemist or Chrono Trigger the better, but make sure you include reasons the series you're suggesting isn't just typical schoolgirls, giant robots, and nosebleed fare (don't just write a list). No, forget hope. I'm CHALLENGING you to think of anime someone like me may enjoy.

PS. Films are ok too, I've seen Akira already. Watching Appleseed as I type. Also feel free to use this thread to discuss what you like or don't like about anime in general or specific franchises.

Hah, Appleseed?  :D Ex Machina was rad too!

With the sheer number of anime out there, I only prefer those that are grand. The best of the apples, and no, I don't consider Bleach as a masterpiece. It's more of a fun-to-watch experience. If you're looking for anime that work well with American audience AND are masterpieces with amazing storyline, here's follows:

1) Baccano! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kshRUZzo1gQ) - Like Godfather/Pulp Fiction/Mafia? Like Fullmetal Alchemist? Intense comedy? Paired with demons? How about all of those in one scoop? Takes place in Manhatten, America, Prohibition Era. This anime is quite breathtaking and will leave you wondering "What happens next" all day. The story is fascinating, the characters are memorable, and nobody knows who the main character/villain is, so nobody knows who's gonna die next.  So many to kill, and so little time! There's a lot this anime has to offer. (English Dub recommended)

2) Deathnote (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhzikdFMv7Y) -If you guys have watched every anime in the world and not this, shame on you all! Deathnote is a God-sent thriller, introducing two of the best, memorable characters the world has ever seen. The story is about a High School kid who finds a notebook of death. The person, who's name is written in the note, shall die. Armed with this weapon the protagonist chooses to dream, to change the world and become God. But someone seems to be on his track: an elusive detective who is only known as L. This anime is a must watch for any thriller/suspense fan, whether or not they like anime. This plot is a rollercoaster of a lifetime!

Can't think of more right now, but I'll let ya know if I remember.

Last Exile is a story about a pair of young courier pilots that become involved in a drawn-out, chivalric war between two nations. Set in a Victorian-esque world where the technological focus is set on aerial machinery, the series tends to focus more on the characters more so than the world itself, as there isn't a great deal of back story describing how the world came to be in the predicament that it's in. It's not a particularly long series, spanning 26 episodes, but I felt the plot worked well given the spectrum: it didn't feel too drug out or ended too early.

There's a number of fun battle scenes, ranging from WWI-style dogfights to battalions of riflemen engaging on another from massive, airborne troop ships. Scenes like these are not everyone's cup of tea, but aerial enthusiasts or gear heads will get a kick out of it.

There weren't a lot of Japanese cultural references that I can recall, but I tend to be rather oblivious to such things if I'm not somewhat familiar with them.

I agree with tripehound - Last Exile is HIGHLY worth it.

If you loved Cowboy Bebop, I must also recommend Wolf's Rain and Samurai Champloo. If you come down for Lance's wedding we can watch some episodes of Samurai Champloo!

Also, think about Trigun. It's a great western sci-fi - if not the very best. Great story, fun music, and the lead character (Vash the Stampede) is a real hoot - especially when you start seeing his personality against his personal history. It's really quite awesomesauce!

Yeah, gotta third Last Exile. The opening of the first episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2YyBkYkUIM#t=01m52s), especially, is freaking brilliant.

If you're up for some dystopian weirdness that starts out very thought provokingly and then completely loses it about a third of the way through the series, the first five or six episodes of Ergo Proxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55346kFpAvY) are a great time.

I'm gonna have to check out Baccano now. Dayum, that does look interesting.

What kind of tolerance for weirdness do you have? That is, you mentioned plenty of cliches, but is surreality okay?

Boo, I've seen Wolf's Rain. It moves really slowly but the music is brilliant (some of it is in Chrono Shift). And I'm definitely coming so we'll get down on some Champloo.

Syna, surrealism is touchy for me. I love Dali, I hate MSPaint disasters. Really depends on context and quality, I guess. If it adds to the overall experience or story, I think any style could be fair game.

Tushantin, I watched the first episode of Baccano and Death Note. Baccano in particular has a really interesting feel to it. The accents are hilarious, but not distractingly so. I'm liking it. Gonna check out the other ones as soon as I get a chance.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_00) Yes, I said Gundam. But this series, 50 episodes long, is very ... political. The "giant robots" are only a means to an end, and definitely not the focus of the show. Then again, this is the only Gundam series I have seen, so I can't compare. However, the story is superb. Watch the intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44kW-HOsRY8), see if it catches your interest. I recommend the music as well.

Also, S-CRY-ed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-CRY-ed) was my first anime. Might not be up your ally though.

EDIT: It seems the first episode I linked to does not have the opening summary of the series I was hoping to show you. I'll fix that after school.

Ah, Gundam! I've never really seen all the episodes. I once watched Mobile Suit Gundam (the first anime in the series) and it was... pretty amusing and classic. Then two after that (Zeta, I suppose) and I kinda liked Schar's character. Then, though I didn't watch Gundam Wing, I did watch "Endless Waltz". Hah, I guess I missed the anime after that. It was too much goodness to bear.

I'll really have to take a look at Gundam 00! Heard they were powered on renewable energy.

EDIT: This reminds me. I've got some pretty interesting anime suggestion, but I'll let you guys know once I get home.

A KITTEH version of Orpheus legend. Now I've seen everything.  :o One of these days I'm gonna watch all of these works! *shakes fist*

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5tgCgskXys) What do you get when you squeeze in masterpieces like Mobile Suit Gundam with Deathnote, with a slice of Pizza Hut? You get Clamp's next masterpiece (if Tsubasa Chronicles didn't get so fucked up). Takes place at Japan, which is now called Area 11 after its defeat by Britannia. The story starts the same way as Deathnote, but takes a new leap almost instantly: A high school kid sees how rotten the world is, and is given supernatural powers to change the world and become God. If Kira was a criminal mastermind, Lelouch is FUCKING NAPOLEON. With the help of unmatched intelligence, a handful of rebels, some Mobile Suits called Knightmares, a power to make anybody obey his commands, and a cool Secret Identity, Lelouch takes on the world powers in war, with a pledge to destroy every Empire, and become the sole Emperor of the New World.

Oh, and also...
Quote from: sephiros9999, from Youtube comment
What do we learned from Code Geass?? That Pizza Hut is the shit and we shoud eat it, Zero commands all of us to eat it ! ! ! !

All Hail Lelouch, All Hail Pizza Hut

In that case, I would look into Satoshi Kon. I'm honestly not that well-versed in anime, and I feel that the surrealism in his works helps underscore greater insights that he has. I'd recommend him to anyone, sympathies for anime's style or no. He wrote the series Paranoia Agent, and the films Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress and Perfect Blue.

Yeah, I realize that there's a lot of fantasy-grade stuff in it, but if you have an open sense of humor, FLCL (Fooly Cooly, Furi Kuri, or whatever other name it happens to have) is a must. It's not so much the world itself that's amazingly fantastic as it is the stuff that the characters do. I mean, when was the last time you saw a girl hide a spring-loaded boxing glove in her vagina because she knew that her host was a complete and total pervert?
Title: Re: Anime Suggestions Thread
Post by: FaustWolf on April 11, 2011, 08:24:03 pm
Oooh, every mention of Millennium Actress gets a complementary FW "Squeeee!" What an astounding achievement in film, and not just in anime! I hesitated to recommend it because it's heavily imbued with Japanese cultural thingies, but maybe that won't bother Mr Bekkler as much since it's more of an historical necessity in the film's real world context and doesn't feel out of place at all.

I can't watch Perfect Blue anymore unless it's the Spanish dub. They really got all the characters right IMO! I think it speaks to the fact that Kon's work has a certain insight that transcends culture and language completely.

Hey, Syna or anyone familiar with Paranoia Agent -- is this seriously the opening credits before each episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-anabfAg06U)? The fact that I took it for a spoof on Chrono Trigger Unglued shows how behind I am on my anime.

Oh! Sheesh! How could I not recommend Monster? (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3j57h_monster-opening_blog) It's a 70+ episode extravaganza, unfortunately uneven (I guess that's why I prefer film anime to series in general). But it's got a lot of really good ones, and managed to pull me through to the end. It has an Omen-like premise, but with Nazis, and there's nothing supernatural actually happening despite how couched the story is in apocalyptic thingies. I think -- I'm actually still trying to figure out what the ending meant.

Mmph. This represents the boiled-down overlap of two much longer lists ("good anime" and "anime not primarily set in modern Japan or a para-Japanese world"). I'm presenting these in alphabetical order, and with a warning that I suck at descriptions (and that the name spellings I'm most familiar with may not match those of the Wikipedia articles I've linked). Most of these shows have adult protagonists, so there's a notable shortage of scantily-clad schoolgirls ;P Also, they're mostly older series.

Berserk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk_%28manga%29): Dark, violent and often rather gory fantasy series about a mercenary soldier who gets embroiled in seamy politics and evil magic. I first saw this fansubbed around the time Cowboy Bebop was first released in English, and it wasn't new then, so don't expect the visual quality of a modern show. Be warned that the manga was unfinished at the time it was produced (I'm not sure if they've hit the end even now), so a lot of threads are left dangling. Do not watch in the presence of children--in addition to the violence, it deals (albeit not graphically) with child abuse and other forms of nastiness.

Crest of the Stars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crest_of_the_stars): Distant future hard-SF series, kind of hard to describe. We follow the adventures of an ordinary teenaged boy who has, due to a quirk of interstellar politics, become a minor noble in an empire ruled by genetically manipulated not-quite-humans, as he begins a required term of military service with these culturally different people and befriends a young woman closely related to their empress. Slow-paced. Adapted from a novel. There are a couple of sequels if you like this one.

Escaflowne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escaflowne) (the TV series, not the movie): This one does begin at a Japanese high school, but if you can get past the first episode, it moves onward and upward. Um, the short version: a Japanese teenager is transported to a world populated by beastmen, knights, dragons, giant robots, and other weirdness, and gets tangled up in a war. No summary I could fit in one paragraph could possibly do this show justice--it's fast-paced, tightly plotted, and the characters are brilliantly portrayed. The music was composed by Yoko Kanno, who also wrote the score for Wolf's Rain. A classic.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nausica%C3%A4_of_the_Valley_of_the_Wind_%28film%29): One of Miyazaki's earliest films, and I would go so far as to say that it's also his best. In a future where most of the world has been covered by a poisonous jungle, one young woman fights to save the valley that is her home from destruction.

Pandora Hearts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora_hearts): Take Alice in Wonderland, reflect it in a distorting mirror in a haunted funhouse, fold in a conspiracy of assassins, and dump the whole thing into a fantasy setting sprinkled with a soupçon of Time Crash, and you might get something like this show. In a nation whose capital was destroyed decades ago by a mysterious disaster, young nobleman Oz Besarius is about to come of age--except that the ceremony that would have marked this occasion is interrupted, and Oz gets thrown into a supernatural prison known as the Abyss for the crime of simply existing. His only hope of escape is to form a dangerous contract with one of the peculiar beings living there, the Chains...and when he does finally get out, years have passed in the outside world over a period that seemed only days long to him. Now Oz must figure out why his existence is dangerous, and what the Chain he contracted with really is (not to mention exactly what happened to the capital)... Unfortunately, the manga is (again) still running, so the story stops in the middle. I'm still hoping for another season.

Pumpkin Scissors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumpkin_Scissors): A quirky show that follows a military unit made up of misfits as they attempt to clean up the mess left behind by a major war, while at the same time dealing with class conflict and the results of some secret military research. Better than I've made it sound, but it also suffers from Unfinished Manga Disease.

Spice and Wolf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spice_and_wolf): When Lawrence the wandering trader visited the village of Pasloe during their harvest festival, he did not expect to find the local harvest goddess/nature spirit lying naked in his wagon the next morning! Her name is Horo the Wise Wolf, she wants to return to her nearly forgotten home in the forests of the north, and she figures that hitching a ride with Lawrence might get her there. The result is a slow-paced road trip series that combines a not-quite-romance between two adults with medieval economics and the politics of trade.

The Twelve Kingdoms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juuni_Kokki): This one also begins at a Japanese high school, but doesn't stay there for long. Youko's everyday life is suddenly interrupted by an attacking monster and a mysterious stranger who hails her as his queen. Confused and disturbed, she allows said stranger to transport her to the land he claims is her kingdom, but once they arrive there, the two of them are separated almost immediately. Youko is left to fight her way to the throne of Kei on an island where children literally grow on trees... This one is worth it for the quirky world-building alone (the culture is basically ancient China with magic and some really peculiar add-ons). Adapted from a series of light novels.

Utawarerumono (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Utawarerumono_episodes): Fantasy. The main character wakes up one morning with no memory and wearing a mask that he's unable to remove, but before he can find out exactly who he is, he makes the mistake of saving an ordinary villager from a local petty noble...and things snowball so wildly from there that he ends up leading a rebel army and conquering the country, which in turn complicates his search for his identity immensely.

I could probably come up with a dozen more good-but-not-great fantasy series in a similar vein. Also, I didn't include a number of favourites of mine that either are mostly set in Japan, or are just plain peculiar. Oh, and I second the recommendations of Trigun, Last Exile, and Monster.

Edit: @FW: Yes, that really is the opening of Paranoia Agent. Yes, it's bizarre. Then again, so is the show.

Looks like Last Exile is really popular! I'm loving these suggestions guys but if you want to post suggestions to each other or about anime you consider really good in general feel free, just remember to describe it as such. My first post is more guideline than rule.

Then again, I would not have a list of anime I'm actually interested in that was this long without asking for specifics. Just don't feel restricted by my personal nitpicks, that's my main point. :-)

Speaking of the first post, I like the way alfador put it. The overlap of two categories (like a venn diagram, right in the middle). Anime you'd consider both great and unconventional.

How can we not recommend Ghost in the Shell?!  :D  This anime's one of the legends, so I doubt there's any explanation needed. Two films and two anime seasons packed full of awesomeness. Terminator's got nothing on this chick!

I have to say, Last Exile is EXTREMELY captivating! AND it's on Netflix so I don't have to navigate animefreak.tv to watch it on my tv screen. Baccano is on there too. I was excited to see them so easily accessible.

Yay, someone else likes Millenium Actress! And yeah, that's why I suggested it. There's plenty of Japanese culture in it, but it's more of a backdrop and less "BIG MECHS SHORT SKIRTS KAMEYAMEHA!" Again, there's a reason for it.

I didn't know that the Spanish dub of Perfect Blue was that good -- I shall check it out, especially since I'm working on my Spanish atm.

And oh my god, the Paranoia Agent opening credits!   I promise that the series is... well, okay, it is that creepy and weird, but there's a lot to it. It's not weird just for the sake of being weird. But yes, that is accurate. By the tenth or so episode the opening freaked me so much that I could barely watch it...

No matter what your tastes may be, there are certain legendary classics that every anime fan ought to watch. These anime are the pride of Japan and anime fans across the globe; they're precious jewels that can never be replaced. Not even by the likes of Gurren Lagann. Allow me to introduce you to the timeless classics:

1) Rurouni Kenshin / Samurai X: Tales of the Wanderer: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l699QBJj5mI) The story follows a humble man named Kenshin Himura, a lone wanderer offering protection or helping hand to people in exchange for shelter and food for a few days, but bumps into a woman named Kaoru, who is threatened by a murderer claiming to be the famed Battosai the Slasher. Throughout the journey the wanderer makes friends and his past is revealed, one enemy after another, little bit at a time. And we wonder... is this wanderer still the ruthless beast he once was? Or is he trying to redeem himself? He lives like saint, but dies like a legend!  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teyzv2SeGIQ)

The art is beautiful. The music is magnificent. The fight scenes are breathtaking. The characters are memorable. The story is heart wrenchingly, tear-jerkingly, epic funny-ly awesome! What more could a fan want? It is historical. It is poetic. It makes you laugh at times and cry at another. It gives you the spirit to face reality and want to make a change. It gives you the courage to face your destiny, and it changes the way people think. It is a story of loyalty, friendship, betrayal, hope, redemption, love and murder. This series has been, and always will be, a masterpiece! Like other classics, Samurai X is one anime that should never be ignored by any anime fan for whatever reason.

So tell me: have you faced yourself today? If not, FEEL THE WEIGHT OF KENSHIN'S BLADE! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoU_qtKtahM)

2) Fushigi Yûgi: The Mysterious Play:  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8FdKXb0drA)The story follows two high-school girls at a library, rummaging through books and finding one labelled "The Universe of Four Gods". Upon opening opening the book, they are pulled into an altogether different dimension resembling ancient China. Miaka is then mistaken for a priestess of Suzaku, destined to find the Seven Celestial Warriors and summon their God Suzaku, who shall grant three wishes. Upon her quest she encounters worlds of fantasy and magic that put Harry Potter's world to shame, somehow falls in love with one of her own warriors. This describes various trials Miaka must face, both quest driven and personal, and the final answer to it all is just isn't simple.

It's a Shoujo anime, meaning it's meant for chicks, but that doesn't mean guys can't enjoy it (agreed, it's often too lovey-dovey for my style, but I personally loved the sexy bits). Curiously speaking, this is the anime that pushed the Chibi phenomenon to mainstream, so you ca expect a lot of that. But the fight scenes mean business; each warrior has a special ability, unique to their personality, making the fight scenes and plot expansions that much more interesting. Conspiracy, war, espionage, you've got it all! The characters are memorable here too, and you'll find yourself falling in love with the storyline overall, no matter who your favourite character is.

All in all, worth watching!

Okay, fine, I guess there aren't a lot of fellow fans around here. It's Neon Genesis Evangelion - the anime that redefined anime, and understandably so. Fascinating plotting, perfect pacing, great characters, provocative themes and unforgettable imagery - it has everything I could ever want from an anime series, and is quite likely the reason I'm still an anime fan today. Be warned, though, that by the end it gets extremely dark, introspective and mind-screwy, so I hope you like that sort of thing. (If you like Chrono Cross and Xenogears, then you probably will.)

Rurouni Kenshin is also gooood stuff, although I vastly prefer the manga to the anime (the TV anime, at least - the OVAs are fantastic) and there's word of a new anime coming down the line. But really, aside from broadly recommending "the classics" (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ranma 1/2, Evangelion, Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc.) it's kind of hard to make specific suggestions without knowing what exactly you look for in anime/film/fiction.

Hahahahaha i watched this the other night, what the fuck was up with that ending?

Can I recommend you play an anime game rather than watch an anime?

Mr Bekkler I came out of the wood work just for you pal.

I am gonna say that Last Exile is indeed one of my personal favorites and the praise it is getting it justified. More so though I'd recommend "Spice and Wolf". It is VERY nonstandard. First of no fighting at all really, but it isn't a slice of life or cute little girls and boys show. It is about trade and economics of pre-Renaissance Europe, a very unique topic to be sure, but that isn't the only thing selling it. The Characters, oh man the characters they all have AMAZING depth and detail to them. The rapport between Lawrence and Holo, is definitely not a cliche anime romance it is something is much more realistic and an honest connection.

Even if you don't end up watching the anime, you could also pick up the books which the anime is based on. It is a extremely faithful adaption so both are legitimate options.

Ho ho ho! Romance/Comedy lover!  :D

In that case, you just might like School Rumble.  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nfU70e_CYM)The story's Love Triangle Quadrilateral Connect-the-dots, about a girl who falls in love with a guy, who falls in love with another girl, who falls in love with another guy, who simply LOVES pie! Aaaaaaaand they all have issues.

I'm more into character development and character-based humor than romance per se, which Fruits Basket has in cute spades (GOD I love the Snake), but I do find Wacky Japanese Student Shenanigans to be inherently hilarious, so I will take a look!

I haven't mentioned this so far because I doubt it's Mr Bekkler's style, but my favorite anime is actually Revolutionary Girl Utena. It has a number of qualities many find offputting: 1) it's cheaply animated; 2) it's a simultaneous deconstruction and riff on shoujo tropes (repeat costume-change animations ahoy!); 3) it's among the most surreal and strange of all anime. Eat your heart out, FLCL.

However, if you can hang on til the third arc, it's just jawdropping. It's high metaphysical theater in the Greek style, with character development as profound as any I've ever seen-- character development tied to deep philosophical contexts and archetypes, in fact. It's a painful, fucked-up ode to idealism with a bunch of playful occult references thrown in for good measure. It's really, really, really good, for those who have enough sympathy, and a keen eye. I'm done now. (Also, I'm tempted to make an Utena avatar...)

Don't worry about me, if you like it, suggest it! You make Utena sound like a compelling ride.
Title: Re: Anime Suggestions Thread
Post by: alfadorredux on May 09, 2011, 07:39:42 pm
"A compelling ride" is a good way to put it. Utena is one of my favourites as well--incredibly, even the recap episodes that are three-quarters made up of clips from earlier episodes manage to contribute to the story. However, I wouldn't say that it's cheaply animated--more that the artwork is often rather stylized.[1]

Syna, have you ever seen Princess Tutu? It's somewhat similar to Utena (right down to the surrealism).

Another favourite of mine that fails to meet Mr Bekkler's criteria but might be of interest to some people here is Noein ~ Mou Hitori no Kimi e, a science-fiction series that deals heavily in parallel universes, time travel, and quantum physics. One of the main characters is in a situation weirdly similar to Fargo's, actually (except that we also get to see him as he was before the event that broke his world apart). It also has good characterization and some interesting fight choreography. The official translation apparently dropped the ball in a big way on the quantum physics terminology in the show, so anyone interested in watching it should search out the Shinsen-Subs version if possible.

[1] If you want to see what "cheaply animated" really looks like in anime, try Violinist of Hameln, whose makers forced a budget intended for 13 episodes to stretch to cover 25. It often looks more like a set of storyboards strung together than any kind of animation. This is probably the main reason it has never gotten an official translation. (It's a shame, actually--if you like fantasy drama, it's a pretty entertaining show.)

What I'm currently watching: Fairy Tail and Deadman Wonderland.

Fairy Tail is about wizards/mages. It's almost like it takes place in an MMO world. All of the wizards form guilds where they form teams (parties) within the guild in order to go out and do jobs (quests) for rewards. They are currently around the 80 episode mark and still going. The story focuses around 4 main characters with their own special abilities.

Deadman Wonderland is about this boy who gets convicted of a crime he didn't commit, and is then sent to life in prison at a place called Deadman Wonderland, which is an amusement park where the convicts are forced to entertain to make money to support the facility. There is a secret about the place, conspiracy theories abound, and the main character is stuck in the middle of it all due to his newly found powers.

Everyone needs to stop what they're doing and watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Nutbladder subs if you can get them. It's a deconstruction of Magical Girl anime, and it made me cry. Especially for people here who dig the Chrono series, I think you'll get a lot out of the themes and settings. If it doesn't look like your thing, stick with it, you'll be hooked by episode 3. Try not to be spoiled!

Has any watched Persona 4: The Animation? I will probably be getting Arena soon, but I also want to be caught up on the story.

I watched the first episode and ... I admit feeling frustrated. The main character barely talks! Sure, in video games this is fine. But I'm not playing the video game, I'm watching a show. I want my characters to be already developed and not be avatars of myself.

So I'm asking those who have watch it, is this something that improves? Am I overreacting, or is this anime one I can only enjoy if I previously played the game?

I made it to the end of Persona 4: The Animation (well, the end as originally televised—the "real" ending is being released as a one-shot OAV sometime this summer, as I understand it), and no, the main character never really does become more vocal. And the show itself is poor, as anime adaptations of games usually are.

The standout anime series that have ended in the past year or so have been:
-Mawaru no Penguin Drum (surrealist/fantasy drama by the creator of Shoujo Kakumei Utena)
-Mirai Nikki (action/dark fantasy/supernatural horror, a bit gory)
-Chihayafuru (analog game drama in the vein of Hikaru no Go)
-Fate/Zero (darkish urban fantasy, much better than Fate/Stay Night, but don't expect any fan service)
-Mouretsu Pirates (AKA Bodacious Space Pirates, lightweight space opera)
-Tsuritama (science fiction comedy)
-the third season of Natsume Yuujinchou

Pick one of those if you're terminally bored, and don't waste your time on Persona.

Thread revival!

I'd like to revive this with a caveat -- so my daughter is FIVE (5) now!!! I've introduced her to anime and she's fallen in love with Miyazaki films (just like her dad). Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro are her favorites.

I've been trying to find some kid-friendly anime series in the same vein; aren't too kiddy, aren't too grown up, etc. We watched Mamoru Hosoda's Wolf Children a few weeks ago and she enjoyed it, but not as much as a Miyazaki film (probably because it's a bit more grown up, although it did spark a new obsession with wolves).

She's watched Glitter Force and some of Sailor Moon, but we've nixed Sailor Moon for the time being because it's a little too grown up for her. She's also seen a little bit of Inuyasha and has fallen in love with Shippo, but it, too is a little much for a five year old, so I've told her she can watch it when she's a little older.

That all being said, does anyone with much more in-depth knowledge of anime have any suggestions for a five year old who loves animals and adventure/fantasy? I'm more of a mainstream anime watcher, so I'm sort of at a loss here.

Holy crikey, it's been five years already? Time really does fly!

How do you feel about Princess Mononoke? Strong central female character, and lotsa animals. But then again, there's freaky monsters and gunplay and I think some intimation that the antagonist's factory is staffed by former prostitutes... Dang, I never appreciated how tough these media decisions must be for parents!

The other things that spring to my mind are Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Howl's Moving Castle, but of course they're already Miyazaki.

Going outside anime for the moment, there's always Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Crystal). But to this day I find the Skeksis and the eyeball-holding witch pretty disturbing, so yeah...

She's seen all of the Studio Ghibli / Miyazaki films except Porco Roso, Tales From Earthsea, and Princess Mononoke. The first two because we don't yet own them, and the latter because I do think it's just a but too grown up. Maybe in a year or two...?

EDIT: Oh, and she hasn't seen Grave of the Fireflies. For obvious reasons.

On a related note, I'm super pumped Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement for at least one more film.

:)

Things that might be okay for her to watch right now, and have been/will be licensed in English (so dubs are likely to be available):

These were all created for younger audiences, and so aren't likely to contain anything too inappropriate.

I can provide a much longer list of things that might be good in a year or two, if you like (also one of things that are probably age-appropriate but would require you to read subtitles to her--there are a lot of old mahou shoujo series that are lighter than Sailor Moon).

Yeah, I watch too much anime.

It is funny this had been my favorite when I was about 10-11 years old. Though I never saw the ending until 12 years later, because the TV only gave 20 minutes per day before adverticement time.
When I watched it again,  I felt different, maybe because I was not a kid anymore.
LOL

Edit*
I seems another 12 years have passed.

Motherfuggin' thread revival!

I've been on an insane anime kick. I can't get enough. I am watching like, at least, 5 episodes per day while I work and multitask.

Just wrapped up Children of the Whales on Netflix. Super catchy soundtrack and a great story; it's a very fleshed out, fun fantasy world. But the story never completely captured me due to having far too many characters and suffers from "too many endings" syndrome.

I'm now watching A.I.C.O., also a Netflix exclusive, and loving the 1990's-era scifi inspiration. But hot damn is the dub a mess. Despite being a total weeb, I normally watch my anime in English. Since I'm multi-tasking, it allows me to hear what's going on when I'm only half paying attention. My Japanese lessons are paying off, but I'm not that good... Yet.

I still feel a gaping hole in my heart after having finished almost 200 episodes and 5 movies of Inuyasha.

Alright, here's my recommendations then. This year has been an amazing year for anime, with so many amazing things coming out, each one of them becoming "one of my favorites" all of a sudden. So here's what I really enjoyed this year:

1) Violet Evergarden -- I cried like a baby. Beautiful, not just in story but in animation too (possibly the best animated anime ever anime'd). This will have a really special place in my heart.

2) Megalobox -- This one is refreshingly good, since I really miss grittiness in sports anime, and along with its good art this one hooked me right from the first episode.

3) Hina Festival -- It's hilarious! For a comedy story, it seems to have a lot of heart. I didn't just laugh, but I also cried.

4) Captain Tsubasa -- I actually missed this ever since I saw it a decade ago with its old art-style. I'm happy it got rebooted, doing so very well, even if a bit rushed.

5) My Hero Academia 3 -- Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-

Now that the recent anime is something I got off my chest, here's a blast from the past which I absolutely adored:

1) Shirabako -- This is one of those anime that will also have a special place in my heart. And it's not just intellectual drivel about how anime is made, but this show has really sold itself on connecting its characters with you on an emotional level as they struggle to complete the roles and duties they have towards a production as it hits hurdles after hurdles. Dreams aren't easy to achieve, but sometimes you find yourself staking your life on them.

2) Barakamon -- A calligrapher trying to find his muse, but a little girl won't leave him alone. Found this gem after watching the Handa-Kun anime, which is a comedy prequel to Barakamon. Honestly, I never used to like Slice-of-Life stories that much, but Barakamon really made me fall in love with the genre.

What anime I'm looking forward to this year:

1) JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Golden Wind -- God knows how long I've been waiting for this.

2) Steins;Gate 0 -- Just waiting for the dubs and it to finish airing, because I know I'm going to binge this one.

I'm trying really hard to get back into anime this year after hardly watching any for many years. I'm kind of an old fart like that; I'm pretty decently versed with the classic motion pictures from the '70s - '90s, and with a handful of TV series from the '90s and early '00s, but my knowledge falls off pretty hard thereafter, though I've seen some cool ones like Mushishi.

Some folks I like do an anime roundup every season, and I'm trying to get through this list:

Castlevania (on Netflix): Watched the whole season; kind of dull.

Devilman Crybaby: Watched the first episode; didn't like it. Not gonna watch any more.

Haven't Seen Yet; Can't Vouch:

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
Gegege no Kitaro
Megalo Box
Golden Kamuy
Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai
Lupin the Third Part 5
Hisone to Maso-chan
A Place Further Than The Universe
Yuru Camp

Those last two, respectively, are an anime about getting to Antarctica and an anime about winter camping, which are both pretty appealing topics. Despite being at the bottom of my list I might get to them next.

On the whole, I continue to have a strong affinity for motion picture anime over TV series anime, but most of the volume is happening in the latter area.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho is A Place Further Than the Universe, under the Japanese title. I watched it as it was coming out. It was a fun series.

Yuru Camp/ Laid Back Camp was also quite enjoyable. It's definitely a silly series.

Yuru Camp looks so cute. There should be more anime about camping!

I've been meaning to watch Children of the Whales ever since I saw the manga at a store. Looked pretty good. Of course, I still need to watch Cowboy Bebop...

Lord J, I was going to recommend to you Mushishi! (or maybe I already did?) Seems right up your alley. I'm actually a pretty big fan of the art style of most 80s anime. Can you recommend any good ones?
Title: Re: Anime Suggestions Thread

I'd say, I still don't know why I decided to just go and check on one of all the animes mentioned in the last posts... and then why Hina Festival in specific, and all I can say this...

Ah, such an emotional rollercoaster!

Don't get me wrong, overall I mostly enjoyed it (even went to check out the manga), but it was like... why keep subjecting myself to that... I don't know. If the rest of it gets adapted as well... well, I suppose sometimes I'm just too curious for my own good. Then again, having already watched some of that from the manga...

Anyway, I'm not really that versed on the newer animes to recommend one; but if looking for something on the older side... well, recently I've been watching Macross/Robotech, since it begun to be aired on Saturday mornings over here and... man, it had been years since I last saw that! Although I never really stopped from encountering it due to Super Robot Wars, but the anime itself, it had been so long since I last saw it. It was among the first I saw.

I suppose if you have an interest in sci-fi, mechas, and/or aircrafts, it could be a good recommendation. I'd recommend it, in any case. Perhaps watching it in its Japanese original, or I think there is an English redub that's more faithful to the original Macross than Harmony Gold's Robotech. Either way, I'd not recommend Harmony Gold's dub (and related) over them, but that may be just me.

Yeah, I've been on a mecha kick recently. Just watched A.I.C.O. Incarnate (which wasn't really mecha, but it had that 1990's scifi anime feel) and have been rewatching Knights of Sidonia and Aldorah Zero. I have a few other series on my list I want to get to next, and both Robotech and the original Gundam are on there.

I've been meaning to check out Hina Festival at some point.
Watch it! It's beautiful. It's the kind of comedy that's pretty hard to come buy. Every gag has a long-term impact on the story, as opposed to it being a one-off "Lol random" moment that we're used to. I find myself coming back to it over and over again.

I haven't really watched anime in a very long time and I'd like to start again. I love Dragon Ball Z so I will probably start with that so based on the fact that is the anime I really like, any recommendations of what I can watch after Dragon Ball? Thanks!!

If you're looking Shonen action series similar to Dragon Ball (and if you've already watched Dragon Ball Super anime), I highly recommend My Hero Academia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPVkcwyLQQ8), which is a story about a kid without superpowers wanting to follow in the footsteps of Superman (and that said Superman-figure has attacks named after American cities / states). It is one of the best things to come out so far.

Another recommendation would go to Hunter x Hunter, which takes tried-and-true Shonen tropes and turns them on their heads.

If you want something shorter than Hunter x Hunter and Dragon Ball, then I'll always recommend One's stories (because despite his bad art skills, he always shits out masterpieces), such as One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100.

whispersGoku will always be Crono.

No, Crono is Tapion's younger brother, because Trunks reminds Tapion of his younger brother, and Trunks is a sword-wielding time-traveler. Tapion also sealed Lavos along with himself. Mr Satan was the Chancellor.

Anyway, I'm not really that versed on the newer animes to recommend one; but if looking for something on the older side... well, recently I've been watching Macross/Robotech, since it begun to be aired on Saturday mornings over here and... man, it had been years since I last saw that!

Yeah, I've been on a mecha kick recently.

That's funny, because I was meaning to get back into Mecha anime recently. I even have Macross in Plan To Watch list, but just haven't gotten around to do it. But I did get into Gundam once again, starting with today:

I watched Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky, which I believe was pretty spectacular. It was a simple concept, taking place smack-dab in the middle of the One Year War (Universal Century timeline), but the direction was absolutely beautiful. I was also surprised by how its art-style was, akin to Megalobox, a combination of the old-school art and character-design with modernized animation, colors and all that jazz (pun intended). Despite it being a new addition, it fits right at home with the old UC shows.

There's another mecha show that I have my eye on, and it's one that seems to be very under-appreciated and lesser-known by those who aren't Japanese, and that's Patlabor, which is known to have been a nurturing-ground for Mamoru Oshi, who eventually went on to head the Ghost in The Shell project. That said, Patlabor is by no means inferior to GiTS or Gundam, because the franchise is crafted masterfully and does things with the SciFi / Mecha genre (and does it so well) that few others, if ever, do.

What made me want to check out this franchise are these two videos:
1) By Glass Reflection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TydVnMSC3Y0
2) By Oh No, Anime!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J52ecXnl_EE

I'm getting back into anime at last, despite having so little time, and watched not one but two series over the past several days, both of which I recommend. (Actually, I watched three series, but I won't recommend one of them.)

Violet Evergarden -- Designed to be a tear-jerker, and it delivered for me. I love anime like this and want to see more like it. The theme is really interesting: The idea of an emotionless person being better able to see the emotions and sentiments in others, because emotion itself is so misleading. Really good show with excellent character development.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. -- This is basically the opposite: a show with no character development and no seriousness. That's not usually my cup of tea, but I really enjoy the sense of humor on this one. Lots of laugh-out-loud moments and clever visual gags. You'll know in two or three episodes whether it's a fit for you.

This is the review I needed. Work has been insanely stressful the past few weeks, and will be for several weeks more as we hit some critical project timelines (I'm a project manager in my day job). I sometimes have to cram some more work in late at night and recently have taken to watching really funny/zany anime to keep the spirits lifted.

Since I'm multi-tasking (and not fully watching, since I'm also working), I've been needing Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime series that have English dubs. I finished Aggretsuko last night (which was surprisingly good, if only because it feels like a pretty accurate caricature of office drone life) and I was trying to decide what comes next. Last night when I considered what to watch next I was at a loss. This made it far easier for me, so thanks!

I hope you enjoy it! It took me a couple episodes to really commit, but the cleverness and absurdity eventually won me over. =]

Hah! Glad somebody else shares my love for this show.

I'd like to have a word with you.  :x

And that word is Iyashikei. Look it up!

Though, be warned, this sort of anime is best enjoyed not when multitasking but when you're winding down after a hard day of work, had your bath, open a bottle of beer or something, and just chill. These are the kinds of shows that really soothe your soul.

Man, I'd definitely put Barakamon on the list, which is one such example of an Iyashikei. Naru is my muse, just as Joseph Joestar is my God!

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

Man, that show is gold!

Plus the puns.

So I am totally late to the party in finally watching My Hero Academia...

I've been hearing about this show for a while now. Obviously it's hugely popular right now. But last night I needed something new to watch. I've been watching Durrarara!! but I've been struggling to really get into it.

So I fired up My Hero Academia on a whim. I mean, it's simulcast on Hulu now, so why not? Aaaaaaand holy crap is this show good. It's that perfect blend of rooting for the little guy and defining heroism in the face of adversity. A little on the sugary side, but I am totally digging it.

I cranked out six episodes last night while I pulled some late night work, and I can't wait to dive back in tonight.

So I'm finally caught up on My Hero Academia...

My god, I'm not a middle school kid, but I freaking love it like one. The show is a great spin on the super hero genre, and the motivational messaging just makes me feel. For real. I don't know the last time a television show made me feel this much. And the great thing is, what I feel is almost always motivational and positivity.

I was talking to Thought and Faustwolf about the show and how much it invigorates me. So much so, in fact, I am restarting it immediately. Normally I need a few years before I can take another pass at anything (whether book, television series, or video game). But hot damn, this show is stellar.

I hear Naruto is somewhat similar in tone. I'm generally the guy who doesn't really get into the mainstream stuff (not that there's anything wrong with it), so I've literally never seen more than 5 minutes of Naruto, but it may be time to give that a try, too.

Two new things I was excited about:

Is the Order a Rabbit? OVA 2 and season 3 (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-09-16/is-the-order-a-rabbit-anime-gets-new-ova-in-2019-3rd-season-in-2020/.136864)

3rd Aerial Girls Squadron gets an anime (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-09-12/shirobako-creators-unveil-air-combat-tv-anime-koya-no-kotobuki-hikotai/.136710) (sorta. Not quite)

The second one, 3rd Aerial Girls Squadron, actually looks really good. I don't mind girl power anime, either.

You all have heard me rant and rave about how motivational I find My Hero Academia, and I've since watched it twice through (up until the most current episode). My birthday is coming up, and for my birthday I asked my wife if we could go see the movie of My Hero Academia (called Two Heroes) at the local theater during it's limited theatrical run. It's only running for a week or so, so I am pumped.

Granted, my wife doesn't care for anime and knows nothing about it... but she'll endure. PLUUUUUS ULTRA!

In other news, I've been searching for an anime that has that same sense of purpose. Of perseverance and hard work and achieving one's dreams. I feel like I could've used Shonen Jump when I was a kid, hahaha... Alas, I discovered it in my 30s (or rather, finally paid attention to it). So, based on a reddit recommendation...

...I've started watching Naruto. Holy crap, I had no idea it would be HUNDREDS of episodes between the Naruto series and Boruto. I have started watching it and I'm about 30 episodes in. I like it, but don't love it. I hear it picks up, though.

The actual title of the second one is Kōya no Kotobuki Hikōtai (Kotobuki - The Wasteland Squadron). 3rd Aerial Girls Squadron was a joke because it's by some people who were behind Shirobako, an anime about making anime that had a fictional anime by that title, but tushantin might be the only one who gets it.

I watch my share of girl power anime. My share being any I come across.

Enjoy the movie and your birthday!

I watched some Naruto, but never really got into it.

Regarding Naruto:

That's pretty much where I'm at right now. It's not bad, per se... but it's not been great and it hasn't pulled me in. I assume because it's designed for the traditional Shonen Jump demographic, which I am definitely a part of (although I did love Inuyasha, and am currently the conductor of the hypetrain for My Hero Academia).

I think Gunslinger Girl is up next. It's been on my list for far too long.

Naruto, huh.

I enjoyed it, what I watched. Never saw it in full, but truth be told I only stopped watching it because it stopped airing on TV.

Speaking of what's airing on TV, I was surprised to see they started airing Ranma 1/2 again. Like, wow, how many years since that? Admitedly, I've forgotten many details about it, so watching it now seems like a semi-fresh experience again, hahahaha. Though I'm sure there were still a numbe of episodes I missed out the first time around.

Welcome back tushantin!

I remember liking Steins;Gate (haven't seen 0), though it's been a long time. I can't remember the last time I watched a new anime, to be honest. I just got the first season of Mushi-Shi on DVD, so I'm going to take my time watching that again; it's one of my favorites.
