Earlier this year, Vehek made an amazing discovery by finding excerpts of a CT interview from a player's guide in Japan, previously unknown to the Compendium and English-speaking community. Angerona then did the impossible by acquiring and scanning the entire thing. Guess what else? It just so happens that this guide was the one featuring some of Toriyama's earliest character sketches (which will be in the official art section by the next update), previously brought to light by Chains of Fate. Just now, we've gotten to reviewing it as I'm slowly updating the site, and I noticed a pretty important sketch...

Yeah. That's Gaspar, in full Zeal Guru of Time regalia. Compare with his sprites, which also feature his staff:

As soon as I saw this, I politely asked GlitterBerri (well, more like I screamed with excitement at her) to translate the caption underneath that image. And what did we get? "The mysterious cut character,'Sage'. It's a waste not to use it despite its good flavor." Bang! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6uKc6gAoK0) 15 years to reach us, but there it is! It touched 5 Chrono fans, and now we're shouting it from the mountaintop. Gaspar was probably cut early in development, as no extra sprites of him exist in the Prerelease. Still, this is FANTASTIC information! The Guru of Time has attained a very special new significance; he was truly going to be the 8th member of the team! Huge thanks to Chains of Fate, Vehek, Angerona, GlitterBerri, and a ton of other people. We're going to get this Ultra Update finished and keep the Chrono heartbeat pumping with nothing but hot blood!

That's incredible! Very cool find.
Perhaps the plans to make him a playable character caused them to only make a limited number of compressed sprites, assuming they'd have a wider range of movement for him in the uncompressed playable character sprite section?
I don't entirely know what I'm talking about. But it made sense when I thought of it.
-
Wha...?
Amazing! Now I wonder, how it would have been his fighting style had he been kept as a party member... :?:
Only thing in mind is magic oriented (though unsure of the element) with, highly likely, staves as his weapons.
What an amazing discovery, nonetheless. :D
-
I knew there was an 8th! I knew it!
-
This is awesome.
Edit: Makes me wonder about that guard-like overworld sprite in the Prerelease version. Perhaps it's an unfinished version of a Gaspar sprite?
-
This is too awesome for words. Thanks to everyone who had a part in bringing this to light! It's the gift that keeps on giving, over a decade later.

Could that old "Sage" be him?
-
Wow...
When I posted about that magazine, I wasn't sure what else would be in there besides that interview. I could guess that maybe it was the source of the early character sketches and maybe where those character ages/measurements came from (still need to confirm this). But I wouldn't have guessed that the old speculation based on glitchy behavior and a badly translated line might actually be true.
Barring any other unknown magazine issues with early CT content, future interviews, or leaks of older prototype versions, I'm going to say what we find from this magazine is probably the last of the discoveries about the development.
-
xDDD Who says Gaspar isn't the 8th hero of time even now? He's been assisting Crono and co since day one! Great find, nevertheless. I just wonder what kind of powers he'd have compared to the rest. Since he's a true Zealian, training and all, he's bound to be as powerful as Magus if not more.
@utunnels: Yeah, that's him alright.
-
Heh, so I guess the Ted Woolsey translation of "If you really want to thank me, make me a member of your team!" isn't all that strange now in retrospect. :P
-
I wonder what skills he'd have, if he had been playable in the game.
-
Hehe, guess some time magic like Time Freeze.
-
FINALLY people will stop thinking I'm crazy for saying that
-
Oh snap! This is something I would have never expected. I wonder how long it will be for the spriters return and make a theoretical sprite sheet based on this information.
-
Damn! And everyone thought the 8th playable character was Schala! It would have been so awesome to have Gaspar in your party for sure! To bad his sprites are so limited. Ah well thats what the fans are for :D

Im working on one now XD.

It deffinantly could be: (http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/729/mayben.png)
I want to know what double and triple techs he would have had XD maybe they would have given him and Magus something zealian and kickass!
-
I made a young Gaspar walking sprite, it's on my game's thread. I know TheMage is working on something cool too, but this is what I had :P :

A tear of closure trickles down chee_zee's face.

God, I'm in love with this new blush layout. Look at that page; it's now incredibly better.

Gaspar always had the best robes of all the Gurus. He would have made a fascinating addition to the game. I think, however, that the decision to cut him was apt. Chrono Trigger was too "bright" to include a character like that in the playable cast. He'd have been much more at home as the fourth member in Radical Dreamers, or the millionth member of the Chrono Cross playable cast.
Still, an astounding discovery! I bet Gaspar would be prominent in Kato's mind if the Dream Team or elements thereof ever writes another Chrono game.
-
Hmm... I forget, just how much was made for eight character Gaspar? He was cut so early I wonder just how different the whole story would have been with him in the party. How different of a character would he be? I guess he'd be much more talkative, he'd be so different. What would have happened at Zeal? Ugh finding out it wasn't human Glenn only makes me want to know EVERY scenario possibility he came up with!!!
-
Wow, that's pretty damn neat. I wonder when he was to initially join Crono & Co. Maybe to go get the Epoch? After your first trip to Zeal? Or maybe he'd be like a temporary character throughout the journey...Oh the possibilities....
-
That's bloody amazing. Great find!
-
Well, Gaspar is in your party. :P
In the character swap menu at least, right below your 3rd character.

The 8th isn't Schala...?
Excuse me for a moment...
*Cries in a corner.*
-
Wow. So cool. Opens so many possibilities for what kind of twists and turns the story could have taken. Great discovery to start the year with. 15 years on, and there's still new things to be found. Thanks to everyone involved in their hard work, digging this up. Really neat stuff.
-
Honestly, I'm surprised it was him, not Schala, who was the eighth. Perhaps the Zeal Princess's role was decided long before though. Oh well. I can only imagine how it would've been to have him has a party member!!
-
Perhaps his rod/cane was some kind of sword so his fighting style would be like Radius.
Just got an random idea.
-
A highly probable one as well... that or maybe he was more of a spell caster like Riddel or Guile, with a rod as the weapon.
-
I wonder; what if Gaspar is Radius in CC? Both are old, have interesting garbs ( okay a trench coat can be cool) that resemble the Zealian period ( Doesn't Radius have a garb that loosely resembles one of the three guru's during the Zealian period? ) and seem to have adequate knowledge on the past.

I'm pretty sure we can confirm that he is not. Let's not start this theory.
-
Totally awesome.
And now I am sure you all remember this during your CT playthroughs...

I can definitely see the next Chrono game featuring the Gurus of Time plotting a way to save Schala as Magus as the lead MC.
-
I somehow see the three gurus try to rebuild Zeal under Magus's leadership in the future. Magus for main character FTW!!! (not really I want dialogue from him and a silent protagonist)

Well, being the main doesn't mean he has to be silent...
-
But I said I want one.
-
Why would you want a silent protagonist? Because it's traditional? That really limits the potential character development in the story. It's one of the few old-school RPG conventions I think is best left in the past.
-
Because I feel the game really is in my perspective.
-
I could go either way, honestly. As long as the game's good.
-
Great find!
To offer an alternate perspective: "Sage" may not so much be Gaspar as they re-used his sprite. As the translation states: "It's a waste not to use it..."
But that aside, it does explain why there isn't a Zeal character to recruit (the party does recruit at least one person from every other time period, though I suppose Magus might count as Zeal's contribution). I'd have loved to see his dungeon, though.
-
That's a wonderful find! :3 I secretly wish this was a PC game now, because with some PC games you can tinker with the files and find missing mobs/quests. >_> I would love to see his play style and dialogue.

I don't believe so. I just feel he is knowledgeable in the word due to his age and experiences in the Acacia Dragoons. Personally, I believe that there is a connection between the two, but only in appearance and personality. They may have used him to fulfill the void they missed with a sage in the first game.
-
I understand why he was not implemented :
1 character from 2300 A.D.
0 character from 1999 A.D.
3 characters from 1000 A.D.
1 character from 600 A.D.
1 character from 12 000 B.C.
1 character from 65 000 000 B.C.
Present gets a bit too much love, but in a way Crono, Lucca and Marle are the main heroes. Now why would Dark Age get 2 heroes (Magus and Gaspar) ? More importantly, we already have a kickass wizard... What role would be left for Gaspar ?
Personally I would have added a hero from the apocalypse to maximize variety. 8)
-
The 1000AD characters are a basic RPG ensemble (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WithAFriendAndAStranger) :P
Maybe Gaspar could have been the character from the End of Time.
Personally I would have added a hero from the apocalypse to maximize variety.
I think this is a really neat idea. I wonder what kind of character it could have been, another human?

XD That kinda got me thinkin.
-
I'd like to see Johnny joining after you beat him in the motorcycle race.
Edit*
Ah, you mean apocalypse, so that is 1999 AD?
-
You save the Director from the video you see in 2300, then you have to make a fake version of the video to prevent the paradox of your never seeing the vid you stopped.

Of course you could pull him out of that event - they might end up on video instead...
And seeing yourself saving someone in a video saving some guy during the end of life as humanity knows it would kinda spark a desire to both save the world and figure out what the heck you where doing on a video labeled 1999 during the end of the world.
-
I like it! It's timey wimey!

Oh my goodness. Even if it is pretty much Crono's sprite sheet, who cares? It's awesome!!!
I really did like Gaspar a lot. n_n That is so snazzy!
-
Ahaha, I can almost see it happening in-game.
-
HOLLY SHEEPS!!
We love you, TheMage! :D
-
Thanks guys!
I've been working on it for a very long time, (cough since April cough) and I got frustrated at how far behind I was so I cheated and used Crono but I think he still looks good, and now i'm done :D :D Anyone may use him for whatever they wish!
-
Your sprites remind me of the beta overworld sprite for that brown clothed character. This sort of fits quite well.
-
Very impressive work! It inspired my first post in god knows how long.

That reminds me of a character from the Dragon Quest Abel Yuusha anime (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDXJ56f3OEk#t=5m00s).
-
um haha he is a good character for the storyline, but I don't see him as the action-hero type.
-
I saw this post before, but I never saw Mage's sprite sheet for playable Gaspar. That's friggin' rad!
-
That is certainly an incredible find! Now to wonder about a remake with Gaspar as a PC...
-
It makes sense that he would be the 8th if there should be an 8th. You get 1 character from every other period in time aside from the 3 from the present. I don't think he would have gotten any moves, he probably would have been a support character to call upon, like a triple tech move or something. I think his element would have been shadow, since he hangs out in purple wavy time goop land.
