Title: An old CT interview? / V-Jump player's guide
Post by: Vehek on April 03, 2010, 04:28:18 pm
A few days ago, I was looking at some Japanese pages through Google Translate when I came across this post:
Quote

From what I can tell, it doesn't seem to be anything special (it apparently starts with asking if the names "Sarah" and "Jaki" come from Virtua Fighter!), at least not in the quoted section.

Also, moving to a tangent, I don't believe we have any information about the guide it's said to be from.

I got this picture from an auction site:
(Image long since lost)

Edit:
When I was looking at the pictures (not in the image I posted), I thought something seemed familiar about the arrangement used, and I was right.

Were any of the CT team involved in Tobal No. 1 besides Toriyama? If they really did pluck names from Virtua Fighter, I wonder if their appreciation for that game led to Squaresoft's own ventures into the fighting game arena (namely Tobal and Ehrgeiz, I guess).

From what I can tell from machine translation, the "Virtua Fighter" thing is just speculation by the interviewer.

I'm more sure now that what I've quoted is only part of the interview. I'm currently trying to figure out what other things are said to be from the guide.

For a minor example, this very short snippet which is supposedly about "Cyrus Punch" (The poster apparently wanted to make a point with this):

Quote

Or for example, this probably paraphrased description, apparently about that famous snow artwork:
Quote

Not that it would have had much influence as far as pulling names goes, Yasunori Mitsuda was music producer and one of the many composers for the Tobal No.1 soundtrack. Noriko Matsueda also did a track for the score.

They're all there. These are brilliant, and an incredible contribution to the history of the series. I'll mark you down as the next Guru of Time.

Thank you so much!!!  :o    :D
I’m currently scanning the rest of the magazine; hopefully it should be ready by the end of the next week. By the way, is the image resolution I’m currently using working fine? Or would you recommend a higher (or lower) one?

I just sent you the last files; I think everything is included but if there’s something missing or if something needs to be re-scanned just let me know  :)  (the numeration starts at page 21; the previous pages are the cards and posters).

Jeez, we never thought we'd get those. I imagine it'll be a lot of work, but if you want to do it, it'd be absolutely amazing.

Going to get it added to Material Requiring Translation now, but I'm picking through to find areas of interest.

Have to run to work; I'll be back.

  • What's the scratch-card thing?
  • Frontcover2.jpg seems to have a framed Toriyama drawing as merchandise; we'll definitely add that to be translated.

Have to run to work; I'll be back.

Regarding the card:

I believe that you had to answer 6 questions related to the game and scratch the letter of the answer you choose (a, b or c, each answer you could choose caused you a certain amount of  damage (0, 5 or 10 points). Then, to fight Magus, as Chrono, you had to choose 2 out of the 5 available main characters to make your team (each one of whom had a different amount of power) If you defeated Magus with at least 100 points (to get your total I believe you had to subtract the damage you received from the total power of the 2 characters you had chosen), you filled the card with your personal info and sent it and you could win one of the prices of the previous page (20 lithographs, 50 phone cards or 200 prism card packages).

I believe at the back of the card there’s also a small poll where you have to choose the 3 sections of the guide you liked the most.

Regarding the lithographs I added a link to a picture but now I’m not sure if they are the same thing since the price of the item in the picture is way too low for such an unusual object (which means there’s even more CT merchandise out there, which are good news anyway =)) . There’s no much info at the guide but there must be something interesting  hidden in there ^-^.

Thanks. Got it all added to Material Requiring Translation.

I am hoping like a crazy bastard that Kato's comic features  :kz on the right. (I shall destroy all those who stand in my way!!). We need to translate more to reveal his identity, I guess. It's probably Magus, but...

It's always great to see these interviews, but kinda depressing in a sense, because it reminds us that today chrono is a relic of the past that Square (in particular) doesn't care much about.
